The SIII for U.S variants has the S4 DAC. I recorded a video in an indoor concert/club recently and the audio quality sucks! There is too much bass in the audio making it crack/distort beyond! Is there any type of way to reduce mic gain? Has anyone tried recording with the headset plugged in? I heard that reduces the bass level a bit...
Voodoo will come to the SIII, but I hope it will come to the U.S models since it doesn't have Wolfson.
Try the LGcamera app, it's got a video recording feature that allows you to decide which microphone(s) and bit rates you want to use. Experiment with it

Do I set the mic to microphone, default or camcorder? They all sound the same. Haven't tested in loud environment though...

Have you ever recorded audio in a loud club/concert which did NOT have clipping and distortion? If so, I'd love to know what device it was.
A bit off topic of your use case, but I've always been of the opinion that shows are loud to prevent piracy of the show, because being up front it's more than loud enough to damage your hearing.

I'm not too sure, try it in the different configs and see which sounds the best for you. I haven't tried it myself but heard it helps with the issue you brought up.

iPhone can handle loud environments without issue.
The Galaxy SII also had this same problem, there was either none, or very bad automatic gain control. All loud audio was recorded very distorted. I'd love to find a fix for this!

This is an Android problem, not a Samsung one. Basically the hardware drivers are extremely primitive. I am a musician and therefore look for audio apps all the time, and there just aren't any because Android's audio is just too primitive. There is NO way to adjust the gain down, only up. If you don't believe me, Google audio gain and Android and you'll find a lot of stuff. Latency is a also huge issue, and that's why apps like Songify don't exist.
I wanted to record my band practices with my phone too. It's impossible. I use an iPod touch with an I rig mike instead.
It's really a shame Google just doesn't care about audio, ICS fixed nothing.

So I've recently been using my tablet to play music onto my nice dj style headphones. But output volume and quality is absolutely horrendous. I have to be at full volume to get and reasonably level sound, and then when I'm at that level, everything is very distorted. On my one X which has some beats eq thing, sound is wonderful and much louder. Maybe this is just a problem with stock Android, but I need to find some way to get much higher quality and more importantly louder music. I've tried a few mods available here but they don't seem to do much.

What mods have you tried. I use awesome beats on my galaxy nexus. If not that trickster mod app has a setting to make the volume high. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I have my galaxy nexus stock and rooted.

I haven't used much except for DSP, but the audio is just difficult to have it loud. I've found external speakers BT or through audio jack is the only way to go.
Be careful what you try because I've read about people blowing their speaker trying to increase volume. That being said volume+ from the play store worked when it wasn't fighting the other sound mods I had installed. Pimp my ROM app. has some flashable zips that helped. Bottom line its one of the sacrifices that kept the price of the N7 low. Better the speaker to be mediocre rather than the screen. I bought some ear buds and if I want to play it loud for the neighbors I jack in to a stereo. Also a set of desktop computer speakers (sub and two bookshelf) work great with tablets
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I use my N7 speaker to listen to music and get quite surprised and how loud it gets and don't notice any distortion. So I'm not experiencing what you are. Maybe I'm just easily pleased and aren't as passionate about audio quality as others
Sorry to say this but, it will never sound good. Not even with sound mods. The sound chip inside the N7 is just really, really bad. I've tried it with a pair of $900 Shure headphones and nothing can save this thing.
Hi! I'm new in this forum and i don't know if this is the right section to post. I ask for a mod, an app, a whatever method to improve the quality of LG Nexus 4 videos. On wednesday i'll leave for a music festival where bass are so incredible and i need to record it. I've just tried some mods that i saw in this forum but the quality audio is so unlistenable. Does someone know a method to recording video in a live music session? please help me
I'd like this too, I tried recording a video in the car with the windows up and radio off, it was pretty quiet, and all I heard was horrible distortion, it was complete trash.

You can simply do a test on speakers if you put on high volume and put the phone near or in a car with high volume. Thanks anyways! I am looking now towards S4 or HTC One. So sad that I have to give N4 up.
As per gsmarena review audio(Music) is not loud enough. I know this, Samsung does the same to their phones. This is a big let down for me, won't hold back from buying this though.
Any suggestions on how i can improve the sound immediately after i buy this phone. Not sure what kind of dev support we may get for this phone.

The review stated the speaker. Other reviews have said the speaker is fine, and I haven't found a reviewer who hasn't thought it was fantastic with headphones. I believe he said it was a test unit and the software wasn't final, perhaps they will ramp up the volume.

May be you are right. One more week and we will have the device in AT&T stores (sep 13th). I will go test it and give an update in this thread.
i will maybe buy the G2 also and because it has S800 SoC i can ask someone who made the best soundmod or is still updating the best sound mod for hox and he is also making soundmods for his xperia z and the htc One ...so then i can ask which files to change for speaker output to see how far we can change but the speakers should be better WAY better then hox haha ...but i also hope to get his device...

There definitely are tweaks, the Nexus 4 loudspeaker was horrible until flashing kernels that fixed it.
a quick question guys ...
How is speaker / audio level and quality compared to galaxy Note 2 ?
Im going to get my G2 tomorrow and i want to make sure i got everything covered up
The speaker is pretty loud for me. Almost as loud as note 2.i think sound quality is better on g2.
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
The most frustrating bit is they cap the max volume at IEM levels to 'protect' your hearing. If you want to use it as a line out or drive circumaural cans, they don't get loud enough.
Dear LG, I don't need you to protect me from myself. Let me have the full amp range.
I actually happened to compare the speaker to a friend's note 2 the other day. the note 2 was louder sitting on the table, but i've found the way it works best is when i'm holding the phone and cupping the speaker towards me. it makes an incredible difference, but i'm not sure what that does to quality. in that case it's louder than the note 2.
I wonder if there is a way to turn off the settings where it auto lowers the volume when something is plugged into it. I have a speaker I use in the restroom when in the shower, and the volume output is much much lower than with my Gnex. Also, I use my AUX cord to plug into my car (because thats the only way to get it onto my speakers, and the one part that is annoying- is that I can't access the volume buttons easily with it in the car dock.
Hey everyone!
Before getting tens of people on me saying Poweramp is the best, can you guys check stock?
I tested during 3 days stock, poweramp and n7 and my results are surprising:
Best player: stock - crisp and clear sound and higher volume, buggy and annoying album cover art detection, love the vocal command when you are using hands-free.
Follow up: Poweramp - lower volume, much softer sound but clear, love the cover detection per song
N7 - kinda same sound like poweramp, nice design concept, very low resolution cover images (yes, I tried the high resolution cover option), same buggy cover art when all songs with no album tag gets one songs' cover
Can somebody compare stock and poweramp?
I used stock earpiece and some Panasonic headphones, maybe somebody habe better instruments than me. I played tens of 320kbps mp3 files and flac files.
I'm not a music fanatic, I'm happy with everything and super happy with the GT-I9505 Yamaha chip (making GT-I9500's owners not feeling superior), but I had few time for playing and I'm curious if somebody else gets this results.
It's weird and funny to feel that stock player is better than poweramp
Cheers.

Do you have direct sound turned on in PA? Settings/audio/advanced tweeks.
I also have my replay gain set at 7db (activated with clipping).
I also mainly use the preset "pop" on equalizer.
Almost forgot, I also have "tone" turned on with bass and trebble just over half way.
I ONLY use PA cause every other player sounds sh!t to me.

Hey mate,
Thanks for answering. I have Direct Volume Control enabled into Advanced tweaks.
I enabled the 7db thing and I always keep the preset on pop because most of time I'm listening pop on my phone. I tried to play a bit with the tone, but still, I'm getting better results with stock. Have you the direct volume enabled? It's expected to improve the quality, not decrease it I guess.

Poweramp is my personal favorite.
Crisp, clear sound. Sweet tweaks, and i love the File manager.
I sort my music by folders, and Poweramp truly has the best filemanager for this.

S2, S3 and S4 Octa have Wolfson chip, which is supposed to be better than S4 Qualcomm (Yamaha chip). I had S3 but I found no difference between S3 and S4. I think is just rumors and comparations made by fanboys. Between S2 and S4 no idea, what do you mean that is better S2, higher volume or what?
I honestly find no difference between media player and Poweramp

The S2 has better audio than the S4 ??!! I think you need to clean your ears out. The SQ on the I9100 was average at best (media players costing 1/10th of the price have better SQ than the S2). The I9505 blows it out of the water.
OP - I've used Poweramp on both phones (since I got my S2 two years ago), and it's easily the best music player in every possible way (Neutron is not too shabby as well, but uses more battery). Also, re: the Wolfson Vs Yamaha DAC's in the I9500/I9505, technically at least there isn't a massive amount of difference. And that's borne out by the experience of people who have listened to both side by side - there isn't a great deal of difference in the SQ.
JetAudio Plus.. Has everything like poweramp plus a better UI, can share now playing with Twitter or Facebook.. Great app

Hi! Im kinda late, i know... I did forget all about this thread.
In my subjective opinion i do feel the S2 (i9100) har crisper and more detailed sound (not sure how to say it in other words )
It may be some type of placebo, or i have a bad 9505. But i prefeer mye old S2 over the S4 anyday!
Got any clues on what else i could be?
