Is there a way to factory reset the Vibrant to, well factory settings? I tried it from the menu>privacy, but that really didn't do anything. I want to clean up the system files. How do I go about doing this?
That method does wipe the phone and returns it factory new, software wise. What exactly is not going away when you perform that?

You can also do a factory reset from clockwork recovery if you are rooted and have it setup.
If you manually removed any files from system/app or copied any new ones into there, then a factory reset wipe/data/cache will not restore or remove those apps.
Just adding this in, in the event you did modify anything in this folder.
You would have to replace the files removed, delete the ones added, or perform a flash via odin to restore the app folder to its original condition.

And downloaded the app "Emoji Install & Keyboard ROOT" and once I realized how bad the app was, I uninstalled it and unrooted my phone and did a factory restore but when others send me emoticons they still come up as the font that the ****ty app installed. If I already uninstalled it, and I already did a factory reset, how do I get my original android emoticons back??
Unless you feel like messing with a root file explorer, the easiest way would be to Odin back to stock. Sounds like this crapware/malware used root access to install itself to /system.

Umm that's kind of the whole point of the app. It replaces your system font within /system/fonts/. So yes, it writes to /system.

Uninstalling the app got rid of the keyboard part. Unrooting got rid of yours and anyone else's access to the root level (including /system). And factory restoring cleared your data. None of that touched the newly replaced fonts within /system/fonts/. You will either need to manually revert your fonts back to their originals (after rooting again of course) or just reflash your ROM or Odin back to stock. Any ROM flash will fix it since that will replace your /system partition.

Thank you for the quick reply. I've been wanting to learn more about the Android OS so I'm glad I found this site. Seems like a lot of people know their stuff here.
I have a t-mobile g2 d801, I rooted then backed up my efs with freegee then installed nrg ROM. I decided to see if the restore efs would work so I used freegee to restore it. Then I flashed the latest stock rooted ROM and now I'm getting a reboot about 30 seconds after the Os boots a date my imei is gone. Please help

I can't give you specific help to fix this, but, I can advise that you make an extra backup of your EFS. Copy it off of your phone if possible. If not, just copy it to a different partition on your phone, so you have more than 1 copy in more than 1 place.
If you attempt to return to stock with T-Mobile flashing tool all the data on your phone will be erased. So moving a copy of the EFS backup off your phone is the first thing you want to do. If you can use ADB with the phone you can get a copy of it off your phone.
After that, I'd wait for someone with specific knowledge of this problem to assist you in fixing it. Assuming the backup of your EFS file is good, you will be able to fix your phone.

I'm in the same boat. I have my efs1 and efs2 img files, but no idea what to do with them. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

EDIT: Autoprime listed this method for restoring efs
autoprime said:
If flashable zip wasn't created or to manually restore efs img files run the following commands using adb shell while in recovery:
dd if=/sdcard/EFS_Backup/efs1.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modemst1
dd if=/sdcard/EFS_Backup/efs2.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modemst2

So for some reason while working today my phone died and when I went to turn it on it went to TWRP recovery and wouldnt leave it no matter how many times I tried rebooting it. And of course to top it off I cant get it into to download mode to revert to stock and start over. When I hold the volume up and plug it in, again it goes straight to TWRP. Need some help please.
EDIT: In case anyone is having the same problem I had, I fixed it by following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696 and had to use the terminal command inside of twrp.
Then it put my phone into a bootloop but I was able to enter download mode then so I followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663369 to restore phone to factory. Hope this doenst happen to anyone but in case, there's how I fixed mine!

Ok, I was on a custom ROM for LS980 and all of a sudden it rebooted and I had no control of anything. There was no service either.
So first thing I did was a reboot. no good. Then I went booted into TWRP and restored my last backup, thought this would surely fix it but nothing. Still booted but had no functionality, plus now it started to go into a boot loop. Tried recovering different versions and no luck.
Then, I decided to use the Flash Tool recovery method. It worked in the sense that there was no longer a boot loop, but I still had no service and could not use a lot of the functions like updating PRL/PROFILE and few of the apps would not launch like the quick remote, it would say "SIM not ready"
I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point as I only have the flash tool option and since I lost recovery.
Is this considered BRICKED or does anyone have an idea? thanks

If you are still able to enter in the ROM it's not Bricked....
Put the phone in Fastboot and flash a recovery via Fastboot commands.
Then you can wipe everything (except internal) and flash a new ROM.
I've never fastbooted before. Is there a quick tutorial link for this?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Free mobile app
There is no normal fastboot mode as on other phones. Best thing i think try to go back to stock via kdz/tot method and reinstall root and recovery

So I tried the flash tool again using different TOT files. ZV8 and ZVA files caused boot loops. The only file that almost worked was the ZVC file. By almost I mean, there's no boot loop, and i'm able to use the stock ROM however certain things don't work, like when launching the quick remote app, it says "SIM not ready", or stock video cannot play "Unsupported file type" error, and most importantly I'm not able to get any service.
The good part is, my wifi is working. So next I tried to root, however I get this a "unable to open /system/xbin/su: no such file or directory" (i'm attaching the photo for reference).
Thanks for any other tips of directions.
remove sim card and reinsert try that. Not working.
also check your imei. If its not there you may need to recover it from a twrp backup, (recover the efs that is) at least from the time you had no issues. Not working?
Also I read nothing about wiping. (wipe everything except internal sd) before performing a clean instal. Check for same issues, not there victory.
be carefull with full backups, they might contain the issue you are experiencing.

this is a ls980 so I can't remove the Back cover unless there's a way I don't know.
Also, I lost twrp recovery when I used the flash tool and tot method. Now, i'm trying to root and get recovery back but can't even root.

I am not very familiar with your model. But on the d802 there is a small slot on the side of the phone with a small hole. With the phone in box was a small metal device which you could poke in hole and the slot would open. Maybe other user could confirm.
Did you backup your twrp backup of the phone? Then now is also the time to put it back if the tot method deleted it.
Anyway did you check your imei, (dial *#06#, it should show your imei). usually when service is lost there is something wrong with imei, or simcard.
imei can be recovered by the efs backup in a twrp backup. Simcard via putting out back in, reboot, etc.

Thanks for all your help! sounds like its definitely a imei and Sim related issue.
I don't have any backups but I can get to the factory recovery which has an adb side load option. Do you think I can side load a stock ROM this way? If so, what type of file do I use?

Yup, that's what I figured after numerous flash tool and tot files.

Since I have no imei does this also mean it's a bad esn?
