[Q] HELP. Note 3 hardware, Nexus 5 Android? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I really like the hardware and battery life on the Note 3 but I hate the Samsung apps, and really miss the clean android OS with the Nexus 5.
Can someone help direct me or answer my question - is it possible to flash a nexus 5 kitkat ROM onto a Note 3? If so, will the S PEN still work and what rom do I use to do this?
I tried looking through the roms in the developer page but have absolutely no clue what any of them are.

I don't think you can use Nexus 5 Rom on this phone, but if you'd like a clean ROM like that one, you can flash CM11 for your phone. To enable S-pen, you'll then need to install CM S Pen Add-on(ROOT).
If all you hate are the Samsung apps, you can flash Omega Rom, it has an option to remove all the bloatware that comes with the Rom. I'm using it atm, and it runs great on my phone (N9005)

I'm not really sure. If your phone is not the international variant, there might be some issues if you try flashing a rom not meant for it.
If you want to install Omega rom, go to the following thread and post your phone specs, people might be able to give you the answer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470441&page=436
For CM11, you'd go to this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616162&page=88
To simply remove any apps you don't like, you can install Titanium Backup, but you have to root your phone first, be aware that you'll lose your warranty.

Touchwiz for the Nexus 4?

Hello ,
So I haven't rooted my phone yet but I got a question. A friend of my has the S3 and installed CM10.1 on it. He kept it for 2 months but today he had touchwiz back on the phone.
He told me that you can download the Touchwiz file from the Samsung website.
What I would like to know is: Can I install touchwiz on my phone? Not just a skin or launcher, but the complete stuff. Without any stock android trace.
I want to try this.
Nope. Touchwiz is a Samsung only thing. You may be able to find TW themes and skins but nothing will provide true touchwiz. Also... Do not flash anything from the Samsung website or else you will have a expensive brick!

I know enough then.
I would like to know then: If I would to root my phone. What will happen? I have apps, contacts (all synch to google) and pictures on it.
Would rooting also break my warranty? If yes is there a way to Relock the phone? Stock > Root > Stock?
What are some really amazing roms then?

Well, to root you have to unlock the boot loader -> that will delete all your data on the phone. (Backup!)
Yes you will lose your warranty when you root but you can reverse the process.
Edit: Don’t flash the boot loader use the Nexus 4 toolkit (search in forums) for flashing the ROM without flashing the boot loader.

[Q] Noob needing help updating and backing up

Hi all...sorry if this is very noob but hope someone can help me out...
i got my galaxy s4 for att and its been great so far...i did root it and got rid of all the junk stuff on the phone which was nice to do... but a little issue now..there is an OTA update and its trying to apply it by rebooting but it goes to my console screen i guess and i know even if it applies it it would get rid of root.... is there a way to apply this without having to reinstall all my emails (5 emails) and my apps and keep the root ability on it? I would love to get the feature to send apps to my SD thats the only reason i really want it.
again im sorry if this is very noobish to some of u but would like a nice guide if possible how to do it.
Thanks in advance
What device? Thats important, and DO NOT let it do the update. if you are rooted, you could freeze the samsung updater.
I would get off stock and flash a custom rom.

hehe I know you stated galaxy s4, but I needed to make sure, US version right?
Use my rom, mine is totally stock, with a few modifications, and FAST!
or you can go any TW rom.
here is mine..

I use Infamous S4 as well, I love it. It's pretty stock feeling.
When it comes to the backing up part, I suggest Titanium Backup. Get the pro version and you can batch install all of your apps from a backup, otherwise you have to do it one by one. It also saves all app data and system data and accounts, so you can do a full wipe when installing an update or a new ROM (always a good idea,) then just let it completely restore the phone from a backup. You can use it to back-up everything, except for the home-screen layout (android limitation apparently.) Plus you can backup right to the phone if you have space so you don't have to wory about using the computer. I recomment getting a microSD card for 10 bucks at Staples and backing up to that. When you're restoring, make sure that you check what you're restoring. Most of the stuff in red are system apps that don't need to be restored (as newer or the same versions may already be installed from the update.)
For restoring root priviledges, CWM and TWRP custom rrecoveries have a tool for this.

New to Custom ROMs

Hey,
I'm new(ish) to using custom ROMs for my Galaxy Note 3 and I have a few questions, and questions pertaining to previous custom ROM expieriences.
For starters, my Note 3 is already Knox 0x1 (or whichever one means void).
I'm using a Canadian Galaxy Note 3 (Rogers) and I am trying to find a Custom ROM that can suit my needs.
Previously I've used xnote (I think that's what it's called) and it was great, except that trying to re-stock my Note 3 has led to problems with the LTE as LTE service is fairly unavailable since.
So, what I'm looking for is a ROM much like xnote that doesn't require me to change my device from the SM-N900W8 to some other modem or whatever, or atleast can repair the issue with my current stock firmware.
That aside, the features I need are fairly basic. I need something that doesn't hijack my device. I don't like seeing that Facebook starts itself after I close it, I don't like seeing that I can't remove stock applications. So I need something that is free of bloat-ware and gives me full access to my phone and the applications that I've installed. If possible I'd like to limit the permissions they require to be used.. Nothing frustrates me more than seeing that my "clock" app needs to access my phone call history, browsing history, bank info, can install other apps, delete apps, remove the password, create a password, etc. It's absolutely ridiculous that google has allowed these apps to exist with such permissions.
Basically. I am looking for freedom, with a ROM that supports Canadian modems rather than forcing me to mess up my extremely expensive signal. (trust me, Canadians pay $43 more than the rest of the world)

you don't need custom ROM just for that.
a root access will be good enough
If you need something super responsive with great battery life, I'd recommend Vision X N3. They just released a great update. You mix that with the Compulsion KK 15 kernel and you have a beast in your hands.
I have a Telus Note 3 and I wouldn't want anything else. Maybe the Note 4 soon

Have you experienced any connectivity issues with this? It seems awesome but I don't want to jump the gun and flash this as I'm not a big fan of setting everything up over and over since Titanium Backup is about as useful as a potato for backing up important information / data.

I have screwed up my modem firmware once because of a bad flash but that's because I was careless. If you follow a tutorial properly and read on the subject (this forum is a great place to learn), you should not have any issues. You'll see that the advantages of a custom ROM will, by far, surpass all the trouble to get there.
I have to agree about Titanium Backup... The thing that I hate the most is re-creating folders and re-arranging widgets. I know that if you use another launcher (ex: Nova Launcher) you can save the layout but personally, I like the stock launcher.
Sorry for the invadence, i have two questions before doing the "damage", i am on the latest NF4, stock rom, i would like to root and install custom recovery and custom rom (i don't care about knox), can i just root with cf auto root, install latest TWRP and then custom rom as usual or, at cause of the locked bootloader, could i have some problems? In the case i want to return "stock", do i just have to flash stock rom with Odin? I already backed up my EFS just yo be sure...
Thank you in advance!

Exactly!
Root > TWRP > Custom ROM
If you need to flash back to stock, use Odin with the stock firmware file from SamMobile.
Let me know if you require more information.
thank you, so i will not have any problem with the locked booloader? do i have to backup anything else more tha the original EFS?
I just flashed Assassin ROM and LTE etc.. are working just fine on that

Which ROM for S5 normal user

Hi guys,
because there are so many ROMs available in the meantime, I wanna ask you for a recommendation. Right now, I am using the Stock ROM with root access. It means, I cannot update it to Lollipop.
After using this ROM for about a year now, I wanna change it to a newer one.
I do not want any customized ROM, because I am using my own launcher and I already know how to customize my design and apps and everything.
I just wanna find a very stable ROM that will work on the S5
SM-G900F
Baseband G900FXXU1ANCE
Kernel Version 3.4.0-1182732 31.3.2014
Build# KOT49H.G900FXXU1ANCE
Android 4.4.2
Thanks for your help!
Sven
First flash with odin stock (lollipop) ROM and flash root acces.
Than read all the s5 forums and check what the best one is for you.
Well, actually that was the reason why I started this thread. I want a recommendation, because there are too many ROM's available.
I do not need anything special. Just a stable ROM where I can install my Navigation app, gps tracker, and all my other apps.

Is the XtreStoLite INTL 2.2 really stable? I really need my phone for work and for traveling. I travel a lot and I rely on the phone, most of the time. I use it as a navigation system and as my office, when I am on the way.

I was going to say XtreSoLite. I was pretty much in your exact same situation. I really wanted a "pure android" ROM (I guess that might mean ASOP ROM, but I've never really figured out if that's what that means). Basically, was hoping for the same thing that goes on Nexus phones. But every ROM I tried that didn't have TouchWiz was just so incredibly buggy I figured the stock ROM was really the only usable option. Which was frustrating.
Then I tried XtreSoLite.
It's like the stock ROM, but you can get rid of the annoying sht that you don't want, and you have a little more control over customization, especially when you run through the Aroma add-on installer, which basically is a step by step "do you want this?", "do you want to remove this?", "would you like to replace this with this?" process.
The overall speed of the phone feels a little faster than with stock, and the battery life a little better. Both were solid to begin with.
My phone is the T-Mobile S5 (SM-G900T).
I'm running XtreSoLite 2.1 Lollipop XXU1BOC7 (I think it's the second to latest version -- I think I read some negative things about the latest one shortly after it came out, so you might want to just go for 2.1).

Any ROM without root?

So, long story short my mum had an iPhone 5, and she wanted a larger phone. The 6 and 6 Plus were way too expensive, so I said to get the Note 4. She loved it, at first. She then started to get more and more angry at it, since TouchWiz crashed often. So I said I'd custom ROM it, after all, I had done the same to my step dad's S5, he's pleased now. BUT, CM12 nightlies aren't exactly stable, and she gets crashing and stuff. Plus, she wants to be able to use her banking app, since it blocks phones with root. It works fine on my OnePlus One with Paranoid Android. Is there any kind of ROM for the Note 4, any PA ROM, any ROM without root? And no, I'm not putting it back on a TouchWiz based ROM.
How can you have a rom without root? You've already rooted it to put a custom rom on it.
Anyways I'm on TeKXodus 5.01 rom right now and its WAY better than stock. Check out his thread.

You can install a rom and then simply un-root it afterwards. This gives you custom rom without root

I see this very often, but it isn't true.
you don't need to root for a custom rom.
on most devices (including the note 4) you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader(it's often unlocked out of the box) for a custom rom.
some device(like gen8 archos devices) even allow custom roms with the official recovery thanks to a developer mode, or they don't have a signature check and just let you flash custom roms through an official updating utility(such as the old advent vega which accepted custom roms flashed through nvflash)
