Pretty sure you won't be able to get an OTA update on stock with a custom recovery installed.

I believe You will need to flash back to stock using a nexus 7 toolkit (wugfresh or skip softs) only way to get an official OTA update.
Also, how do you have 30gb of data in your device when only 26-27gb is usable??

Yes here it is the nexus s official android 4.0.4 from google
this needs to be flashed over the stock 4.0.3 official rom from google it's a 17.8 mb update not a full rom so you can only flash it over stock 4.0.3 i repeat only over stock or else it will fail.
i managed to get the download link from google servers here it is http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_crespo/hR7QFEtn.zip as you can see an official google link.
so far i noticed that the recovery is fixed (no longer disappear on i9023 devices)
and battery problems solved too.
ONLY FLASHABLE VIA CWM
the reason is here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24198556
Is it worth going back to stock 4.0.3 and update to 4.0.4?
I am rooted running Codename Android 1.5.5 and Air Kernel 3.7. Pretty happy with that set up. Very smooth and stable and decent battery life (20+ hrs).
I love the tweaks and mods included in CNA. Is it worth it not having them?

Hmm of course it does not have the tweak of custom roms, but if you want a stock experience this is way better than 4.0.3 lots of issue fixed,it's smoother now and battery issues all gone plus the recovery now works again on i9023 devices.
Getting a Status 7 error trying to apply this update to a stock unrooted GSM Nexus S. Hmm...
guys how i should istall it on my nexus s i9023 if i can't use my recovery? mmm i have 4.0.3 stock

if it's unlocked use fastboot to boot clockworkmod recovery and flash from there.

you must be completely stock,no stock kernel or modified system apps or files, you can try flashing the 4.0.3 rom, even if you are unrooted with a modified stock system it will not work.

I'm pretty sure that this is only an incremental upgrade and not a full rom so its not going to work if you wipe everything. Its under 20 megs so

I only wiped user datas, not system.
I've been trying to apply it without any wipe before with the same result.
I will maybe try to go back to 2.3.6 then apply only the 4.0.3 update from 2.3.6 (not the full package) and then the package provided but I have to go back home to unlock the phone and load cwm reocvery to revert back to 2.3.6.
OP can you tell us if you came from full 4.0.3 update on only the update from 2.3.6, if you got the update over the air or if you flashed it manualy and also if you are using stock recovery.
Thank you

you can access the stock recovery,it's just the backlight is very low so blind clicks are still possible,in direct sunlight at some angle you can see the menus (press power + vol up inside recovery for the menus to appear)
I'm having the error Status 7 too.
It seems that the complete rom package 4.0.3 is a little different than upgrading from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3. Now I'm downloading the 2.3.6 complete rom and upgrading from this.

Okay. Thanks!
Now we just have to see if coming from 2.3.6 and only using small update packages is the trick or if it's using cmw recovery that makes the update process working.
I'll try with stock recovery and A BIG TORCHLIGHT coming from 2.3.6 to find it out.
IMHO, I'd wait for source release of 4.0.5 (or 4.0.4), whatever is first.
what worked for me:
- full wipe (that means everything except sd-card)
- install 4.0.3 full-rom
- install 4.0.4 ota
since my bootloader is unlocked, i deleted the recovery-dir from both zips before flashing (i prefer cwm).
I've flashed the 4.0.3 OTA, after that this update too. Flashed superuser, currently restoring my apps with titanium, but no trouble so far. Data, wifi working, no FCs, report back later. (oh, and i have i9023)

No. No. No. You will lose root access after the update. You will have to re root. And which stock kernel do you want to flash back to? 4.2.1? Maybe I don't understand your question..
If you're saying when your device detects the update and you want to flash back to its factory stock kernel, then yes you can do that.

Cheers for the input
i was just curious of when the update comes to my nexus 7 that i will have to return to stock kernel so it updates with no issues because of running bricked kernel. I have also installed vodo root keeper (think its called not with my n7 at the moment) to help me keep root. Will i be able to flash the ota through cwm with verification signature turned of ? Or do i have to install stock to flash it

Ummm... the OTA process performs binary patching on individual files. If a file is not a target of the patching process, nothing happens to it. So that beggars the question of why you think that Superuser.apk/su (or SuperSU/su) would be targeted, as they are never distributed by Google. More to the point, neither of them exist in the boot image, so your assertion is flat out wrong.
Also, a sanity check (checksum) is performed on each and every one of those targeted files; if it should happen that there is an update to the kernel or ram disk, then the boot image will be checked, and IF you have installed a new kernel (or even have a trivially changed boot image), the check of the boot image will fail and the entire OTA will abort.
So, the OP's question was not only perfectly valid and reasonable, but exactly the correct procedure if the boot image gets patched by the OTA.
I'm planning on doing exactly what the OP suggested; but good Dog, I'm also going to do a full Nandroid backup before I begin. How wrong can things go if you have a backup to revert to? (In fact, I'm even going to put the stock recovery on the tab for the purpose of the OTA too - if you have an unlocked boot loader you can reflash or soft-boot any recovery you want, and do whatever you want thereafter.)
Even if you were to "lose root" you can certainly just over flash a minimal kit containing Superuser.apk/su. It's not a big deal.
Put down the toolkit and the hash pipe, and pick up the command line!
Hi
I had a Motorola Defy mb525.
Bricked the phone while trying to install CM9
Got it alive somehow by Flashing it with .sbf
Now my phone shows as mb526 and I was able to root it again.
System Version - 45.0.231.mb526.AsiaRetail.en.03
Version - 2.3.6
Kernel - 2.6.32.9-ge281b6e [email protected] #1
The problem now is I am not able to flash any of the Custom ROM's.
Tried CM10, Cm9 and also the latest kitkat
Downloaded different ones for each ROM's.
I get the message when i try to update from SDcard "Signature verification failed"
If someone could help me in Upgrading to JellyBean or Kitkat

Hi guys,long time lurker here.
I have recently tried to update my old Nexus 2012 to Kitkat, and messed it up!:crying:
I can only get into TWRP now, and only get roms on there via a USB OTG cable.
Thing is, i've tried loads of roms and they all seem to fail. I've obviously messed up somewhere, anyone give me any poiinters?
Cheers.
EDIT
Think I'm sorted - seems i can't update to Kitkat, I tried a 4.2 rom, and all is good.
Note to self - do more research before 'updating':silly:

For stock KitKat, use Nexus Root Toolkit and flash the stock binary, and enable USB debugging! Toolkit really takes over so it's kinda one click.
For a ROM? Update TWRP, CWM, or PhilZ to the latest version and pick a ROM that suits your fancy! Good luck on your journey!

You probably need to update your bootloader to the latest.
You could flash stock 4.2.2 with fastboot.... And when you reboot, it will give you the kit kat ota. Which will update your bootloader and leave you on 4.4.2. Then you just need to flash recovery and root again.

Hi, seymour71...
If you're running Googles official factory stock Android 4.2, then you can download the relevant OTA update(s) from here, directly to your Nexus 7, and flash in CWM or TWRP.
You can find out the specifics of the ROM build number your currently running by going to SETTINGS>>ABOUT TABLET>>BUILD NUMBER on your Nexus 7.
You may need to upgrade incrementally, that is to say, from 4.2 to 4.3 (and their successive point updates) right through to the latest version, Android 4.4.2 (Build number: KOT49H).
NOTE: OTA UPDATES ONLY WORK WITH OFFICIAL UNMODIFIED FACTORY STOCK... If you're running a Custom 4.2 based ROM, then flashing them will fail.
Good luck.

"BeatMod CrystalClear v2.3"... Never heard of that one before. There are some pretty obscure ROMs out there. This one sounds like it has some sort of 'music' orientation.
Anyhow... it's a Custom ROM... and you wont be able to update it to 4.4.2 unless the developer has released a 4.4.2 version.

Your best bet is to fastboot flash the official Google factory stock image for your specific Nexus 7(2012) model (WiFi only, or WiFi & 3G).
The Nexus 7(2012) factory image(s) can be found here...

But update.zip cannot be flashed and i get an error telling me: Package expects build fingerprint of google occam mako 5.0.1 or 5.1 user/release-keys. This device has occam/mako 4.3.
I dont want to flash 5.1 manually (i know how to do it).

This is because you are using a custom recovery. OTA update will never work if you are using a custom recovery. Meaning you have to be completely stock to receive the ota update.
I downloaded and flashed stock recovery. I ll try again.
