You should turn off Automatic Security Policy Updates in Settings -> General -> Security.
Uncheck Auto update Security and depending on your usage, disable or enable Via Wifi Only so that it doesn't constantly ask.
They could patch some KNOX stuff and certificates in these updates, so you wouldn't want it if you're rooted.

How to disable Firmware Updates on GTi9505 S4?

How can I DISABLE automatic installation of firmware updates to onto my phone?
I DO NOT want these firmware updates to be downloaded or installed automatically without my knowledge.
REASON >>> Because I want to look at the reviews from other S4 users to see how these firmware updates affect the phone"s performance, features, and etc....
So how can I disable these from automatically downloading and installing?
Also, not only the firmware updates, but "other" updates as well.
If possible, please attach a print screen on how to disable all updates.
Thanks

Just un-check auto update from Setting->about phone->software update.
In the UK those of us with Simfree BTU handset's don't have to worry about this, basically because we don't get any updates on our S4's :/

PTMCWeb is completely right. Hitting "Software Update" takes you to a Boolean"Update Now" popup with no other option than choosing Yes, No or Wifi. No option to defeat future updates is offered.
Going into developer mode doesn't seem to add any pertinent options either (correct me if I'm wrong).
Clearly, Samsung doesn't want you to be able to disable updates unless or until you root, which I'm doing this weekend on the basis of this thread.

S4 Keeps downloading Software Updates when Auto Updating is Unchecked

You know....I am soooooo fed up with this!!! and I need help.
I have auto-updating turned OFF and software scheduling updates OFF, and then now, I just connected to my Wifi connection and my phone started to download a 350MB software update bundle even though every AUTO Checking of Software Updates are TURNED OFF. I dont know why its still downloading updates when I have all of these disabled to automatically check for updates.
Please see print screens.
I DO NOT want ANY software updates to be downloaded especially I dont even know what updates they are.
Please help me on this. I want this to be disabled.
Just sick of this!!!!! I mean really....
Now, I do not really know what this 300MB update bundle was, but it wasnt the Android 4.3 update as I just checked.
I have no clue whatsoever on what updates were installed.
How can I check what updates were installed?
Thanks

If you have root you can disable Samsung updates by deleting FWUpgrade.apk and FotaClient.apk (and the odex files) with root explorer.

My phone is not ROOTED.
Can you post screenshots of this please on where I can find this in order to disable this?
I want to disable auto-updates because Im afraid it might "break" things.
Thanks, I would appreciate some print screens.
Will Android version 4.3 be downloaded automatically as well?
Now that, I will not mind if 4.3 would be installed automatically since I heard that should fix the "lag" issue on the screen on most S4 phones.

Ok, if I root my phone which I do not want to do then is there anyway to disable these updates?
I just want to conserve the phone storage space which is now approx. 8.36gb and therefore I do not want these updates.

Since your phone is factory stock an update wont break things.
Samsung updates are not to be feared.
And the updates. Dont waste space... as the software gets refines you get more.
I now have 9.1 gigs when I use to have 8giga when I just got the phone
Samsung is optimizing the software and it is getting slimmer.
Updates do not waste space.
So relax... it sounds like this is your first Samsung flagship.

You will get 4.3 automatically if you leave the software update feature on.
Samsung update services are decent.
For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was updated to 4.1.2 via OTA even tho it is considered an old phone from the Gingerbread 2.3.4 - 2.3.6 era. (FEB 2011)

Yes.
But my advice... leave auto update on.
If you tap the check for updates button you may see an update but it wont download because the update server space is full.
Your fear is understood but unnecessary.
Its best to let it download by itself over wifi.
When it is done it will ask you if you want to update... it will not reboot your phone without you knowing.... nor will it install new software without you knowing.

Sorry, but one more last question. I tend to turn off my WiFi on my S4 most of the time even when I am at home.
Now I enabled the Auto Updates as you recommended. But as most of the time, I have the WiFi OFF and only enable it when I need to.
Will that be OK for the updates?
So far, I did not get the Android 4.3 update.

3G strains the battery much more than wifi bro, leave wifi on if you can for better battery life. OTA`s can be downloaded on 3G but wifi is cheaper and faster. 4.3 isn`t out yet, will take another 2-3 months for the official one, leaks may come earlier.

As the user above says.
Leave wifi on for better battery life when you are at home.
If you turn off wifi and do not want the phone connected to the internet make sure you turn off mobile data as well.
With your internet service off: The update will just take longer. I am not sure the updater service downloads the data in pieces as a torrent client or download manager would do.
So its best to leave it on... go to sleep and wake up to see the notification that the update has been downloaded and ready for installation.

If you have problems after update, you can make factory reset, which will erase all personal data from the phone and fix the errors, keeping you with the lastest firmware. Now you can go to application manager/all apps and find SoftwareUpdate. Disable it and I think, you wont be able to update before enabling it again. No root needed to do this.

No you can't roll back as you would on a PC from the phone itself.
What you will have to do is download the version of firmware you want and like and use a PC based software called ODIN to re-flash the phone.
If you do this you can keep your old settings (it wont wipe your personal data) and "roll back" to a version you preffer.
However updates seldom if ever break things in my region. I do not know about other regions.
For example: I keep my S4 STOCK STOCK STOCK so I have never had the need to roll back any update.. and nothing so far has broken in the 4 updates I have received over wifi.
Other people may have other experiences, possibly bad ones with apps crashing or the phone being slow.
So what they normally do in such a negative case is a Factory reset.
A factory reset will have the new firmware but it removes all your settings and downloaded apps and presents the phone as if it just came from the factory.
Your settings and apps will then be reloaded once you log into Google and / or your Samsung account.
So relatively speaking it is not a major hassle.

[TUT] How to disable root checks for OTA updates (OTA with status = Modified)

Yes, apparently it's possible.
You will need:
-Galaxy S3 (tested on I9305)
-System status = Modified (obviously...)
-Secret Codes Revealer app (from Google Play)
1. Open the Secret Codes Revealer.
2. List Codes -> Launch custom code.
3. Enter 8736364 -> Launch code.
4. Menu -> Input MasterKey.
5. Enter "rooting" -> OK.
6. Rooting Off -> OK.
7. Go to your Phone Settings menu, and check for updates
We have similar threads already guiding users on how to unroot for stock OTA updates. Please check the stickies.
This is not about unrooting - this is about enabling OTA downloads on rooted phones (AKA overriding the root check).
Does it work ? like for real ?

But it's still rooted with all the privileges right ?
Still rooted (& root working), still showing Modified. Right now, I don't have any update available for my I9305, but it's definitely checking for updates.
I don't know if the FOTA engine will actually be able to apply a downloaded update to a rooted system partition - but it's a good way for obtaining OTA packages.
BTW, someone with a BTU I9300 please test - a slightly newer version of 4.3 is shipping via OTA (same PDA, new CSC, new modem compared to the Vodafone release)
Hmmm. You cannot start a tutorial with "apparently". It should be fully tested before its a tutorial.
Also, accepting ota updates on rooted devices is extremely bad practice so you should put a disclaimer in about that....
And also recommend only rooted stock (odexed) users do this

I stand corrected on my previous reply before however having tried this... it doesn't work for me at all. Nothing happens after I inputted the code stated by the OP. And like rootSU said it's basically a bad practice on rooted phones users since you already know that rooting will limit if not make your phone make use of the ability to get OTA updates normally.

[Q] Any downside to rooting other than warranty/knox?

I am considering rooting my Canadian (Rogers) Note 3 (SM-N900W8) in order to defeat the ludicrous SD-Card crippling brought by the latest Kitkat 4.4.2 software update. I'm aware that by doing so the Knox 0x1 counter will void the warranty. What I'd like to know is whether there are any additional negative results besides this well-known one.
For example I've seen inconsistent reports of the Screen Mirroring function being disabled as soon as the device is rooted. Some claim it is more related to the presence of a custom kernel, recovery or ROM, while others insist that merely rooting with everything stock was enough to disable screen mirroring.
If I do nothing more than use CF-Autoroot as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423
...no custom recovery, kernel or ROM, do I risk any undesirable repercussions other than the warranty and Knox issue? Will screen mirroring or any other functions work worse than they did before?
Thanks for any help...
Rooting won't break any functionality of the phone except the security it was meant for i.e the secure container ( and of course, depending on who you ask, warranty ). Problems you mentioned are probably related to custom roms themselves.

Thanks for your reply... and will it also not interfere with any potential future over-the-air updates that might come along, be it a 4.4.3 update or a more trivial software patch to fix an issue that gets released? I realize that a major enough OTA update might un-root the phone which is fine.. I just wouldn't want to brick or lose access to updates because of root. Would they continue to be accessible, or would I likely have to first un-root manually to enable them?
Thanks again...
Yes you can not OTA update on the rooted phone.
You can unroot and apply the OTA update.
Or use the fake system status option in the Wanam.

Thanks... if memory serves (been a while for me since last rooted device) all that is necessary to unroot is to run the administrative option from within the Superuser app itself, to remove the SU binary completely.. correct? And then to re-root just repeat the previous CF-Autoroot steps and regain SU?

question about running samsung security updates

My phone is only rooted, I have ignored the security updates since I got it thinking I might loose my root. Is this the case or will it still be rooted and do I need these updates anyway? Also, anyone know of a good rom for the att version that wont kill the battery and has a better camera than the stock one. I sure miss my s3 camera app that was in one of the carbon roms I had on it it was awesome. btw the phone was towel rooted.
ignores it because it has to do with Knox, disable it is better from settings / security

I don't think Knox can be disabled or removed without issues. Novice level answer though.
