Why the RAM on Android is only 400＋M?

Some of the ram is used by the GPU, some is used to run the OS, and I think the radio takes some too. After the GPU and radio take their share, you end up with like 411 mb.
Then Android itsself needs some to run, and then there's your launcher and any apps you have installed. Basically what you see is what you get.
The good news is, Android manages memory differently than WinMobile. Android apps are kept in RAM to aid in fast loading, resulting in less free RAM, but an overall faster, smoother experience. I say judge not by the amount of unused memory, but by how smooth the experience. I would stay away from task killers, except for System Panel and AutoKiller Memory Optimiser. Just find the level in Autokiller that works best for you, and if you're about to use a memory hungry app, end all apps with System Panel's End All widget.

hey,
i'm using GingerDX v.010 and i'm only getting about 24mb ram, can anyone help me boost the ram so the phone doesn't lag?

Uninstall EVERY system ap that you don´t need and use the Supercharger script(Just search for it)

I used autokiller memory optimizer n set it to agressif, n i get over 70mb free.

how can i use them when the market wont download anything?

You can get the supercharger ONLY from xda, and serach for autokiller on SlideMe.

NEVER use task killers. They just make everything worse!

Usually I find that the lower the free ram is, the snappier the phone is.

Tips & Tricks To Increase Our Phone's Speed

There's a lot of ways to improve the speed and performance on our X8/W8, so here I am, sharing it to all my XDA buddies!

- Overclock Your Phone (X)
To speed up your phone. I recommend scaling to 729 mhz.
Doixanh's Module
- Use RAM Manager
To optimize your RAM. I recommend using option Balance (More Free Memory) for normal use, and Hard Gaming option for gaming.
Don't use it with Supercharger!

To increase SD card speed. I use SD-Booster to set this.

- Increase VM Heap Size
To increase performance. I didn't do this, because it really drains battery life.
Go to settings, click Cyanogenmod Settings, click Performance, and click VM Heap Size.
32M - More Battery Saving, Less Performance
48M - Less Battery Saving, More Performance
- Do not use task killers
If you use one, it will cause unstability to the phone. Only use one when some app is faulty or misbehaving. Android will manage its memory on its own.

2) Increase Or Reduce Texture
To increase gaming performance

- Use Callibrated Render Effect For Screen (X)
To save battery and increase performance
To do that, go to Settings, to Cyanogenmod Settings, to Interface, click Screen Render Effect, and click Callibrated N1 Cool.
- Use A Custom Kernel (X)(!)
To increase performance a lot.
For the collection of kernels, click here.
- Odex A ROM
To increase internal phone memory,speed up booting time and apps.
To odex, click here.
- Use A Good Scrolling Theme (X)
A badly created theme will slow down your phone's scrolling
- Enable Jit (X)
To increase performance. Do it in Performance Settings.
- Enable KSM (Kernel Samepage Merging).
Make sure you enable this setting too (only available on some kernels) through Performance settings.
- Freeze Unused System Apps (X)
Do this to, ex: DSP Manager,Gmail,Youtube..blahblahblah.
Use ROM Toolbox or some other apps. Search in Market "Freeze Apps".
- Don't Install Too Many Unused Apps (X)
It will eat your phone memory
- Use Swap (X)
Increase RAM memory. Download Swapper or Swapper 2 from Market to swap. First unlock bootloader and install a custom kernel. Don't swap your more than 128MB for best results.
- Use Supercharger
Increase RAM memory. Depends on your phone manufacturing date.
Don't use with RAM Manager!
To supercharge, click here.
Read the instructions there. I am not very sure with this one...
- Clear SD Cache Files (X)
This will improve the speed of your phone.

This will make your phone much faster. Click Here
- If you can, full-wipe your phone.

Go to settings, click Cyanogenmod settings, click interface, click Render Effect, finally, click Callibrated N1 Cool.
The color might not be as nice as before, but it really boosts performance. Note that the settings goes off after reboot.

Hi , how much ram you max get free ?
Say also
* what rom
* tweaks used
* swap or not
* what kernel
For me it's Reavaluton v3 rom and nAa 11 , NO swap... , I get around 105-110 free ram .. And tweaks I use
* Supercharger V8
* X8 Hotfix
* Odexed

I don't have screenshot, but I remember that was around 95Mb
-MiniCM 2.1.8
-nAa kernel v10
-No SWAP
-Autokiller on Strict mode installed.

I have 3gb ram free... added more ram to my x8

Most of the time I have between 30-45 MB free RAM and I do not use swap and have a lot of applications, few widgets...

I am using advanced task killer, have a widget on home screen, which kills apps and displays the information about free RAM, and it shows what I mentioned.
I will take a look at the app Fast Reboot, thanks.

Maximum i ever get was 117 on stock 2.1 by killing every single app

i tried it,, first it ask how much swap do you want,, its 200MB by defalut, and check "apply on boot"option
after save, this app create one file in your sdcard "swap.swp" its 200MB size
i am feeling a bit different from my x8,, its quite fast..
but i still dont understand how it works

That 200mb is "virtual ram"...it means your phone uses that allocated 200mb to increase the amount of ram your phone can have...but be warned, increasing the SWAP size will shorten your SD Card's lifespan...200mb should be ok...don't go overboard like I did and put 1000mb(1GB) ....but if you already enabled compache in CyanogemMod Settings/Performance, then using SWAP is pointless

[Q] S4 RAM Question

Just have a quick question iv'e heard that on the s4 that touchwiz takes up a lot of ram from the 2gb available does that mean if i install another ROM will give me more ram to work with ?

Yes ,but Android is not Windows. Free RAM is wasted RAM. Without touchwiz and the Samsung bloat give you more space on infernal SD. If Android need RAM so the low mem killer kicks in and clean unused apps.

Depends on how many apps are open and what rom because if have a custom boalt free rom you will not have any laggs but if you have a device filled with apps like sammy rom you sometimes might have some laggs
