Hi,
Could anyone please explain the various settings for GPS in the "settings" menu (under "location")? I find that the manual and tooltips are not very informative.
Particularly, I don't understand the difference between the first choice ("wireless networks"?) and the third choice ("assisted GPS"). I understand that the phone may use wifi or mobile network to detect my position (instead of or in addition to GPS satelites), but I don't know which of the two options to choose for this.
Also: When I enable "wireless networks", what does the warning that pops up mean? It mentions that data will be collected even when no software (GPS/map) is running. What is that? And what is the difference between enabling this and the fourth option ("share with google")?
Finally:
Does your GPS immediately start working when you enable it? Myself, I need to enable/disable GPS using the desktop widget and the various GPS settings several times before it managess to find my location. (My position is not the problem - once detected/connected, it works fine.) I still don't understand which combination of settings it is that finally makes the GPS work as expected.
As I understand the first option "Wireless Neworks" will rely entirely on data from Cell Towers e.t.c to determine your position. I guess this will be less accurate.
"Assisted GPS" enables your device to get a faster lock on your location by collecting available data from cell towers first before using the GPS receiver.
I think if you were only to activate the GPS in some circumstances it would take a lot longer to get a fix.
"Share with Google" just allows the gears addon within the browser to share your position with google allowing them to return results based on your location.
That's my take on those options.
"Wireless Neworks" - is using cell towers and wifi to locate you.
Probably they have (or use a 3rd party DB) for that. Anyway, is not (very) accurate.
"Assisted GPS" - i'm not 100% sure but i think is connecting to a location server to get the location of the GPS satellite so, will lock faster (at least this is what my Nokia 5800xm is doing).
The warning message you get is because google will (most likely) use your location (cell towers and wifi spots) to create and update their own database so, phones without GPS will still be able to use google maps.
Well, they probably do something more with that data but who knows what
I just wanna add that using any type of assistance for the gps chip in this phone is (in my personal oppinion) unnecessary. I am sitting inside my house, in my bed(with a window behind me) an in 10sec i get fixed on 10 satellites. Not much that can beat that ;-)
in addition, i am in the bottom floor in a 2floor house so it is alot of roof and cealing between me and the sky.

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated.
Just curious - which app do you use to monitor GPS satelites?
Also, does everyone's GPS find your location rather quickly after enabling GPS? I usually get the message "Your current position is temporarily unavailable", I retry, same result, I retry, same result ... Only after I disable/enable GPS several times, my position can be found.
My GPS usually finds my position rather quickly first time I switch on GPS. I have aGPS (Assisted GPS) enabled too, this way your phone gets help on locating the sattelites position from your mobile provider, hence locking onto GPS signal faster (is to my understanding).
Plus, if you're standing in an area with tall buildings, your position will be less accuratelly pin-pointed, bouncing GPS signal and all.
I'm using GPS test by chartcross ltd. Avalible in the free android market, and i really like it!

I never turned on A-GPS on this phone. There is no need for A-GPS.
This phone have fastest GPS fix of all phones.
I have noticed when I am running on 3G (H) I get the "location temporarily unavailable" notice, but if I force it to not go to 3G it will be E and I get my location. This holds true if I have setting for using GPS or not.
This seems to be a problem with Google Maps using the data transfer method of 3G (H) versus E.
Hello:
I try use the GPS of Sprint Hero in Argentina (there are no operators that use CDMA)
and I can not find the satellite signals, what I can do?
Thanks in advance
Gps will not work without a network location first. You may be able to connect to a wifi and it work, maybe.

Try to use the GPS while connected to wi fi and have not had luck. There fix something?

Are you using a custom ROM, or just stock 2.1?
Probably nothing you can do. The gps hardware is not powerful enough to work without a network location.

Today i'm using CM6 but try with the original sprint rom

my thoughts are...
GPS works.. but without data it has no reference.
Maps must be downloaded via some internet connection. Maybe a wifi can help u.
or
you can download a stand alone GPS map app. CoPilot is a good one, but cost $30.
Yeah, but the gps can't even find a lock without a recent network signal to tell it where to start looking. It's not a full on gps antenna.

I have been traveling around the world recently with my EVO and using the GPS to do so. It's GPS chip is no better than the Hero's I believe.
Things to keep in mind, without aGPS help, it can take these things up to 30 minutes to find your correct location. Usually it takes 4 strong signals to pinpoint it. Download GPS Status from the market and it will show you all of the satellites it is picking up as well as the strengths and you will know when you have a lock. It will also allow you to keep the phone awake and the gps active until it gets a fix. This is probably your main problem. If the phone is not actively using the gps, it turns off the chip and never gets a chance to get a fix.
You need to run GPS status preferably when you are connected to a wifi signal and outside with a clear shot of the sky. It can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 minutes depending on if you are on a wifi connection, how far away you are from the last known lock stored in the chip (GPS Status will display this for you) and also how far from the equator you are, etc. If you are very far south in argentina it can be a LOT more difficult GPS to work... I noticed my GPS had waaay more trouble up in sweden than it did down in central europe.
Also, Download mapdroyd and get the maps for the area you are in. It works pretty well for a free locally stored map app. GPS Status also allows you to add pins/labels to gps coordinates and then do a radar type guidance back to them. Between these two tools and now knowing how to connect your phone, you should never get lost again, providing your battery does not die. Luckily I brought 4 extra batteries with me!
I have found that some apps that are location aware or ask me to pick local servers, often suggest servers on the east coast. I am on the west coast of the US. When I am on wifi this does not happen, it is only happening on 3g. When I toggle on wifi is suggests local servers. I have went into location settings and toggled on and off the settings for GPS as well as the "use wireless" option and it does nothing to help the issue.
The maps app as well as navigation work perfectly fine for locating me, this seems to be isolated to apps.
Thats usually an indication your gps is not working. When you use speedtest app with out wifi does it ask you to connect to kansas?
Speed test isn't a good way to find out as it will connect you sometimes to the least busiest server. Gps needs to lock first on a couple sats first time usage after that should be better.
Xda app via atrix
I wad able to get it calibrated correctly. I went outside and calibrated the compass first. I then did a gps lock from maps and then tapped lock again and let it sit for about 2 minutes. Everything is fine as of now.

GPS in Atrix locks the satellite very quick. It could be comparable to a standalone GPS.
How does Google Navigation work? Does it depend on GPS or cellular network or both?
I have a Tmobile Note 3 and sometimes, when my mobile data is showing "E" the Google Maps app can't even get a GPS lock?
Is it the phone? Do I have a lemon?
My friend has a Galaxy Note 3 on Verizon and her Google Maps worked just fine. Her data was showing 4G LTE.
Is anyone here an expert on how Google Maps works? I thought it only needed GPS? I tried all the different GPS settings ("full", power save, GPS only, etc) and none of them made any difference.
I m not an expert, just sharing with you what i know, Google maps can work only on gps but with data pcg locking to gps & loading of maps will be much faster, navigation is a feature now built inside Google maps required internet for navigat to certain destination.

you can use Google Maps without GPS also, its gets location from the cellular towers around you. but its not always perfect as towers can be near you or far away
So for perfect accuracy GPS is required. GPS lock depends on many reason.
Thanks! Is anyone else using Google Maps/Navigation on a Note 3 with Tmobile?
How good does it do GPS lock?
You know one thing? If your maps are cached, you don't even need internet to get a GPS lock......

"E" mean edge which is 2.4g network and slower internet. with "E" the maps slower to download map images, sometime very slower it cant load the full map and it stuck. as the map not loaded the gps doesnt work.
I'm not on Tmobile but whenever I'm traveling on rural areas out of the city, it doesnt work properly until it get a HSPDA network. and for this situation its better to keep it in high accuracy mode, but without gps the navigation doesnt give proper location.
Google maps can work only with gps & data/wifi...But i think if you search on the internet, there is a way to work gMaps and navigate offline!!
google maps uses your data and GPS.
you can 'download' areas to make it work without data and only on GPS.

I gave up on GM and tried various data free satnav type aps,I now use navfree

When I'm on "E," it says "Searching for GPS" like forever and never locks. It's quite frustrating.

Try do the same thing on a high speed network like wifi, hspds. If that doesnt work go to app, clear all google map app data and cache and then try again.
Please make sure if you have the issue with the GPS hardware then it will does same on highspeed network too. Mine does something same, but i forgot how it does on Edge.
Also what type of cover you're using, if any. magnets of cover sometime malfunction hardware, like compass spen etc, mine effect on spen. So if you're using any cover with magnet the try with removing it.
According to me this phone could malfunction any hardware, its nothing weird, mine vibration doesnt working these days, its a 6month new phone and never dropped.

The GPS lock works fine when I have LTE. But, the arrow thing looks like it's drifting when I'm driving sometimes. For example, it sometimes doesn't point in the same direction that I'm driving. I tried resetting my compass with the figure 8 trick already, doesn't help.
I have a TPU cover.
Let's start from the beginning:
You can set what is used for your location:
under KK my phone has following options:
1 High accuracy - uses GPS, wifi and cell network
2 power save - uses wifi and mobile network only
3 gps only
So the question is not "what is used for location", but "how is your phone set up?"
Any other setting but 1st, will have issues.
if settings are proper then try using GPS test or gps status program to see if hardware is working properly. if that's ok, maybe need to clear cache or reinstall program.
I am using a rooted nexus 6p, I also have a nexus 6 with the same issue, and I'm trying to fake gps locations for a game that requires walking. For some reason the fake location and the real location keep switching back and forth. I've tried turning off all the settings for gps with no luck.
This thread was opened http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/mock-locations-fake-gps-t3408407 and closed with the issue being resolved to using a specific app. This does not help me in debugging my app if I can't use apps that mimic walking.
It does not seem right that a specific phone can't hide real gps data. I don't even have a sim card in my nexus 6 and it's still finding my location. This seems like a phone bug that has yet to be reported.
In developer options there's an option called "Select mock location app". Did you tried it?
I have this same exact problem on a Nexus 6P. I've tried multitudes of mock GPS apps. I've selected the mock location app as well as used rooted mockers that don't even require a mock location selection. I've tried all GPS settings (GPS + WiFi, WiFi, GPS only) and they all flicker back and forth. I've seen other people have this issue too. I can even see it happening in Google Maps. XPrivacy is able to feed fake location data to a chosen app and that works great but it isn't convenient as you have to type in the coords. The real GPS really shouldn't interfere with the mock GPS (especially if the setting is on) but for whatever reason the Nexus 6P GPS gives no ****s about where you want to be, its in charge and you're gonna sit right where you are god dammit. Right now my best option is to use tin foil to render the real GPS useless unless I want to physically remove the thing but seriously what gives? I even just wiped my phone and flashed the latest PureNexus and still have the issue.
Same problem
I have the same thing going on with my Nexus 6p. After like 2 seconds it just flickers back and forth.. do have exposed framework to mock mock location.
It looks like com.google.android.gms from "Google Play Services" is being used to get the real GPS locations? How do we stop this?
Quit trying to cheat on Pokémon Go! Lol
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
Your opinion and assumptions really aren't necessary. The issue here is why the physical GPS interferes with the mock GPS on this device.
I have the same issue. Tried many apps, none worked. I'm on stock MTC19X. (also it seems when I have more than 1 fake location app installed, switching between them is funky. Sometimes they don't stick in the Dev option.)
*** I may have found a solution posted on stackoverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/...ymore?newreg=4100ab40b3704404852e05938ec2ca05). It seems to be working w/o flicker. Tested on Pokémon Go since vwood2121 mentioned it
Also you'll need to reverse it to get the gps working again.
"I managed to fix this problem by disabling the "Fused Location" service on my phone. I used the Disable Service application which requires root privileges to run. After disabling the "Fused Location" service I stopped teleporting to my real location."
Confirmed
