Can't update prl/profile - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

How come whenever I try to update my prl or profile I can't and I get the message "session in progress. Please try again later."
Thanks

Are you stock or on a custom rom? Have you frozen or removed any apps? You need to provide all your info to answer this simple question because many things affect your ability to update PRL or profile.

I'm on rooted stock 4.3 rom debloated.

If you're on 4.3 and custom TW ROM I believe you need Sprint ID (and or some other one) to update the PRL.
I be you removed or froze that.
If your on AOSP/CM you can't.

I'm on Tw and I did delete and believe it or not that was one file that didn't backup when I deleted it.

download a full version of the ROM inquestion and find those apps - sprint zone, sprint id, etc. in the .zip/tar file - /system/apps then install them on your device via adb, or copy then open/install.
Only issue you may have is making sure of the right build - MF9, MK2, NAE etc. AND Odexed vs Deodexed.

A second option is to call Sprint and have them push the PRL. Even though you are root, the stock will still receive a PRL push from Sprint in my experience.

I do not have any of the Sprint software installed and I'm able to update profile and PRL. If you have the Samsung DM Service frozen or uninstalled then that would probably explain your issue. Check back with us if that is the problem

G2 Gingerbread OTA starts today

I found this on T-Mobile's G2 Support Community:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1809
"On July 27, T-Mobile G2 devices will begin to receive an Over-The-Air (OTA) update to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). The update will roll out to customers in waves over the coming weeks.
The update provides the following enhancements and improvements.
New features:
Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread)
Tell HTC
Google Books added
Notification bar color scheme is changed to black
New battery indicator, phone, and web icons
Color-coded network icon and signal indicator added. Green when connected to Google servers. Grey when not connected.
Pressing the power key while on a call disables the proximity sensor
Fixed or improved issues:
Wi-Fi calling improvements
New SMS and email notification improvements
Improvements to sending MMS from the Gallery
Your phone will show a notification when you have received the update. Alternately, to check if your phone has the update, follow these steps:
From Home screen, press the Menu key.
Tap Settings.
Tap About Phone.
Tap System Updates.
Important: Do NOT call T-Mobile to receive the update before September 1. The timeline for receiving the OTA cannot be expedited. T-Mobile cannot manually push the software to customers who ask to receive it.
Software upgrades at retail stores
Beginning August 5, you will be able to go to a T-Mobile retail store to update your T-Mobile G2, T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide, and T-Mobile myTouch 4G to the most recent software version. This helps if you have not gotten the Over-The-Air (OTA) update or if you cannot perform the USB tethered update.
If the OTA or tethered update fail, here is what to expect at the retail store:
Updating at the store can erase all the data on the device. The SD card will not lose data.
Back up your data, synchronize your contacts to Google or T-Mobile Backup, and write down the names of all the applications you will want to re-install.
The update can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
The update requires that your phone has over 50% battery life at the store.
The rep at the retail store will:
Remove your personal SD card.
Insert a software update SD card.
Wait for the update to download and install on the device.
Remove the software update SD card.
Insert your personal SD card again."
Excited for 2.3 - stock is fantastic. The only issue remains that I need root to run VPN Connections for work. So close! Thanks for posting.
If you get the OTA and are reading this (or have read it), please post back your region and when you got the OTA.
thanks!!
Yay for you stock people! Will give you guys a nice fresh device.

this will be my first android phone getting a OTA update, some questions.
-If my phone is rooted, will I need to root again?
-Will all the system settings revert to default?
thanks
Can anyone confirm whether or not this is the same update that was leaked in May?
I am running Build 2.13.531.8 CL56018.

What other ROMS can someone rooted run that will defeat/prevent download and loss of root?
Are ROMS based on the .5 and .8 leaks safe? Or do we need CM or miui?

The location of the person never mattered, it's completely random based on EMEI or some such.
I am just waiting for someone to post the direct link so I can manually update the G2 my wife inherited from me.
i was about to say the same thing, location DOES NOT matter in the least. I think it's partly first-come, first served based on check-in (*#*#CHECKIN#*#* to force it) and also IMEI based too. But most importantly, I also would like to see the manual update ZIP, as well as the version.
Don't worry about rooting 2.3.3 we've already done that, and it's great that the G2 is seeing a update for those stock users
I want to stay rooted with my GB CM nightly. It is really close to perfection, and now since Netflix is working smooth as butter, there is no reason to change. Since im running the latest nightly, would I see something that I would click to download?

If you aren't on stock you won't get the update. CM strips out the ability to receive otas, would get a lot of bricks if they didn't.

is there a way to manually download el30- sprint?

OK, a long time ago, I did a manual update on my EPIC 4g (sprint). I am thinking that is why I am unable to download the update through the setting tab a week after the update came out. I know everyone has it now. I have no idea what update I did on my phone last year... but I havnt been able to get firmware updates from sprint since them. I'd kinda like to have this one.
Does anyone know of a link that has this update, I can load to my SD card and execute on the phone? I just want to be able to reboot to the new ROM, I dont want to have to hook up to a PC and load it that way. I need a rookie, easy way to do this.
Thanks!!!
You most likely have either rooted or removed at least 1 pre-installed application. That would cause the EL30 update not to install. You can find the .zip file in both the General and Development forums.
If you have rooted or removed any pre-installed apps, then the stock .zip file won't install for you. You would need to make sure you're on a custom kernel for your current build (most likely EC05 or EI22), get CWM 5 installed and then install one of the near stock roms in the Dev forum.
Yea, it was so long ago, I dont know if it is rooted or not? I have been away from this stuff for quite a while and have completely lost touch. CW5? is that an app that I can install directly from the SD card? Also, does the dev forum have ROM's that I can install from SD as well? - sorry for all the questions!

Go to your Settings > About Phone to see what your baseband, kernel and OS build are.
Yes the dev forum has kernels and roms available for you to flash. Google search "QBKing77 youtube channel" to get how-to videos for doing everything.
Baseband = your modem version. This is completely independent of your kernel and OS and can be a different version from those two.
Kernel & OS build = these must match in build #. Example would be EC05, EI22 and EL30. Some custom kernel's do not include the build # on the About Phone screen, but stock would.
CWM = ClockworkMod Recovery. This is a custom recovery tool that allows you to flash custom roms, kernels, mods and themes.
Easiest way to see if you're rooted is to look for the application Superuser in your application list. If it's there, then you're most likely rooted.
is there a way to unroot this handset and allow the sprint update to come thru? If not, what is the name of a good (stock) gingerbread ROM? There are a ton of them over on the dev side and honestly I dont want to mess with he clockwork stuff. Im kinda pinched for time.
I did find the CWM5 zip - i assume i can run that directly from the SD card, then apply the new ROM.
no superuser... know that I think back, I dont think I did root it. But I dont know why else the carrier update wont work?
ok, I just looked @ the current version(s).
BASEBAND: d700.0.55.DK28
KERNAL:2.6.32.9
BUILD: FROYO.DK28
so, what is going to be the easiest way to get this to EL30?
I am almost done bothering you guys - I promise!
Odining the el30 stock package and flashing an ec05 modem and then flashing the ec05 to el30 delta
Ill offer to do it for you in a little over 15 minutes if you'd like via teamviewer

com.sec.app.MIPErrorNotifier running after restart

Another odd thing I am seeing since the new update, is every time I reboot, if I go into the task manager to see all my open applications... After about a minute or so, I notice there is an app in there that says MIPerroractivity, when I click app info it says it is an app called com.sec.app.MIPErrorNotifier. Why is this automatically open like an app in my task manager when I reboot? Any ody else seeing this?

Did the same thing.
I also get this PITA notice.
Only thing I have been able to find so far is it appears to have something to do with "Mobile IP ERRor".
I will not claim to know what this means.
I have noticed that I have no cell service while roaming at home anymore.
Hopefully, this is because I am slightly (1/4 mile) outside of the official roaming service area.
I am hoping I can reset the phone profile once I get back into Sprint's network later today.
I am also not sure if this is related to MY upgrading to MF9 using the manual ZIP from SD card method and not waiting for the official OTA update.
I already posted that I did the ota stock non rooted and it appears for me.

Ok, so I've been doing a little testing this AM to see if I could get to the bottom of this error.
After rebooting, locking and unlocking a ton of times I've decided its related to wifi connecting on the initial boot.
After a while I started noticing a pattern in relation to the toast message that pops up when it initially connects to wifi and the error showing up.
To confirm my theory, I removed the local wifi at my office, and on reboot, no error.
I have zero clue on how to fix the issue, but just wanted to point any devs looking into this in the right direction.
Additional notes, I'm stock, not rooted, and updated via the sdcard method.

Installing updated mail app

So the long story short is that I rooted my phone right when it came out, on the old firmware. This means my phone is 'unofficial' and won't accept ota updates. I've tried all the guides and advise on posts to make it official but Nothing worked. Oh well. I really just wanted to update to mf3 strictly for the mail app which now has push.
Anyone have a copy of the stock app. Can I just replace the apk on my phone or something?

If you have an older firmware version such as MDB or MDL, you should thank your lucky stars. You do NOT want MF3! If you update to MF3 then you will loose the ability to install custom ROMs (except for using tricks like SafeStrap) because the bootloader in MF3 is locked down tight.
If you are currently on MDB or MDL, I recommend that you install a custom ROM immediately to ensure that you don't automatically get updated to MF3. Assuming that you have an AT7T i337 ...
If you don't yet have a custom recovery installed, you can use CASUAL to install one easily:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297900
Once your custom recovery is installed, then you can install this ROM to get a significantly improved version of MF3. Install the older version 2.5 for now for full functionality, since version 3.0 is a "preview" release of Android 4.3. This will update all your apps to the MF3 versions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280556
Good luck.
Thanks for the advice,
While I love playing around with the phone and customizing as much as possible, I refuse to use custom roms. At the end of the day I don't want to compromise reliability at all. All the custom roms are cool, but there's a reason they usually get nightly updates (bugs).
I don't have to worry about my phone auto updating.... I edited that one system file that disables the update system.
I really like the way my phone e is now, so I don't want to 'flash' it and have to reload and re customize everything... My wife has mf3 and looks like the only improvement is the mail app. Hence why I'm looking for a plug and play solution

Well I just installed the kitkat mail app and unfortunately it doesn't have push! That'd the reason I needed to updated my mail up. So back to looking into Joe to get the mf3 mail app on my phone
which mail are you using that push isn't an option? the stock mail app on MDL can receive push email... its likely your mail provider doesn't support it.
Gmail....
My wife's mf3 has settings for push, mine only has the 'check every X minutes' in the settings

The MDOB rom is not like that. Ver 2.5 is based on the stock MF3 firmware and stock kernel. You would not be compromising reliability by using that rom. It is stable and does not need frequent updates. You'd be getting all the features and benefits of MF3 without the Samsung and AT&T bloat and restrictions.
Here's the, to my knowledge, stock SecEmail_J.apk and SecExchange.apk pulled from my MF3 device. Their permissions are rw-r--r-- by the way. Not sure if they are what your looking for... but I figured I'd toss them up anyway just in case.

It depends, it probably wouldn't harm your device assuming your rooted and have a means of replacing system apps. Use Root Browser, or something like it to backup your existing APK's in /system/apps/ and copy these ones over and overwrite. Worse that may happen is your lose app access until you restore yours.

Not all my emails are Gmail and I don't want to have to use multiple apps
Well I just tried overwriting mine and it didnt work. After a restart, the icon appears for the new app but when I click on it it just hangs on a white screen and then says the program has stopped. I'm guessing that the '.odex' files for the apps have something to do with this. Anyone have any idea what I could do to get this working?
Do I need the .odex files from you as well?
So actually, I just deletedt he .odex files and restarted. The program works now. HOWEVER, its very strange. I do not see any difference between this new one and my old one!
The icon on this one is different, which is strange considering the icon on my wifes is the asme as my old one. The program version is '4.2' which is the same as my wifes. However when I go to settings for my wifes and setting on my 'new' one, my new one is the same as my old one and my wifes is a completely different layout!
One last thing... I realized that even my old email and exchange files are the same version number as the newest. Whats the deal here? It is a different file that controls the email and email settings?

New to S4

How's it going? I am upgrading to the S4 coming from the e4gt on Thursday. I've flashed just about everything there is for the e4gt, but would like to know what is recommended for starting out with this phone. What recovery do you recommend? I've downloaded the cf autoroot which I plan on using, and also the cwm jfltespr 6.0.3.6. Is this the best route for getting started? Thanks in advance.
Welcome over bt.
If you're going to stay on 4.2 then TWRP 2..5.0.2 has proven best for me and most others. TWRP-Recovery-jfltespr-2.5.0.2
If you're going to jump in to 4.3 (and I suspect you will) then use Philz CWM based recovery. philz_touch_5.18.2-jfltespr.tar
Just know that if you take the OTA or Odin 4.3 there is NO going back to 4.2 because of the Knox bootloader.
You can however run 4.3 on 4.2 firmware (non Knox tripped bootloader).
Many of the usual Sammy stuff caveats are the same. biggest difference is that Kernels are seperated from Recoveries. Making it easy to mix and match.
Flashing is a breeze, developers here are great - many came from the e4gt and S3. Same with the contributors and others.
Take some time to read through the posts and you'll soon get a good handle on it.
Have fun!
Hey, i remember you. It's great to see you here. How do I avoid the ota? Can I freeze system updates in tb or for toolbox? Also, what rom do you recommend that I try first? I was looking at the carbon rom, but will try 4.2 first because it looks like they have the save data issues on 4.3 like the e4gt. I will miss all the guys on project x.

If you install a custom recovery and kernel you won't be able to take the OTA - it may download but shouldn't install. I use TB to freeze Sprint Installer and Sprint Zone. Sprint Installer is a really sneaky app - it goes out and grabs all their crapware and just loads it up!.
I'd recommend Any of the 4.2 ROMs if you'd like to mess around - Sac, Unknownforce, Negamann's and of course rujelus22's.
For 4.3 I'd say give those guys a go too; just be sure to do it without tripping the Knox counter - using custom recovery and flashing ROM that has the knox bootloader removed.
For CM/AOSP type there are some pretty good ones too.Carbon, Sniper and Garwynn have some builds up. I like to try them but I'm a TW guy - I have to have everything working flawlessly for business so even small things like no 4G, no sms or the like make using them for my daily driver still out of the question for now.

Is there a chance my phone will come with the 4.3 already installed?

A friend of mine just bought the S4 two days ago and maybe he was lucky but it was still on 4.2 But don't know if that's the case with all of them.

as @BIGSAMDA1ST said, there is that possibility. Really depends on the supplier and how deep their inventory is.
If is on 4.2, after initial setup it will surely try and update to 4.3 if you let it - I wouldn't. But that's just me. I'd keep it 4.2 and go the 'non-knox' route to 4.3.

Welcome!
I just got mine on Monday Pre Balck Friday Sale, been on E4GT bricked 3, 4th the power button broke and the E4GT was BO so the bumped me to GS3 was rooted running Cyan 11 4.4 kitkat, PA Gapps, Xposed 128 DPI then the Pre Sale .96 cent's upgraded to this GS4. Monday got it and a hour later the 4.3 OTA was pushed to the phone.
I do have to say this is a Big Learning Curve because a lot of the customization i was used to do on my phone is already stock on this phone.
Been researching trying to figure what exactly to do but also been running tests to see what improvements Sprint and or the phone has made for me. I agree with Leaderbuilder " I have to have everything working flawlessly for business so even small things like no 4G, no sms or the like make using them for my daily driver still out of the question for now".
Everything has seemed to be running great my wife upgraded from Galaxy S "GB" love ginger just not as a OP. Spending a lot of time finding how things work for her and have yet to set my phone up or let it settle in. I say all this to say "what I've read" in all different posts is there is possibly 1 stable 4.4 rom and just now trying to compare the benefit for me rooting. I know removing bloatware but it doesn't seem to be messing the phone up like it did on E4GT, battery life? What I've seen this is pretty good. So take your time get your phone and get used to it I think those of us who came from E4GT was used to having a "fairly good" phone and rooting to make it better however this seems to be at a different level.
I just moved from the Epic 4G to an S4. Still really missing my slide-out keyboard...
I bought my S4 a week ago and it came with 4.2.2. I had NO clue about the Knox BS, and doing a quick Google for 4.3 issues did not bring it up, so I took the OTA update. BIG mistake... Especially since I need to root to run ARLiberator.
Thankfully, my Sprint dealer is great, and after finding they could not roll it back, gave me a direct exchange to a new S4 with 4.2.2. If they would not have done that, I would have exchanged it for a white one to get back to 4.2.2.
Sooo, to sum it up, as of yesterday, it was possible to still get an S4 with 4.2.2 without Knox on it.

Chalk it up to me being an old 48 gray haired (although consider myself pretty good searcher) What exactly is Knox and why/not want or want it?What is the issue with taking the OTA update? Layman's terms? My sprint store has really cool tech's but they know nothing about rooting and all different issues. Always like playing with my phone for a bit and never get pissed if I get an issue they can't resolve.
Should I not have done the OTA update? I'm trying to determine if I actually want to root or not because things have seemed good so far.
Main 4.4 item i wanted was "OK Google" but I've got that on my stock phone, sure 128 dpi would be great but if it really worth it for me? I'm still out to lunch on that one.

Are you saying you can't root it because of the update? I believe you still can.

The OTA update installs the Knox boot loader which cannot be rolled back. Once on it, you are on it for good, at least at present.
Knox adds a tattle-tale, so that if you root in the conventional, "fully rooted" manner, install a custom recovery, rom, or kernel, it will trip a flag, titled "Knox Warranty Void" which cannot, at present, be reset. which also breaks certain functionality in the phone. If you don't care about tripping this flag, it looks like you can still mod your phone as before.
There is a way to partially root in spite of Knox, without tripping the flag, but this method may open your phone up in ways you don't want to do. This is still under investigation.
Personally, I did not want a non-resetable flag telling Sprint/Samsung that I had modded my phone... That in itself was enough to make me return the phone.
Thank you for explaining now you have given me more to think about. Why do they care since warranties still cover rooting? Also makes me have something else to add to the puzzle do I root or not. Most things I was rooting for are now stock so I will continue to think about now knowing about the Knox.
Hello BTVOLTA...looking fwd to being here as well. Coming from the E4GT myself this evening and am looking forward to the stuff this thing has the ability to do:thumbup:

Well the knox bootloader is big if you are worried about warranty issus and if may need to run 4.2 ROMs.
If you don't think you ever will have either of those situations then that shouldn't matter.
Knox also does have some cool stuff for the corporate world - high security container for applications etc. It's essentially a secure 'sandbox'. I think you'll find many more corps. insisting on an using it. I know my brothers company gave him an S4 with knox for just that reason - secure email/CRM container and connection. This guy had the need too.
But for me I really am pissed that, if needed, I could not set my device to factory original.
Just one more thing an entity will use to keep from supporting a hardware problem they should own by blaming me.
I've had phones with bad radios (GPS part) that needed warranty replacement and one time was told no because I had a custom ROM and the problem was my ROM or my fault for 'destroying' the chip. I promplty went back around the corner flashed a stock .tar and walked back in and proved it to be the hardware.
All that being said this is so far the best phone I've had. And the developers and support folks here are great.
Welcom over y'all and have some fun.
Just got mine and I guess while I was looking foe a case they pushed the update while setting up my s4.
Any advice on what to do?
Depending on the inventory your new one may come with MF9. If so you can just use cf-autoroot to root install a custom recovery and go from there. There is a thread on how to update that firmware (modem and radio) without tripping the knox counter.
To keep it from updating don't take any 'Sprint Firmware updates' during install. You can root right away and then use Titanium to freez the sprint installer and sprint zone to keep the update at bay.
If it comes with MJA you can still root and then install custom recovery. You will just not be able to run a 4.2 ROM stock (using Odin).
Yeah thats the issue part says dont care othet says dont need security issue but its nice to be safe amd secure. Bricked 3 E4GT andb4th power button broke but all covered by insurance when they upgraded me to GS3 and then I needed a new phone and got the Gs4.
My 3 was running Cyan 11 w/4.4 kitkat and Xposed 128 dpi. I have almost everything I was used to with root with this stock except the 128 dpi so Im trying to figure if I just need to play it safe for a while or not.
I'm irritated by the play store every time I try to install with it pulling 1 of 3 error codes ever since upgraded to 4.3 so part of me wants to just root to 4.4 since I know how it runs but Ive only found 1 stable 4.4 available and not too familiar of roms since my experience is from E4GT and Gs3 days.
My first thoughts are if I know I may have issues and create more issues with my phone with Knox then why even bother?
Last clarification if I root Knox then acts like the old odin counter and or it also will keep me from flashing unroot back to stock? Kinda if can't reboot back to stock then if I softbrick and need help im on my own where as in past I still got help from sprint tech support and insurance because they couldn't prove I rooted an csused the issue.
Knox makes it permanent like water damage sticker with iOs?

I was all over it, made sure they didn't push the update. I now have it frozen, and I flashed beanstalk. It's running great so far. It seems though that none of the nice features that come with this phone are on this ROM. Next I will look to flash another kernel and then comadose. BTW, the recovery I installed B is Philz. It appears that if you want to use some of the nice stock options, probably need flash a TW ROM.
