format () expects 5 args, got 4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I was trying to upgrade my i337m rom today and was greeted with this error format () expects 5 args, got 4 on all of them except for a 4.4.2 version of Gummy.
Kinda sucks. No matter what I do now, Odin back to stock etc I cannot get around it...

I have no idea what Philz is?
I downloaded the rom, installed it to external sd (and internal storage), CW in, clear cache, dalvik and wipe, error, error, error except the Gummy (which I hate, I cannot stand AOSP )
I will dig around on Philz

The reason you're getting an error is because your recovery conforms to the new scripting commands and the zip you're flashing is using the old method.
Philz has an advanced version of the recovery you're using. There's a checkbox to allow use of the old method and then it'll flash fine.

[Q] Nexus4: 4.2.2 won't install for me.

So I have tried a few things now. One was dialing *#*#checkin#*#* and then getting the update OTA, but when the phone rebooted to update it went into CWM recovery and asked for a confirmation (which I gave it), and then it came up with an error. I then tried doing it manually by downloading the zip from several different sources thinking maybe the file was bad. I had no luck with this either. Then as a final resort, I made a clockwork backup and then flashed stock kernel and did a factory reset on the phone and tried installing the zip. I got the SAME error. I'm pretty tech savvy but when it gets into codes and stuff I'm stuck. Can anybody tell me what this message means?

I did. I flashed stock kernel then did a full wipe of the phone to factory settings and it still wouldn't install which I think is really weird.

[Q] Cannot Install Custom Rom On i9505, Help Please?

Hi,
I am pretty new to custom roms ect, I have tried installing Battery King v8.2, Vision X II, Carbon Nightly and Google Edition. All of those roms are compatible with i9505, I have also tried using both recoveries CWM 6.0.3.1 and TWRP 2.6.3.1 and on each i wiped data, cache, dalvik, battery stats and system, then after each rom installed successfuly i wiped the dalvik cache again and rebooted to find the stock rom (Prerooted).
Any advice to what i am doing wrong?
I am currently downloading the official stock rom for my phone now to see if that makes a difference.

I had the same, I forgot to flash a custom recovery. Samsung's stock recovery will only flash/install Samsung signed ROMS. Flash a custom recovery like CWM, TWRP or Philz (I'm using philz). Then boot into your recovery and flash your ROMS.
If you have done that, ensure the MD5 of your ROM is correct.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, i have installed both CWM then TWRP but havent tried Philz (i will try that now) but how do you mean ensure the MD5 of my rom is correct? How would i do this? Because i have downloaded the roms from the i9505 sections therefore i know they are compatible if that is what you mean.

Ok, just checking the basics first, I made that mistake, TWRP didn't flash correctly and I was on stock recovery!
the MD5 is a unique code attributed to the file. It will be given with the download and look something like (as an example only) 1565fs15f1s65f1w8e1wf8f1sw When you download the file you can run a program (have a look, loads free for PC and the phone) that will generate an MD5 sum also, the two should match, if not your download corrupted (this happens me a lot).
Hmmm. What error are you getting, what exactly happens in the recovery when you flash the zip?

Okay, ill have a look for a pc tool that will do that. I am currently installing the stock 4.3 i9505 rom then ill flash the Philz recovery and try installing the custom rom if the md5 matches. Ill reply with the results as soon as im done.

Cool, best of luck with it. I'm not too familiar with doing this on the S4 but got it all working last night. If I'm not full of ideas there's many, many poeple on this forum who know their stuff back to front who will get you sorted!
Any errors you encounter note them down! Make backups!! Then backup your backup on the PC!
FIXED
Just to update, it finally worked. Before i flashed the custom rom i installed the latest official firmware which was 4.3 from sam mobile, then before flash i went onto CWM and did the following:
format cache system and data x 2
wiped cache partition
wiped dalvik cache
rebooted recovery
formated cache system and data
rebooted recovery
installed from sd card
then wiped data/factory reset then rebooted
Awesome! Enjoy your new ROM!

[Q] Can't flash recovery zip

Hi,
I'm at my wits end. I had SlimRom installed for a week and all was fine, but I was curious about what new ROMs were out there so I backed up my phone using ROM Manager and did all the usual stuff to get a new ROM. I installed Gummy, but didn't like it; I installed one other ROM that I can't remember its name, but also didn't like that. I realized my comfy home of SlimRom was where I wanted to be, so I tried to flash the backup.zip that I had created but it kept saying installation aborted (Status 0).
After hours of countless attempts and just weird behaviour (sometimes boot loops, sometimes not booting into recovery, etc.) I finally got my phone back to stock.
I downloaded the latest SlimRom file 3 times to make sure it wasn't a corrupt zip (twice from my PC and once from my phone directly). Both the zip directly from Slim as well as the backup.zip that I made with ROM Manager give me the same installation aborted. The other error it gives is "E: Error in /data/media/0/slim....zip". I'm wondering if somehow my partition is screwed up. I tried using Odin's repartition, which just erased my recovery partition, but I got that back thankfully! When I wipe data/factory reset it says wipe complete (and the ROM does reset to factory) but it also says "E:unknown volume '/sdcard/.android_secure' "...I'm wondering if that relates to why the backup.zip file won't read properly. Maybe the partition got screwed up somehow?
I can flash a SU zip so it's not a flashing problem, per se. And thankfully Odin always works!
I think I may need the stock PIT file for the Telus S4 l337m, which I found but my phone says "secure check fail: pit"
I'm not sure where to go from here...
Rom manager is your problem. That software I'd waaaaay out of date and rarely ever works on newer phones.
Get you goo manager. Allow SU. Then hit the menu button and then hit install openrecoveryscript. You will get TWRP recovery. Then you follow the OP of your ROM of choice to install.
Sent from my GT-I9505G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks for the suggestion. I used Goo but it was no help. I can flash other ROMs fine. It seems to be just SlimBean that I can't flash :s. I've used TWRP recovery as well as CW and neither work.
Any other ideas?
This is a pickle I am completely unsure about, then... I am sorry I can't be of more assistance. It does seem like the partition is borked.

Is it safe to assume that you did a factory reset before you tried to flash? Might be a bad download as well. I would not change the name. Also you might try flashing twrp also.

Yes I definitely did a factory reset and cleared cache and dalvik-cache but I haven't tried TWRP because of recovery software preference.

Nothing wrong with that. I had to switch to TWRP when I was doing a nandroid backup and with cwm, it doesn't check to see if you have enough space, it just goes on and then I had a problem on my hands.
Also you will, or might come across a rom that doesn't get along with cwm. Anyway, that's another topic.
Try a full wipe, including the system partition along with the others.

[Q] I cannot flash any ROM-Editing Partitions Failed

I have ATT i337
It was originally on NB1, when I rooted, safestrap and installed phoenix rom. It worked great until I decided to flash Omega. So i did a nandroid backup. According to Omega, I had to flash:
Bootloader -> BL_I9505XXUFNAD_481100_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_C ERT.tar.md5
Modems XXUFNC9 -> I9505XXUFNC9_GSM_LTE_Modems.tar
Those failed for me, but I was still able to use my phone normally. I was told I just needed to flash the zip. I created a rom slot and tried to flash it on that. Well after a full wipe in SS 3.72 (everything except sD), I tried to flash zip, but it failed. Saying editing partitions failed. I deleted partitions and tried to flash zip on stock and still failed.
I had to ODIN to stock because phone would not boot. Rooted NB1 with towelroot, safestrap, then back into recovery to restore backup. After a 6 second restore, I rebooted, and the phone would not boot.
Odin back to NB1, upgraded to NC1, re rooted and tried to flash a new zip (phoenix rom), I am getting error editing partitions failed.
What can I do now?

1. Odin back to stock is exactly what I do when I have any issues. Good call on that one.
2. Since you are using safestrap, ignore the rom install instructions that say to flash a new modem or bootloader.
3. ROM slots do not work on safestrap v3.72. You can only flash in the stock slot.
4. If you are trying to restore your backup to the stock slot, your backup may be corrupt.
5. On your last attempt to flash the ROM, was it on stock slot or rom slot?

I've seen the unable to mount system message when there is an incompatibility with safestrap and your bootloader. Never seen the unable to mount data or ss.
Not really sure why it's doing that, but we can rule out a couple things. Try this...
1. Odin back to NB1 stock and take the NC1 update. Verify the bootloader is right... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51067793&postcount=4
2. If that's good, then try a different ROM, just to test. I'd recommend one from the ATT dev forum for this test to eliminate other possible issues.

On a side note- funny thing happened. I copied my whatsapp folder to the sdcard, verified everything was fine and it moved over. I also did an sms backup with the app, and moved that folder over as well. For whatever reason, the contents of just those two folders disappeared. So weird. Like a cruel joke.

Thanks for the link. Sorry, for the confusion. I just meant flash an ATT based ROM as opposed to a i9505 ROM that is compatible. Slim ROM is a nice looking ROM, but it's not going to work. Only touchwiz based ROMs work since we can't change the kernel.
