That's Google Cloud Messaging service. You can have them disabled from Google Play Service app if you don't use the services. I usually have all the services disabled without issue.
See more from here: http://developer.android.com/google/gcm/index.html

How you disabled it... from which app and should i disable whole gcm process or any thing in it which use wakelock.

GPS won't turn off

Hey everyone,
I have the AT&T 32GB GS4. For the past few days, I have been experiencing odd battery drainages during the second half of the day. I was looking at the battery section of the settings menu, and when I turn off GPS through the notifications bar (when I'm done navigating), the GPS is showing that it is still running. It doesn't turn off until I restart the phone. Also, Google Services is taking up 40%+ of the battery and it hasn't done that ever. I've had this phone for a month.
Any ideas?

could be location service related or weather app related. freeze all apps you DL'd and check again.
That didn't work. I turned off all apps and cleared data for Maps. Also, none of my apps are allowed to use my location.

Question about Google Maps usage

Hello all,
I'm a new user and I noticed the my Google map has the highest use at night, when I wake I check the battery life thing. How would I freeze it until I open Google maps?
Turn location services off at night. You'll have to remember to turn it beck on when you need it, but it'll save you a lot of battery.

download greenify from the play store and set it to hibernate when your screen is off.

I downloaded the free app and there is no option to set the phone to hibernate. Just options to hibernate apps that I installed from play store.
So yeah...

Never said it would set the phone to hibernate. OP was asking how to "freeze" Google Maps until he uses it again, and greenify essentially does that.
Interesting, I check mine a lot for overnight usage and sleep time with cpu spy. Don't remember Google Maps having usage overnite and have Location Serivces on. Will recheck that--

[Q] Can't stop play apps from auto updating

Over the last 3 days, Google play has been updating my apps even though I I have always had auto-update apps unchecked since I've gotten the phone.
How do I stop this? Is there another setting somewhere?
Did you go into settings when your in Google play and turn auto update off?

Yes. Its not checked.
Go into settings, apps, Google play and clear cache and data

Mine doesn't have a check box. You have to click the option and select do not auto update apps. Mine was set to auto update over WiFi.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app
Sorry not to be clear. I selected never update in the same place.
I cleared the cache and went back in and it was set to always update.
I set it back to never. may apps are now all up to date. I'll let you know what happens when one is due.

KitKat disable apps getting location

Is it possible to disable apps getting access to location individually?
If I turn on location Facebook seems eager to always wanting to know my location. And it also says high battery usage.

If you go to settings > location access. you can turn it off though this turns if off for all apps.

[Q] GPS icon?

Dear members,
Since I installed kk the GPS icon is always present in the notification bar (see picture). Is this normal? If not, what can I do about it too get rid of it? I already tried disabling location services but that doesn't work.

Nobody? Why is it always present?

I also have this problem with the 4.4.2 update. Even turning location services off doesn't remove the icon. The only way I've found - apart from a restart - is to launch a Google app which invokes GPS (such as Google Maps) and then close it.
I've seen this too, running C-RoM. Doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, I reboot to clear it. No idea what causes it, although I have a gut feeling it correlates with Maps usage.
