Help with kit kat update - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so I purchased a note 3 recently from a friend and I am at the dreaded 27% install issue people are having for kitkat.
The phone does say custom upon starting with the open pad lock, upon checking a root checker app it seems the phone is not rooted.
I is a att phone, does this means it is unlocked? it also says under version 4.3 so i dont think its a custom rom?
My main question is, if I take this phone to bestbuy to a samsung hub will they update it for me to kitkat even with the padlock open on my startup screen?
Please keep in mind im totally new to android so any help will be appreciated! thank you!
really would just like to get the update hassle free!

[Q] Some questions about rooting

Hello guys, I have some questions I am hoping you experienced people can answer for me.
After doing a bunch of research, I am left a bit confused since a lot of the posts are older, and things have changed over the last few months, especially with locked bootloaders and such.
My current phone is:
-Samsung S4 (Fido based) SGH-i337M
-Android Version 4.3
-Baseband Version i337MVLUEMK6
I only want to ROOT the phone, so I can remove a bunch of excess Samsung bloatware that I never use, I am not really interested in custom ROM's at this time.
1. What is a Custom Recovery exactly?
I keep reading about Custom Recoveries but I don't really know what they are exactly... . Is this just a Firmware mirror that I can go back to at any time AFTER I root the device? Do I need to root the device to CREATE the Custom Recovery?
2. CAN I go back to "Stock" easily? Can I just find the original 4.3 Samsung FW and load it up?
3. I know that moving to 4.4 will require another Root when it becomes available later this month from Samsung, however can I go to the Default Android 4.4 ROM at this time, skipping all the Samsung Stuff?
4. I see a programmed called KINGO offering to root my phone for me, but then somebody said something about there not being a Custom Recovery available for it, which goes up to my original question. Can I not just revert back to unrooted status after?
Thanks to anybody who can help me with these noobish questions, I appreciate it.
I don't have your model so don't want to guess at rooting.
But:
Do not remove Bloatware after rooted. Get Titanium BackuP from the Market. The paid version (support devs) and just freeze the apps until you know they have no negative impact after freezing.
Do a Nandroid ASAP and put a copy on PC also.
Read this on your Recovery question:
http://freedupthoughts.com/2013/04/what-is-custom-recovery-why-should-i.html
You have an unlocked bootloader with the i337m
Someone else can address correct rooting for your specific device and get the correct recovery for it. I prefer TWRP.

at&t blocks me from custom recovery

HI Everybody,
Ok so my problem is that I can't access my custom recovery on my s4 SGH-I337.
My s4 is running android 4.2.2. It has root access and the bootloader is unlocked. I installed clockwork mod recovery touch 6.0.4.7 jflteatt using the app Rashr. When I try booting into clockwork I get blocked. It says "system software not authorized by at&t has been found on your phone." And then tells me to turn off my phone and go to the nearest at&t store. Also at the top left corner it has : ( Secure Failed:Kernel ) in red.
Sorry if there's a thread already about this but I couldn't find anything using the search engine. Thanks
There has never been a boot loader unlock for the sgh-i337. There was only a workaround - Loki. That too worked only for the MDB/MDL firmware. If you have MF3 or newer, boot loader is locked. So, no custom recovery and kernel. The only working recovery is safestrap.
Hi jmjoyas,
Thanks for replying! After reading your reply I finally understand what's up with at&t's s4. (I official dislike at&t even though their service is dependable) I was really looking forward towards cyanogenmod :crying:! But I still have some hope that my bootloader is unlock. This get's really complicated but when I first got my s4 it was came pre rooted and I believe it was refurbished in Asia. Weird right, but my phone dealer was chinese so who knows. Anyway so when I had Rashr boot into recovery I came across a loading screen with a samsung in print and under it was the word custom and under that work was a picture of a lock unlock! I believe that lock sign is the bootloader based on my rooting experience on my mom's galaxy nexus. I have a picture of that loading screen, but I can't upload it! Is there another way to show it?

As far as I know bootloader is locked for all AT&T S4 firmwares. So far we have a bootloader exploit call "Loki" only for the MDB/MDL firmware. There is no bootloader exploit for MF3, MK2, NB1, NC1 firmwares out yet.
You would see the "custom" word and unlock lock in every rooted AT&T S4. It has nothing to do with bootloader lock or unlock. If you unrooted (uninstall the superuser) your phone that symbol would go away.
Could you please tell us your phone firmware (baseband, build number, etc.) so that we can help you more.
Study up by reading thru General threads. Several to get you up to speed on upgrading and SafeStrap. There is one GPE rom that will run on your phone. AOSP based. It is General alos. But, read that thread carefully. There are very specific flashing/upgrading instructions and some bugs. I would probably get familiar with TW roms on SafeStrap first--:good:
Hi sway and rugmankc,
Thanks for giving me a better insight on my situation. Sway you're correct. When I boot into recovery after I un installed super su that loading screen was gone. Case solved! And rugmankc I'll look into general alos. Thanks guys for all your help including jmjoyas!:fingers-crossed: Thanks again!
And I forgot to answer your question sway. I have MF3 . Hopefully there's will be a bootloader exploit but until then I'll keep my fingers crossed:fingers-crossed:!

I don't need SafeStrap, so not up on it. I believe process would be upgrade to NC1, root with Towelroot, and use SafeStrap. But, check all that out before doing. May be steps in between. Make backups before and after as best you can.

[Q] Unlocked ATT // Unable to Update from 4.2.2 to Current Version

Phone: Samsung S4 I337
Firmware: MDL
Hey guys, first post. A friend of mine referred me to XDA Dev.
I unlocked my phone via one of those "unlock websites" a while back, and just followed whatever directions they gave me. Now my phone works overseas
However I would like to update my phone from 4.2.2 to the current version 4.4.2 (if I'm not mistaken). When i try to do the OTA update, it downloads, and tries to install, but never completes the update and reverts back to 4.2.2. I assume its due to the fact that the phone is unlocked.
Did a few searches, and found a few threads that I feel may be useful, but I don't know where to start.
First question, if I return my S4 to an original firmware, will the phone lose the "unlocked" ability?
Second Question. Where do i even start? It's been a while since i've tried to 'mod' any device, so my problem is the lingo. Just even a laundry list of things I should do would be helpful, and the rest I can google/search my way through. Just need help with the terminology.
Third question, Are there mac friendly programs? or is it all strictly windows/linux
These are the three threads I found.

DO NOT update your firmware!!!

Unless you want to be stuck with only the ability to use safestrap recovery and roms. Once you update your firmware your bootloader will be locked, permanently! Do yourself a favor and read up as much as you can on this phone and block the OTA update. Be happy it hasn't let you do it successfully. Start in the general section of this forum and read, re-read and read some more.
ok. i'll take your advice on that one.
The real reason i really wanted to update, is so i could make advantage of the SD card slot. because my memory is filling up quickly. What are suggestions that you have?
or should i just seek for another Android phone?

Why do you need to update for that? As far as I know no update has really changed much about SD speed or capacity limit.
If you want to update and keep your bootloader, you can just flash any newer ROM. There's plenty based on stock or near to stock. If you go 4.4, you'll need to flash a modem from 4.4 from the thread in the general section.

Quick help with new S5

Ok, I've been running a Note 2 for a VERY long time since released. ROMing, rooting, etc was super simple and did it often. However, its been a year or more since I've had to do anything. Now with my new phone it seems there are a lot of new hoops to jump through. I already got the AT&T has detected something yada yada you're screwed yada yada and had to flash back stock firmware with Odin.
So I have rooted with towelroot. I've tried installing the TWRP via their app which caused the first soft AT&T brick.
I don't care about warranty, timer fuse, flash ticker etc etc. I bought the S5 new but second hand. I hate asking to be spoon fed how or where to look but I'm at my wits end. Don't even have to say anything just provide some links. I havent been on a stock android in years and this is killing me.
I've read something about needing Loki to bypass bootloader but saw it's for S4 and not sure what to do with it.
I have the US version of the Galaxy S5 running 4.4.2 Model 900A. I see CWM and TWRP links I've found say they can't do to bootloader lock so not sure where to go.
Thanks ahead of time!
Ok, waiting on my SD card to get here in the morning to use safestrap. What actual roms can I use? I see only things using stock kernel but can CM or other non basic stock roms?
Can I flash this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-resurrection-remix-5-3-4-t3033255
I'm on A01 bootloader and have flashfire etc via this thread. Running G900A_OF3_Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aof2-5-0-keeproot-t3149146

Worth it to not upgrade and root or stay stock with G950U?

I own a G950U and have been holding out updating dealing with the annoying system upgrade notifications since i'm still on bootloader rev.2. My question is, is it even worth the trouble of rooting and flasing the one or two roms that are avaiable for this model or should i just update and stay stock (as there doesn't seem to be much in the rom development area of samsung devices going forward)?
Im stuck at the same point. I kinda wished i never rooted my phone, and I somewhat messed up and got stuck in a bootloop. Long story short i fixed it and am running this root by PartyCyborg and I like it alot. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-partcyborgrom-aqi6-deodexed-t3702988 theres the link and its the newest one not previous versions. If your going to run a Root this is what I would do.
yea I run stock rooted And i debate wether to upgrade so my sim unlocking software can unlock mine or stay root And so far I have stayed rooted
Yea...It seems to be a matter of opinion if your a legacy rom/root installer or up-to-date current tech type...I belong to the latter so I assume i'd be happier with this option, I've checked out this rom and attempted install one time, but quickly reverted due to time constrictions, but now that i have the time am trying to decide (because it doesn't always go right on the 1st try, lol) Thanks for the input guys!
btw, which carrier do you use? I have Verizon and was wondering about the hotspot issues i've read about.
