[Q] i9505 4.3-4.4.2 stock rotation problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I'm experiencing the weirdest problem.
Yesterday I got myself a Galaxy S4 9505, everything was working fine, it was on 4.3. During the day, I've installed a few apps (including a barometer one) and rooted it and suddenly, the screen auto-rotation doesn't work. I've no idea what happened, since I didn't run any debloater or anything like that. I've decided to factory reset a few times, but it didn't solve it. I flashed the 4.4.2 from France on it and still nothing. I've ran the Sensor Test from the Play Store and it says that the accelerometer reports both X and Y fine, however Z stays at 0 for some reason.
Could anyone help me out, please? I'm pretty stressed out.
Oh and also, I have the libgnustl_shared.so lib in system/libs and it has rw-r--r--
Also the icons rotate in the camera app and steering works perfectly in Asphalt 8, but even Ultimate Rotation Control from the play store doesn't fix it.
Thank you

doing it right now, installed the Google Play edition 4.4.2, no luck in that one either. I've noticed that the test menu reports the accelerometer's Z axis as 37600-something, that's not normal, is it? X and Y work fine. If that's the culprit, it's a broken accelerometer?

tried everything, but nothing seems to work, any ideas on where I could buy a replacement accelerometer?

Can you return to samsung service center under warranty and ask them to fix it for you. Or did you trip your knox?

dial *#7353# and test the sensor
or install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.androidsensorbox and post the pic

Knox'd sadly. Samsung service wants 300 bucks to replace the whole mobo so it's a no go.
Magnetometer works fine (maxes out when I approach a speaker). Orientation seems to be working fine, at least the bubbles in the Spirit Level move as they should. Yet no auto-rotate. The accelerometer is weird, because the ball rolls around as it should, but the Z value is stuck

also, thanks for trying to help me out!
also, the accelerometer test from *#7353# works perfectly

[Q] How to calibrate the accelerometer?

Playing around with Android Sensor Box I noticed that the accelerometer on my device needs calibration. Right now, laid on a flat horizontal surface, it looks like it's tilted a little to the left. The problem is I can't find the option to calibrate on Jelly Bean. On my old Gingerbread phone I could do it from Settings > Display > Horizontal calibration.
Is there any way to do a system-wide calibration of the accelerometer?
OK for anyone having this problem: I turned the tablet off, laid it horizontally and turned it on again, which seems to recalibrate the accelerometer. Rather inconvenient, but it works.
Try the sensor tester app from the play store.

well, it seems that this also does works only sometimes - at first it solved my problem, but after few days and reboots (there was also a ROM change involved), it stopped working for me (well, the calibration seems to works well, but other apps sees only miscalibrated results now... Looks like I will have to have my Nexus replaced (which I realy hate) :crying:

For what it's worth, I've always been on stock Jelly Bean. When I first had issues with the accelerometer, powering off/on to recalibrate worked for me on 4.1.2, and I haven't had issues since, even after upgrading to 4.2 and doing a factory reset. Maybe you could give the latest stock ROM a try before replacing your Nexus 7.

[Q] Sensors no longer functioning

Hey guys,
This is my first Samsung after multiple HTCs, so this has really annoyed me... I preordered from Orange back in April, so I've had it since release. Everything was fine, though the battery life was far from perfect.
In the last week, maybe two, I noticed that the screen wasn't turning properly. Then it was stuck on the right side, whenever I turned on Screen Rotation. After 4 restarts, it just does nothing. I tried wiping and starting again, but to no avail...
I've also been into the *#0*# menu and under Sensors, the Accelerometer, Gyroscope and Magnetic selftests all fail. I thankfully don't play any games that require them, but taking photos is stuck to landscape and I can't view them in landscape on my phone...
Any theories?
same problem here mate!
Rooted, installed CWM recovery, fooled around with some Google Edition Roms and now I`m on the same problem.
Out of the blue, the sensor stoped working!
Flashed my original ROM with Odin and that didn`t work.
And background of the recovery (now original) the android has a red triangle and he is lying flat.
Everything else is working...
Someone plz help!
I'm sorry about how this sounds, but I'm glad it's not just me!
I didn't try rooting yet, so it's not related to that. I'm going to call Samsung (no web support...) Tomorrow if I get a chance.
Had yours overheated a few times beforehand? I'm wondering if the sensors are ruined by the heat...
Not sure if it is the heat...
My GS3 was always hot when using! And everything was fine for more than a year.
Your light sensor is working?
Mine is not working either.
To be more precise:
Accelerometer, Proximity, Barometer, Light, Gyroscope, Magnetic, Gesture and Temp-Humid
all of the Sensors of the *#0*# test
=/
Nope, light sensor doesn't recognise when I'm in a call and put it to my ear, or remove it... It senses nothing.
Today I unstalled the 3D Image live wallpaper app (since it uses the Gyroscope) and restarted the the phone, every sensor was up and running again.
So I installed the 3D Image live wallpaper again and after a while the sensors stopped again.
So I unstalled again and rebooted the phone again and... Nothing! This seens to be completly random.
Do you use any Gyroscope 'intensive' app?
I factory reset my handset and nothing, so it's not an app or wallpaper I'm using. After the restore I used the Internet Browser to check the screen rotation, nothing.
I've a similar problem here... the sensors sometimes doesn't work, sometimes does work, it's random. Already tried to restore factory defaults and many different FWs, always with this same behavior....
My S4 has only 3 weeks, and it came like this, but I took some time to identify the problem...
I have the same problem, I tried factory reset several times, changed the FW for all available versions and the problem continues. In my case the only difference is that the sensors operate for a maximum of 30minutes after I reboot the phone and then stop again.
Has anything else happened like getting water near the phone in order for sensors to not work..
Or the phobe fell down?

Can the problem due to the installation of a third-party launcher like Nova or Apex? When using these launcher, none of the sensors work. When back to the default TW launcher, some work while others not working.
Is this a bug?

I used stock Touchwiz. My sensors suddenly stopped working. I did a hard reset and problem still existed. Today I will get my phone from repair and post some more info.
Using the *#0*# test mode, all functions are working. However, some of the sensors are working like hit-and-run state. Wondering should I bring it down to the service center.
Got my SGS4 today and flashed it to GE ROM. Everything woks fine, but I tried taking a picture with Photosphere and it kept on drifting off.
I guess that means I have a similar problem. Will test Service menu later today...
OK, Service Menu does not work on GE edition ROM...but I found a little app called Sensor Test for free on the PlayStore and it shows all sensors working fine with the exception of the accelerometer...that gives nonsense values...
It does sound like a fault with hardware not software or anything you have done so you should be able to walk into the orange store or [insert carrier retail store here] and they should replace it as long as your under contract at least thats how it works here in the uk with the sales of goods act
Okay. Strange things. I only habe severe problems in Photosphere. Flashed a different ROM and service menu dass all OK.
GPS toolbox looks OK with the compass ticking slightly to the right, then jerking back. Needs More research...
Update: I flashed back to a 4.2.2 ROM (also Google Edition) and now my problem seems to be gone...
Are you all on 4.3 or do some of you use 4.2 ROMs?
Update2: Turned out to be coinsidence...drifting started in 4.2.2 as well. I then tried my trust old Galaxy Nexus and saw that it also drifts now. I'm completely confused...
Got my S4 back from repair center. They replaced the main board and now everything appears to be working ok.

Got mine back, too (Germany, datrepair.de). Don't know what they changed, but it's still not functioning. So disappointed...
Hey i just had the same issue, suddenly (nothing happened, i was playing some game, not even with heavy graphics or anything) and when i was back to my home screen i noticed the auto rotation doesn't work, after i tried rebooting and taking out the battery i re-flashed my omega rom and still, nothing.
In the sensors test they all fail.
Is there anything else other than sending it to repair?
I mean did anyone succeeded in repairing that issue with some simple means?
Thanks!
i had the exact same problem
i claimed warranty, still waiting

[Q] Galaxy Note 3 Camera Problem

So I bought a used Galaxy Note 3 and am having a massive issue with the camera.
I've rooted this device and have tried every rom in the book
Everything else works 100% however when I try to start the camera app:
1) The camera UI displays but the viewfinder is black.
2) The controls either don't respond at all, or the controls just light up and do nothing.
Any ideas how to remedy this?

well you don't say which model you have for a start?
have you flashed back to stock to see if it has probs still?
I have the N900W8 model.
I've restored it to stock 4.4.2 and still nothing.
When I use *#0*# and try the camera tests they both just crash the device.

then essentially it should have propper camera drivers.
I suppose it's knox is tripped?
Should not really matter legally in europe if still in warranty period.
did it just suddenly stop?
does it take pictures?
I bought this second hand.
That being said since I've had it, the camera hasn't worked.
Have you ever tried a third party camera app from the play store?

Yep I've tried several.
I should note after restoring 4.4.2 Knox is at 0x0
So managed to get the camera working by taking the phone apart and reseating the camera module.
Now my issue is the camera won't focus properly... lol!
sounds like a hardware issue then ?
Seems that way.
Looks like it is a software issue.
Moved the camera module from my Note 3 into another note 3 and works just fine.
Has something to do with software or the board.
Might help you pin down the cause, or not:
Mine does this after I use a flashlight app for a while (i.e. 2-3 hours.) At some point, the flash LED turns off and won't light up again until I reboot the phone. At this point, all the camera apps (I have 6) do exactly what you experience.
Maybe try a flashlight app, turn it on, off and then try the camera?

[5.1] Strange issue with auto-rotation (lock has no effect) sometimes

Just wondering if anybody else has this issue.
For some reason, when I set Auto Rotation to OFF (I.E. quick settings tile says "Portrait"), my Z will still auto rotate as normal in any app that usually does.
EDIT: It has started working now for me, after rebooting a few times, but I didn't really do anything special :\
EDIT2: It is random and recurring. However I "calibrated" accelerometer yesterday (26th November) by spinning the phone around a few times on all three axis, so far so good *fingers crossed*
Only apps like E.g. MX Player which have their own internal rotation lock ever work. Other apps like Chrome and Tapatalk and so on will still just ignore the setting and rotate automatically.
Does anybody else experience this on the stock Lollipop ROM? I have it in stock and also now in kamarush's 5.1.1 AOSP build. Possible hardware issue? I don't see how, though, that doesn't make sense!
Thanks in advance.

Having the same problem on my XZ1, it's a shi*** bug .. very very annoying bug .
Well mine has started working randomly, now, after rebooting a few times.
Very strange, I had this bug for a LONG time on stock ROM (but now I'm on a custom AOSP build).
At least I am not the only one who had the same issue, I thought I was going crazy
Only real thing I did was toggle the Auto Rotate setting under Settings > Accessibility (not Display) a few times, didn't solve it but I have rebooted since. Maybe it's just a broken Setting that needs to be switched off > reboot > switch on > reboot > repeat this process until it starts working?
Started happening again. I played with Auto Rotate toggle a few times, now it's the opposite - no matter the setting it will NOT rotate!
I think this issue is specific to kamarush's AOSP build, though. Stock didn't do this.
Sent from Xperia Z via Tapatalk
I have the opposite problem. Phones set to auto rotate but won't rotate.

Yeah, mine sometimes does either way. Right now though, it's working perfectly.
What I did was "calibrate" my accelerometer. This is simply done by rotating the phone on all three axis several times (x, y, z) I.E. rotate the phone several times in all three directions. This might have solved it for me, or could be a coincidence.

Yeah its not always just randomly. Especially when I'm watching YouTube. Thanks for the tip though. I shall give it a try
Yep was random for me too, but so far so good after I spun my phone around on all axis. Fingers crossed. Never had to do this before, though, so it's pretty weird!

Moto G5 Plus Accelerometer / Gyro issue

Hi,
My few months old Moto G5 Plus phone has developed strange behaviour today, if Auto Rotate is set to ON then the phone when launching all applications which support landscape mode will rotate everything to this mode even when the phone is held upright.
I can fix it by turning Auto Rotate OFF. Does this indicate a fault with the hardware? I tried a couple of reboots but it seems not to fix it. I'd rather not factory reset the phone if possible.
I installed a program called "bubble level" from the app store and my phone shows the position all hard over to the right hand side. Moving the phone does not appear to change anything. In the app its self I can calibrate it and its all fine, it re-centres and works fine in that application. The problem is this doesn't fix it for the phone, just for that one application. I then still have all applications in landscape as the phone thinks its tilted over, when it isn't
Also tried safe mode as advised, same issue persists yet of course I can not launch bubble level.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Go to device help app, Fix, hardware test, and test the gravity sensor. See if the hardware is functional.

I don't see to have such an option on the Moto G5 Plus. As I say I have used "bubble level" app and is shows as the screenshot everything over to the right.
If I use the "set" function in that app, it works, it centres and the accelerometer works great, but ONLY in that app, so I am not sure what the issue is, the hardware seems to work, but default has a massive offset. I don't see a way to remove this massive offset.

Ahh ok, yes I do have this App, it for some reason is "not visible" but will come up as a search.
I will check it out. Thanks
Ok, so the only one which seems relevant is "gravity sensor" but these tests don't seem to tell me a great deal, yes the stuff axis move around with the gravity sensor but no idea if its working correctly. X and Z figures seem too high when its on a flat surface to me. But the letter of the test says "do they move?", yes they do. I think I know the sensor is working, its just not "centred" so it has it appears to have a massive offset by default.
This massive offset by default appeared like 2 days ago, as per the attached screenshot in the OP.
Thanks for trying anyway.

This is what it should look like in a flat surface. And the values should change based on the orientation of the phone. If it's not you should probably contact customer support.

Yeh, thanks for that, my top line was way out (full like your bottom line), its as though the accelerometer had a massive offset in that axis set somehow and I cannot reset it. If I was to use bubble level it would work fine but only in that application.
On advice of the Moto people I did a factory reset at the weekend (which I didn't really want to do) but it is working again. Very, very bizarre. I have put all my apps back on and its all normal. I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it short of doing a Factory reset.
It now looks similar to yours although my top two lines are pretty much identical in the middle and the bottom line full.
Thanks for the help.
