[Q] Noob seeking advice. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day/evening ladies and gentleman. I am a noob, go ahead, laugh.... I am an american living in China, I have a GS4 GTi9500 but the connection sucks here. I'm always stuck on E if I'm not connected to wifi. I am seriously contemplating to buy a Note 3, I need it for my studies and the S-Pen is a big help for writing Chinese characters.
Now my question is, they sell the Note 3 N9008V here, but I know that it being in China mobile it probably has no google support (playstore, etc) so I would like to know if there is a way to install a western version of android? I believe you guys call it custom rom? Or if it is better to have someone buy a phone in Hong Kong and bring it to me already with said version of android? I need something that can at least run on 3G. This 2 and 2.G connections are driving me insane.
I can't begin to thank you enough if you help me out here.
If anyone is willing to help guide me in a custom rom installation step by step through skype I will pay you for your services via paypal.
I am getting desperate here.

Why would we laugh on you. Almost everyone here asks these questions.
I think you can flash another rom.
Goto sammobile.com and check your firmware. You will get many from different countries.
I dont know this will make you use pkay store or not.

I will check. Thanks so much for the quick response. I hate this censorship crap.

Mate, my suggestion would be to get the international N9005 version... More support if you need it... N008 version has a VERY limited user base and not much support...
Make sure its the 32gb version though, not the 16gb Hongkong version as that also has its issues...

Ok. I'll look into it. Now how do I know which band does it run on? Meaning, will it be able to at least run on China Mobile 3G? Or better yet, 4G? I have an international GS4 GTi9500 and I'm stuck on E if I'm not on wifi... I know a girl here who brought her AT&T Note 3 and is the same for her, stuck on E all the time outside of wifi.

The network signal will be depend on ur carrier provider. It has nothing to do with the device.
I brought my Note 3 and Note 2 to village in Indonesia... the signal also get only E at certain corner. But on certain area I get G/3G/H/H+.
It depends on the coverage.

That's what I'm confused about. I got an unlocked carrierless GS4 and she brought an unlocked AT&T Note 3 from the U.S. she is also getting E anyehere she goes.

Blame it on ur service provider.

you are referring to a N9005 "used" ?
I suggest don't buy online with shipping like that for used item. Because you can't check the device on the spot of payment.
If you like to buy online, buy a new one. Much better than a used one, because for used one, you will have no idea what the device has gone through on the 1st hand buyer.

Roger that. I just used it as an example. However, I see some N9005 for verizon and some for T-mobile/AT&T. If anyone is willing to give me an ebay link for a new one that could suit my needs I would greatly appreciate it. I'm assuming I need one for AT&T/T-Mobile right?

Can someone please tell me the difference between the Note 3 SM-N9005 and the Note 3 N9005? I don't want to buy the wrong phone. Please.

Also, can somebody please explain to me why this phone is not for U S carriers? Yet it is being sold in the U.S?

If I'm not wrong, item can be shipped to US country as well.
"Shipping and handling
Item location: Chatsworth, California, United States
Shipping to: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Denmark, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Estonia, Australia, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Slovenia, Japan, China, Sweden, Korea, South, Belgium, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Russian Federation, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway"
but if you ask me whether can be used for US carriers or not, I'm not so sure. You have to see the network band frequency, whether it is compatible to be used with US carriers or not.
Normally an International Factory unlock version, should be able to work with any country's simcard, with a match band frequency.
I might be wrong, I have never been to US. Perhaps other users in US might explain about this.
Cheers.

I hope you are aware that the signal won't change from E add your friend already had hers and it's the same. It is problem with your carrier and not your phone. So getting the note 3 won't improve that situation at all.

SGSZ passes FCC with AT&T Bands

Well, isn't that interesting. Samsung said along they wouldn't have enough Exynos chips for worldwide distribution but I never thought they'd put an alternate in a U.S. variant. Maybe that explains the delay.
The Tegra has some advantages in gaming but otherwise can't touch the Exynos. I'm glad I went for the UK variant.

guys, the model did pass FCC and it does have AT&T frequencies. But it is not for AT&T I think. Samsung has always said that KEY markets EU and America will be getting the Exynos/Amoled version.
Engadged actually concludes their news bit on this with "don't expect to pick one of these up at your local AT&T shop, unless your local store happens to be in St. Petersburg Russia".

So with all these different versions, will roms work on all variants? Just different radios? Or will it be like the galaxy s?

Most people do!
It is tough for us in Korea, because there isn't much English support for our phones, that is why I opened up this thread.
We have a really good thread with lots of people actively participating for the Galaxy S I. That's the phone I have right now.
So this will be a good place to post questions and answers to help fellow English speakers here in Korea (or who have bought the Korean version).
Will anyone signed up to buy one so far be able to test if they come unlocked? I know they should do but confirmation (both from KT and SK possibly LG users too) would be great. It's not that I don't trust the salespeople in the stores here but would love to know for sure.
I'm not sure if this can be done via software or you physically have to put in the other SIM card to see, shouldn't be hard though if a friend is on another network.
I'm excited about the possible upgrade!

Call the service center (dial 114 from your device) and tell them you'll be traveling so you need your device unlocked. They should take care of unlocking without problem. It took me 5 mins to completely unlock my KT iPhone. Simple and easy

Are you serious about this?
Without any charge at all? That is pretty cool if that is true!
But, how can you check to see if it is unlocked after....just put in a different SIM card?
Anyone know the number to dial to check from the phone settings?

Do you have an existing phone line? Which carrier is it? I'm pretty sure that SK and KT can unlock your phone with no charge.
Edit: I can confirm that as of September 2010, all devices sold by SKT and KT except the iPhones are factory unlocked. If you want to make sure, just check in with the CSRs!

My device (SHW-M110S) is the Korean SGS I.
It is not unlocked. I took it back to Canada about 2 months ago and put in a local SIM card. It did not work......But, I did however buy that phone at the end of August beginning of September 2010.....

If it was locked, you could've talked to the CSR for an unlock code. Your device was probably locked because it came out before SK brought out the policy. But yeah, the new ones including the GS3 should be out unlocked.
Interesting to know what are the frequencies of LTE and WCDMA in SK unit
Hoping the SHV-E210S supports the following frequencies:
WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100
LTE: 800/1800/2600
Exynos 1.4 Quad and 2GB..
With this spec, definitely i will import one to Australia.
One question tough, not sure why the SHV-E120S support 80 char messaging and i am hoping the E210S support 160 chars just like all other normal phone.
Has anyone heard exactly when the phones are coming out? I am a bit excited!
I am jealous of u guys in SK, Quad Core 2gb LTE, meanwhile I'm stuck having to get the US Variants here.

It's a korean thing, any msg over 80 characters turns into an MMS
You can avoid this by running a 3rd party sms app though easily enough.

June 28th for 3G version (SKT exclusive). I'd expect the LTE models to come out in early July. I feel like SKT is going to have them first, as Samsung seems to favor SKT more than any other carriers.

[Q] Buying a Samsung Galaxy S 4 Duos (i9502) from China to be used in Europe

I would really love getting the dual SIM version of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 as it would allow me to carry one less phone with me. But in the end I'm not sure if the pros outweight the cons.
Pros:
- Able to use two SIMs in the same phone
- Exynos 5 Octa, which will see very limited availability in Europe
Cons:
- China Unicom specific version
- No international warranty outside of China
- UI may not be available in English?
- Will be stuck with the stock Chinese firmware as the ROMs for i9500 / i9505 will not work on this
Is anyone else considering buying an i9502 to be used outside of China?

I would like to have i9502 and I have the same questions and worrying about the warranty outside of China. I'm gonna wait till it is available on eBay. I hope that some companies could give at least 12 months international warranty for this device.
I am thinking of buying one for use world wide. I assume no one will be developing a custom ROM for this version.
Is there a way to install the Play Store and Gapps?
As the S4 should be highly popular, we might see more developing for the exynos chipset. Once they come out with the aosp base for it, developing for the variants should be easier.
Since i9502 is China based, we should see a MIUI Rom for it soon

I thought samsung released their official rom for this phone? Doesn't it therefore mean that we can root this without any bugs? I remember the Note 2 dual sim custom rom had bugs on the map and caller id.
Can someone verify that once using the official rom, play store and Google apps will be available?

The only way to install Play Store and Google apps is to root the phone. Unfortunately, there's no available rooting method yet for Galaxy I9502. But I'm hopeful that it will be available in the future. Like the Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7102 Dual Sim variant, a working rooting procedure was eventually made available.

Based on offical specs, I'm very sure an unlocked SGS4 I9502 will work in my country and Europe too.
Here's why:
SGS4 I9502 Supported Network Frequency:
WCDMA 850/900/1,900/2100MHz
GSM 850/900/1,800/1900MHz
GSM Coverage:
GSM 900 / GSM 1800 MHz are used in most parts of the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, Middle East, Africa.

3G Coverage:
In general, the various UMTS bands are deployed as follows:
Band I (W-CDMA 2100) in Europe, India, Africa, Israel (Cellcom, Orange, Pelephone[4]) Asia, Australia (metropolitan Optus and Vodafone), New Zealand (ITU Region 1, 2degrees Vodafone NZ), Thailand (TOT (Thailand)), and Brazil (part of ITU Region 2)
Band II (W-CDMA 1900) in North America and South America (ITU Region 2).
Band IV (W-CDMA 1700 or Advanced Wireless Services) in the United States (T-Mobile USA), Canada (WIND Mobile, Mobilicity, SaskTel, Vidéotron) and Chile (VTR Movil, Nextel Chile)
Band V (W-CDMA 850) in Australia (Telstra NextG, Vodafone), Hong Kong (SmarTone), Thailand (True move and DTAC), New Zealand (XT Mobile Network), Brazil, Canada, the USA, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic (Claro),Venezuela, other parts of South America, Israel (Pelephone,[4] Cellcom[5]), parts of Asia (ITU Region 2 and ITU Region 3), Poland (Sferia)
Band VIII (W-CDMA 900) in Europe, Asia, Australia (Optus and Vodafone regional/country 3G networks), New Zealand (2degrees, Vodafone NZ), Thailand (Advanced Info Service), Dominican Republic (Orange Dominicana), Venezuela (Digitel GSM), Poland (Play and Aero2 HSPA+ Internet only[6])

I bought mine in China and used it with China Mobile and my US T-Mobile SIM cards installed at the same time. When I landed back on US soil, it automatically switched to use my T-Mobile SIM. I haven't had any problems so far.
Does that mean you have Google apps and play store?

Should I buy it from USA or the Middle East?

I live in The Middle East and will be going to the USA very soon for a few months. My cousin works at a mobile phone repair shop(USA) and said he could get me a good offer (new or used). With all the different model numbers I'm confused about where to buy it from. I want the all around the world option where it works on all carriers wherever I go, even if I have to pay more. I would prefer the 8-core one but not sure what exactly I'm trading off or even if it's better. Also the Continent lock and the Knox thing....ugh my noobish brain can't handle this. Btw I am upgrading from a Galaxy Ace which is one **** of a phone.

Im in Dubai
& its best to buy from the city your living in cos of Warranty
if u buy here it will be unlocked phone & usa if u get from Att or T mobile or etc it will be locked phone
they say international warranty but its always a problem
get the 4g LTE quad core cos it better to have fast net than a 8core phone
USA models always have lot of built in company software which u wont need here
rest is up to you

Thanks for the reply. Just a few more quick questions please.
1) So when I go to buy the phone I actually have the option of 8-core/4-core? I was under the impression it was all 8-core since it's international.
2) In terms of rooting and Roms here on XDA, is one more XDA friendly than the other? Is there a model I should avoid?

both can be rooted
4 cores is 4g LTE which I think is better cos aster net speed
8 cores is 3g only
the way Samsung 8 cores work ATM is, that you can only have 4 fast ones or 4 slow ones working, depending on load, but never all 8 at the same time. There was talk about software fix for this, but who knows how that will turn out. The risk of buying US phone are frequencies: for example T-mobile originated phone has some frequencies different than ATT etc, so you would really need to check to see if they match your home towers. I'm not sure if US phones are region locked, my T-Mobile Note 3 has 18 network lock entries, not 64 and they don't look anything like the codes posted on this forum by other users. Mine look like this "network lock 310200, 310210, 310310 etc. so I don't even know what they mean. US phones are usually carrier locked, but could be easily unlocked especially if paid COD. But if your cousin works in phone repair shop, not only he should know about frequencies, carrier/region locks and technical differences between Samsung and Qualcom CPU, he could probably get you great price. I would talk to him more.
Negri Electronics sell the N9005 and they told me it is not lock, not branded and will work everywhere.

You should be able to find the N9005ZKEXSI which is the UAE version of the phone thats fully compatible with "My Number, My Identity" initiative. They are basically all the same except for basebands. I would stick to N9005 model due to developer support, snapdragon is better simply & exynos hasn't reached its potential & there is no word as of late on HMP to utilize all 8 cores.
Just remember, even though the N9005 is international there are still variants per country, which means the market they came from if you break it...is where it has to be repaired so buying a local N9005 model is the very best route to go which is the N9000ZKEXSG (Jordans version of Exynos) otherwise, you need to grab one from another closer market that does have the LTE model... aka UAE.
Get it from the country you spend the most time living in.
Isn't the USA one region locked?

Some special registration thing from TRA called TRA:ID each device has one if you look in about device with stock rom or KEXSI csc. There will be two codes I am guessing you end up registering somewhere.

How does region lock work?

Hi guys, I've searched the threads, and the only one that seems to talk about region lock is this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729956
I want to buy a SM-900F (international version) and I want to bring it to my country (South America). How will region lock affect me? I know it's SIM unlocked, but I don´t think I´ll be able to get ahold of a sim card of another country to be able to activate it... If that's a requirement, though, is it possible to bypass? Any other thing I should know about region lock?
Thanks

I can't comment on capability to bypass it. Can you not get the SM-G900M which is the unlocked version for North and South America? Yes, it's also the branded one down there, but G900M is the "Americas unlocked version". I got mine from Expansys, and they have a Brazilian site.
On a random side note, aren't questions supposed to go in the Q&A section?

I'm really sorry, I didn't even realize I was in general, the thing I'm worried about is the hardware, I know for a fact the F version will have lots of support from the community because it's Qualcomm, but as it was the case with the GS4, the Exynos version almost certainly won't get much love... I'm not sure which hardware the G900M has, but I don't think I'll be able to get one in USA... That's why I was planning on buying the F, it's way easier to get ahold of.

No worries, I was just bugging heh.
I have the G900M. It's Qualcomm. I'm running kernel and ROM for G900F as we speak, and it's perfectly fine. Expansys has many sites around the world, including the USA. I wasn't sure what country you were in. You mentioned South America which is why I pointed out they have a site native to Brazil.
ADDITION
nvm, I can't read. I see you're in Ecuador, so a Brazilian site may not help. The G900M would pass with your SIM card though.
maybe someone else can comment on the region lock itself.
You can unlock it by calling the samsung hotline or going to a samsung service center, pls try next time to google your issue before spamming xda, http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_on_region_lock_you_need_5_min_of_voice_calls-news-7184.php

Did you even read your link? That info is regarding the Note 3... In my original post I included a link to another thread in which someone says the region lock works differently for the GS5

I dont think that sammy has different region lock policies for their smartphones, you should really just call the sammy service center, this takes 5 minutes and is much faster then waiting on xda
