Nexus 7 Car Dash - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody!
I know you guys have probably read something like this hundreds of times but I don't know where else to ask,
I have an 2008 Ford Fusion and I want to install a Nexus 7 as a Dash.
The problem is I don't know where to start!
I need it to cost as little as possible.
I need it for Navigation.
I need it for music playback.
I need it to turn on/off when the car starts/turns off.
I would love for me to control it with the steering wheel.
What parts do I need and how do I wire it with the nexus?
Also 2012 vs 2013 model for a car dash?
I would really appreciate any help!

Bumping this, I'm looking to do the same on my 2002 Lexus IS300. Biggest question is how to hook up the Nexus 7 to car stereo.

If your stereo has a line in at the back then use the 3.5 mm jack on the Nexus

Nope. It doesn't have it. My car has an aux port but it doesn't work

Best android speaker dock? usb audio out

Hey guys i was wondering whats the best speaker dock for Android? i'd like to charge my phone and listen to music at the same time i don't think my nexus 4 supports usb audio out yet, i was thinking about getting the philips fidelio as14037
The JBL power up would be nice but it is out of my price range, any other suggestions?
My plan is to use my existing PC speakers. Get my computer to turn when my phone connects to the WiFi, connect to Bluetooth on my PC and use a wireless charger. no need for any cables.

Gear4 was supposed to release an Android app-controlled clock radio during Q3 but it never materialized. It would be the first speaker dock to take advantage of USB audio.

In using an old ihome that was once used before my iPod touch crapped out. I bought a 30 pin Bluetooth adapter from target for like 20 bucks and just stream while my phone is plugged in.

I'm using the iLuv MobiDock speaker. It secures the phone in any position whether you have put it in the landscape. The performance and clarity of the sound are awesome. But the only thing I don't like is this docking station speaker is too costly.

I use my N7 with Samsung handsfree, you can try them (I got them from my Samsung GSII). They work very well.

How to connect nexus 4 on a car stereo using USB cable ?Is there any setting to be do

Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I believe you can thru Bluetooth or an aux jack.

Not unless the car stereo supports MTP. Most only support USB mass storage which is deprecated on many Android devices now.
A2DP or headphone jack work fine.

So there is no setting inside the andriod to make it compactable with the USB cable? Or is there a work around to make it possible without a aux or Bluetooth ?
Not possible at all. I work at a car stereo shop and not a single one I have tried works. Only solution is auxilary or Bluetooth if you want to spend the extra money... Definitely worth it if you ask me though

Ok thanks for that insight. Just want to clear one more thing on it. Is there any tweaks out there for rooted devices that would make this possible?

Does the aux deliver a better sound experience compared to Bluetooth?

As far as i know there is not... USB is a pain in the ass with android and car stereos anyways. It reads the entire SD card directory and makes it a pain in the ass to navigate through your music. Go for Bluetooth man

Bluetooth quality is purer because straight data.

This actually really dissapointed me, as it was one of my favourite use-cases for my phone, not having to maintain two (or more) seperate music collections - prevents the phenomenon of heading off on a planned highly enjoyable car trip with my current favourite music, only to find that I didn't move it onto the appropriate USB device.
My last phone was an HTC Sensation running a 4.1 JB ROM, I forget which exactly, it got changed a lot . Something minimal. Anyway...
I tried using the headphone jack out, into my car stereo aux in, and even when I upped the input source level in the stereo hardware, and cranked up the volume on the Nex4, it only got to about 60% of the volume I wanted. Bah. The Bluetooth adapter for the stereo is like $200 if it's even available anymore. Very lame.
I could get a headphone amp. Actually, that's probably the easiest thing to do for me. Off I go to the web store.
Ramble over. Oh, first post here. Hi y'all. (software dev)
Thanks for the much needed insight into this issue now. Right now I have to look for Bluetooth adapter. And I hope Google will fill this gap of charging and using the music player with the same single USB cable it would be a good thing to have too.
Hi all hope you all having a fantastic day with nexus 4

Bluetooth is convenient as there is no wire, but folks claiming Bluetooth has better audio quality than line out are incorrect (sorry). You will have much better audio quality with the line out, assuming your head unit's aux input has enough gain to get to levels you normally listen to.

Yea I was wondering about that for a while. Plus Bluetooth kills the battery faster.

My Sony WX-GT80UI says that it accepts MTP.. But when my Nexus 4 is connected, it says device not compatible. How is this? Do I need to have music files on root of card or what else could make a difference?

I have a pretty old stereo in my car and it doesn't have aux or Bluetooth..so there's no way I can listen to my music while in the car..except if I manage to transmit my phone's audio at some FM frequency..this was possible on some mold Nokia devices like the N95 ...but is it possible on the mako? No, you'd need an external FM transmitter. They're pretty cheap, around $10.
EBay has them for a few bucks with free shipping, if you're willing to wait a bit: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.ca/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=370788932892
