[Q] Not Getting Official OS Update! - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'm from India and today I received my brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 which I had ordered online earlier. Currently it's running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean but when I'm checking for Software Updates, it says "The latest updates have already been installed". But I know that Android 4.4.2 KitKat is already available in my country and also my device's product code is INS. Being pretty confused I installed the "Genuine Galaxy - Phone info" app from Google Play Store to check whether I received a fake S4 but it says that it's a genuine S4. Then what makes it unable to receive any update?
Please help me.
Thanks.

You'll get it. Give it some time. Otherwise you can install kies and try it out from there.

Can anyone suggest me that how much time it may take?

Is it Safe bro? Does the FOTA work after installing the update in that manner? And does the Air Gesture, Air View etc. work properly after updating in this manner? Please guide me step by step.
Thanks.

Download the firmware package and extract the
zip file. You will get a .tar.md5 file and some other files.
[Download link 1 , 2 ]
Step 2: Download Odin v3.09 , and extract the zip file.
You will get Odin3 v3.07.exe along with few other files.
Step 3: Run Odin3 v3.09 as an Administrator.
Step 4: Switch off the Galaxy S4 and boot it into
Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down,
Home and Power buttons.
Step 5: Connect the Galaxy S4 to the computer via the
USB cable and wait until a blue sign appears in Odin.
Step 6: Click on the AP button in Odin and select
the .tar.md5 file that was extracted in Step 1.
Step 7: In Odin, ensure that the Auto Reboot and F.
Reset Time options are checked
Step 8: Now, click on the Start button in Odin to begin
the installation process.
Step 9: After the installation is complete u will see PASS in odin, the device
will restart automatically.
Step 10: Once you get pass on odin you can unplug the device from the computer
and close Odin

Oh! Thanks a lot.

Last day, I sent a mail to Samsung too. But they say that the update is currently available to particular S4 devices with particular baseband versions which are: XXUFNB3, DDUFNA4, ODDFNB3, I9500XXUFNC1, I9500YDDFNC2, I9500DDUFNA4 & I9500XXUFNC1.
But my Baseband version is: I9500DDUBMF8
Eh! What kind of a dumb thing is Samsung doing here?
Does anyone have any idea regarding this?
Please respond.
Thanks.

If you like to use Kies instead of Odin then you can disconnect your USB cable (phone) and go to Tools>Firmware Upgrade and Initialization and follow the instructions. You'll need to enter model number (case sensitive) like GT-I9500 and your mobile's serial number (from Settings>About Device).

Just let it be. When you open ODIN then it will have only 2 ticks. Dont tick more then that. Then select PDA (i.e. .tar) file & Press Start. Don't unplug the device until you get clear Ext button.
Note: Do check whether your Mobile has been detected by ODIN (A Green column will be highlighted in left upper corner).

No, this is actually a fail-safe way to upgrade your firmware in case the automatic Kies updater fails. You'll get to a step where you'll choose to factory reset or not, and you can always back up and restore data from Kies (you can back up before the whole upgrade process).
Odin is good, though. Basically the same thing. If you flash official ROM then your phone status will stay "Official" but the flash counter may increase. Kies method is official and will not threaten your warranty.

Yes correct it's a big file as lots of bloatware by Samsung and the OTA I is 343 mb
I would still suggest that download install and keep it even after flashing it I personally never trust KIES a stupid time waste waitng for it to complete
And ya even if u try doing thru KIES it myte take abt 3 hours as my friend took more then 4 hours having 1 mbps speed
And ya this won't increase a binary counter

Thanks very much mate! For your valuable information the kies is very bad... it tooks me 1.5 hour per season. .. I tried 2 times to upgrade my s4 but still not successful. Hmmm
I will definitely try download and flash it using ODIN. Sorry if I'm writing too much because I am absolutely noob to Samsung device.
One more thing? Its that the phone recovery in the kies are reliable? In case of brick or something how can I revive it.
Thank in advance

It seems that your device's firmware has bugs so try to update it to official 4.1.2 , it will solve your problem and also note that there is no official 4.2.2 fw released or leaked for 51xx

second is explaining which variant your device is
Third is saying the android version which your device is running(it's ICS)
Amd the last line is saying about the kernal version, kernal build date , kernal build time etc...
which one?
so ...i go to sammobile and look for new firmware for my gt-p5110...the problem is there are like 7 country which one to use?
i will try to use kies after i solve my MTP driver problem !

well you'll notice that your status drop bar have more options than 4.1.2 and when you look around you see settings are arranged into tabs as Connections, My device, Accounts and more even more much faster and does use ram more efficiently plus small amount of enhancement of performance on the device.
Please update download link not working

GT-i9505 does not support initialization

Noob question ahead!
I have International Galaxy S4 i9505 and I’m currently on rooted stock rom “i9505vjuemj6″ (zto) brazil android 4.3. I can not update OTA because of “modified device issue” and also can not update via Kies it says “GT-i9505 does not support initialization”.
Can I download “I9505VJUEMKE_I9505DGTEMKE_DGT” venezuela android 4.3 and flash it using odin to fix everything above?
- If not, which latest stock ROM do you recommend to install?
- Any description for this? “GT-i9505 does not support initialization”.
For install updates for android 4.3 u only need Kies 3, no Kies. I recommend u install the updates only with Kies 3 or via OTA. Flashing other firmwares that dont marry with ur region code is create more problems :highfive:

same problem
Mate i am having the same problem and tried everything that's been said here. I am however in New Zealand and put a Nordic 4.4.2 on via Odin, but that shouldn't matter because as soon as i put the serial no. in that should fix it and initialise

ok
Will do and get back to you as soon as i get another firware on, have also contacted Samsung and the'ry look into it too. but cheers if you can help. i'm just mucking around with other options as well at moment. i understand some forums say you cannot roll back the firmware from 4.4.2 to 4.2. I am having the screen rotation problem with the new 4.4.2 so i'm trying to find a way to roll back the FW and one way might be to install a custom rom with old bootloader that is also knox free via CWM install zip function to replace the new 4.4.2 bootloader with an old one. This may then allow me to roll back the firmware to an older version and kill my screen rotation problems.

Pretty sure once you root your phone you can no longer use OTA or Kies, as you now have custom status.
Having said that I've not used kies once since I bought my S4 on April 27th and I change firmware like crazy.
Just use Odin. 9 times out of 10 any problem you have can be fixed by reflash and factory reset.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
you can use on any modified phone
If Kies lets you initialise the firmware with model and serial no. to the base version for your region for that phone then it will overwrite anything. However in the I9505 case it will not even let you initialise the firmware. Have called Samsung and they confirm they know this is the case but it is not something they will do anything about.

Sorry about the delay. thanks for trying to help
OK so is this what you were asking for?
Screen rotation a real prob, but all my sensors show pass via *#0*# sensor checks. Tried nordic i9505 I9505XXUFNB9_I9505NEEFNB2_I9505XXUFNB9_HOME.tar 4.4.2, then SIngapore I9505XXUFNBE_I9505OLBFNB3_I9505XXUFNBE_HOME.tar 4.4.2 all the fken same problem. Screen rotation all fine when I flash firmware, root, then flash CWM touch - everything good. Screen rotate works until the first reboot after all of this which might even be a day or 2 later. As soon as reboot phone, screen rotation dies and it is a huge pain in the arse. Sensors continue to say pass via *#0*#. Every few days i have to re-flash firmware, re-root, then re-CWM touch, no need to factory reset just those 3 steps.:crying::crying:and is why i'm trying to figure out whatever methods i can to roll back the firmware to an earlier version but no joy....

Indian S4 not finding OTA 4.4.2

Hi All,
I bought a new S4 i9500 in Chennai today from a retailer.
I saw that it had android 4.2.2 installed.
I connected via wifi and got a 343mb update and i updated it.
after that i received few more updates for 43 mb 26 mb and 12mb and updated them all
Finally it showed "all latest updated have already been installed"
Now i again checked the about phone but kernel information has changed but phone still shows android 4.2.2
I read online that for India the 4.4.2 Kitkat is already out
Why is that my phone is showing "all latest updated have already been installed" and remaining on 4.2.2 wherein it must actually show 4.4.2 kitkat update?
Kindly advise

I don't know the reason, but comparing ur stats with mine, the only difference is SE thing, which is enforcing in my case and permissive in urs...
No idea if that makes any difference..
edit:flash 4.4.2 via Odin, from sammobile.. But do remember that u will get Knox bootloader in ur phone.
Similarly,u can go to Samsung care and get it updated..

Hi,I personally feel there is no difference in the heat from the phone.whenever i run a benchmark like quadrant or antutu the phone heats up quickly. even in 4.4.2 too.one more thing i found out is the battery drain.the phone is just one week old and battery drains like hell.within 2 hrs of chaton and msging friends the battery falls from 100 to 63% which is way too bad.i dont understand why this crazy battery drain.

Hi
If you are unable to get OTA update then there is something seriously wrong with your phone. First make sure it is 9500 as the update is aimed at 9500 only. If you still cant update it I would strongly suggest you go to a samsung service center. There is no reason why you can not receive the update over the air. One of my friend had purchased a phone from black market. When he did not receive 4.2.2 update he goes to the service center and it turns out that his was a imitation.
