Every Rom goes Status 7. Can only boot to recovery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have an S4, Bell. I had installed CM11 via their application that you download, was pretty slick.
But then I wanted to try and unlock my phone, but don't get the service menu out of the dialer, so was trying to flash a vanilla rom.
It said status 7 abort. I thought no problem and went to just use the restore I had created and saved to the SD card. But it couldn't find the sd card, and when I put it in my computer it says it is corrupt and can not be read.
So I got a different sd card and put CM11 on it, status 7, so I put a nightly on, status 7. Tried the vanilla again, status 7. Tried the Pac rom, status 7. Tried the Chaos rom, status 7.
Downloaded philz recovery 6.15.4, and man that is a slick recovery, but again everything was status 7.
If I leave the phone to just reboot, it just goes into recovery.
Any ideas on how to fix? Seems like an odd issue to be having.
EDIT
Trying to install TWRP zip I get status 7 too.
EDIT 2
Ok I made a backup from another s4 and got it back working. But still can not flash anything without status 7, and can not get TWRP to install, even from the goo app, it says sytem error or something.
I really just want to be able to get into the service menu so I can unlock this phone.

Should I put this somewhere else maybe?

No, you are OK here just no one with a solution yet. I am at work and only scanned your post. Are you in a position to reformat your internal card. You said ext is now ok?
Can you Odin back to stock--never used Odin so not much help there
What recovery is working for you--Philz
After you flash a rom did you flash your carriers kernel?
Hopefully someone can get you sorted--:good:

I would definitely try to Odin back to stock. What firmware are you on? It'll make a difference if and what to flash to get back to stock.

Download the firmware for your device from sammobile.com. it's a zip file, use 7-zip to extract a .tar.md5 file. Use that file in Odin, PDA slot. Boot your device into download mode and connect it to your pc with Odin running. Odin should detect your device. Hit start

That site is down for updating. I tried looking on samsung-updates.com but there are a lot of different ones, and none of them look to be Canada.
Odin doesn't find the phone in download mode, although my computer does find the phone. Odin finds the phone if I boot it normally though.

And how come I can't unlock the phone from a custom rom?

Can not update Manually

I have tried to update manually but cant. I have downloaded the file from samsung, put on root of card as update.zip and tried to install from clockwork. Is this the wrong way to do it.
I am on all stock and have clockwork installed. I downloaded from the link that has been provided from samsung It says E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
Firmware version-2.1-update1
Build Number-SPH-D700 ECLAIR.DI18
So is there something I am doing wrong?
If you're using clockwork, you aren't on stock. Last resort is to use the flash utility that Samsung provided. It completely wipes your phone (not your sd card).

Is there a way to remove clockwork besides going back to stock? Also since I do have clockwork installed, will I not get the ota update to work correctly?
I can tell you what I know.
1) The official OTA update does not work with non-stock roms. In your case, your rom became non-stock once you installed CWR.
2) The flash utility provided by samsung will take any epic and clear it of user data and the existing rom and then flashes the 2.2.1 official rom. Your SD card will be untouched, at least mine was.
3) You can always re-root after you've flashed the official release. Do a search in this forum and you can find threads that explain how.
Good luck sir.
Just go get the cwm flashable pre-rooted eb13 rom that dameon87 posted in the dev section. There's also a link to it in the wiki.

That one did not work. Do I need to try to get the one that is not signed. I dowloaded the signed one and it did not work. After the install it tried to boot up, but went to the samsung screen and then into the official factory restore mode and tried to reboot and stuck on samsung screen.
Use the unsigned one. The only difference betwen the flashable and the one from samsung is the flashable is deodexed.

I can't get the manual to work - mine is rooted and rommed, but my husband's is stock.
I have downloaded direct from Samsung 3 times. Once loaded on computer and opened, the Eula doesn't even have the Next button which is needed to proceed.
So strange, guess he will wait for the OTA and drain his battery at an inconvenient time!!

If you are using odin try this.
Start odin on your PC first and have it up.
Put phone into download mode
Plug in your phone via usb and see if that helps.
It already sounds like you have the samsung drivers installed, but check to make sure.

When it isn't in download mode i can connect to the computer, both computers just fine. It will tell me what phone I have and all. I just don't get it. Maybe I will just delete driver and install again. Is it a phone problem?

I have used a different version of odin with no issues at all. I have never used this one before.

Cannot setup phone (unfortunately, setting has stopped).

Hello, today i wanted to flash a new rom on my galaxy s4, rooted it a while ago but hadn't flashed a rom. Went to Rom Manager and was gonna do a backup but it was giving me an error so I could not do the backup. Since I had saved all my pictures and everything on dropbox I just went ahead and went to recovery mode and wiped my data so I could flash the new rom. When I tried to wipe the cache partition it just rebooted my phone. When the phone started up I get all the usual setup from TouchWiz. I started setting it all up as usual but when I get to the final screen (learn about key features) I hit finish and then i get the "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." not allowing me to continue on to my home screen. So as of right now my phone is basically a paper weight because I can not to anything. Has anyone else encountered this ? Is there a work around ? Will appreciate all help.
P.s. Sorry if there is already a post about this, I just don't frequent this page very often and don't quite understand how all the search functions and all that work.

First off what firmware are you on. MDL, mf3, mj6, mj9? To check go to settings - more - about device and check build number. If it is mf3 than you need to go to the general section and read how to odin the md5 file same as other build numbers. You just have to take your time and read.

Check to see if there are any popups that you have to allow before a connection can be made. Sometimes they appear behind the ODIN screen (on the PC). Also, make sure you have the proper drivers installed.
If you can get to clockwork, just copy a new rom to your SD card and flash it. You'll be up and running in 5 minutes.

Start it up. You'll see a PDA slot where you can browse for a file. Browse to where the.tar.md5 file you downloaded is. Then boot your phone into download mode and plug the usb cable into it. Odin should have a com in the upper left hand corner turn yellow or blue, it depends on the Odin version you're using. Once you see that your phone is being recognized by Odin and you can hit start. If everything goes right it should take about 10 minutes for it to do its thing. If it's successful boot into recovery and do a factory reset

I don't want to steal your thunder JD. Sketchy do you live near a BestBuy? If so some have a Samsung Experience Shop which they can do that for you if you are unsure how to use Odin. Tell them Kies broke your phone and ask them to reflash it. Its free. Try not to show them the custom logo.

-put it into ur sd card
-install root explorer manually by other sources(only works if ur phone is rooted)
-then move play store.apk to system/app
-long press it and and tap change permissions
-check all boxes of read in vertical
-and one of write infront of owner
-restart ur device after it
i hope i helped u
This is latest Google Play apk. Of course you already need the apps on phone to install ie APK Installer or as mentioned Root Explorer or equivalent--:good:

I don't know if you need other Google stuff on phone for this to work, which you may have deleted. So, I don't guarantee--md5 has been verified though--

Hi,
The device is rooted by default.
Still waiting for custom rom. Seems it will take a time.
Can anyone please provide me with a backup of a stock recovery image to cs918 plus? I have replaced the original one with TWRP and now I cannot update the device with new firmware because I cannot find the stock recovery anywhere.
You can easy make a backup copy of stock recovery with Flashify app then put it into the internet and give me a link so I can download it and flash it into my CS918 plus.
Thanks in advance guys!
Please help
I can't upgrade my firmware either cuz I can't even figure out how to get into recovery, I'll get you a copy of stock recovery when I am home tomorrow.

To flash a new firmware use that instruction:
To get a new firmware type in google: "csrk3288p 20150609", enter the link location and download the file from the web site.
(Unfortunately I cannot put the exact link because I am a new user)
Then put the unpacked downloaded file into the main directory of your external sd card (/mnt/external_sd/) and change the file name from t031_8723bs_CSQ_splaire_20150609.img on update.img.
Then turn on the device but first hold down the button at the bottom of device and keep holding it until you willl get into recovery or install the "Reboot recovery" app.
Then you can choose "data/factory reset" but you don't have to - be careful that will erase all your apps and data installed but will not erase your external sd card.
Then choose "update rkimage from external storage" to flash new firmware.
PS. To navigate in recovery I'm using external keyboard connected to one of USB ports.
If you will have any troubles just ask.
I would be grateful for the stock recovery image for CS918 PLUS device.
Does anyone know if there even is a Source drop for this device ? What methods are used to flash a new rom/firmware ?
I don't have the device but can look at the code.

I don't have the firmware of cs918 plus, but I know how to flash the firmware. I think the procedure is same with cs918 and all rockchip based android tv box.
Using the RKBatch Tool to flash the firmware.
1. Connect to your computer with micro usb cable when device is off
2. Hold reset and power on
3. If one of connected device turn green, browse to the firmware (*.img)
4. Press "Restore" button and wait. Remember "Restore" button, not "Upgrade"

Can't you pull the recovery from the firmware update IMG? I figured out how to update firmware from SD card but used a app called reboot to get into recovery because there's no button on the bottom of my device. That firmware from 0609 called splaire is horrible as is the 2nd newest firmware. I with I had never updated mine it was better before...
I just spent an hour trying to get the recovery for u using flashify, it says it backed it up to SD card but its nowhere to be found on it, it says it backed up to dropbox but the folder it created on Dropbox is empty... Any other way to backup the recovery for u?

Edit: finally got rkbatch to recognise the unit, fixed now.
Glad to help. My unit is completely bricked now it seems. I upgraded to the June 29 firmware and a lot of functions on the remote stopped working so I wanted to downgrade so I tried to reboot to recovery but root was lost with this update.... So I tried the rkbatch method but I could never get the green connected to show up. I gave up after half an hour and plugged it into my TV now I have no signal I can't even get anything to show up on my TV...super stressed out now...
