Hi everyone, I've recently rooted and unlocked my tablet and tried different custom rom (Omnirom 6 BeanStalk which is my current daily driver and I find it increbible).
The only thing I found not working is OTG (Usb host) as it doesn't read any kind of usb drives, mouse, keyboard, etc even if it recognizes a usb device connected.
I even tried third party apps but no luck.
Is it me or there's a problem with OTG? Are there any workaround for this??
Thank you all
The only solution for me was to install and use "OTG helper" from Google Play..I'm on Beanstalk too, but the problem was the same on Omni (and I experienced the same solution)

I've tried the same app but it doesn't work for me , do you know if there's a custom rom with OTG built in?
Another question, I didn't try but is HDMI output working in custom roms??
Thank you!

It seems like all kitkat based custom roms have this problem with otg..Anyway, your problem is strange, I'll give to you an example: if you want to allow the tab to see an USB flash drive, have you tried to open a file manager and have you browsed the storage folder, after running otg helper? It should appear a new folder, close to the ones you had before, referred to the USB flash drive..talking about HDMI, I have no problems on my tab, it runs as it should

I installed otg helper, opened ES File Explorer, went to storage but there was only internal storage and external sd, no usb disk like I see on my i9300.
Tried many times but no luck, if I go to Settings --> Memory there's no other drive connected.
As soon as I come back home I want to try again, is this the app you're talking about? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=it
Thanks, I'm going to try also HDMI (just in case...)
Thank you
PS: OTG Helper started correctly when I plug in usb even if it's not recognized!
Yes, this is the right app..so, did you run the app, being sure it has been granted with su permissions, and did you used the app to mount the USB storage, opening the file explorer only after that? It's not useful to simply run the app without asking it to mount the drive

Hi, excuse me for my late answer, but I have been really busy! Here you have some screenshot from my tab:
1) Storage folder before mounting a pendrive with USB otg helper
2) USB otg helper log after connecting my pendrive and tapping "mount":
3) Storage folder after mounting the pendrive:
As you can see, there is a new folder, open it and you should find the pendrive..if not, I really don't understand why it doesn't work..

[This is for those wanting to use Kopfgeldjaeger's SGS3 Easy UMS USB mass storage app with CF-Root. Please note that this is ONE of the options to install Busybox. Other (simpler) options DO exist but, this one worked for me where others failed]
I am new to the S3 and this may not be all that insightful to the pros out there but hopefully this will help the noobs.
I have had my s3 for a week now and I decided to root it using CF-Root. However, as you may know CF-Root does not install Busybox (needed for this useful UMS Mode App - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009). So, after much trial and error, I found the solution I needed.
Busybox can be installed using the S3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488). However, busybox doesn't work if you just have CF-Root and install it from the S3 Toolkit or the Stericson Busybox installer app without an insecure kernel/adbd patch.
Chainfire, has provided a solution through an app called adbd Insecure.
So, here is what you you need:
1. Root using CF-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238).
2. adbd Insecure v1.0 app (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687590)
3. S3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488)
Procedure:
1. Root your S3 using CF-Root method
2. Install adbd Insecure from Google Market (or XDA)
3. Run the app and select "Enable insecure adbd" AND "Enable at boot"
4.Restart S3
5.Connect to S3 to PC using usb cable
6.Open S3 Toolkit (I assume it is installed already with drivers etc.)
7.Select option 14 (Install Busybox on Phone) and answer "yes" to both questions that follow
8. Busybox will install.
9 Check that it works by downloading the UMS Mode App - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009 - and running the app with your phone connected to the PC. (If you get any funny messages then the procedure has not worked for some reason.)
Hope this helps.
:good:Support the Developers in whatever way possible by donating or buying one or more their apps from Google Play.:good:
or alternatively.....
1. have root
2. Open Play Store
3. Download "busybox " - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDYsInN0ZXJpY3Nvbi5idXN5Ym94Il0.
4. click install
You can try that. Didn't work for me though.

I think you will find that there were some versions which were compact versions of BB, and hence short on binaries, therefore it may be that the version installed from market doesn't work with the ums app as it is quite recent.
There is an interesting bit about it in the OP of the supercharger script thread

Thanks for the insight Slaphead20. That helps me understand why other Busybox installs did not work for me despite several clean firmware installs to try out various options.

I had a look at the v6 thread and ironically he recommends the Sterrickson app if you have BB problems so that alley seems a blind one!
Well, whatever the case this is ONE option for people to try should they have trouble like I have had. I have been using (and abusing) my Android phones (previously an X10 which still works nicely for what it is) for well over 2 years now and I have used Stericson with success before. But, for whatever reason, Stericson did not work for me here. So, here is just one solution to get busybox onto your S3 that works with the Easy UMS application.

Ok, i tried almost every USB device that I have, but without success :/... But if I look in your attached txt file, I see there this: "build.display: DMod based on BenzROM v4", I really don't understand what about the file is, but I thing, that this mean that you are using some moded ROM, not stock rom, right? So I thing that there should be some mod/tweaks in this moded ROM which enables for you OTG

Very interesting information.
Looks like the phone does not provide any power when OTG cable connected.
Theoretically, it is possible to create small app that will give power to USB (phone will work as charger)

I ran through the logcat dump and it seems like the usb host manager is what we should check. As I can see, it's disabled by default, and only activated when the device is connected to a power source.
When disconnected, that small gap, when the phone still thinks it's charging let's the host manager do its job. At least that's what I think is happening.
Unfortunately, I don't know this much about android. My best bet would be to somehow start the manager when needed, but again, don't know if it's that simple or even possible.
Ok, so we know that OTG is only disabled by the kernel (but phone can provide power to usb device, so full OTG support is possible by hardware). It seems that we can simply enable it.
Has anyone try it using dmod v1 or bln kernel??
Maybe bln kernel can support otg

The BQ24152 (see my Mega drive and documents->chips) charger has the ability to drive the VBUS at 200ma/5V. If anyone wants to implement it into their kernel, contact me.
I tested it with USB flash drive, which worked great, and with external USB hub I managed to host a portable hard drive aswell, although NTFS is not built into the kernel (it needs external applications).

I tested it with USB flash drive, which worked great, and with external USB hub I managed to host a portable hard drive aswell, although NTFS is not built into the kernel (it needs external applications).
See my G+ post on how I achieved it: https://plus.google.com/113185712457131659867/posts/jkLQXbvhNSd

Which external app are you using to work with NTFS file system?
I’m using regularly the Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ to read my external sdcard with 64GB capacity and it works well.

Yes, but someone would have to add my patches and compile it on the 3.0.8 or whatever other kernel roms are using. It would be like a custom kernel.

As @Viper The Ripper said, It's for GT-S5830 and not GT-S5830i
Its for Cooper and not Cooperve. The reason being that Cooperve doesn't have proper sources because of non snapdragon CPU
Well, it won't install regardless of recovery (5.0.2.6 or the new ones 6.0 and higher). Anybody else facing the same problem?

Not yet. Though it is a 5 minute work, I am not having my PC at the moment. And can't use mobile data. Will post it within 1 day, hopefully
