[Q] Screen issue and charging - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, mates, have a few problems that I want to discuss.
First of all, the screen issue. I don't believe any of you had such thing but sometimes when I wake the device, the touch screen is just crazy. I mean I touch somewhere specificaly, but the screen 'gets' the touch somewhere else. Plus, sometimes, I don't know if it's lag or smth but the screen starts moving through pages even though I didn't touch the screen. I happens after device has been asleep for a while. Reboot solves this problem but it is a problem even trying to select the reboot option. Sometimes it's like some side of screen isn't responding. Tried different roms, still nothing (the stock one also did this).
Then there is charging problem. Well, it's not a problem, actualy. My nexus charger got broken and I bought a moderate price new not asus charger, which states that the output is 2.1 A. But my nexus can't get more than ~600 mA output with that charger. Using a phone charger 1.1 amps output everything is fine, the battery monitor shows about 1000 mA while screen is off. So the question is, whether there is a kernel/rom that would have a fastcharge feauture (like some phone kernels have) or there are some of them but I'm not smart enough to turn fastcharge on?
I tried franco's, faux, oxydos, kangaroo, M-kernel.

Screen goes blank

Twice yesterday my GT screen went blank. The tablet isn't dead because I can see the backlight on at about 10% brightness. Gives off an eerie gray tone to the screen.
The screen and volume controls do nothing to revive it. However, holding down the power button for about 20 seconds turns the unit off. From there I can reboot.
One of the times happened during the night while I was recharging the unit. It locks the unit up so tight that the charger stops charging. When I unplugged it from the charger and rebooted it in the morning it only had a 42% charge.
Any idea why this is happening? Since it affects charging it appears to be hardware related. Can a software hiccup cause the charger to stop charging?
If it keeps up I may do a factory reset to see if that solves it.
Anyone else having this issue?
Sorry but I haven't had anything like that happen...but I wouldn't tolerate it for more than a couple days.
out of juice ?
Are you using USB charging or the wall charging plug ?
There's a BIG difference in charge .. USB trickles and once the screen is on or you're downloading .. it discharges ..
This has happened to me a few times too. I figured it was just some odd bug.
I haven't experienced this on either of our tabs (both are 16GB (retail) a white and a gray both rooted nothing custom as of yet/ both have locked bootloaders)
Probably not relevant, but I see 2 people have posted this experience. So I ask are either of you rooted or using custom kernel/rom, 16GB/32GB?
This happended to me a couple of times:/ actually happened 2 hours ago. I realized within an hour so only lost 30 percent. I hope there will be a fix with touchwiz ux, even though i don't want to update it to touchwiz, I might have to
This has happened to me, and I am not rooted.

Not rooted and I only charge with wall charger.
Someone asked if I was rooted, I am. Was running stock kernel and rom the first few times this happened though. Only charge with oem charger, although I've only seen it happen once while on charger.
Sounds like it's shutting down but not completing the power-off.
When you power off the tablet - you'll see it do the same thing - it's the backlight that's still on.
If you have access to the android dev tools/adb - use: adb logcat and see if there's any useful output about what's happening.

[Q] Touch and charger.

Hey guys,
A friend of mine recently bought this tablet and everything was running very very smooth, until he received the OTA to 3.1 . Besides the wifi bug ( very easy to get rid of ), he is now experiencing a really really weird touch lag. Let me explain: as soon as he plugs the tablet in the charger the touch gets really unresponsive forcing him to slide/touch several times before the tablet detects the input even if the system keeps working as it should, ie no slowdowns etc.
Funny things is this bug only shows up (for now) when he plugs the charger in university while not happening at home.
Has anyone experienced the same? Im starting to think that the charger plug has a defect and is in some way affecting the touch system ( electric\magnetic stuff ) leading this to an hardware related problem, but I want to be sure so maybe we will try to flash something (Are there Acer tools to flash full stock roms?). Tablet is running original rom and recovery, I just messed with the wpa_supplicant files but I dont see how this could be related.
Thanks in advance guys
When my screen is off and I turn it back on when I switch from charger to battery I get laggie for a minute. Same on my notebook and my cell.I believe its to do with changing some power profiles/settings. If you recover in a minute or so its prob fine. If not watch running apps. If you see something running all the time.use a freeze program to trouble shoot if its a rouge app.
Hope this helps to troubleshoot your isssue
If im wrong with this information please just give your correct response to the open. Do not bash my openion.thanks

110 volts

When you plug your charger in the fram becomes hot. 110 volts to earth. Just check it, can't be good.

Fram? 110 volts? What are you talking about?
More details - please. "110 volts to earth"? Not making much sense.
My guess, and its just a guess, is that his charger is somewhat faulty and not regulating the power correctly. Ask him if he plugs straight to the wall at university and into a power strip/surge protector at home. If he is, then I would imagine that the power strip is regulating the voltage enough to let the charger work, where the wall outlet is making the charger fail. I'd try a new charger if one is available and see if that fixes the issue...or take a surge protector with him to university and see if that also takes care of it. If he isn't using a power strip at either place, then we are back at square one.
Have you tried going back to an unmodded system to see if that works? (by that I mean remove/undo wpa supplicant).
I have no idea what that problem could be as it seems hardware based by just reading what you typed, but it could be software too which is called into question by the little mod you did.
What I find odd is that it works in one place and not another.
Does it happen when Wifi is off completely? (Just asking because I'm thinking if it has to do with the wifi mod you made, perhaps turning Wifi off and testing would show up something).
I'll just tell you what I would try in that situation.
1. Go back to a stock ROM, fully. No mods, no root, no hacks. Preferably one designed for your region. (We have no idea if any of the hardware in these units is different based on region, which is why I never recommend putting a ROM on the device unless it's 100% certified to be originated from a device purchased within that region).
2. Factory reset. (It doesn't fix everything, but it fixes most software glitches - especially when they're caused by outside sources like apps or settings mess ups).
If it still happens after that then you've at least ruled out all software suspects.
The frame of the a500 is hot. The charger is none polorized so makes no difference which way you plug it into the wall or extention plug is the same. Check your charger to earth and you will see line voltage no mater where it's pluged in, and don't have to be pluged into the a500. They need replaced. Just meter from the outside of the charger plug to ground and you will see the problem. Might not be on all chargers, but I would check mine.
Just check you charger plug to earth without the a500 pluged in, the problem is not in the unit or software just the charger.

I had an issue like this with a palm pre, and the only solution i could determine was that i was using an offbrand charger that wasn't supplying the right voltage/amperage and causing flakiness with the electrical charge on the screen. maybe the charger is damaged, or they're using an off-brand one?
Ty guys and sorry for the late reply. Yeah I was thinking about reverting back to the stock system but unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the tablet scene not having one and since he is a little frustrated atm about his situation maybe flashing a recovery to flash a stock rom isnt really the way to go. Isn't Acer delivering any tool to flash a full rom just to try if that will solve the problem?
Thanks again!
So wait someone is getting 110v from ground to the metal frame of the tablet?

Same issue
I found this thread, and this is exactly what's happening to my tablet. When it's plugged in, the screen becomes very unresponsive, and it's very annoying. I can't charge it and use it at the same time. It's not even like galaxy tab 10.1 or ipad 2 where the battery life lasts like 10 hours! I am extremely frustrated about this issue..Mine has this issue at home. I don't bring charger to school, so I don't know about that. I'm really surprised that only very few people actually have this issue..
electrical grounding no good
Anyone has a solution to this?? Should I buy a new charger? I don't want to just waste money if it's not gonna fix the problem.
Thanks.
I had a similar experience to all of this when I was recently travelling by airplane. There were charging outlets (US-style 2-prong) on the back of each seat and my tablet absolutely REFUSED to respond properly to touch when I plugged it in. At the airport, in the hotel, at home, and everywhere else I've used it, it worked properly.
My conclusion: touch screens on A500 are very sensitive to electrical problems. I suspect that an airplane's electrical system isn't as "standard" as everywhere else, and whatever the difference was (a grounding issue, or a voltage regulation issue, or whatever) caused the touchscreen to freeze.
My suggestion to the poster and others with "when I plug in the touch screen stops working": go to another location (i.e., a friend's house, work, school, a coffee shop, etc.), plug in and see if the same problem happens. If it does, it might be your charger, so try someone else's A500 charger at a bunch of locations and see if the the same problem occurs.
I would guess that most people with this problem (not the "when I plug it in it gets for a few seconds" problem, but the "touch screen doesn't work when plugged in" problem) will find a solution lies in their power source, not the A500 itself.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm actually moving to a new home tomorrow, so I'll try the new power outlet. Hope it won't have problems like right now..

I have run into another problem related to touch screens - mine doesn't work on airplanes. I think that there is some sort of pressure differential issue - the screen works fine on the ground, but once I open the tablet when the plane is at altitude, the screen just stops working - it doesn't matter if the tablet is plugged in or not.
Annoying to say the least. Last night I pulled out my wireless mouse to use the tablet, and a stewardess noticed this and told me to put it away as wireless devices aren't allowed on airplanes.......
Any suggestions?

dead

It appears dead. It's late at night so i've yet to try googling about recovery through a pc of some such, truth be told while i can flash a rom with instructions, i'm no guru or anything. It was running CM 10.2? the latest stable release for N10, think that's the one.
I was just browsing a forum, and after posting, the disply started to stutter as i scrolled up, when i stopped scrolling, the stuttering decreased, and then as i scrolled and scrolled fasster, the stuttering increased until display turned black (stoned curiosity...) and now i can't get anything out of my N10. Holding power, trying to reboot into recovery. Nothing. No lights, sounds, vibrations. None of the normal stuff.
anyone got any ideas for me to awke up to? I think that if i can't get any life out of it, then would it be a case of trying to sideload or such with ADB? as i say, i'm a complete rookie, just a couple of flashes under my belt.
Second question, i probably have the answer to, but am i right in thinking custom roms void the warranty?
edit: Plugged it into the wall a few minutes ago. It had had about 40% remaining, but when i plugged it in, i got the battery simbol on the screen (big white battery charging in center) and any time i press or hold the power button, or with volume buttons, i get nothing but the icon. I'll keep it plugged in for now and see what happens. But by the look of i assume if it can do that when plugged into the wall i sohuld hpoefully be able to connect via my computer in some manner
If by stuttering you mean blinking, this has happened to me when my N10 was on charger with a dead battery and it drew more power than what the charger could provide. When you scroll, the CPU frequency gets bumped up and the tablet consumes more power. After a while it just turned off for me (when I changed to an other app I think), when there just wasn't enough power.
So I would suggest leaving it on charge for a few hours, then try holding all buttons and see if you can get into bootloader. I've had the battery levels not display correctly on some custom ROMs, (for example I would do a reboot at 60% battery and after it reboots it only said 13%) so just charging it a bit might solve the problem.

Thanks. As of 5 minutes ago it got back to life. All battery apps showed 40 odd. Strange.
i think your battery has gone/ on its way out, exact same happened to mine, you need a pogo charger and the original wall adapter to provide enough power to switch it on. Only thing which worked for me, hope it works for you.

Might be the battery, might be glitchy software. Plugged it in via USB and it worked sometime later. Will be keeping an eye on it.
It will probably be fine. I thought I had a bricked N10 but turns out the battery was dead. It is fine now. THought I had a bricked N7 also, turned out the battery plug got loose, (screen would flash every 2 seconds with static on the screen) popped it open and oushed the plug in and that is fine now too.
If it continues to die around the 40-50% mark, you'll need to send it in for repairs. Make sure they don't just try replacing the USB port on it, the battery itself is the culprit.

problem - daydream vs sleep

Hi,
So I was using my Nexus 7 wall mounted, and on KK daydream worked perfectly. I had quotes scrolling all day, and if you needed something you just touched the screen and the quotes would go away, and you could do whatever you needed. I upgraded to 5.1 and now the tablet daydreams for a little while, but then the screen turns off, necessitating pressing the power button to wake the tablet up. I flashed pure nexus for MM last night thinking this was something inherent to 5.1, but it is still doing it under the new rom.
Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I basically just want a screen saver that goes away when you touch the touchscreen.
Thanks,
Josh
No one else is having this problem? Or am I the only one who uses daydream?
So, I had the tablet plugged into an outlet that had two USB ports in it (I installed an outlet that had a regular 110v plug on the top and 2 USB ports where the second outlet would normally be). I pulled the USB cable out of the outlet USB port, and took a standard 1.35a wall wart and plugged it into the regular outlet, and then the tablet daydreamed for several hours before going to sleep. What am I doing wrong?
A few ppl have had issues with 5.1 regarded charging/lag/ deep sleep, but iv yet to see a conclusive answer to these problems, I for one since lollipop have had a few issues, first was serious lag and power drain while charging, now after a few updates on the Rom I'm using I'm only having charging issues, however what promoted me to reply here is today I noticed that when my daydream came on the battery% would stay where it is but if I interrupted the daydream by pressing the power button and tuning it off the battery% would go up, so I'm assuming that daydream is causing some sort of power drain while powered on and charging cause I don't have this issue when my tab is powered off and charging. As for the deep sleep thing I think it's a kernel thing cause at present I'm also testing an update to the ROM I'm using and I'm having the same issue that you have mentioned, I created a thread under (power drain) there is a link to the 5.1 Rom I'm using try it v1.9.4 is stable I did not have the daydream/ deep sleep issue on that.

galaxy s5 display issues

My galaxy s5 started acting up a month ago. The screen will flicker green/yellow then go black, or stay black entirely. It got a lot worse recently where it will only work hitting the power button 1% of the time. Is this a hardware issue? Or software?
When the screen dims before sleep, it spazzes out too. I've noticed it works better when it warms up from charging too. But still fails to display way too much. It still registers touch when black. I replace the battery a few months ago BTW.
If the device has no hope, can you guys reccomend a good cheap phone?
Put your phone on max brightness & set your phone to never turn the screen off
Leave your phone screen turned on with max brightness for a at least a few hours
If that doesn't solve it then you may need a new screen - it is a hardware fault on these devices with these types of screens
If I were you I'd also follow the advice of
TheFixItMan said:
. I'd make sure to run a slideshow in your gallery while having your screen at max brightness though as this may reduce the risk of having burn-in on your screen.
If all fails you could buy a new display for your S5. I did so myself recently as I kept having "snowstorms" on my display when I turned my phone/ the screen on. Worked for me, managed to get a new and genuine one from a reputable seller on eBay. Hope you won't have to resort to the latter though.

@TheFixItMan thanks for the advice, I tried it last night, and it didn't improve at all. Is there any possibility that the device isn't giving the screen enough power? Because I have better success when its plugged in. What do you think caused this to happen after 5 years?
@James160103 Thanks, I tried it and it didn't work. I'm exploring all my options. For $10 more then an OEM gs5 screen, I can get a gs7.
Perhaps it's got something to do with your new battery then, did you buy a genuine Samsung battery? How about sticking the old one back in and seeing if that makes a difference?
Also try using a genuine Samsung power adapter and charging cable.
It's worth a try anyway. Let me know if that made a change.
If it doesn't help you could remove the screen from the phone and press the flex cable from the digitizer downwards to see if it might be a loose connection between the motherboard and the screen that's causing the problem. I'd try that as a last resort though as you could damage your display in the process (replaced the screen myself and managed not to break anything, did it for the first time). There's lots of videos on YouTube (I recommend JerryRigEverything) that could help you out.
While this is unlikely, you may want to try before buying an S7.
Also, try booting into TWRP and playing around with the brightness settings and turning the display on and off again to see if it's some bug with the OS (again, unlikely but it's worth trying).
Please let me know if any of the oprions worked for you or made a difference, cheers.
@James160103 my old battery can't hold a charge, so I disposed of it. My new one has been fine for a few months without any problems. As far as a charger, I have a better charger then the stock, and a thick gauge nylon wrapped cord, that's been doing fine for the last 2-3 years.
The whole display issue isn't just on the OS, when I boot normal or into recovery it stays black, or flickers for a split second.
I did notice that if I hold it in front of my car vent, with full heat. Once its warm it seems to work, just until it cools off. I'm guessing its a hardware issue at this point, but I'll try to check the connection.
Thanks for your help
Facing this exact issue. It has gotten worse now.
