[solved] Note 3 Compass spinning gyro_cal_data - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a problem with my Note 3 Compass "spastic spinning problem" I tried a bunch of fixes from the forums. Calibrating with GPS Status would calm it down a bit for a minute, then it would start spinning again. I was thinking that maybe permissions were screwed up in the config file, but finally found a file in /efs "gyro_cal_data".
I decided to move it out of efs so I could see if it was causing the problem. Yup, that was it. gyro_cal_data didn't rebuild in efs and compass gyro are back to normal.
Used root explorer to move the file to external sd card, so I could move it back if needed. Rebooted, GPS compass and gyroscope were now smoothly moving. Used tools from GPS Status Pro to calibrate compass, pitch, and roll. It's all good now

Google Maps Compass issue...

I've been telling myself for weeks that I'm not going to worry about it.
In Google Maps when I use the compass mode on Street View it responds... but very strangely. It's difficult to explain but I have to spin in circles slowly just to almost all the way around 360 degrees just to do a 180 on Maps. Obviously the trackball works on it just fine so I'm not really worried about it and it's not worth wiping and starting from scratch. So like I said... I didn't worry about it.
Since then I've tried Haykuro 5.0.1G and everything worked great. Too great in fact. The Google Maps Compass mode works perfectly. I flash back to RC33 and I have the same problems so it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue.
I'm not near metal, I've recalibrated the compass by the "Figure 8" method, all other apps (Brain Genious, Bubble, Planetarium, Sky Map) seem to work alright.
I have all caches to SD, apps to SD, auto-rotate disabled, transitions and such disabled.
And the weird thing is that I was able to go straight from RC33 to 5.0.1G without loosing any apps. I just needed to use Mybackup to restore my data (texts, phone log, etc) so I doubt that it's a problem with an existing app.
I'm thinking it might be my class 4 card with my Maps cache to SD. Maybe I'll try moving it back to see if the problem clears up. Any input anyone?

(In progress)Eugene Vibrants GPS fix for the Samsung captivate

Ok guys i already 'ported" the fix, but i need someone with a pure stock rom to dump the following files from there hes/her device:
build.prop found in /system
contents.db found in /system/csc
customer.xml in /system/csc
feature.xml in /system/csc
others.xml in /system/csc
sales_code.dat in /system/csc
You can use root explorer to copy this files over to your sdcard, and post them here, thank you.

Excellent thank you, il keep you guys updated.
Can someone with stock gps settings test this update.zip, http://www.mediafire.com/?g4p1kyiie6d3xov , let me know if it works, as always do a nandroid backup just in case your phone turns into an iphone or something, AND im not responsible if your device catches on fire or decides to leave if you after applying this update.zip =]
Intructions Step by step:
1.Place Captivate_GPS_Eugene_Fix.zip in you internal Sdcard
2. Go to rom manager choose "boot into recovery"
3."install zip from sd card"
4."choose zip from sd card"
5.Scroll until u see 'Captivate_GPS_Eugene_Fix.zip' the hit the power button.
6."Yes - Install Captivate_GPS_Eugene_Fix.zip"
7.Go back to the first menu and hit "reboot system now"
8.Let me know if it works
still takes a while to find me... my iphone4 found me in about 3 seconds
That means its not working =], on the vibrants it locks in a few seconds. =/, anyways i told eugene to take a look at it, maybe he can figure out whats wrong.
First time (cold start) took roughly 5 minutes. Then turning off GPS and waiting 15 sec before restarting GPS, hot start took only 5-10 sec.
I will leave it off for about 10 min now and report back if GPS aquisition is quicker after the first lock.
UPDATE: After about 10min of GPS off it took only 5 sec to re-aquire the satelites. I had 7 sat showing and 5 of them had a lock with 5m accuracy. Maybe you are onto something. May I ask what the fix actually does?
getting a lock is a minor problem compared to MAINTAINING an accurate lock, does this fix address that issue or just the lock on time?
Thats good news.
Although its a little sad if this is fixed by a community dev before samsung.

Ask eugene_373 he knows the details about the fix, i just tryed mirror hes finding on to our captivate.
Ok. Took a drive and 20min into the drive enabled the GPS. It took less than 5 sec to get a lock and the tracking was spot on for me.
One side effect I have noticed is that my screen would usually turn off after 30sec. (confirmed that my screen off setting is 30sec) however the screen will stay on for longer. It darkens but will not turn off in the amount that is set.
Only worry with this is the obvious battery drainage and the fact that you may end up randomly dialing folks because you assume the screen turned off.
WOW! The screen is still on even after 5min. This is even the case when the PWR button is acidentally pressed and you are on the lock screen - it will just stay there. Not so good.

So is it safe to say you have the captivate running with the
vibrant 1.1 update zip release running with the gps ? If so I would happily run some testing for you
I applied this fix to my captivate and the gps does seem marginally better but it has the unfortunate side effect of not turning off the gps after I exit the application that is using it. I just went through approx 45% of my battery in 2-2.5 hours and I noticed the gps at the top had been trying to lock on this entire time.
Edit:
I just used task killer to kill all open apps and the gps was still actively searching (noticed on my taskbar) despite the fact the all open apps were closed.
I had the turn off the gps using the Power Control widget.
I'll help as well. Got rooted stock with AT&T crapware removed, and RM/CWM installed for backup/restore. Let me know what I need to do.

No, i ported eugene_373 vibrants gps fix over to the samsung captivate, the original vibrant gps fix wont work simply because of different build.prop's, but regardless the fix dosnt seem to fix the gps on the captivate, im waiting on eugene_373 to see if he can look at my update.zip and some how figure out whats wrong...

I haven't experience any of does issues on my device, besides this only changes 2 lines in the build.prop, nothing major, my gps stops trying to lock me once i go out of google maps, it doesn't turn off, it never does, thats not how it works, you always need to turn of the gps manually after using a gps app.

I think he means that he still sees the little GPS icon at the top, if its still there after exiting maps, the gps is constantly searching- thus draining a crapload of battery.
Didn't fix my GPS, still not getting a lock.
I'm so confused that people are still having issues with there gps. There is a fix out there in the forums and on plenty of sights by changing to supl.google.com amongst other settings. At most it takes 20 seconds to lock. I've used it in navigator and google maps and it follows me everywhere. Does this not work for everyone?

Diffed Eugene's changes
I've diffed Eugene's changes compared to a stock Vibrant and here are the details:
The first relevant change is the GPS section in customer.xml. The Captivate's customer.xml does not have this section at all.
Vibrant Stock \system\csc\customer.xml
Code:
<GPS>
<NbAGPS>1</NbAGPS>
<AGPS>
<ServAddr>lbs.geo.t-mobile.com</ServAddr>
<Port>7275</Port>
</AGPS>
</GPS>
Eugene \system\csc\customer.xml
Code:
<GPS>
[COLOR="Red"] <GPSMode>agps</GPSMode>[/COLOR]
<NbAGPS>1</NbAGPS>
<AGPS>
<ServAddr>[COLOR="Red"]i[/COLOR]bs.geo.t-mobile.com</ServAddr>
<Port>7275</Port>
</AGPS>
</GPS>
The second change is to add new settings to build.prop. Most of these changes appear to do with the modem but the two agps lines appear to be the relevant ones.
Vibrant Stock \system\build.prop
Code:
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libreference-ril.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/ttyS0
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
persist.sys.timezone=America/New_York
Eugene \system\build.prop
Code:
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libreference-ril.so
rild.libargs=-d /dev/ttyS0
ro.sf.lcd_density=240
[COLOR="Red"]ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8
ro.ril.hsupa.category=5
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.telephony.default_network=0
ro.ril.def.agps.mode=2
ro.ril.def.agps.feature=1
ro.secure=0
ro.debuggable=1
persist.service.adb.enable=1[/COLOR]
persist.sys.timezone=America/New_York
It appears to me that this fix is trying to enable AGPS in much the same way as the LbsTest menu fixes have tried to do.
I tried adding the GPS section to my customer.xml using supl.google.com and 7276 instead of T-Mobile's server/port. I also added the two agps lines from build.prop. I cannot tell that it mas made any substantial improvement.

[Q] Dead GPS

Hoping for some help with my GPS issues.
I have a 32G Nexus 7 2012 Wifi.
GPS has worked on it in the past - I was using Copilot.
Haven't used the feature in a while.
Currently on the most recent official PA ROM.
Tried to use Copilot, got no satellites. Downloaded every GPS app (free) I could find, approx 5 of them. I have reset the GPS several times, and downloaded AGPS data. The apps show that the GPS is turned on (it says GPS off when off). At each trial, I stand outside under open sky for 3-10 min.
Just for fun, tried Franco kernel, no change.
I have checked location settings, and tried both with all location services as well as GPS only.
Multiple reboots attempted.
Popped off the back, looked at GPS contacts - they are intact. I bent them carefully up a little, no dice. I believe they probably hit the contacts on the back cover antenna, but of course I can't be sure.
My next attempt will be to put a little bead of solder on the contacts on both the spring contacts and the flat contacts on the back cover. If that doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. I can do a full wipe, but I'd like to exhaust all other options first. The last time I had GPS working was before Kitkat. However, search does not show anything helpful with my issue.
Still dead
Building up the contacts with solder did nothing.
Finally bit the bullet and reflashed to latest CM11 nightly (5/20/14). Still dead.
This seems to point to a hardware problem. Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot? I was hoping to use my N7 as my GPS when I move from Wisconsin to Texas next month.
Sandwich little bits of aluminum foil between the contacts and the gps antenna. Sorry for the outdated suggestion. Have you checked these considerations?

I had the same problem with many different Roms on my N7. Finally I have found a solution in the web:
1) Generate the directory /data/gps
2) Change the directory access rights to 775, i.e. RWX RWX R-X
Already then everything should work fine, otherwise perform a reboot.
You will see in the new directory a file named "gps.interface.pipe.to_gpsd" plus some others.
Currently this solution is working fine for me with a cm11 nightly 23.5.2014 (also before with the milestone version).

Compass Calibration

Anyone have anything to offer on compass calibration?
I noticed the compass was off in a couple map apps and compass app, always with the same bias (about 18-20 degrees CCW).
Searching Play Store for "calibrate compass", I found a decent compass app (RHB) with a calibrate mode, instructing to do the figure-8 to calibrate. Didn't really work, would not indicate calibration complete.
Found a different app (GPS Status) with a calibrate compass mode that has instructions on how to do it correctly: Rotate 1-2 times around each axis (3 axes) in calibrate mode. This works. Turns out this 3-axis calibration also works for the other compass app too - using the 3-axis calibration method, it indicates " complete " and the compass is calibrated.
I'm wondering if this is something that will have to be done again after every reboot, and/or every time I use something that uses the built-in compass hardware (magnetometer). Or does this in-app calibration calibrate in some way that stores calibration offsets in a lower-level place (OS, hardware, ?) so that calibration persists across reboots and is always there for any app. After rebooting and letting the phone sit overnight, the calibration may have drifted a few degrees, but I wasn't sure because I checked it in a different location.
Interestingly, another recently released Android phone (Kyocera Hydro Wave) that I checked had the exact same (uncalibrated) compass bias as the XT1575, off by the same 18-20 degrees CCW. Makes me wonder if they both use the same magnetometer component(s), from the same source.
Any info would be appreciated...
Gps status & toolbox is what I use on all my families devices and works perfect,. Once I calibrate my compass from then on when I open gps status & toolbox in just a lil bit it will auto set north. Great app called gps status & toolbox in play store and if you don't like ads get the pro key...

GPS Antenna issue?

Hi All,
So I have an issue with my S5's GPS... I now suspect it is due to the antenna however would like some feedback and assistance.
I downloaded the "GPS Status" app to try and trobuleshoot a bit. When I open the app with my location on and set to any of the 3 accuracies (GPS only, Power Saving, High Accuracy) and very quickly it manages to find satellites, at the moment 26 of them.
However it is unable to connect / fix to any of them, so it is displaying 0/26.
So since it is finding the satellites but unable to fix/ connect to them I am hoping that my GPS chip is still fine but the antenna is the issue - what do you think?
If you think it is the antenna, how can I go about fixing it? Is there somewhere I can open up the phone and resit a ribbon or connector or anything of that sort? If so please can you assist me with how to go about doing this.
Thanks!
Psy
I use this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&hl=en_GB
atm, I have 25 in view, 10 in use, 3D fix, accuracy 33ft, while I'm sitting in the house
Which ROM are you running?
Alright, so I managed to get it working, I am running the stock Marshmallow ROM BTW.
What I did was remove the AGPS data and then boot into recovery and wipe the cache. Went out side and it started to connect and has been working fine since! Luckily ^^ Quite strange, not sure what happened there?
Nice one, yea it didn't sound like hardware, seeing the sats showed the antenna/GPS chip were fine
Probably just something corrupted, clearing caches is always a good first step to take troubleshooting
For all who have a hardware issue with the S5 that can't be solved by any software tricks, I posted my solution in a S5 Mini thread:
[Q] GPS Issue
Hello all, After 2 week I bought my G800H, the GPS star to take too long to get GPS Signal. Some times more than 10 minutes Even with 3G (H+) working well and the configuration in "High accuracy". Other thing that happens is the GPS...
