I have no idea what I did wrong, but I installed CWM Recovery on my i9505, then made a backup, and it all went fine. Now I'm trying to access the backup file to move it to my computer but even though I can enter the clockworkmod folder in the phone's internal memory, the file is not there, I can't even see it from ES File Explorer or any other way. The space was used though, because I had around 4Gb free before, and now I have only a few Mbs.
What happened?
I think I solved it, but there's definitely something wrong here.
The backup folder was in /data/media/, what's up with that? That can't be right.
I had this problem before I couldn't locate my backups because I wanted to transfer them over to my computer so I use a app call "rom manager" it locates ur backups, and u can delete ur old backups with this app also to save memory. So I deteted my backup and did it over again but to my external card and it works.

So recently I flashed another rom, but before doing so I did a backup within clockwork and now I don't need it anymore. I've tried various file explorers that have root access but I cannot find the backup....
Us there a specific way to delete them, an app or the directory of the backup? Thanks! !!

You don't need root access, just get any file manager and lookup for the clockwork folder in your SD card, saves are named according the date you made the save. Something like sdcard>clockwork>buckup>your save <-delete

Yeah that's the way ok, i had done a few backups and was wondering why i was running low on memory on my SD card when i remembered it was the backups i did so i deleted them and now have much more room, you really only need 1 backup at any one time anyway.
Take a look at my screenshot, if you add up all my usage + free space, it comes out to about 11.42GB. Subtract that from Total space of 12.92GB and you have about 1.5GB of space that's not being reported.
Now what made me notice this was, the other day I made a backup in TWRP, which according to TWRP, will use 1.4+GB of storage. Today I wanted to restore this backup, but TWRP shows that I don't have any backups. I booted back into Android and used file explorer to browse the TWRP folder, and it was empty. I made another backup in TWRP just now to make sure it was backing up properly, and everything seems fine.
Does this look normal? How much unreported spaced is being used on your device?
Edit: So it turns out to be an issue with TWRP. For some reason, the first backup ends up in /data/media/TWRP.
You should try a free app in the app store called storage analyser. It gives you a clear picture of where all you data is being stored. I found a few gb of data that where being used up by things I had installed previously and then left data behind when un installed.

Interesting. Storage Analyzer is reporting 7.97GB of free space, while Android is reporting 5.33GB.

TWRP save backups to the wrong location occasionally.
Using a root explorer. check your mnt/shell/emulated folder. you should find a TWRP folder either in shell or in emulated.
Move it to mnt/shell/emulated/0, or delete it if you need to.
Edit: when the backup folder not in these folder, android system will think it to be "system data"

I don't see a TWRP folder in /mnt/shell, and /mnt/shell/emulated does not exist. Anywhere else I should be looking?

It never showed correct for me, especially cuz it wouldnt read a lot of files that i just dragged into my phone like a usb storage...
You would think the android team would get these kind of small things fixed...
long shot but If you use linux and delete a file, some put it into a hidden folder .Trash-1000 rather than actually deleting it.
Alright, the same exact thing just happened on my girlfriends phone. She saw my phone and liked how my colors looked, so I flash Franco's kernel onto hers. Before I flashed, I created a back up in TWRP. Again, this backup is no where to be found, and her phone just lost 1.6GB of free space.
Maybe I'll post in the TWRP thread.

Where should we move the backups to? I'm afraid if I move them, they won't show up in recovery.
I'm using CWM and it looks like backups are saved in /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup
I made a full backup of my N7 with CWM and then moved the backup folder to my computer. The device however still thinks the folder is on the SD card. I can see it in ES File Explorer, and when I try to delete it through that, it says "cannot be deleted" (presumably because it's not actually there). It's taking up almost 2 gigs of space so I really need to get rid of it. Any ideas? (I'm a newb, apologies in advance)
Use cwm to delete it.

However, the phone seems to know where to fetch the backup but I can't locate it personally on the phone either through the PC or using file managers on the device like Root Explorer and Solid Explorer. I even used Solid Edxplorer to change permissions so that I could see all hidden files. Still, all I saw was a 35 byte file named .recovery_version located in /sdcard/clockworkmod with these permissions: rw-rw-r-- and from what I see in the properties of the file it is an MD5. That is all I see. In clockworkmod recovery, the backup is quoted to be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. I can't see that file on my device. Why aren't I seeing this nandroid backup of mine yet it is in the internal storage? I want to move it from my ohone to PC to free up space since it occupies around 3 GB of the precious storage (you all know the storage issues the GS4 is facing don't you?). Help please.

use es explorer, enable root, move clockworckmod folder to sd card then to your pc
or use adb command to pull it to your pc

If you cannot see or find it in your /sdcard internal, look in your external sdcard /clockworkmod
folder and sub directories in that folder.
The backups are either in internal or external sdcard /clockworkmod and it's sub-directories

Really appreciate this. Was looking around and noticed my phone storage was fairly low, and couldn't find my stock backup to save my life. Googled this and it brought it right up! Again, thanks! Was fixing to make another backup of my current setup and realized I didn't have enough room lol.

I had similar issue.
Your advice resolved it for me as it was exactly where you pointed.
I go about it a bit differently. Under settings in CWMR you can change the backup location to the external sdcard. Do your backup, connect your phone to the pc and copy it off like any other file. The only downside is you need the available space on your card.

Until you are on the road and need that backup because you got a bad dl. Unless you keep a zip drive on you.. Which is actually a good idea. I switched over to twrp so I can save it to extsd.

Brain fart. I meant to say I change the settings in ROM Manager not CWMR.
I think we are talking about doing the same thing but with different apps. I change the location setting in ROM Manager which I use for my backups and it automatically saves the backup to the extsd instead of the device. I then copy it to my pc but always maintain the latest backup on my extsd in case I need it wherever I am. Done and done. No annoying copying from device to extsd to pc or using download server or an adb pull needed.
It's personal preference to use ROM Manager with CWMR or TWRP. It doesn't matter to me. I started off using clockworkmod's apps some time ago and am happy with them. I just moved to 4.2.2 and noticed how ROM Manager handles the backups differently and the number of questions regarding how to get them off their phone. This is my solution and how I have always done it.

open your es explorer and active it'a rooting option in slide panel or use root expkorer then go to this path
mnt//shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/ you will fine a folder named this date and time thats your backup folder copy it into your mobile storage .... done the n copy or move it in to your pc like normaly file ...
Why is this all the sudden not put on the sdcard? Privacy? Anyway to change recovery to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup?

In Android 4.2+ backups are placed in secure directory, inaccessible to other apps. Backups can be pulled with adb or by using the ROM Manager Backup Download Server.

Ehm, no. Running 4.4.2 and still the back-ups are located in the directories talked about above. Easily accessible by all file manager apps.
Never been any other way as well.

I have the same problem....
The backup was made through the CWM in recovery mode...
The MD5 checksum gave an error..I am trying to fix it so I need access to the files.
I can see the backup folders in recovery mode but cant find them with any file explorer nor did they show with adb pulling sdcard...
Any ideas??

So I did a backup yesterday, installed diskusage app and noticed that the backup file has around 1.5 GB.
I kinda need some free space on my phone so I was thinking if is there any way to keep the backup file in my PC and use it with some sort of a program to push it into my phone if it goes into a bootloop or anything happens to it.
If you do a nandroid backup or a backup via adb, you get a backup file. This backup file has several GBs of size depending on your used storage. This file can be copied to your computer and restored anytime.
I know that.What I asked is this: let's say I make a backup file. I copy it in my PC, then delete it from phone.Next day my phone goes into a bootloop or.. I don't know, something happens to it and I need that backup file.What do I do?
What does the diskusage app backup? Most likely your going to have to get past the bootloop first. Then you can copy and paste it back to your device.
