Good : Well i love the new tablet and in hand its light and a pleasure to use, the Plastic back is nice in hand and not slippery and visually this tablet is great. But ...........
Bad and Ugly : Here's my issue with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
What is happening and i can see this being a big problem down the road of use is that when i hold the Tab with my left hand in portrait with the dock connector on my palm of the left hand, the thin piece of the housing is getting bent and pulled away from the glass and over time i see this getting stretched out. i think Samsung should have built the aluminum edging more webbing in the glass to keep that delicate piece from being so flexible and flimsy.
Anyone else having/noticing this issue or any other flaws, defects ????
Here's a few pics of what i am mentioning :

Damn, and here I was pondering returning my Transformer for a better build quality Samsung. Shootz!
I still may do it though since I never use portrait mode and for the most part it will be on a stand, but still, it sucks to see that.
You must have a 10.1v
I have the Google i/o edition and the side looks different than your with regard to the placement of those round hole covers on either side in relation to the curve.
I think that on the i/o (hopefully it will be the same as the 10.1) it has resolved that issue. I am trying to hold it as you are mentioning and I see no movement whatsoever. even if i try to pry at it, it is super solid.
is your a 10.1v?

Same as the previous poster my LE from I/O does not look like that either. So what 10.1 do you have?

mines from San Fran USA - Dev Conference , its the white back Limited Edition
Everyone needs to specify details regarding there unit if they have one. It is clear that the limited edition/early release galaxy tabs are not identically the same as the one yet to be released.
thats really strange, your tablet looks way different than mine which also came from the recent i/o event.
picture attached...
it would seem there were multiple version of the same device if you have the limited edition white backed then...
anyone else? which do you have?
R
im trying to re-create your picture to make sure its not an optical illusion, but your bottom half of the silver bezel looks so angular/curved compared to mine which as you can see from the picture above is much less curved. Espeically noticeable with the small round hole covers on either end of the connector, mine are not very curves, yours seemvery curved and angular.
???

three weeks left and still so many questions and so little definitive answers! oh the humanity

No mine looks the same from that angle , here's a pic

I don't understand - are you using it while something is plugged into the dock connector, or is just from normal use? Maybe you are just holding it wrong?
normal use , i take very good care of my toys hahaha
And no i don't have it plugged in when using it
if you hold it left handed its normal i find that the palm and strong of the thumb seem to put stress on the thin strip of aluminum and slightly pulls it away from the glass since on mine the thin strip is not any thicker under the glass as what i can see visually. so its seems to be a weak point of the aluminum bezel
Bummer i wonder if a port plug would help.

I am not experiencing that same problem, but the glass in one of the corners does appear to be pealing up. Link below. Hoping that this is as far as it raises, but who knows... I talked to the Samsung guy at Google I/O and had my first device replaced for a similar issue I noticed there, and he said this first batch was made by hand in a bit of a rush so that they would be available for us googlers. I expect that the automated and machine driven build process for the production units will have more consistent quality.

Harsh that looks bad. I think the quality of the aluminum bezel is to thin and over time with alot of use our holding styles will cause these kind of issues.

Just got off the phone with Samsung about this issue. They will allow me to send the unit to them for repair/replacement. Im just a little worried about going through the whole process only to find that they will send me back a unit with similar or worse build quality issues... Anyone else noticing problems with the screen raising up? Might just stick with what I have for fear of winding up with an even worse unit. Really was starting to fall in love with this thing.

I'm getting the same thing. Mine was this way out of the box at the conference, and with the plastic back pulling back, it looked like the tablet was warped. I popped it back into place and it looked good so I didn't say anything to anyone at the conference about it. I probably should have though, because now the screen is separating from the housing again in those two corners.
I stupidly threw away the blue card they gave at I/O that had the contact info for Samsung, who did you talk to about getting it repaired?
Not exactly getting a warm fuzzy feeling from this thread. I pre-ordered online. Starting to think I might want to cancel that and just wait for it at Best Buy, if even the Samsung tablets are having build quality issues.
Oh no. I was afraid these reports would begin to surface on the 10.1. Some of these issues described Ive seen in the 10.1v as well, although my biggest gripe with these is the severe backlight bleeding. I have now exchanged this device with Vodafone AU twice and seen a total of 6 units and all have had backlight bleeding and inconsistent build quality.
With the first unit I received both right corners of the screen were popping out over the bezel a little. I believed it to be a problem with the adhesive used, because if you were to put pressure on the corner it would hold for a second then release, and you could hear the "sticky" sound as the adhesive separated.
All the units I've sampled though have had really shocking problems with backlight bleeding/leakage. If you're someone who planned to watch movies on this tablet in dimly lit rooms, you could find this distracting. I do. Its a shame really because I otherwise like the quality of the display, and both 10.1 models are nicely designed and nice to hold. In a lot of ways I prefer the feel of the 10.1v over the iPad 2. Too bad though that the build quality is questionable across the range of what is now 3 different variants of the 10.1 that Samsung has produced. What's the deal Samy?!
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but most likely I'll return this 10.1v to Vodafail for a refund and wait it out for the 8.9. Perhaps I'll have better luck then?

This seems to have the frame already, what do you think that i'd have to do differently compared to what you did in your video? Will it be easier in some way?
Oh wow! Good job
These vids always come in handy, since the screens always break
bad luck on dropping the phone, otherwise great video. will always keep this on favorites incase i ever drop or smash my s3
keep up the videos max
Oh man, that's brutal and informative at the same time.
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
my only Question is does the screen have to be picked off peice by peice.....because i have a perfect screen on mine. but the bumper is Ratty as hell from all the drops i have done.
can i pull the screen from the housing and re-apply it to a new one without ripping the screen apart like you had to do here?
seems like because of the screen being stuck no matter how much you heat it up it will not just fall out and then how do you stick it back to the NEW housing.....?
Max,
Bummer dude, But you have managed to turn this into a positive for so many others and I thank you for that. WoW
God Bless

Since my son as broken his screen and I replacet it, I thought I would share my experience
There are TWO types of replacement kit you can buy for the SIII. The one on this video contains the glass, lcd and digitizer, and you have to deal with the very complex part of removing the old one from the frame.
But that's not how it is supposed to be done. There is a Samsung part that contains the bezel as well, and this is what you really want. The part number is GH97-13630A for a blue SIII (and I think B for a white one). You can google it to find vendor accros the globe.
The screen, digitizer,... all come attached to the metallic frame, and replacing it is much much easier than having to get the heat out . As a side comment, the big white label behind the battery can be transfered easily to the new frame as well, it does come off pretty easily.
Hope this helps (but don't break your SIII is even a better advice !)

Hey head over to www.mobilehq.com.au. as the person stated above there are two types. And they sell the one with the frame so it makes it a 5min job. I recently just dropped my s3 so I have a replacement kit coming either Tuesday or Wednesday from these guys. Was only $250 too

Come and see all issues I found in Nexus7, we'd better check if it's common !?
Recently I bought six Nexus7 for me and my pals.
All these tablets are inspected by me to make sure there is no bugs and bad pixels , and I found some issues randomly.
I am writing down these issues to discuss with you guys: is it commonly happened or accidental?
1,when charging with the cable, if your ear gets close to the back of nexus7, you can hear some currency noise?
2,knock the back slightly with your finger , then you may hear the sound like a loosened spring inside it , especially near the rear camera .
3,when launching the CAMERA and do the focusing, still there is noise from the rear camera , is it because there is some equipment working for focusing?
4, is it easy to get dust into the machine and the screen?!
IF you have similar issues, pls tell me !
thank u!

1. No
2. No
3. Not that I can hear
4. Only if you take the back off
None of these issues here.
Was there something wrong with the other issues threads you saw? Or you just thought yours were special?
I wonder how you discover these on yours - sounds like you were looking hard to find something wrong with these devices!
None of these issues here - I have a 16GB model.
I am usually really picky when it comes to products I purchase. But this makes even ME laugh a little bit. Sorry man but I don't think those are "issues". More than likely what you are hearing is the mechanism inside the camera moving around.

Another thread about this?
Not commenintg about the white paper, but I'm not sure what you think those images & vid actually prove. All I see is 1 photo of the inside of the backplate, and 2 seconds of someone removing one. They confirm that the backplate is thin, and has layers. What does this tell us about the material of the outside layer? Until someone actually tests it or Sony fesses up: nothing.

In the Dutch Xperia Care chat they told me it was plastic. I'm currently trying to get in the US chat for more information about the white paper edits and the camera flash bleed issue's, but I can tell you that the back is plastic.
And guys, I'm sorry for the double threads. I thought it was extra worth mentioning especially when the Japanese Z1f does have a glass back while the rest of the world gets ripped off.
These repetitive threads about already well-identified issues are getting pretty annoying.
There's a review at The Telegraph where they state it has Dragontail glass on both front and back....

OK my short review from having the LG G4 for 6 days now! Just as background, I luckily got the phone through a workmate i know in South Korea so the one i have is the South Korean model. Also, the South Korean version gives you something that is a bloody lifesaver and just so useful and you wish you'd always had one: an extra battery. More on that later.
So I have been using the Nexus 6 since launch and love it. To me at least it's been great – big screen, big development on XDA (I love custom roms/kernels and flashing in general) and over all a phone that i have loved. The only issues i have had really are: the screen is ok but could be better, the camera is ok and could be better and it is heavy and hefty so I use it one-handed but only just. It's a monster!
So last few months have been looking for something not quite as big with a better camera and better screen. I tried both the S6 and S6 Edge and sold them within a few days. Mostly because i think they are just too small and poky or something. S6 Edge was too sharp for me.
Along comes the G4! And if you don't want to read the boring detail below then in short: I love it and haven't really seen any faults at all.
Boring Detail:
Battery:
Here's a tricky one as i have always had decent battery on all phones i get. And all i do is read the same thing over and again on battery threads everywhere: 'i get only 2 hours Screen on Time help!' and then 'i get 7 hours Screen on Time and i'm amazing!'. The problem is the same: every person's usage pattern and apps and mobile reception is different so this all accounts for differing Screen on Time. So – FOR ME – i am getting consistently around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time which is perfectly fine. So i reckon on MOST of the current flag ships you'd be getting pretty similar SOT.
However the one big bloody glaring thing about the South Korean model is that extra battery and that right there should solve pretty much ALL battery issues. So I just have the extra battery in the charging case attached to a USB cable on my computer. If I have gotten low on a day where i have the used phone a lot then 38 seconds later i have swapped batteries for the new 100% one! How good is that! Do yourself a favour and get a spare battery! No doubt they will be available shortly.
Two things that reviews are singling out as ‘cons’ which I think is just silly.
Wireless charging. I love wireless charging and until you use it a lot you don’t realise how convenient it is. I also have two Tylt Vu chargers and they are expensive so i want a device that uses wireless charging! Ok so the G4 has wireless charging CAPABILITY meaning that you need a different back than the one that comes with it and it will work.
Already LG has said that the G4 circle case will have that. So all I will be doing is waiting for the inevitable Shenzen rip off sticker that you stick inside your case that gives me wireless charging. I will give it 4 weeks max before they are on Ebay for $5.
Quick charging. There’s this boring debate that the G4 did not include Quick Charging 2.0 even though Qualcom have it in their chip. Big deal! What you do get is the 1.8 Quick Charge which isn’t quite as good but is still perfectly acceptable! In my testing it charges a bit over 1% per minute. Which is just fine.
Feel:
Sorry about the pretentious term ‘feel’ but it’s the best way of describing a major kick ass thing this phone has! It is just the BEST weight, feel and hold of any phone i’ve owned. It’s not light, it’s not heavy. It’s not small and it’s not phablety big. It is juuuuuuuust right. Dunno what it exactly is – maybe the slight bend? But it’s great.
Leather. I would never in a squillion years think i would own a leather phone or that the leather would work. But it does. Looks good, feels great, is great. Photos do not do it justice. I got the black weather which i love but if i was to buy it again the brown/tan i think could be the pick. If you get the plastic to save a few bucks then, um, don’t!
Camera:
Not going to go into detail because every review already has and i am not a manual camera person. I am Mr Point and Shoot. Suffice to say it takes very good photos. Had it over the weekend at Adelaide with relatives and photos turned out great.
Lag/Stutter/UI Blah:
Ok so on EVERY phone i own i remove the stock launcher and install an aftermarket one because guess why? They’re better. Don’t understand why people cry about the OEM launcher when the aftermarket ones are installed within 16 seconds and are better anyway.
Stutter/lag – again this is another topic that i don’t understand. I really haven’t had a phone that suffered at all from this. I ALWAYS change the animation three options to 0.5 in Developer Options and this often is more than enough. Don’t need to be rooted and takes 14 seconds – why wouldn’t you do it? In general though, i have not had stutter or lag in this phone at all.
The Knock Code to turn on screen. Sorry but every phone that doesn’t have this should get that as a ‘con’. It is just soooo convenient. Love it.
Notification shade works well. Lots of options, lots of shortcuts to choose.
Notification light – a no brainer and dunno why the Nexus 6 didn’t have it and i had to install a custom ROM to get it. It works and works fine.
Ability to change nav bar buttons around and add a couple more. Love this as i always like my back button on the right not the left.
These little customisations are what really makes the UI i think. So handy.
Display:
Great. Bright and similar when i had the S6 as a stand out. Reviews have covered it pretty well too – is an excellent colourful display. LG got it right.
Sound:
Decent! I just don’t use my phone to listen to stuff except for headphones but is loud and ok. Not as good as HTC but good for a phone.
Weird big bloody LCD density:
Here’s a weird thing which no review has mentioned which is the only thing that really annoyed me: the density is 620! Meaning that things are huge! Everything looked like a huge fonted behemoth! And without root i wasn’t able to use the easy way of changing the density via build.prop and eventually had to do it via hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.
Overall:
Found a phone that for me at least satisfied most of what i want in a phone very well. And i haven’t even missed using a custom rom because you can’t root it yet! Never thought i’d say that. So once everyone has it in a month then hopefully development will mean it is even better!
Oh and get the effin leather purlease!!
Thank you for this nice review! Really appreciate it
That was a bloody useful review. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I'm on a GN4 but as usual itching for my 6 month change...
Q how is the speakerphone? GN4 is excellent. Is it loud? I was a little disappointed by the g3.
The.pixel density issue is interesting. I loved the g3, but for some reason I found it difficult to read text. Even when I changed the size. Partly it's my middle age eyesight but it's not an issue i suffer from with the galaxy note series or even s5. Could never figure out why I found the g3 difficult to read. Perhaps it's that pixel density.

Yes the speaker is definitely loud. It is on the back of the phone though and is just one speaker. I wouldn't say quality is great but definitely loud.
Yes so weird about the LCD density! But yeah if you like big text then all good.

I have read in only 1 review the leather is kind of poorly attached to the plastic back. How nice is the leather attached? Does it wrap around the edges and conceal any plastic back? Clean install?

So what does it do? I must wrap all the way around the edges of the plastic back it is attached it? if it does not, it would peel up. I am talking about wrapping around all of the edges of the plastic back so NO plastic back is seen along the edges. Not wrapping around the entire phones back

This is great news thank you for confirming this, appears that owners of the G3 and G2 were forced to use 3rd party apps to enable one or both of those features when using an alternative home launcher. Im assuming you are using Nova Launcher, I have also always installed that stable application on top of whatever manufacturer I buy.
What is something that has surprised you the most about the G4?
Any feature or something unique from that phone that reviewers or users have not thought of bringing up?

Ok yeah.... as I had expected and hoped.. it does wrap around the edges of the battery door. So, you do not see the leather end and then some plastic of the back battery door. And, agreed, and as expected, it does not wrap leather up around the edges of the phone, just the battery door - so it is a nice clean finish.

Can you expand a bit on how you addressed the density? I know you said "hooking it to the PC and using Android SDK tools and change it to 540.". I would modify in build.prop as you mentioned, but no root so no way so I am not so sure what you mean here how you accomplished this tweak.

Ok yeah.... as I had expected and hoped.. it does wrap around the edges of the battery door.

Great thanks.. IF the opportunity arises, it would be cool to see a before and after photo of your text size density.
Can the G4 turn Chrome into a free floating window?
Great review, very informative.
I passed on the G3 after really liking the G2 mostly due to the locked BL. I hope LG provides the ability to unlock it this time around like Sony and HTC do.
Or someone here cracks it much faster than it happened on the G3 which took what seemed like forever.

Thanks for the link. Do the dock and lock screen icons work on stock launcher using this method. On the G3 they didn't scale correctly?
What buttons can you change/add to the nav bar? Can you add a menu button?
Is there any sign of the lollipop memory leak?
