Just got a new S4 and on factory 4.2.2 and before I put a custom ROM on it I want to do a full backup with Titanium Backup or Nandroid but I need root first.
Can someone please point me at the right thread for my particular setup.

Ok I had managed to root on 4.2.2 and TWRP 2.6.3.1 and then updated to 4.3 and root is no longer active.
Also the phone drops the signal when locking.
How can I fix root and the signal issue?

signal issue may be also due to network carrier

How did you update to 4.3?
Did you use Odin? Did you do an OTA (probably not if you were previously rooted)? Did you go to a custom 4.3 ROM?
The answers to thsoe questions are important in figuring out how to restore root. It may be as simple as flashing SuperUser in recovery. The ROM you are using might just need to have Root access activated. Or you may have to re-root from scratc. None of these are hard, but the correct sollution depends on what you've done so far.
I've done a few searches and haven't really found any definitive answers so here goes:
I'm currently running 4.2.2 on my SPH-L720
Software/Baseband version: L720VPUAMF9
Hardware version: L720.08
Kernel version: 3.4.0-953334

It's rooted and I have wi-fi tethering (main reason for rooting)
Do you think it's worth it to unroot, then upgrade to 4.4.2, then re-root for purposes of wi-fi tethering?
If yes, is it as simple as unrooting, doing OTA update, and then rooting and install whatever wif-fi tethering app I need?
If no, why?
Thanks.

You could Odin NAE tar then re root with towel root that will not not trip Knox. And you can tether.
Couple of questions:
1. What does NAE stand for? I'm guessing that it is back to unrooted stock? Do I run the OTA update after flashing the NAE tar?
2. So, if I execute the towel root, will that automatically get me tethering capabilities or do I need to so something else?
Thanks.

I think what you really need to do is take some time to read a whole lot more before you turn you nice device into a shiny paperweight.
NAE is the build (N stands for something, as do the A and E - all of which can be found by searching just a little. Build, year month date of build etc)
If you Odin the tar you're stock unrooted.
You don't just 'get' tethering, you'd have to flash a hack or pay for it.
Best bet, really, is to do some reading. You'll find everything you need and all your questions already answered.
Good luck.

What software version are you running? What's the last 3 characters of the baseband or your bootloader version if you already know? Or, are you already rooted with a recovery?

On NB1 you can't get to Lollipop yet due to the locked bootloader. Hopefully the GPE ROMs will be updated to it, but it's not guaranteed they will be able to function at all since we can't flash kernels.

"Towelroot will not work with anything newer than NCG."
-you need to downgrade to 4.4 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
-install the NCG Kernel via Odin
-install towelroot
-Now you should have root, SO install SU, Busybox, and Safestrap.
-to upgrade and keep root you need to use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/how-to-update-to-g900voc4-5-0-keeproot-t3068546
*don't take any OTA while on 4.4 because you will loose root. The link above has the latest OC4 stock rom but it has root. So flash it in odin to upgrade.

memory wipe
I think I may have the same phone. My big concern about down grading to kitkat 4.4.4 is the memory on the phone I am tying to get will be wiped? I want to root the phone in order to install a software like dr. fon or something else that can possibly get text I accidentally erased. The text dates back to mid April till the beginning of May. I don't necessarily need all the text messages, just from my business phone and a client. I heard There is a chance that data could still be out there even though it got erased from my phone? Not sure what my odds are or how possible it is? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try using Helium backup to get a full app and data backup while you are in non-root mode in 4.4.4 or 5.0. This will get your messages & text for you.

Rooted the phone, tried using dr. fon and a few other apps. I didn't get back any sms from before the phone was rooted. I would think it was better than Helium right?

I've rooted many Samsung S and Notes in the past, but haven't done an S5 yet. I was looking to buy a used one for my mom, but all of them on EBay and Swappa have Lollipop OG5 installed. Would I still be able to roll this back to KK 4.4.4 via ODIN, Root, and install a custom ROM?
Thank you.

Its been almost impossible to find a good condition used S5 that isn't on OG5 for sale. I'm not in a rush, but everyone that it is good condition I ask, and they've been updated.
Very lost
Hello, so I have been looking for several days on how to root my galaxy s5 with the same specifications as yours. I bought it in the US and I didn't think that verizon customized it that badly and actually didn't even open more LTE bands. So I find myself wanting to delete the customization and add the LTE bands used by Vodafone in Spain.
I have tried to follow the instructions that they gave you but I am pretty new on this rooting phones thing and I do not quite understand how can I actually follow the guides (for instance I can't backup the aboot file, it says "permission denied"). Since you have gone through this same nightmare I was wondering if you could help a little bit. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot!

Do you asking how to backup? If it's not and you asking about root I can write you step by step guide from BOC4 to BOG5 rooted with or without xposed. Was exactly in your situation. Also can you tell me how to add LTE bands?

I am wanting to root my phone, and there is a guide here (the links on the first reply of this thread), but I understand that one of the steps is to backup "something" (the aboot is part of that something) that I don't know what it is or how to really do it. I would really appreciate if you can give me a "dummie" guide to do this.
On the other hand, about adding bands, there is guide here:

Best Regards!

That's everything I read, I wasn't holding out hope. Thanks though.
Hi guys,
I'm trying to figure out how I can install Lollipop for my SM-N900V which is rooted with TWRP and Safestrap on Baseband N900VVRUCNC4 and Build number KOT49H.N900VVRUCNC4. I've looked into ArayaMod and Jasmine but I'm super confused about how to go about the install. Do I need to flash stock 5.0 via Odin and then flash a custom ROM? Do I need to install from an SD card?
I'm pretty discouraged and I'm almost ready to just flash the stock 5.0 and lose root privileges if it's possible.
I hope this doesn't seem too vague but if someone could just point me toward a decent thread or video to give me some direction I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jeff
