Firstly, I must give credit to @willyjay for showing me how to modify the notification bar icons from black and white to color for Google applications.
NOTE: THESE MODS WORK ON ODEXED ROMS, DEODEXED ROMS NEED MODIFICATIONS TO THE /SYSTEM/APP FOLDER.
IF NOTIFICATIONS DON'T WORK AFTER INITIAL FLASH, MAKE SURE YOU ONLY HAVE 1 COPY OF THE APK IN YOUR /DATA/APP FOLDER
** Update December 7, 2014 **
ONLY FOR KK ROMS. EVERYTHING SHOWS UP WHITE IN LP.
You can download individual app color notifications using the hyperlinks at the bottom of this post or the all inclusive zip listed in the instructions.
Nexus Color matches the attached screenshots, Google Color matches the Moonshine Icons
FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK, I am not responsible for anything that may happen to your phone. If you have issues after flashing, you can try to Uninstall Updates in Settings / Apps, or flash Gapps.
Feel free to post icon suggestions, but they should have a transparent background and be 256 x 256 max.
Instructions
1. Flash Color Notification Icons in recovery (single zip contains all apps listed below)
Nexus Colors (see attachements, Updated August 15th)
Moonshine (sample - Updated September 4th)
2. Wipe cache / dalvik cache (optional)
3. Reboot
4. Profit
Google + Nexus Color Google Color
Calendar Nexus Color Google Color
EMail Nexus Color Google Color
GMail Nexus Color Google Color
Hangouts (only 1 zip)
I'll add more apps and icons.
Screenshots below.
If you like my work, say thanks. I do this for fun, don't donate to me. If you are feeling generous, you can donate to the Alpine Learning Group.
You can do it!
Create a nandroid backup before attempting this.
Here's how you can create your own notification icons
Download 7zip
Download Gimp
Download Notepad++ (we’ll need this for more advanced stuff later)
Create your new icon. You can use Gimp to make sure it is
transparent
1 layer
192 x 192 max
Pull the particular app from your phone (\data\app folder for odex ROM, \system\app for deodex, and copy the apk to your computer)
Backup the original apk, I have an N5 folder and a mod folder under that with the modified apk
Use 7zip to open the apk
navigate the to res\drawable-xxhdpi folder (Hangouts uses the drawable-xxhdpi-v11 folder)
If you would like to see all the icons within the folder, choose Extract from the 7zip menu
Overwrite the desired png with your modified png (must be transparent, 1 layer and 192X192 max) - the new png must have the same name as the old png
Back out of the apk
Create a copy of the Color_Notification.zip and rename it accordingly
Use 7zip to open the zip
Navigate to the \data\app or \system\app folder and paste the new apk inside
back out of the zip
Copy zip to your phone, flash in recovery, profit
The blank zip is attached.

Great work bigknowz!!!!!!
Keeps failing for me when I try to run in recovery? I've tried a number of different ways, but still fails. I can't even drop the package into my files from my computer?
I'm on stock ROM, rooted, obviously. I re-installed the GAPPS package, but still no luck?

Do you get an error message in recovery? It might ask you if you want to flash untrusted zip, say yes. Anyone out there installed successfully? The zip has over 40 downloads and this is the first reported problem.
Also, any thoughts on this new Google+ icon?

Hmm...interesting? No, it fails when I try to run it in recovery and I had to download it directly on my phone, if I try to drop the file from my pc, it says "Cannot copy item the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected" HOWEVER, it will still let me drop other packages, just not this one...I re-downloaded it thinking maybe my downloaded file was corrupt, but no luck...

It will say the zip is untrusted because of the signature. Are you using flashify? Might not work with that. Redownload. If it fails again, let me know, I'll upload the file again.

Oops
Sorry @ilanderek and @superg81, fixed the OP.
This is very cool, whoever the main cons is that you have to setup manually every notification icon... I think this should be default in android, since this looks way much better than before...

Updated the Google+ color notification. Expect a new calendar zip soon, Google is pushing out an update.
I changed the OP, link to new Google+ zip is there as well.

Finally received the Calendar update, you can grab the app in the OP. The icon is attached.

I'm curious if anyone has used Rom Toolbox, and knows if it can change the color of the three soft key colors (you know, back, home, task mgr)? Or do you know how to do this WITHOUT running a ROM. I'm not a big fan of ROMs. I know how to manually replace the boot animation, but figured if ROM Toolbox can do both of these, then I will use it. Either my search skills are very crappy (which I know to be fact, lol) or nobody has ever really posted about this. Any help would be appreciated. These are last two things I need to finish my customizing. Thanks.
EDIT: CRAP! Can a mod move this to the Q&A? That's where I was, and I somehow ended up in the General section, lol. Thanks.
Edit the systemui.apk file, in the res/drawable-hdpi folder all the icons are there.
Custom ROM not needed, just root since it's a system file.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
More difficult than thought. I extracted SystemUI.apk from "system/app", replaced the default images with the ones I want to use, zipped it back up, renamed it from SystemUI.zip to SystemUI.apk, and then when I attempted to paste it back into system/app, it wouldn't let me since the folder is read only. I can't seem to change the permissions of "/system/app" so that I can paste this in there. I had a feeling this try wouldn't work, as I got the instructions from a Galaxy Nexus instruction which stated that it would really only work if a deodexed ROM was installed, but figured i'd give it a shot anyway.
I also tried using ROM ToolBox. Created my theme, but it says the theme is incompatible when I try to install it (followed the directions step by step for creating the theme). Looks like I may have to contact the developer of RTB since it would appear that the Nexus 7 isn't supported yet.
"We have compared the images and apps with your current system and have determined that this theme will not work for your current device setup."
Any other thoughts? Am I doing something wrong? Just don't really have a need for a full fledged ROM. Just wanna change 3 little software buttons, lol.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention that I also tried Zip Themer, but like RTB, it doesn't support Nexus 7 yet. I'll be sure to inform both developers

Since I am a registered Flashaholic, I find it very tedious to constantly copy my custom ringtones, notifications and alarms back into my System directory, set the appropriate permissions and reboot after each new ROM. I could leave them on my virtual SD card, but I think they play nicer with all apps when copied into the System Directory.
I have linked the Zip files I created. They were specifically created for the Nexus 4 (N4) (has ringtones) and Nexus 7 (N7) (no ringtones), but if your phone or tablet has the following directory structure: System/Media/Audio/XXX (<--- Where XXX is either alarms, notifications or ringtones), Then these might work for you too.
Additionally I have added new Zips for the N7 & N4 to allow for system files to be flashed. Already in the ZIP are ADOBE FLASH (Installed as a user app) and the Stock ICS browser (Not Chrome), which can play flash files in Jelly Bean. Remove them if you don't want them.
These zip files have some sample stuff already in them.... ... ... OK... They're my ringtones/notifications/alarms. I made them or kanged some of them... ... (Don't Judge! ).
To use your own sounds (.ogg is recommended but .mp3 will work too) just
Download the desired file(s) to your computer.
Modify the zip files for your sounds.
-To modify:
------Open the .zip with an archive program (7zip, WinRAR etc) and dig down the archive to:
system/media/audio/
------Open the folder for the type of sound you want to add and copy in your sounds and/or remove existing sounds.
------Save the zip file. Often this is automagically done by the archiver
Ensure you have the latest TWRP or CWM Recovery installed.
Copy .zip to your SD card
Flash zip file in Recovery
I usually keep the sound zip, Franco's latest kernel zip and Misledz's Nexus Louder in a separate folder on my SD card, when I flash a new ROM I line up gapps and these in Goo Manager and I'm nearly all set up! Best of all, off I dirty flash my next AOKP nightly all my sounds stay the way I set them, ringtones, notifications and alarms!
Download Links are Below.
NOTE: THESE HAVE ONLY BEEN TESTED ON THE NEXUS 4 AND NEXUS 7. FOR OTHER DEVICES, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Have Fun! And Hit Thanks if this Helped you!

N4 System Apps and Adobe Flash

For those of us with a locked bootloader who can't install CWM or TWRP, how do we install zip files? Such as a theme for a deodex TW ROM?
I've done some googling but everything I find just says "install CWM". ugh
Looks like some devs in the past have been able to modify the 3E recovery to remove the signature verification check. But I don't think we have that yet.
There is a modified 3E recovery in this thread below with instructions on how to install. But it's for a different phone and might kill ours. I dunno.

There is a huge amount of files in the extracted zip. Not really sure what all needs to be copied over. I did manually replace the systemui and it changed a few things. But I'm definitely missing quite a bit of the theme still. I'll keep playing with it for a bit longer I guess.
Edit: I think I'm starting to figure it out. There are a ton of res folders in the theme and if I open the stock APK's and copy the res contents from the theme over to the existing res folders, that might do it.
But it's time to eat dinner now.

For themes you can just open the zip file in Windows and locate the internal files. Then use those to replace the same files that are on the phone.
But the Google Play store has apps that will flash zips without needing recovery or a reboot. I don't know the names but if you Google you'll find it.
Hi Guys,
I've created GUI app to easily sideload your apks to the FTV.... I will be updating it over time with extra bells and whistles.
Please be advised I do not take any responsibility if you root your device and it gets bricked.
The link will direct you to a URL to download the app. Sorry for any inconvenience, as it's the only way I can think to help fund my app.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0ByfFwjYTfWSbejlSdXFtajZJdHc&usp=sharing#list
1. Unzip the folder to "C:\FTV"
2. Launch app "FTV Side App Installer.exe"
3. CMD will launch automatically and run the ADB commands.
4. Once its all done it will confirm "Success" in the CMD window.
I've only tested it on Win8, but should work on Win7.

Really nice app. Great looking interface.
One thing I would add (if it wasn't a total PITA) would be device discovery (like you see with a lot of iOS device jailbreak tools) where the app scans the LAN for devices in the correct MAC range and displays them in the app window.
As it stands, this is still a nice app.

Make sure you don't have any spaces in the apk file name. Replace with a full stop or remove any spaces.

shorten file name by removing numericals helped.

Hey, folks!!
Most of us moved to Lollipop and keep seeing many bugs and some of the Apps missing like for eg. Gallery.
Searches end me with Gallery Apps which weren't fully working. Desperated and frustrated me, finally did find one working app and thought of sharing it with others who would really be interested.
You can flash the App via Custom Recovery or can do it manually by moving the desired folder using a file manager, like Total Commander (this is what am using). Many are available based on your interest. Remember to extract the zip and move the folders to another location and then place in the respective places.
Editing Images is possible with this App if you correctly place the lib file at /system/lib
I myself have tried only the KK Gallery on N4 & N5 which is working flawlessly
http://nexus5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/get-back-gallery-app-any-nexus-device-running-lollipop-0158858/
PS: If this is outta XDA Rules then Mods can remove the thread.
Folks, am just sharing so everyone can make use of what is required.
I want to use the motorola gallery. It looks nice. But what lib file should I place in /system/lib? It isn't in the flashable zip...

Yes I am on stock 5.0.1. Rooted it and installed TWRP. Tried that zip and several others but none of them worked. Also created a flashable zip myself. But that didnt work either...
By flashing it, the app comes in the /system/app folder but doen't appaer in the app drawer and trying to copy it manually ends up in an error (see attachments).
I guess I will be re-flashing factory images and see if it works after that.

By flashing it, the app comes in the /system/app folder but doen't appaer in the app drawer and trying to copy it manually ends up in an error (see attachments).
I guess I will be re-flashing factory images and see if it works after that.

Dude, why don't you try installing it? I tried the KK Gallery as such (open & install) and it works well
