I disagree. Now those of us with unlocked bootloaders, can fxz if something happens, the apps are still using space. And with only 24gb free before app installs I need every KB.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read somewhere that removed system APKs do not add to free usable space. System APK reside in System ROM partition and removing APKs from there simply frees up space on that partition which does nothing for user accessible space.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was not aware of that.

Rather than remove them I choose to rename them with .bak added to the name, this essentially turns them off but you can always take the .bak away to 'turn them on' again.

That is one crazy long list. It's amazing to me that Motorola and Verizon force crap on us that we don't want or need without the ability to remove it. I used Gemini App Manager to "block" a significant subset of the apps you listed, and I'm so much happier now. My phone seems to run even better, and I can notice a significant improvement in my battery life.

thats one bigass list.

I use Uninstall Expert. It's free. I didn't go crazy freezing all the moto apps since there's no improvement in battery life, performance, or increase in space.
I primarily used it to disable the verizon apps that can't be disabled in settings.
Sent from my unlocked consumer edition Motorola Droid Maxx xt1080m.

I have probably 90% of those lists removed. I left most of the Motorola ones since I don't know what they are such as:
Motorola DriveActivator
Motorola Notifications
Motorola Services
Trying to find out what they seems to be more difficult.

I disagree. There appears to be tremendous improvements in battery life (see images attached). While there is no direct benefit of actually removing the bloatware as only space on the system partition gets freed, you can still benefit from it by moving your apps into system - therefore freeing the usable space

Yeah, I also find almost 8 hrs on the phone in 14 hrs period as excessive, agreed. This was because of setting up a phone after unlock.

I cant tell you how to mount system r/w with root explorer as I never used it. If you decide to give ES File Explorer a try then:
1. Tap on the half globe half computer icon in the upper left corner to open the slide out drawer
2. Tap on "Tools" to expend its options
3. Tap on "OFF" button that is next to Root Explorer - this will turn the feature on
4. Then tap on "Root Explorer" words themselves and it will bring up a pop-up menu
5. Tap on "Mount R/W"
System is now in read/write

To mount system as R/W in Root Explorer all you have to do is hit the square "Mount R/W" button near the top-right part of the screen while in the folder you're trying to write from/to (presumably the System folder in this case).

Google spikes 21 malicious apps with big download counts from the Market
Google just removed some 21 apps from the Market in the last day from a publisher going by Myournet for doing all sorts of naughty things to your device. Offenses include attempting to root your phone, uploading phone information (including IMEI) to who-knows-where, and -- most egregiously -- adding a backdoor that allows additional code to be pulled down and executed.

I scanned my phone and it's all clean

you can simply un-install it, it doesn't really do anything to your phone until you run the app
and even if you did, uninstalling it will remove the problem
Flashing the phone is a bit over the top it's enough to do a system wipe if you want to be 100% sure, and then restore all your apps from backup, excluding the fake ones

This is actually an incomplete answer.
As noted on Android Police, (I'm new so I can't link there) these apps open a backdoor, which can download additional apps that can do *anything*. The original app doesn't do much on its own. But, removing the infected app will leave behind the additional malware introduced through the backdoor.
Is there anyone who knows if these apps actually worked? What I mean is if the games for example were actually games? The reason I ask is that there is a bubble shoot like game installed on a friends phone which works (not sure if it's the one mentioned above).
So would you be able to recognize that malicious app in that way?
Edit: just noticed on the Lookout Blog that they actively send out a patch to detect these apps (if I read it correctly):
http://blog.mylookout.com/2011/03/s...-found-in-official-android-market-droiddream/
So if you have not yet scanned for those apps, do it now ;-)
Thanks for the information!
How to remove and consequences
First i manyally uninstalled the "Advanced Barcode Scanner" of KingMall2010.
Second i scanned my device with Kasparsky and Lookout, both didn't find any threads.
In the end i performed a reset to factory settings and a format of my SD-card.
Can anyone please tell me if this actions are sufficient to completely whipe this malware of my device?
Also i would like to know if this malware actively sent my private data to servers, or that it just opened a backdoor for later use. And if my data is already sent, what are the consequences and which actions should i take to do something about it.

What you've done so far seems sufficient enough to clear the malware from your phone system. Even if it copied a backup on your SD card (internal & external) if you've wiped both then it should be ok.
In regards to already leaked data, I would immediately change my passwords to gmail, emails, facebook, ebay etc or any other site that you may have used on your phone.

Thanks for your quick reaction. It makes me a little more comfortable. Indeed i already changed my password's.
I already called my phone provider, but apparently could not tell me whether the IMSI (international mobile subscription identity) and SIM card serial number are sufficient information to clone my SIM card. This is the information that would be sent by the malware to remote servers.
Therefor after work i go to get a new SIM card. It's better to be safe than sory after all.
I'm still not convinced on running a constant anti-malware app on my phone. Even with a good processor, my cpu cycles are a precious resource to keep my phone running light and fast.
How heavy on system performance is lookout? Does it only activate and scan when new material is installed?

yes, it only runs after you install a new app from market
i installed it after reading about the news, before that, i had no reason to worry about the stuff i download from the official android market
Much thanks for the heads up on this issue!
my question is what is the deal with app planet? i have it installed on my phone along with another app mentioned on the list...why would app planet be something to be worried about???
(P.S. im about five minutes away from wipeing my phone spottless clean thx for the Alert!!!!!)

For the people who are always asking about the best apps for their rooted phones I put together a little list/guide to some of the best apps you can try on your rooted Android device! Also, if you know of any apps that you think should go in this list just post a reply with the name of the app.

1). Titanium Backup **Pro version available**
Overveiw:
You can backup, restore, freeze (with Pro) your apps + data + Market links. This includes all protected apps & system apps, plus external data on your SD card. You can do 0-click batch & scheduled backups. Backups will operate without closing any apps (with Pro). You can move any app (or app data) to/from the SD card. You can browse any app's data and even query the Market to see detailed information about the app.

3). Battery Calibration
Overveiw:
Calibrate your battery when you think it's miscalibrated.Calibration needs to be done after flashing a new ROM, but you can calibrate any time you think your battery is miscalibrated. This program does it by removing the batterystats.bin system file. The OS generates a new clean batterystats file soon, thus any fake information from the previous ROM is removed. It's suggested, but not necessary, to let the phone fully discharge after calibration, then charged to 100% without break.
The app shows your actual battery status, and only allows you to start the calibration (i.e. removes the file) when it's fully charged, unless you force earlier calibration.
The voltage meter can be useful too. Full charge is around 4200mV.
There is an option to beep when 100% is reached so you don't have to closley follow the changes.

POST A REPLY WITH ANY APPS YOU FEEL BELONG IN THIS LIST!
DiskUsage will show you in graphical form a breakdown of your internal and external disk as well as your partitions like /system, /data, /dbdata, /sys,...pretty much any storage you have plus you can long-press the entry and it takes you right to that app's settings to say maybe clear cache or data. Also has non-root functions (but what fun is that).
ShootMe will take screen shots and save them to your sdcard. Handy for showing off, helping someone else with info (like showing app permissions or something along those lines) or showing what is wrong/happening so it can be properly diagnosed.
CatLog is an ADB logcat that works directly on your phone without plugging into PC. Handy for non-devs to get a better look inside sdk so that the devs can know what is really going on, cause we don't always explain ourselves the best.
Screenies of how ShootMe and DiskUsage works and looks.
Thanks, will be adding all three to the list. Can't believe I forgot "ShootMe", I guess since MIUI has its own built in screen shot taker (options button + bottom volume) I had put it to the back of my mind.
Edit: By the way, I like your description of LogCat. I will be using that as it's overveiw, quoted, in the above list.

I wanted to share this really cool app I found on the market the other day. Root isn't necessary for it which is why I'm posting it here and not above in the guide/list, it's called "Speaktoit Assistant" and it's the Android Equivalent of Siri but better! Check it out, it is completely free!!!
Another pretty cool virtual assistant is called "Vlingo Virtual Assistant", it is also free but in my opinion it isn't as in depth and neat as Speaktoit. Check out the video below to get an idea of what Speaktoit is all about...
Siri (iPhone 4s) vs Speaktoit for Android:
Credits- I did not make this video. Credit goes to robifis for the video.
Note- This video is slightly outdated, Speaktoit as been updated a few times since the time the video was posted. This is what has been updated...
1. Some listening issues are fixed
2. Improved geolocation
3. Smoother conversation history swiping
4. A few other minor (but also important) bugs are fixed
Thanks I'm going to get these ASAP!

Very interesting app. However this list is really meant for free apps only... But you know what, I think I'll be changing that.
Update: Guide now includes both free and paid root apps!

Apologies, glazed right over that. Glad to see you put Root Explorer up automagically. That app is amazing.
Now that the list is expanded (sorry), you may want to add Titanium Backup paid and note that the scripts run automatically (no pressing install/done, etc) and runs a LOT faster... other features too, but that is the main attraction.
Rom Manager paid is nice too, but perhaps not needed for people on xda.
No need to apologize. Things happen and it's cool. The list needed to be more open anyhow.
Also, I will be updating the list to include a description of Titanium Backup pro and other pro, plus, or full app versions.
What do you think of ROM Toolbox? (by JRummy16) I haven't used it yet, just found it, but seems it would enable me to use a lot of this stuff from a single app! Appreciate your guides and advice, best I've seen here!!
Root Explorer works better than Root Browser in Rome Toolbox.
Besides, I always get reboot when I try to UV in Rom Toolbox.

Dear all,
finally, I got them...
I was able to install play store on mine.
First, needs root. The only one I found that worked was Baidu Root here.
http://root.baidu.com/
Once it's rooted, I installed Super SU
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu
After Super SU, install Root Browser
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree
After Root Browser is installed, download CM9 Gapps to your pc.
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
Unzip the zip file, and copy GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Phonesky.apk to the device.
edit: also copy GoogleLoginService.apk
Open Root Browser, and copy GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Phonesky.apk from wherever you copied it to /system/app. You cannot just install the play store APK's normally, they must be copied to /system/app. Change permissions to match other apps. Shut down device and restart. Play store should be in app drawer now. After running, it should auto update to latest play store version.
Overall, pretty good. Still some apps show as incompatible (such as chrome, sadly), but light years ahead of the BT100's play store compatibility. Plus I can always backup and side-load apps from my phone for any that show as incompatible on BT200. Quickpic works fine, diceplayer works fine. Great for some SMB movie streaming from my file server. Touchpad input is annoying as hell to use. If you stroke the very very edge of the touch-pad, it works as single line scroll. May be able to remap these later to back or home buttons, but then again if I use an external BT keyboard I'm afraid it might remap the cursor keys too. The visor lens is a little tricky to remove, you don't unscrew it, you pull it outward (if you were wearing the device, pull away from your eyes) by 2mm until it clicks then pull downward.
I don't know if you noticed, I don't see it in your pics, I have a clear visor lens included in the pocket here.
Also, the moverio camera quality absolutely blows.
alcuin,
first of all thenks for your suggests, I will add them in the main post. Yes... on my package I missed the clear visor lens you speak about. Could I have a picture of that accessory? I would contact Epson to get it back.
For the Software Development Kit, developers can work with the Wikitude SDK, a stand-alone (really priced sincerely, €2,499) package optimized for the BT-200.
It is possible to download a trial version of the Wikitude SDK (last update 3.2.2 - (24.02.2014)) after the registration from here: http://www.wikitude.com/download
It's a maintenance release as reported by the log: http://www.wikitude.com/developer/news/-/blogs/maintenance-update-wikitude-sdk-3-2-1
and I have some dubts if it is the same version of the commercial one as really outdated.

alcuin, don't worry. I should get my glass within that week as my dad sent it before to snap the pictures (I am working outside my hometown).
Here it is finally. I was wrong though, it's not a clear lens that's included; it's a darker lens, and one insert for using prescription lenses. If you want clear, just take off all the lenses.

Dear babyfish0226,
I did a review but it is en Italian language... now I rooted the glass and I have installed the Google Play and some apps just for testing. Sincerely I am not happy for that and I guess the Google Glass will outshine it quickly as the target is not the casual user than the professional. It isn't wearable for the "brick" you have to pick with you and the result of the projection is far from my old Sony HUD (HMZ-T2).
I have to play it more, I have to look into the core apps for more details but as Prelaunch product is really premature.

Dear Barend,
for the installation of extenal files, you have to enable the option for the untrusted sources. You are able to install APK without the root rights.

Hello Sev7en,

Normally in Settings, options fo developers, one can enable Usb-debugging. But in the Moverio there is no such option.

Has anyone tethered to an iPhone successfully?
I just unpacked my BT200 this weekend and ran through the forums and managed to get the google play store and root access.
I am trying to tether my BT200 to my iPhone 5's personal hotspot. When I try via bluetooth, it reboots. If I try it again, it will show connected and the "use this device for internet" will be checked -- but I don't seem to have any connectivity. I don't see any network stats and none of my apps see a network connection.
If I try to use the iPhone's wifi, it will detect it at excellent strength, but once I try to connect, it reports the strength and poor and cycled connecting, disconnecting, and connecting over and over again until I forget the network or use another wifi.
Otherwise, I am able to connect to wifi. And I have tested the iPhone hotspot (bluetooth and wifi) with another android device. So I know that it works.
Has anyone else been able to tether to an iPhone?

Google Playstore
To get google play, I followed mostly the directions from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52652576&postcount=3
First: install the amazon app store and get winzip
http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b?node=2350149011
You can install the amazon app store and get apps from there immediately without anything special. From there I installed winzip, which you will need later.
Second: root your phone.
Google for Baidu 2001 apk
(http://www13.zippyshare.com/v/62451397/file.html)
This program will unlock your ability to use root access on the phone. It is in Chinese, so just press the obvious blue button. If it turns green, you are good.
Third: Install and run SuperSU
Goodle supersu apk
(http://www.appsapk.com/supersu/)
This program allows programs to request root access (which you unlocked with Baidu) and to use it. So you will need this to access your system files.
Fourth: Install a Root File Browser
Google jrummy browserfree.apk
(http://storage.evozi.com/apk/dl/14/05/12/com.jrummy.root.browserfree.apk?vc=223)
This is a file browser that knows how to use SuperSU, so when you try to copy files into your /system/apps folder, it can get root permissions and do this.
Fifth: Download the google play package and unzip
Download: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
This is the proprietary google android stuff that Moverio didn't include. (see more details at http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps)
Use the winzip to unzip this file into your downloads folder.
Now use the JRummy Browser free to copy the following files from:
your_download/system/app/GoogleLoginService.apk
your_download/system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
your_download/system/app/Phonesky.apk
to /system/app/
Sixth: reboot
When you go to the shop link, you should now see the google play store.
Thanks Lacodemonkey,
I will try it.

The BEST Google Play Services/ Google Search battery drain fix - AMAZING BATTERY LIFE

I'm sure many of you are aware of the battery drain issues with Google Play Services and Google Search. These two system apps cause constant wake-locks, robbing your device of the deep sleep it deserves. Up until now, the only solutions have limited some functionality, such as location services. I have discovered how to STOP the Google battery drain AND retain ALL functionality. Now I can easily make it through the day while making phone calls, streaming music, browsing the web, viewing social media, watching videos and more and end the day with 50% battery remaining. This is the heavy users dream: retain all functionality AND have maximum battery saving.
Here are the results:
{

I left the phone unplugged overnight with mobile data, wifi, bluetooth, and NFC all running. I'm using the stock LG rom. As you can see, the phone was in deep sleep 98% of the time over a nearly 8 hour period.
You should know, though, that if you do this, the "Google Now Everywhere" feature will no longer be available.
Here is my guide to eliminate the Google battery drain:
Pre-requirements:
-MUST BE ROOTED!!
-MAKE A BACKUP! Use nandroid if you can. Some people report problems re-installing Play Services, so it's best to have a backup. (However, there are steps in this guide to get Play Services re-installed if you did not make a backup.)
-Titanium Backup - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en (Make a backup of the system apps "Google Search" and "Google Play Services" before you do anything!)
-Greenify - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en
-Wakelock Terminator - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.andro.wlt&hl=en (Xposed module, must be running Dalvik runtime (don't worry, this is usually enabled by default)
-requires Xposed Framework! http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer)
PERFORM AT YOUR OWN RISK!! Some people are reporting problems with not being able to re-install Play Services and have had to factory restore their device (be especially cautious if your bootloader is locked and you can not perform a nandroid backup.)
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
1. Use Titanium Backup to freeze Google Search and Google Play Services. This is done in the checkmark menu under the Freeze / Defrost section.
2. Use Titanium Backup to convert Google Play Services to a user app. This automatically defrosts it too.
3. Repeat this freeze/ convert to system app process for Google Search. It is important to do Search after Play Services to ensure that Search does not start calling Services and messing something up.
4. (You may need to reboot at this point.) Open Wakelock Terminator and search for Google Play Services. Click on it and check "Prevent wake lock". In the "Filter wake lock" field type in "NlpCollectorWakeLock" and "com.google.android.gms"
5. (Optional, but ultimate battery life will be achieved with this step.) Open greenify and enable greenify on both Google Search and Google Play services.
6. In Greenify, go to the "Experimental Features." Check "Keep Notifications" and "GCM push for greenified apps". This ensures that you will still receive push notifications that use Play Services.
7. After they are greenified, enable "always ignore its running state" on Google Play Services within Greenify itself. In order to do this, you need to get Play Services to run in the background. (opening Maps or Google Search should do this.) Now you can highlight Google Play Services in Greenify and select "state always ignored for hibernation". (You may have to enable "reconsider state" for this option to show.)
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now test your device! Allow it to sit overnight and look at BetterBatteryStats in the morning to see how long your deep sleep was, check partial wake-locks, and check alarms.
Now enjoy your highly improved battery life and be the envy of all your friends!
This fix required a lot of tinkering and trial and error on my part. I do believe this is the best fix so far for Google background processes that retains all functionality. Please hit the thanks button if this worked for you!
IMPORTANT NOTE: It should be taken into consideration that if you ever want to do a factory reset, you need to convert these apps back to system apps. If you do not, your device will enter an eternal force close loop once reset, and the only way to fix it then is to flash the firmware back.

That deserved a thank you, whether it worked or not. I'm not rooted for the moment, I'm running a little rooted vs non-rooted experiment of my own but thanks for the hard work.:good:
I appreciate your testing and sharing of knowledge, but I easily get 2 days of battery life with Wifi only off at night, so I do not see the need for this. I am on the i-ROM Version on D855 since three weeks. But it will surely assist people on early ROM-variants I guess.
I remember a long time back googling about nlp wakelocks and found a guide from the s3 forums
on my Note 2 i uninstalled google search and play services and then after rebooting when i wanted to download them from google play, it didnt open anymore
i installed an aosp 442 google apps package then and everything started working again AND true enough even then the wakelocks were considerably controlled and battery improved.
my g3 is not my primary phone yet so havent tried it yet, it doesnt have a recovery yet either, and no complaints about battery with the kind of usage i put it to

The main point is that during the day, when you have wifi, mobile data, bluetooth, nfc, etc. all running and are using the phone extensively, you get great battery life. Google runs a ton in the background and this eliminates it. It gives your phone about 50-60% more deep sleep time.

This solution should theoretically work for all android devices and is probably best suited for people who do not want to deal with custom ROMs but still want to have great battery life. I didn't realize we could flash ROMs on the G3 yet. Thanks for sharing

With this method, it doesn't just considerably control the wakelocks, it practically eliminates them. This is simply a way to get the absolute best battery life realistically possible with a stock ROM and will theoretically work with all android devices having problems with nlp wakelocks.

Hi.. Thanks for this guide.
I've stumbled upon one thing in step 7. I cant find the setting state always ignored for hibernation.
Perhaps this is what he is referring to. Select Google play services in greenify and then go into settings and check "disable auto-hibernation".
Thanks for this technique, it worths to mention in OP that nandroid backup is recommended, just to avoid having problems after uninstalling Google Play Services for some users. They can restore backup in case something wrong happens.
App ops also help disabling keep awake for Google play services. Thanks for the guide
Dam i didnt think about app ops and now the play store crashes constantly and i will prob factory reset.. Thx anyways

Ok, but to do a "nandroid" backup as you say, you must have an unlocked bootloader and do a backup from CWM or TWRP, right ? Or is that doable with Titanium ??

It makes nandroids very mouch without unlocked BL.
But to restore It maight be good with custom recovery. But to have cwm or twrp you dont need unlocked bootloader anyway.

Android 5.1 safe to remove apps

Here is my list of apps that I have frozen. I'm on sprint so, all Verizon junk has been frozen. If you are on any other network, be cautious to remove apps related to that network. Also, if you use any of the Google apps, such as documents, you obviously do not want to freeze them. Same goes for other apps.
So fat everything has been working great.

Not really sure if I would consider Google Device Policy bloat

Wow. Why not just buy a dumb phone?

I mean, isn't android system webview required just to surf the net?

What do you actually use on your phone?
If you would have listed what you enabled, I think the list would have been shorter.
Just out of curiosity, you write above that you disabled all Verizon junk, but going through the list, it makes me think whether you even use the N6 in daily life.
Some apps are really necessary, but you should definitely not disable "Android Web View" because this is regular updated to maintain compatibility (not sure whether also bugs are fixed with it)
Well to be fair. It is a pretty good list. I freeze many of the same programs he has because I will never use them. I'm not going to ever Cloud Print or the Google launcher or use Chrome or Gmail because I have my own programs for that I don't need them ever to run. Ever.
My issue was freezing things that may affect your security.

Hahaha. You guys are funny. I use my phone everyday. I spent a bunch of time texting, emailing, making phone calls, browsing the web, watching videos, Skype/Viber, Pandora via Bluetooth. Sure I don't play games and don't use much of what Google preinstalled, but that that doesn't mean the phone is useless. All I can say is that my battery life is simply amazing.
That's a lot..
Android System WebView is the wrapper that apps use to load webpages in the app. I would not disable that...
EDIT: Second thought, this whole list blows.
what a joke of a list. i've only removed the Verizon/Sprint crap and a few of the languages i'll never use.
i'm getting ~2 days of use while still using it normally. i get disabling/freezing/uninstalling gmail when you use another app, but killing half the services that make it actually useful is ridiculous.
So what's the point of buying a Google phone if you're gonna disable Google?

Have a phone that is easy to unlock and root? I don't watch movies on my phone at least not from google, I use google mail but not a fan of their app, I do not like the newsstand, etc etc etc. Why would I want these services/ or apps ever to run if I am never going to use them
I use the play store ,
I think he went a bit overboard on the list but it is nice to know IF you want to turn these off you "can" :good:
Does anyone know if there's a way I can transfer some of these Google system apps to user apps and delete them? Not the important ones as much as apps like Fit and stuff like that.

No need to move them.
You could delete them with Root Explorer
But I would suggest you back them up and delete them with Titanium Backup

I think it is a good Idea to disable apps and services when they are not used.
But of course everybody has his own idea.
I am using Gmail and Keep and the Daydreams and instead of Photo's I installed the good old KitkatGallery.apk.
For me your list is an example. But the list rather long because of the use of screenshots.
For everybody who wants to disable not used software I made your list with text only.

so I removed VZW Backup app with TitaniumBackup and now I am getting "buacontactadapter has stopped working" whenever I uninstall an app...
i assume because it was tied to Google's app backup process?
can i fix this or can someone upload their apk for me so i can reinstall?
edit: i rebooted and tested, notification went away. oh well
Yes you typically backup something before you delete it unless you're 100% sure, otherwise you have no emergency button [emoji722]

it seems it was just a glitch where google was pinging the backup file and when it didnt match the VZW app, it resulted in an error.
a reboot got rid of the issue. i should have know and understood this. there is no way a vzw backup on an att phone would cause google software issues.
this thread is comical. op should look up the definition of bloat. disabling android core system apps does not constitute removing "bloat". thought this would be informative, instead it was entertaining
