Not sure if its my unit or all S5 have this problem. Pictures come out blurry unless you put the phone on a tripod!
I have software image stabilizer On. Taking picture of the same scene from an iphone gives no blurr at all. Even tried with droid DNA and its fine as well. Anyone else having the same experience?
Did you remove the thin plastic film covering the camera?

Hmm i don't agree with that. If i sit here at my desk and take repeated frames of the same object (low light, indoors), only about 50% come out clear with IS off. I have a hard time not taking a clear picture with IS on which, obviously, is the point.
I think it's a software problem that will be fixed in future updates.

You have a LOT of motion blur in the S5 shot. And it doesn't seem to be that dark in the room. I can't that much motion blur on my S5 unless I deliberately shake it while taking the picture. If that shot is typical, then you may have a defective unit.

Not to pile on you or anything, but your lens appears to be smudged a bit. A macro shot should be far, far clearer than that, with any camera.
Try giving it a clean with a cloth.

I think there is a quality drop here
I remember someone pointed out a quality drop after root or the 23 firmware upgrade and I have just noticed the guy might be right.
the glasses pic was taken earlier before root on the 16 firmware.
the markers took just now after root with the 23 firmware.
the markers pic appears to have too much noise reduction and less details.

Is there a way to minimize it or it is hardware?

Indeed. Adjustable, though, through Photoshop in 1 second. Mainly can be seen on "Auto white balance" setting.
Here is one more. Focusing on red-orange gamma, whites in the background also get warm tones.

It's a purely hardware issue. To the extent that it can be minimized is based on software.
No amount of megapixels can make-up for the fact our all camera phone sensors are ridiculously small, and thus cannot capture sufficient light which creates the pink effect. =) It is also for this reason that you will not see this effect when the place is extremely bright (e.g., taking a picture outside on sunny day while under the sun and not in any shaded areas).
Once you know how to look for it, you'll know that this happens across platforms. Camera sensors just suck. Every photo I've seen from a camera phone that is not well lit has exhibited this effect.
You could always take pictures along the red-spectrum. It'll be camouflaged that way if it bothers you. *Shrugs* Or keep flash enabled all the time.
I'm loving this camera!

One of the main gripes I had with my Note 2 was the poor pictures it took. I looked at a lot of the reviews of the S4 and looked at all of the sample pictures on the web that the S4 took. I was thoroughly impressed by how good of quality pics it took and that is want got me hooked on getting it. After getting it I see it does take better pics but at the same time I don't get the quality I saw in the pics on the web.
I was wondering is there anything I can do to maximize the quality of my pictures so I get comparable quality that I saw in the review pictures?
Yeah I'm not sure. I always feel like this as well. Just make sure that you set Anti-Shake to on. That helps me, otherwise all my pics are blurry.
Check your camera and check to see if there's the clear plastic protective shipping film over. I was thinking the same thing about picture quality and found that. It almost looks like it should be there and is a little hard getting off.

Some people say the film makes their camera not focus. I took mine off for good measure
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
I took the film off the first second I got the phone so it's not that.
Try shooting pictures in Rich Tone (HDR). I've noticed consistently better quality pictures.
Ya I kind of noticed that as well but the only problem is whatever you're shooting has to be completely still in order for it to not turn out blurry.
Antishake on or hold your breath when taking pictures
The camera is only as good as the person's skills using it. Don't rely fully on the camera/software itself to do all the hard work for you.
The people who post reviews of these devices generally have decent photography skills and thus their "sample" pics turn out much better than the average user's.
Like stated, try to use HDR. Keep a steady hand by resting it on something or squating down low to the ground with a good steady poise. Play with the focus on different subjects to get the desired focal length as well.

Sadly, it's one of the biggest problems this camera has. The problem is more evident in scenes with a lot of white objects or backgrounds.
Take the attached image as an example (yep, I brought Starbucks into a bar, lol)
Thankfully this is something that will likely be fixed in a firmware update.
No offense the first pic you posted is absolutely terrible. The colors are muted out and the entire thing is red.

This is with a quick auto correct of some colors and look at the difference. And it still looks like it's got a bit of a red tint.

no issues with the tint... I can fix that in 2 clicks. my problem is the "dry brush filter" look. You can't get those pixels back.
Youre all making laugh, I guess a benefit to being color blind is I don't notice the purple hue:sly:

It's a phone that has a camera, I don't expect to shoot National Geographic on this thing, so for me the camera is just fine.
A trick that you can try to prevent some of the redness or out of balance colors (not the purple hue) is to cover the light sensor on the front off the phone with your finger and then find something white to aim at and rebalance the shot before taking the picture. The sensor is to the left of the earpiece. It seems to help a lot when taking pictures in rooms lit by yellower CFLs.

Regarding all of the complaints of the Moto X's camera, are (some or all of) these things fixable by software/firmware updates or is it in the hardware? Anyone know? Details would be nice. Thanks.

I think this is a pretty bad attitude. There are decent cameras in phones that cost just as much or less. There's no reason to make excuses, the camera can be bad, but don't write it off like it's not important or they couldn't include a decent sensor.
Anyone else notice how the front cam isn't so sharp at times? If I am not holding my phone from the same direction as the light source, the pics are kinda blurry. It's currently 10am where I am and the sun is shining bright yet this camera is producing low quality images while indoors like there isn't enough light though there is. It's as if the light needs to shine directly into the sensor to create sharper images. My Nexus 6p took way better pics in low and even no light. I will post pics from both devices for comparison. Anyone else care to post some as well?

Nah, I have a very nice microfiber cloth I cleaned it with several times before posting this. It's just a strange thing with the lighting. After doing research, it seems to be the exact same issue. I read where someone had taken their S7 to best buy and compared it with other display units or something like that. Their results were that another device had an okay camera and then another was bad just like theirs... Or something like that lol. Can't remember currently. Either way, this camera is butt ???
