Note 3 Failure: Problems with Kernel and Recovery - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I don't post here often, but I'm not new to this. It was through this forum that I first started rooting with mfy s3.
I just got a note 3 through Sprint. I've gotten used to getting off the grid, so I immediately jumped to root it. I decided on Jellybomb after reading some reviews. Then I downloaded everything necessary to make the jump: Odin, 1.85 and 3.09, jellybomb, cwm 6.0, twrp 7, auto-root, and the original roms in case I had to hop back.
First I went with Chainfires auto-root. I didn't seem to have any problem flashing that. The problem came with flashing twrp and the new rom. I can't remember which one was giving me trouble (I've been fighting it almost a week now). Somehow some way the phone has been stuck in an autoboot that says "seandroid not enforcing" and either "warranty bit: recovery" or "warranty bit: kernel". I tried new kernels. I tried things in different order. I can get into recovery but only after going immediately after autoroot. Even there you have a broken android.
Please help. I've been without a phone for a week.

This one is the International Note 3 forum.
You should ask for actual details in the specific Sprint Note 3 forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint
You should also pay more attention to the fact that the questions should be posted in the Q&A subforum.

Thanks

Cheers! It looks from your sig though that you have found a work around on your international version. Are they really that different, that need entirely separate instructions. Obviously I downloaded all of the suggested software for Sprint and followed Sprint suggested, but I'm frustrated because I simply don't understand how I could do something the same way everyone else did and yet have it fail on me like this.

I am having the exact same problem...at first i was able to flash 'openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-hltetmo.img.tar and it would boot my phone back to normal. I have now run into this problem again and my first original fix isn't working anymore. If I can figure out a way I will definitely let you know!

I figured out what to do, use odin 3.9 and flash this, it took about 15 minutes to go through the whole process. Once my phone boot up it froze at the T-Moble logo or whatever, so I waited like 20 minutes and then powered it off, went into recovery and did a factory reset which then solved all my problems. I lost root, but no big deal to me. Better than buying a new phone!!! Btw the only place I could find this file is off sammobile.com. You have to sign up for a free membership thing but at least they give you the stock firmware.

[Q] Canadian Variant [SM-N900W8] Stuck In Boot Loop!

I've been reading through other threads here on XDA about a common boot loop issue that N900T users are experiencing, but nowhere was it mentioned that the Canadian variant users had a similar problem, but I do.
I was wondering if there were any other SM-N90028 users out there that were stuck in a boot loop?
Here is my situation:
I have a Canadian SM-N900W8 (it is, also a Qualcomm LTE version) and I'm in a boot loop... it all started when I tried to restore a Stock-Rooted Rom with TWRP.
I can't, however get it out, and I've tried all of the versions of TWRP, I've also used odin like 30 times... nothing.
I successfully restored a Rooted stock ROM through TWRP, but it wasn't until I re-installed a factory un-rooted one that things got ugly..
So I was thinking about this and perhaps the cause of this is KNOX... since the first thing I did when I rooted my phone initially was uninstall KNOX and all of its files. I know these didn't carry over when I did a TWRP backup, which is perhaps why my restore of that backup worked the first time. The second time, I just went and downloaded everything stock and used Odin, and that's when the bootloop occurred.
if anyone knows of a way to solve this, I'd be forever grateful!
I really hope I will be able to fix this...
Not to sound.to xdaish...but dude seriously this topic.is all.over the n3 forums. Have a.look and you will find tons of info.
Also...good idea to.read prior to flashing..if you had you would have know not to restore with twrp since it causes bootloops.
Just trying to you some friendly advice.

Thank you, but I've read them all and most are regarding the n900t, I felt it appropriate to ask about the n900w8 variant.
Also, I know that would have been better, but it's too late for that now. I just thought I'd share my experiences here with this issue so that others will know better.
So I tried a different stock ROM, and with the latest version of Odin, but it still is in a boot loop.
However there is one difference; this time it will boot past the Samsung logo and into android, but then a window will pop up saying "Process system isn't responding" and ask me to wait for it to respond or close it. Regardless of what I select, it will end up rebooting seconds later.
In the very short time that everything stays booted for, I can access the two pull-down menus from the top, but selecting anything will yield me no results.
Perhaps this can tell us more about this issue?

[Q] Help me unbrick my S4

Here's the story:
I got my S4 late last year, and decided to use qbking77's root technique to root my phone. After the 4.3 update, I no longer had root. Also, I had the wifi issue plaguing many S4 users at the moment. So I thought maybe re-rooting would solve my problem, but apparently qbking's method no longer works. So, being a crafty individual, I decided to revert to 4.2.2. I downloaded L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar from samsung-updates and used ODIN to load it. Soon after starting the download, I received a FAIL notification in ODIN and an error in the download screen on my phone as follows:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1
I have tried many versions of ODIN but cannot get the file to load. I really don't want to deal with Sprint over this matter, so any help would be appreciated.
[I am also downloading the 4.3 version from samsung-updates at the moment, but I have to get to bed, so I will try tomorrow.]

you CANNOT got back to MF9 or ANYTHING before MJA.
Grab the MK2 tar (OR MJA) - THERY'RE HERE LOOK.
Flash that in PC Odin and you'll be fine
Spend some time and read and you'll be Okay.

THANK you for reporting back! That is what this community is all about.
Since you have the lates firmware (MJA or MK2) you can now go root, install recovery (via PC Odin or goomanager) and then flash what you wish.
BUT please take some time to read through the developers OPs and followup posts - different ROMs require different recoveries and wipe methods. Recoveries can be switched in recovery too.
Good luck
Hi guys,
I came across this post while searching XDA as I am getting the same error (SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1) when I try to install "L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar" via various versions of ODIN.
A little background on my phone:
Sprint GS2 L720 that I bought used. The phone gets stuck on the yellow Sprint screen during boot-up. I don't have the whole story but apparently he tried to flash the phone and did so with the incorrect ROM. Rather than try to fix the phone he decided to sell it for cheap so he found a sucker (me) to buy it hoping that I could fix it. I don't have a problem getting the phone into download mode, just can't get the TAR file to install correctly. Since I've never had this phone in working condition I don't know what firmware is on the phone.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb or basic question but I'm completely new at this so any help you can give me in laymen's terms (or links to threads I should read or files I should install) would be greatly appreciated.
LeaderBuilder- You mentioned installing recovery via ODIN? Would you mind elaborating on this. I Googled "Install Recovery with ODIN S4" and came up with videos and links using ClockworkMod and TWRP but I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to. I just hesitant because I don't want to make matters worse or hardbrick my phone.
Anybody willing to respond and help me out- THANKYOU!!!
You install recoveries by using tar files of them

You are trying to install an older version of the stock tar. Once your phone has been upgraded to MJA or newer you cannot install older tar files. You can download the newest stock tar for are phone from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443
Install using odin 3.07 or newer. Good luck.
Thanks Cruise,
I read through all of the posts on the link that you sent and according to the original poster, flashing that TAR will trip the KNOX which sounds undesirable and potentially dangerous (at least according to the second poster). Is this my best best or only option? Sorry if that's a dumb question but like I said, I'm new to all of this and I really don't want to hard brick my phone. Ideally I'd like to get this to boot properly and bring it back to stock but it sounds like bringing it back to stock might not be an option at this point. Thanks again for your input and the link!

How is it dangerous to trip knox? I personally have it tripped and have really ran into any problems once I rooted. I couldn't install kernels for some reason but I think that was something o was doing wrong .

And it will NOT trigger Knox because it is a stock unmodified tar straight from Samsung/Sprint.

I got news for you, your Knox is already tripped. If the previous owner had already tried to root and install a custom rom that ship has sailed. Installing a stock tar does not trip Knox, installing a custom recovery does.

Use this older file on odin.
It's said pass so it's complete. Either use the older version hey_joe has posted and untick auto reboot. Or try this way >
Once it's rooted and said pass. Turn the phone off, and try and go into recovery then reboot the device. It should boot into Android.

But I was determined to get on here and say a thank you to you guys for your most excellent advice.
Although now that I've done that I see I need to enter more captchas just to post, I could be here a while at this rate.
In any case, thank you hey_joe and radicalisto.
Also if anyone else comes across this problem all I did was follow the advice in hey_joe's thread and got my phone back...

When you use a custom recovery or a custom kernel you will get that, it's normal, means you aren't using a Samsung signed recovery/kernel. - the custom kernel comes permissive by default.

Like a couple other guys on this thread, I also became a member here purely to say thanks for the fix provided by hey_joe.
If anyone else with the same problem is reading this, just get the Odin version hey_joe posted on the first page.
Remember that you need to go into download mode (Volume Down + Power + Home) again to escape that 3-color, 3-line SEANDROID screen-lockup before you can interface with the older/better version of Odin.
Just adding this comment as it took me a few minutes to understand why Odin couldn't see the phone again. (Why yes, I *am* new to this whole rooting business) ...
All is good now and I confirmed the phone is now rooted with Root Check from Google Play.
Now to delete all this bloatware, specifically the pesky CloudAgent app that kept screwing up my ability to work with the Gallery. The popup "CloudAgent has stopped" has been the bane of my Note 3 existence for the last few days ...

I had exactly same problem on the same device, and you guys saved me !! Thanks a lot!!
I have the same thing but my phone works. It only tells me that it's not enforcing seandroid when I go into recovery. Is that normal or did my recovery not install correctly? I can use it to flash files, do backups and such so I think it's working normally. The only issue is that I coulnd't get TWRP to work, I had to find the apk on my Note 2 and flash CWM Touch to have custom recovery and every time I go to reboot from there it says that it needs to fix my root. I haven't seen anything on it, so if I am in the wrong location please direct me to where I need to go. Rooting and all isn't new to me, been doing it since I got my EVO 4G when it was released, but I am by far no expert. This KNOX crap has me kinda flustered. The root appears to stick, I can use ROM Toolbox and do what I want it to do, root checker says I have root and all, just curious about the seandroid stuff and saw this post.

Help please

So I was trying to help a friend flash stock using Odin because his phone app was being a piece of crap, he was on a CM 11 nightly and, well, long story short I almost bricked his phone not knowing there is a limit on how many times you can flash a Samsung device using Odin because of the yellow triangle. I can't use triangle away because it's the CM ROM on a CM kernel, I was able to get rid of the softbrick by using a older CM ROM on his SD card, this wouldn't be a problem if his phone app was still working, his WiFi was working and if his sound was working, but it's not. So to recap and for the question, Samsung is stupid, and can anyone help?
Thanks in advanced

I can't use triangle away because it's the CM ROM on a CM kernel, I was able to get rid of the softbrick by using a older CM ROM on his SD card, this wouldn't be a problem if his phone app was still working, his WiFi was working and if his sound was working, but it's not. So to recap and for the question, Samsung is stupid, and can anyone help?
Thanks in advanced

First thing you have to do for anyone to help you is,provide which build you were on and which stock rom you were trying to flash. There are tons of people here with great knowledge if you can be real specific.

So you wanna go to complete stock on a sprint s4?

Fairly sure there is no limit to the amount of times you can flash using Odin. There is a counter but no limit

Sorry, Samsung isn't stupid or they wouldn't just magically be a $250+billion dollar company that has been around for 76 years.
Because you jumped in and were unsuccessful with what you were doing doesn't constitute failure on their part.
How about taking that phone - S4 back to bone stock. ALL the answers on how to do that are here. In fact in the last couple days I've personally given instructions on how to do that for a number of people here in the help section. Do some searching and reading and you'll find your answers.
It always helps to come to a manufacture's section and say how sh**y they are. Makes those of us who choose to use and support them feel ever so helpful.
Ok sorry should've been more specific, I'm not new to these forums I was just in a hurry, also seriously guys I'm just frustrated I know Samsung is not stupid you don't have to post their history, they're awesome it's just dumb that they have a limit, and yes if you install the latest stock Sprint update (the one I did before I rooted and rom'd his phone) there wouldn't be a thing such as triangle away. Anyway on Odin it says it passed when flashing stock (the firmware that comes with the phone) but it does it in 4 seconds, and when his phone boots up and it just restores CM, so far everything we've tried either softbricks it or restores CM. Is there anything that completely and I mean completely restores this phone

Where are you getting this idea there is a limit on Odin flashes?
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
There is no limit, as mentioned already, with Odin.
I've used it probably a hundred times since I got my S4. I know others have used it more.
Take some time, look through the Q&A/help forum and you'll see some posts I've helped others with, in the last 24hours alone, on how to get back to stock.
Edit:
Okay read this post. It'll get you to stock. Just read the instuctions on how to do it.
Ok I'll try it thanks for tolerating me I can be hard to understand when panicking

Glad you got it working and THANK YOU for posting back - that is what helps the community.
I understand the panic too. Especially when things are f'd up.
But if there is one valuable lesson I've learned in my half century of life; if you can just pause, relax and step back, many problems are easily resolved. And better yet more avoided by haste.
Good luck with the new phone setup.
OK one more quick thing, we flashed it successfully but now it won't boot its been over an hour after we flashed and its stuck on the Sprint logo

You can first boot to stock recovery (power on + volume up) and choose a 'factory reset'. That often clears stuff up pretty well
Or
Try and PC Oding a stock MK2 kernel. Then battery pull and restart after. Saw this on a few phones
I'll have to search to find it but it's here somewhere.

Trying to root, stuck at the first hurdle

Hi guys
I have a spare phone now my son upgraded, the S5 SM-G901F. I thought it wound be fun to install another software, possibly more up to date. So I first set out to root it but I haven't played around much with this sort of thing for long while.
I googled and found it seemed to be Odin to use so I downloaded 3.10. Also downloaded cf root. I went into download mode and when I plugged it in, the light in Odin lit up showing successfully connected. When I added the cf file and clicked start it went through some steps but stuck at Recovery. Img and wouldn't progress further.
I tried multiple times, tried a different cable and USB port and also Odin 3.07 and a different cf file even though I think it was the same one but from a different site. All no better.
Originally I bought it a few years back, used from a colleague. I think it was a carrier phone, EE iirc, and I had to get a code to unlock the SIM to use with mine. Maybe that also means it's software is locked?
Any help much appreciated
Thanks, marc
No one guys?
Please help

well to be honest, i would need to spend some time, "Googling" your model .... . I believe , your S5 is a Dev phone, meaning, it was not set up for any carrier, just for running demo's and such. IF this is true, I have no true answer for you.
Odin yes, you need that, that is true! (Believe 3.07, 3.09 and 3.10 work the best for these phones. Had tried a very newer version, several month back, and it did not do the job.. something like 3.14 or 16)
I recommend going to Sam Mobile, and run your model # through them. They will give you all the info about your model and possibly the latest firmware for it.
Sorry that I can not give you all that you are needing. I just don't know a ton about those S5 Plus models. (( I had to even look 'em up too) the plus has a slight better chip was well as graphics, but again, I dont know of any that actually work on a modern carrier like sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile , etc.)
Thanks for the reply mate.
It definitely isn't a Dev phone, my colleague definitely had it on contact from a carrier initially.
I hadn't actually realised or noticed it being a Plus model as some sites mention the Plus and some don't.
Any other help from anyone appreciated

OK, Was only going off your model # you had given.
Did check... Odin and a good copy of CF auto root... That should be that.
Then of course, get away from a really old non sucure os (6.01 MM was their last made) .
Other than those 2 pieces, you should be good to root
Not pushing, or anything but LineageOS is rather good and does run well on these!
Plus, get a monthly security injection!

That's the problem as i mentioned in the first post, I've tried with odin and cf root and it doesn't work. That's why i posted on here. I wondered whether the phone was locked to the carrier.

Well, I would have to say NOPE!
Well only trying to keep your Q, on the top, so folks that might know, could help!
BTW, when I looked your model up, totally different CPU and GPU, which might need a different CF auto root zip, or a different one to actually work... Since hardware is different.
Just guessing on that, but, could be wrong. Rather busy at the moment, but will look up your specs again, and see if I find something for ya.
Mean time, Hopefully someone could chime in and point you towards the correct path to take...
OH
Q- What sort Recovery do you currently have? (Stock or custom (e.g. TWRP))
Might want to check for one for your phone.
I would actually start with TWRP, see what they have for ya.
( Will need Odin for this! BUT, once you have a Recovery in/on the phone, then you could use Magisk to root ot try CF and see 8f that works for you (I use Majisk) Plus add in the fact that you should make a Back up, of your current system! In case of issues, you can always jump back to Stock. )

Sorry, that I have not gotten back sooner. Issues to deal with.... Just like many others these days...
That said, I take it, that you have a custom Recovery, and also Root?
Hope so, if not, I'm still here for ya

Cheers mate. So, some progression.
Firstly i didn't have a custom recovery or root. I was getting stopped at the first hurdle.
So, i figured it had something to do with it using a carrier firmware, EE, in the UK. So i found a stock European firmware and successfully used odin to flash it. Then i flashed CF root and TWRP. All good.
So with new confidence i flashed Resurrection Remix Android 9. Although it seemed to have worked, each time i tried to complete set up, straight after imputting my gmail address, the screen was black. Not BSOD type though, if i pressed home it went back to the home screen to i just couldn't complete set up.
So i tried Lineage and that was a boot loop.
Not sure if part of the issue was Gapps but i was definitely using the correct version. ARM, Android 9, stock.
I gave up, reinstalled the stock Android marshmallow and rooted again and installed TWRP. that's where i am now.
Shame really as i fancied a more up to date OS.
Thanks, Marc

Wait, isn't what you were wanting?
Well at least you now have a Recovery installed! Now, with that of course you can now make a back up of your stock!!!
( other words,.. MAKE A BACK UP! That way, you only have to wipe the system, data, cache and BAM, in the Flash of zip, your back at square one...)
OK, not sure if you picked up a new info about LineageOS, across the pond....
But
They ran into some issues, (soon and hopefully sooner, it will be fixed). Now, after that, they will be dropping LineageOS 17.1 Official!! Yes, for Galaxy S5 too
So, keep an eye out for that, cause am in same Boat, waiting for the Official release.
( personal, I run LineageOS, Magisk (Root and some goodies.. Unfortunately I do tend to add Ggogle, but like Pico, nothing larger. Do flash a kernel also. That said, rather stable, and most everything works) at least for me.... Just waiting for Official 17.1 to roll out! (like just about anyone left that has these phones...)
