Hi All mates download gmail directly. from
Code:
http://m.google.com/app/v2.0.6/L1/gmail-g.jar
or find the attached file. and simply run.
Anyone get a screenie and a little feedback?
You can actually set up Gmail through TF3D though, right?
you can set up GMail in pocket outlook....
Yeah, that's what I thought, so I was wondering why you would want a seperate app for it...
This is a java application, that is not intended specifically for WM. So I think it is actually for java enabled dumb phones...
But this application has some advantages. If I refer to desktop PC, it is like using web address of gmail instead of configuring MS outlook. So you can use gmail web interface if you find it more useful.
Also you have access to ALL emails via the gmail app, not just the last 5 days or howevery ou have set it up.
This isnt really new, its been out awhile.. Major bug I have with it is that the timezone for my emails is different from my phone, so it says I recieved a new message 5 hours into the future. I posted on Google Mobile Help, but Google doesnt seem to give a ****. Wish they had a good REAL WM Gmail app. Using Pocket Outlook sucks for gmail as well

Where? Please post a link...
dont think so... searched gmail/google. culdnt find anything
You are the best, that gmail 2.0.6 you've attached works perfect and really fast on my SonyEricsson XPERIA X1 (WM 6.1), but download link from google site don't work. Maybe they've relocated it.
I dont see the point unless you need activesync for a different email account.

Hi Guys,
Its my first step in Android world. I have been using Windows Mobile since last 5 years (Currently HTC tytn II). I am very impressed with HTC Hero promos and customization. But before I move to Android world and buy this phone, it would be very helpful if any of you can provide answers to my following queries. Apologies, as it may be very basic questions for you but these functionalities very necessary for me as I use almost every day in my Windows phone.
Question for Android (HTC Hero)-
1. Can I sync Outlook address and calendar Android (HTC Hero)?
2. Can I open/edit word, excel and power point presentations? (If yes then does it come by default with phone like I got it with my HTC tytnII)
3. I need navigation software. (I saw one is available here http://www.alk.eu.com/. is there any other for Android like i use TomTom in my phone).
4. Any email client where i can configure Pop3, Imap or company microsoft exchange server.
5. Voice chat messengers (like i use fring(www.fring.com) for my windows phone)
Thanks in advance.
Jit
Hello there
Welcome to Android world. I don't know so much about android till now. But if you search the forum you can get all your question answered. I'm trying to help you from my little knowledge.
1. You can sync your contacts and their information from outlook.
2. HTC Hero has Quickoffice. So, I think you should be able to open/edit word, excell or powerpoint docs.
3. You can use AndNav2 for your navigation. The software is free in the Market.
4. Yes, you can configure your e-mail clients.
5. I haven't got any voice messaging service till now for android.
Hope these helps. If you have any other questions first try to search the forum .
Thanks.
there are tons of free IM apps out there.
1) Meebo (the best one)
2) eBuddy
3) IM+ (not free)
4) HelloYm, HelloAim, HelloMSN
5) IM app (built in android)
pda_crazy, as you have a HTC Tytn II, have a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396782 and try Android for yourself. The latest build for Kaiser/Tytn II is from the Google Ion (HTC Magic) rather than the Hero, so the Sense UI is not present. Also, wi-fi, camera and bluetooth are not working, but GPS, Android Market and Google sync are. It may require some tweaking to get the best experience on the Tytn II as different versions of the phone seem to have particular issues with calls and/or data but I am running it on my UK Kaiser (MDA Vario III) at the moment and have calls, sms, sync, Android Market and GPS working fine. Battery life is a bit of an issue, but if you can get it working it will give you a chance to download and try out a variety of Android applications before paying for an Android phone.
not so simple
I have a hero. The quick office can only open word docs, have trouble with excel . It will not edit. You can sync outlook contacts and calendar . I could make a gmail account on it but not yahoo so far. Still looking for a good explorer software in which I can keep stuff where I want. Any suggestions ?

DocumentsToGo is pretty much the only app for editing doc and xls on android. If you want a file explorer both 'Astro' and 'Linda File Manager' are good.

Hi there!
As I'm currently a Windows mobile user about to take the step over to Hero I just want to make sure that I can use my Hero at work as well.
Today I sync my work contacts and work calendar with outlook using active sync.
When syncing I don't have to enter any information at all, the sync sets up automatically. Does HTC sync work in the same way!?
Do you have to set up the HTC sync by entering server names and stuff like that, or is it just like active sync that everything is automatical!?
All answers are apreciated!

I am so lazy, i ask here, so i did not start new thread.
Few days still and i get Dream again.
The ROM in it si some Hero thing. Isn´t that mean Dream is rooted and HardSpl in it? I can go and put Cyanogens ROM in it? If i understand it right, you can´t put any other ROM in unless you first put HSpl and root?
Sorry my bad english, hope someone catch what i mean...
Edit: Root and HardSpl ok, so now Cyan and works great...
Hello (please excuse my English),
I am a vb.net developer with an android phone. I like to write a windows application that will manage the phone's contacts with no sync (the application will read and write the contacts directly on the phone via usb).
I like to make this because I really need a convenient way to manage my >480 contacts with groups, links between them, photos etc.
But I don't know what is the best method to connect to the phone. I have download various open-source projects that use abd.exe but I can not figure it out there is not documentation about this.
Anyway are there any suggestions on this or maybe any how to?
Thank You
No help from me, but lots of encouragement though ... I hate my messy contact list, especially because of multiple gmail accounts... Searched like hell, spend quite some time on failing apps... So good luck with programming!
Thank you for your encouragement. I finally ended that the best solution is to write an android client application that will offer contact records to the pc application. I installed all the android development tools and I am ready to go. This is gona take some time because it will be my first android application so stay tuned...
Ok I have done some progress on the device side, but I really need some help. These are my questions:
1. In the Android Emulator there is no contacts groups. Any idea why or how can I add them?
2. I need some android code guidelines on how to communicate via wi-fi and usb. I am trying to implement some kind of tcp/ip protocol for communicate with the pc application and I need this to be available with the usb cable also (if that is possible)
Thank you all...
MyPhoneExplorer you will love it
I love it allready I am using MyPhoneExplorer since my first SE phone. But it does not supports contacts groups which is very critical for me. This was one of the reasons that I decided to create my own contact manager for android...
Ok, some status update:
I finished my research about tcp connectivity on android and I downloaded all the neading sources and documentation. So I am ready to go with the device side development.
But I really need the contacts groups on the emulator. I 'm stuck here!!!
Come on guys don't leave me alone...
Thank you all
Trying to solve it myself...
First I thought that Contacts application in my phone (Samsung Galaxy 3) was a samsung application, so I downloaded the phones source-code but no Contacts application in there.
Now I found in source.android.com the contacts application for eclair and I downloaded it. It seems (from the source code) that it is the same application which is in my device's firmware.
I create a project in eclipse from this source and right now I am downloading Google APIs to make it run on the emulator. If it runs on the emulator I will start development for the device...

omg i realy thought, it was posible, whit MyPhoneExplorer, my mistake.
great to hear about your little progress
what's up Chris ?
Some news ?
Status Update:
I finaly managed to get contacts groups in the emulator (via 3rd party app) but I still can not export contacts with group information from my device. Anyway this is not very important.
The important thing is that I started developing in android and the results are pretty well.
Right now the device application which I call "MyUnit Android Server" is a multi threaded tcp socket application that communicates with the pc via the usb cable.
I have managed to get through the basic problems with tcp, threads and sockets in android (and java) and it works very stable.
So now it is time to implement some kind of a protocoll for the communication between the device and the computer (any ideas about that are welcome). I have allready implement two functions. One retrieves the group count and the other the groups list. I think that this is very huge progress because this is my first app in java (and android of course).
Maybe in some days (about 10 - 15 because my son's birthday 4yo are in monday so the whole weekend goes to him ) I will be ready to release an alpha test version...
Thats great news, congrat whit your son, I know whats that like.
I would love to beta test, and help out
Guys! I have a litle (big for me) problem: I really miss a few java apps and I wanna know how the heck can I port those on my beloved optimus 7? This phone doesn't support java, but I believe that some apps can be ported! Can I find a tutorial about this??? I will atach a java file that I wanna put on my phone, maybe a kind gent developer may look at it and tell me at least if is possibile! Thanks in advance and please, don't let a poor noob to stay in the dark!
I'm sorry to disappoint you but there's no way you can run java on wp7. There is no java runtime in wp7.
The only thing that would be possible is to build the app from scratch in silverlight. It shouldn't be that had if you know some C# and you have the source code fro the desired java app. But i think building a sinaxar app it's pretty easy if using some specific web services or API. Maybe you should look into building your own simple app instead of porting the java one. You can find many tutorials on wp7 developing and it is easier than you might think.
PS: Have you searched for Orthodox Calendar on Marketplace?
PPS: I have an idea that might work: Search for an orthodox holiday calendar in ical format. You should be able to find some online. Download the ical and sync it with your exchange calendar. Then sync the exchange calendar with your phone. The calendar should be on your phone this way. So you don't need a sinaxar, because you have the orthodox holidays in your phones calendar. I think this should work with google calendar or msn calendar as well.
Orthodox calendar is more about russian and not romanian! Already tried it! I've syncronized my windows live calendar with an .ics one, but now I'm facing another trouble: yahoo mail account not working! Keep asking me for the correct password! Tried to delete it and create another one, but does not work. I've tried with advanced settings and on INCOMING mail had pop.mail.yahoo.com, tried again with imap.mail.yahoo.com, but nothing seems to work!

Hey,
I would recommend using google calendar or exchange (if you have one) for sync. Yahoo is known for issues, and Hotmail... i have no experience with that. But with the first two it works great.
Problem solved. Imap was the problem. Thanx a lot, but I still miss a lot at least a java emulator

If i get you, you want something like whatsapp...
As far as i know, you will need different things:
A backend Server to manage and store users and manage files sended.
A client side with is the chat. If you doing it in Android, Java the process could be like this:
client get a list of friends, then stores in local files. To send a message, firstly can use push messages like GCM to send a message, if receiver is online with the conversation openned, it tries to stablish a socket connection to send messages each other. If no, then it uses the push GCM.
More or less like that....of course there are much more things to do and take care of.
hope i helped you a little with this info!

thanks for the reply actually i researched a little and found the GCM is not a good choice for IM as sometimes messages are not delivered so as for parse i have no experience with that and i found something that i need to have some connection between my android app to server (running php and mysql database)
the point where i am stuck is that
How to connect the app to server ??
and how to give a user his personal pin or username so he can share with others to chat ??
thanks
