[advice]things to do with your outdated galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III General

If you have played with your Galaxy S3 for a very long time.......now the time has come to make it ready for some freaky roms and tweaks.
FIRST THING TO DO IS
1.ROOT your android phone
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/root-galaxy-s3-i9300xxugna7-android-4-3-jelly-bean-1435664
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/root-galaxy-s3-i9300xxugna7-android-4-3-jelly-bean-1435664
Follow the rules posted here.
2.Install Custom Rom,I prefer CMhttp://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=i9300&type=nightly
Many of the users don't like to use VANILLA UI after using TOUCHWIZ UI.
So,I prefer instaling MIUI.Even if MIUI is based on older version of Android,it is still one of the best custom rom I have ever used for a phone.\
Here is the link for it too
="http://enbigota.d.miui.com/4.4.11/miui_i9300_4.4.11_436e5b96d5_4.1.zip"
This version of MIUI is based on Android 4.2.2
3.FLASH Philz recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/i93xx-philz-touch-t2002953
4.Now that you are bored, flash the stock firmware and sell your S3 and grab a new phone.
http:http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/install-i9300xxugna5-android-4-3-stock-firmware-galaxy-s3-1434726//
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I first received my phone,I was very curious to flash Custom Roms, tweaks. But after making all these things,I sold my phone and bought a Nexus 4

If you are on here, you rooted and flashed a custom rom well before you thought the s3 was an old phone

Give it to me for free. That's what you should do with it.

Why not a Nexus 5?

100% root your phone and get rid of the ugly stock OS IMO.

How long did you used your s3? And how much do you know about it.

When I read the title I expected something like:
1. Take a camera
2. Take a hammer
3. Start recording while you hit your phone
4. Throw it as high as possible

Debating on rooting my S4

Hi everyone! I just upgraded to the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Before I had the original Galaxy Note. I've rooted and loaded custom ROM's on all my previous Android devices (Captivate, Inspire 4G, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Note), but I'm debating on rooting this device. It's running great on the stock ROM.
Has anyone else debated this? If so, did you go ahead and root and loaded a ROM then regret it or were you glad you did it?
You can run it absolutely stock and still be rooted. Rooting gives you the advantage of certain apps that require it, as I'm sure you know, such as Titanium Backup, Root explorer and others. Plus ability to get rid of AT&T apps you never do or never will use. fwiw
Root it! You want regret it. The possibilities are endless. And if you do prefer a stock like rom, well believe me there are GREAT custom stock like roms that these great devs have put together that run flawlessly with added benefits. Hope this helps. Happy Rooting

even if you plan to keep the stock ROM, its worth it to root so you can uninstall the AT&T bloatware and remove the AT&T splash screen on start-up.

I am on stock with root. I rooted it using Adam's casual only to have TiBu work. I froze all ATT bloats and some google and samsung apps. The stock is very fine for me.
Now I am debating to flash Paranoid rom to try their multiwindow and halo features...
Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it. Knowing me I'll end up rooting it and loading a ROM since I can't leave stuff alone. HA!
Does anyone know if there's a ROM out there that someone has gotten Bluetooth Tethering to work? That's one thing I miss from ICS on my Galaxy Note.
Hey gk
In same boat, been flashing roms hundreds of times for over 3 years from early Nexus One days. Most of the reasons were to get newer OS's without waiting. However, one of the reasons I got the S4 was it already has the latest as in 4.2.2.
One thing I have learned as most of us have is there always seems to be something not 100% on each rom for some folks. Goes with the territory as we know. Although, I have been lucky in that area. Maybe due to lots of reading and proper pre-install wipes. Hats off to all the devs though for their long and tiresome hours giving us these great roms.
My concern, since this is early on with the S4 and no unlocked bootloader, are our chances higher to have issues.
My phone with all it's "gimmicks" is running fast and perfect--NO issues. I also would like TiBu and eventually a custom recovery for nandroids even if I don't flash a custom rom. Used both CWM and TWRP in the past. Also, Amon_Ra. All worked great for me.
But, like you and others will probably root and flash a custom recovery anyway.
Damn Samsung for making this so tough of a decision--
I was in same position lol I've been flashing andneven Ade a few Roms but ya know its cool and all but its a hassel sometimes enough for me to be stock! There's no reason IMO to flash anything this phone is packed to the gills with features already and its on a very new os so I feel like I wanna root and flash away but have found no reason to YET key word there and of course its purely my own standpoint

Root it! You can get new features before they come to your carrier. ... I debated it and told myself I would stay rooted but run stock rom.... now they figured out ways to bypass the bootloader and flash roms and im back to crack flashing lol. ..
Yup. I thought I wouldn't root this thing. That lasted a week. Then I told myself it's fine the way it is, I don't need to flash a rom. That lasted 3 weeks. I'm not a flashaholic though. I usually pick one and stick with it for a while.
You think it runs fine until you've rommed it and added a kernel. Then you realize you had no idea how fine it could be.

I wouldn't ever even own a phone that I couldn't root. It just gives you freedom over your phone. Again you don't NEED to run a custom rom to be rooted, but check out some of the TW custom Tom's that just take the phone to another level but still being stock

I was a flashaholic on the captivate, and S II. I loved trying new ROMs like Miui and AOKP. But, since I got the Note II and now the S 4 I don't have that desire. My only reason for rooting usually was TiBu, and only from flashing so often. Without flashing a new ROM each week I had little need for restoring apps. After three weeks I finally rooted and started trying ROMs on this phone. It was about the same for my Note. I really like TouchWiz, and miss some of those features on AOSP based ROMs. I don't see the performance need for custom ROMs on either of these phones like I did on the older phones. I guess it just came out of boredom, in the end.

Well, I finally gave in and rooted--knew I would
Used Adam's Casual--very easy--much more so than my HTC phones
TiBu and Nandriods already in use
Next step roms--
Still haven't rooted yet. I probably will over the weekend. Why can't I leave stuff alone? HA!

Hi guys, Just made it after 6 Years with an iphone and iOS i moved on to Android got myself a nexus 4
im still struggling with the android.
just wanted to know what is the latest pacman rom for nexus 4? and where can i download it?
cause i could only find packman rom 23 for note II.(maybe i can install this one on my nexus 4?)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2146879
This is where PACman rom is. Stick with Android. You will never look back. And if you BADLY want IOS back, MIUI gives a similar experience.

Before doing any modifications to your phone, get to know android, read the wiki's about terminology and how stuff work around here. You'll be doing yourself a big favor, and escaping a potential "Help-i bricked my device" thread. You can't flash roms from other devices.
One more tip, post questions in the Q&A section, you'll get better support and answers there.

Just bought phone of craigslist

Hey guys I just got this G2 today for 240 off craigslist. I currently have a note 3 as a daily driver and wanted to experiment with this thing. I'm really into rooting and the note 3 development is slow at best. So i have the phone and i started poking around and learn that i'm already rooted .. There is a custom recovery installed i think it said phils somethign recovery.... it's rooted and all that.. i dont know what to do. .I made a back up... do I need to do anything else? Is the bootloader installed? I'm lost. But i'm really excited to get an AOKP rom or something .. Where do I go from here?

Probably Philz Touch 6? What is it running stock? Kitkat or JellyBean?
I had the exact same thing as you (bought it off a similar website) and mine had JellyBean,
so I flashed a stock Kitkat Rom onto it but kept the root. Loving it so far
Well Well have Pacman installed. Have been having issues. Not Not sure why. Is there anything more stable.

First time Android user. I jailbroke several iphones in the past but just learning about rooting. I just did the towelroot, now what????
What is cyanogenmod? Do I need it?
Thanks for everyone who helps out!
Download rom manager from play store and use it to flash a custom recovery.. It should be simple
After that you can flash cyanogenmod which is a ROM that changes your phones interface to almost stock android with some added features

As far as I know the ATT S5 has a locked boot loader and hence cannot use custom recoveries or ROMs. For now you are stuck with the ROM you have. You are able to modify your ROM now though.

Two things you should consider..
First of all, if you install a custom kernel/recovery, it will void your warranty (this is called as tripping the KNOX flag). Currently, this is something that you cannot fix by yourself and if your phone breaks Samsung may or may not fix it. But that doesn't actually matter since your phone is on ATT and that one is bootloader locked anyway (which means that currently you cannot flash that recovery anyway).
Second thing is that currently CM11 is pretty broken and some features like GPS and Camera aren't working. It will take some time before people manage to iron out all the bugs and even then it might not be perfect.
My advice is that you should first try to get familiar with the phone and then start thinking about modifying it since you aren't used to Android phones. While rooting might give you some functionality you normally wouldn't have, it's not really something that you'll absolutely need. Even out of the box Android is still way more capable and customizable than iOS and most of that stuff doesn't need rooting.

Any ROM without root?

So, long story short my mum had an iPhone 5, and she wanted a larger phone. The 6 and 6 Plus were way too expensive, so I said to get the Note 4. She loved it, at first. She then started to get more and more angry at it, since TouchWiz crashed often. So I said I'd custom ROM it, after all, I had done the same to my step dad's S5, he's pleased now. BUT, CM12 nightlies aren't exactly stable, and she gets crashing and stuff. Plus, she wants to be able to use her banking app, since it blocks phones with root. It works fine on my OnePlus One with Paranoid Android. Is there any kind of ROM for the Note 4, any PA ROM, any ROM without root? And no, I'm not putting it back on a TouchWiz based ROM.
How can you have a rom without root? You've already rooted it to put a custom rom on it.
Anyways I'm on TeKXodus 5.01 rom right now and its WAY better than stock. Check out his thread.

You can install a rom and then simply un-root it afterwards. This gives you custom rom without root

I see this very often, but it isn't true.
you don't need to root for a custom rom.
on most devices (including the note 4) you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader(it's often unlocked out of the box) for a custom rom.
some device(like gen8 archos devices) even allow custom roms with the official recovery thanks to a developer mode, or they don't have a signature check and just let you flash custom roms through an official updating utility(such as the old advent vega which accepted custom roms flashed through nvflash)
