[GUIDE] How to install CM11 on S4 mini, quick/small guide - Galaxy S 4 Mini General

How to install CM11 on official international S4 mini LTE(serranoltexx) and 3G(serrano3gxx) variants only:
Don't use this guide for any other variants of S4 Mini.
M-releases and Snapshots are NOT upgrades to NIGHTLIES! Nightlies are always newer and more up to date than M-releases or Snapshots! "Upgrading" to snapshot from nightly can cause any number of problems. (More info about snapshots in the notes).
Check the notes below before doing anything or asking anything, if it already answers your question, thanks!
Root and install using ONLY CWM recovery (latest version is 6.0.5.1) and the guides in these threads:
Available here: [RECOVERY][ROOT] Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini LTE (GT-I9195)
Available here: [RECOVERY][ROOT] Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini 3G (GT-I9190)
Download the CM11 rom file for your device from http://get.cm/?device=serranoltexx or http://get.cm/?device=serrano3gxx and copy the file you downloaded into your sdcard(external or internal) along with the
Google Applications(gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip for Android 4.4.3+ / CM11, also ART compatible) (Optional, but recommended) (goo.im is not yet listing kitkat gapps) (also the gapps is only for 4.4.3 and up so it's for nightly roms).
Boot into CWM (Vol Up + Home just as the phone is booting up, navigate using Vol buttons, HOME to select, POWER to back).
Make a backup of your NANDroid (Optional, but recommended - Do this so you can return to your previous ROM).
Select "wipe data/factory reset" and press Yes. (This also wipes cache and dalvik cache.)
Go to Install zip from sdcard -> Choose zip from /sdcard, which you have put the rom file on (sdcard/ is internal and sdcard1/ is external).
Browse to it and flash the cm-11-2014xxxx-XXXX-serranoltexx/3gxx.zip file FIRST (nightly / M1 / RC / stable) by selecting and pressing Yes.
Then flash the gapps file like you just flashed the rom file. (Optional, but recommended).
Notes:
Moved this guide to here to save space from CM11 bug discussion thread.
This can brick your device, void your warranty and kill your cat if you don't follow the guides to the letter or you use these guides for the wrong S4 Mini variants like GT-I9192, Sprint(JDQ39.L520 or SPH-L520), SHV-E370K, SGH-I257M, SCH-R890, GT-I9195T and GT-I9197 etc.. These other variants aren't officially supported, but if you want to root them etc. search other threads from these S4 Mini forums for guides.
You can save the files either to internal or external sdcard. sdcard/ is internal and sdcard1/ is external.
Factory reset also wipes cache and dalvik cache.
Factory reset wipes data, but it doesn't wipe your internal sdcard (or external). Only data stuff like apps, settings for a rom etc., example pictures and other media stuff are saved.
When you flash a rom, the flashing script formats /system before flashing the rom.
If you download the rom files with phone the default path for the files in CWM recovery is: Install zip from sdcard -> Choose zip from /sdcard -> 0/ -> Download/.
Check this thread for more info about rooting and stuff related on CWM.
On the CWM install guide there's a step "10: Optional: Flash GT-I9195_Kernel_v1.zip to use a custom stock kernel, which might fix battery drain for some." This kernel is only for the stock samsung rom and not for CM11.
On the CWM install guide there's a S4Mini_RootKit_v2.zip, it's meant for stock samsung rom and not for CM11.
Upgrading to newer nightly: You can just flash it over the old one, but it's highly recommend to always backup before flashing newer nightly. Also some people like to wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing newer one, but it's not necessary.
If you want the latest CWM recovery updates to be installed at the same time you update to newer nightly, unlock developer options by tapping build number 10times from About phone settings and then tick the Update CM recovery option on from the developer options.
M-releases and Snapshots are NOT upgrades to NIGHTLIES! Nightlies are always newer and more up to date than M-releases or Snapshots! "Upgrading" to snapshot from nightly can cause any number of problems.
- If you want to use snapshots/m-releases, don't use nightlies at all! (and the other way around.)
- If you want to switch from nightlies to snapshots, always FULL WIPE.
- If you want to switcht from snapshots to nightlies, no need to full wipe.
Root and root app is integrated into CM11 rom, so you don't need to flash rootkit or install superuser app.
CWM aka ClockworkMod is the official Cyanogenmod recovery and the only one I recommend using.
CM aka Cyanogenmod.
The number 11 of CM tells which android version it's based on. CM11 is based on android 4.4.x KitKat, which is the latest one.
If you get warnings about applications doing not permitted actions, delete the following files from system/app, or let SuperSU fix it for you. KNOXAgent.apk, KNOXStore.apk and ContainerAgent.apk.
"Set Warranty Bit kernel" message means that your warranty is void depending on the country where you live (In EU it might still be under warranty, USA not. For others google). This happened because you had KNOX firmware installed on your phone when you bought it or you got one when you upgraded your stock rom. This can not be reseted yet.
What is knox?
(Not recommended at the moment, has bugs, date 3 aug 2014) Recommended app when using nightlies: For downloading smaller updates instead of whole nightlies, check CyanDelta updater app.
Recommended app when using nightlies: For making nandroid backups without booting to recovery, check this app (also has pro version).

It doesn't really matter. I would prefer external but you can try both if one of them doesn't work.

Okay awesome.
Two last questions before I do it:
Is it possible to get a hardbrick if I mess up?
Dont you have to wipe cache?
Thanks.

Of course there's always a chance if you don't follow the guides or flash wrong stuff for wrong device. But with these guides and the right models, there's really no chance of it.
Anyhow flashing is always at your own risk so you can only blame yourself if your flashing kills your cat.

On other tutorials it says you have to wipe cache and Delvik cache. Is that optional=?
+ I downloaded the nightly version and gapps over my phone. Can i leave them in the download folder or will they be gone after data wipe?

Factory reset also wipes cache and you can also wipe the dalvik too.
No they won't be, data wipe doesn't wipe your internal sdcard. Only data stuff like apps, settings for a rom etc., example pictures and other media stuff are saved.
Edit: Thanks for you questions, now I have added answers to them into the FAQ so I don't have to answer these again and now the guide is even better

Thanks and np I guess.
Will do it now.

No. You are probably bootlooping, suggest you recover your backup and try boot with it or flash newer/earlier nightly.
Check this thread's 1st post and the latest posts for info if some new nightly causes bootloops. Example 14th nightly caused bootloop.

Yeah try that. Also download the latest, 19th nightly.

Yay it worked. Maybe you should add wipe cache partion after factory reset.

I was wondering. I just rooted my S4 mini following the tutorial suggested in the first post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980
It gives a step 10: Optional: Flash GT-I9195_Kernel_v1.zip to use a custom stock kernel, which might fix battery drain for some.
Kernel changelog: https://github.com/arco/android_kern.../commits/stock
So what I want to ask: I want to install CM11, but experiencing little battery drainage from time to time. Should I first install GT-I9195_Kernel_v1.zip and then CM11 mod or not?

[Q] Problem with CM RC1

I rooted my phone today, then installed Rom Manager. Using Rom Manager I tried to install Cyanogen Mod 7 RC 1. It seemed to install fine, but when it starts up it goes to the Cyanogen Mod 7 splash screen and loads for a few seconds, then restarts(not the phone, it just replays the splash screen). I backed up my previous Rom, but I don't know how to restore it. Can someone help me get CM7 working or tell me how to restore my previous rom.
EDIT: I got the standard rom recovered, so I don't really have to worry about that part anymore? But how could I get CM 7 to work if I wanted to re flash it?
Do a nandroid backup through ROM manager first off if you haven't already.
Did you do a full data/cache/dalvik cache wipe before you flashed CM7RC1?
Did you flash Gapps at the same time as the ROM?
btw the RC2 has been out for a while.
Er...no. How do I do wipe the cache data? Also, I don't even know what Gapps is. I'm quite ignorant on the subject of roms.

It really is good to do this through recovery, although if you're not comfortable with general use of recovery, I think if you flash the CM7 zip through ROM manager you can check the box for "wipe data + cache".
Gapps is "Google Apps" aka market etc. etc.. These aren't included in the ROM, and I bet you'd like to have them . The link for the latest Gapps is in the CM7 ROM thread in the dev section. Haven't used ROM manager to flash in a long time (I do it through recovery manually) but I think you can check the box to install Gapps at the same time too if you don't wanna do it manually.
Yeah, I chose to install Google Apps. But are you saying if I download the zip file for CM7 like on my pc, then transfer it to my sdcard then fflash it that way, then I should be able to wipe the cache?

And data. it is extremely paramount (imho) that you wipe all of your data/cache/dalvik before flashing to ensure you get a good quality install.
Also, make sure you have the latest CWM recovery installed via ROM manager (assuming that you do already). Its 3.0.0.5 .
Like I said ROM manager can do this, but for nightlies/RC I just do it through recovery and make sure it gets done right.

So flashing the update keeps settings and apps in tact?

Yes. Nandroid JIC. Wipe cache and dalvik and just flash over.

Thanks a bunch fellas
After you flash the new CM zip, be sure to flash gapps (if you use it) and any other zips you've flashed. You won't lose your data (as long as you didn't wipe it), but you will lose any customizations that you flashed that write to /system (which would be most of them).

If you have already flashed gapps on an earlier version of CM and are just updating to a newer version of CM you do not have to flash gapps again. Just wipe cache and davlik and flash the update and kernel if you use a custom kernel and that's it.

Reinstalled it - now i did it like this - Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe cache, Wipe dalvik cache and FORMAT SYSTEM. Then installed without supercharger but installed thunderbolt. Installed Arc S Launcher, Android Apps, Android Lock screen, Android notification bar and no user apps. Also checked remove useless apps. It worked! I'm pretty sure you need to format system if you're on locked bootloader.
This is not working for me on unlocked bootloader I tried with out the supercharger and thunderbolt installed and then with them installed.

Just having unlocked bootloader does nothing. Unlocking only allows custom kernels to be installed, it doesn't help anything else.

Don't worry I have had probs installing other custom roms like jelly sandwich, ice bean, think it is down to not using custom kernel when my bootloader it's open.
Dont know how to use fastboot.

[Best Ever][Noob-friendly] ROM Flashing Guide

Here I start my new thread:
Best Ever Flashing Guide!
I've started this thread to give you my own experienced flashing guide. This thread/guide will provide you easy and step-by-step tutorial to flash a ROM. If I'm wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me.
You'd say what's new in this thread? I say, "None other guide provide a deep-through guide and these type of new processes that can help you in better ROM flashing."
Before starting I'd like to say:
Anything you're doing is your own responsibility and I'm not responsible for any type of damage to you device.(As seen on many thready, I found this interesting) If you point your finger towards me in case of any damage, I'll LOL at you!
Now let's start with part 1:
Backing-up: When you're switching to a new ROM it's better to back-up your important apps that you need in your new ROM. Because if you don't do this, you've to re-download your apps which is time, data & battery consuming. Here you need a File Explorer such as MiXplorer or ES File Explorer or Root Explorer (Get 'em by clicking on names). Now follow these steps:
Open your File manager and goto Root directory.
Head to "data" folder and then open "app" folder. Here you can see all your installed apps. These are 'User Apps'.
Now select the apps that you want to backup.
Now press "Copy" button to copy you apps.
Head to your SD Card. (You can find "sdcard" folder back in root directory.)
Just paste them wherever you want.
That's it! You've backed-up you apps!

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
Now let's move to part 2:
Pre-flash initial wipe: Yeah! Pre-flash wipe! This means that you're wiping your installed apps' data. Sometimes in flashing instructions of some ROMs, it is not given to wipe \data because that wouldn't install your new ROM. SO here's the manual way:
Open you file manager.
In your SD Card, there's a folder named "Android". Just delete it!
Now head back to "data>app" select 'em all and delete 'em! (As you've backed-up, don't fear to delete 'em.)
Part 3:
Pre-flash final wipe: This is the final step of wiping manually. CAUTION: After this wipe you MAY NOT be able to use your phone, so before this, finish your any other precious work then head to this part. Now follow these steps:
Open your file manager and again head to Root directory.
Now goto "data" then again "data" folder. Here you'll see lots of folders.
Just select 'em all and press "Delete". SOME FOLDERS MAY NOT BE DELETED as they are currently in use.
Now Reboot or power-off your phone! (If you're unable to reboot/power-off, just pull-out your phone's battery)
Part 4:
Flashing Kernel:Before Installing/flashing a ROM you must install a Kernel otherwise you'll get error in Flashing ROM or get bugs in installed ROM. You can get the kernel to flash inside you ROM's zip. (Just open the ZIP file and extract boot.img) Here are the Kernel Flashing instructions:
Open FlashTool. If you don't have FlashTool, get it here!
Click the Lightning Icon and choose Fastboot mode.
Click Select Kernel to flash and choose your kernel. (if it is .elf file choose .elf format from dropdown menu and if it is .img file choose it from same.)
Before clicking Open, Turn-off your phone. Wait at-least 5 sec. press and hold vol+ (volume increase) button and simultaneously insert data cable into your phone.
A Blue LED will light-up and here you can remove finger from the button. (On some Xperias that light will glow-up in the Illumination bar). Now Press Open by clicking on your kernel.
It'll flash kernel to your device in just 3-5 seconds then you can reboot and Install your desired ROM.
Part 5:
Flashing ROM: This part relates to your respective ROM's flashing instructions. Some important points here can help you:
Most of the Stock, Stock-based and CyanogenMod10, 10.1 ROMs use this wiping precess in Clockworkmod Recovery:
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache partition.
Goto advanced and wipe dalvik-cache.
Install ROM.
Most of the CyanogenMod 9 ROMs use this wiping procedure:
Install ROM
Install GAPPS
Wipe data/factory reset.
Most of the CyanogenMod 10.2 ROMs use this wiping procedure:
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache partition.
Goto mount & storage and do a format system.
Install ROM.
Most of the Kit-Kat 4.4 ROMs use this wiping procedure:
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache partition.
Install ROM.
IMPORTANT: Some ROMs have different wiping procedure, please follow them. This is just for reference purpose if wiping procedure isn't provided in the ROM's thread. Also, DON'T FORGET TO FLASH THE KERNEL every time before you Install a ROM.
For most Xperia Devices the fastboot key is vol+ not vol-. Vol- is for flashmode which is for flashing a stock ftf firmware.
No mention of unlocking bootloader or how to do it, can't flash a kernel without unlocked bootloader. No mention of losing Bravia Engine/X-Reality and DRM keys if bootloader is unlocked. No mention of backing up TA partition. No mention of installing recovery. No mention of the fact that specific versions of recovery are required to flash Kitkat ROMs. Most custom ROM instructions I've seen have the user flashing ROM before kernel.
On #4 you need to add...

You are mistaking. TWRP has a Advanced tab. I use it daily. The Advanced tab allows you to wipe the system, dalvik, cache, etc. Basic wipe does not wipe System.
Lack of support you are correct on.

Dude! There's no issue of Locked Bootloader here. This issue arises when you're installing a ROM. Most of the times you just need to delete boot.img from ROM.zip and it installs but still there are many ROMs that are specifically made for Unlocked Bootloaders. For this refer to your ROM maker's guide.
P.S.: In many ROMs' description there's written "UB" which means only Unlocked Bootlodaer and "LB" which means Locked Bootloader and sometimes both "LB" & "UB" which means that ROM is made for both Locked and Unlocked Bootloaders but each may have different installation method.

[Q] Updating CWM when ROM Manager says unsupported device.

I'll start by apologizing if this has been covered elsewhere. I looked but couldn't find it. I am definitely a noob, but trying to learn.
I bought a Nook Color already rooted a few years ago. Under "About Phone", it does say Model number is NookColor, it is Android version 2.3.7, and the Mod version is CM-7.1.0-encore. (kernel version 2.6..32.9 if it matters)
It already had ROM Manager on it, and when I boot into recovery, it has CWM 3.2.0.1. When I try to update CWM with Rom Manager, it tells me that I have an unsupported device. When I click Device not listed above, it pops up with "NookColor does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?"
I assumed somebody must have so I hit "yes", and it asked me to confirm the version. I clicked on ClockworkMod 3.x+. It tells me after that Rom Manager has been set up to use your existing recovery installation. I hit "ok", and under Recovery Setup, it tells me Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.x.x.x I did reboot into recovery, and it still comes up as version 3.2.0.1
My question is, is there a way to download the most current version of CWM to my sd card and install it from CWM? If so, does anyone know where I could find the download?
My goal is to update to CM11, and the instructions I have tell me I need the latest version of CWM.
First off, get rid of ROM Manager, it does nothing but screw up Nook Colors. You can get a new enough version of CWM at this post:

Thank you for the reply. Yeah, I kind of figured I needed to get rid of that. I had already downloaded cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-encore, and gapps-kk-20140606-signed in order to do this. I had a hard time getting those gapps for some reason, I hope they are the right ones. I looked that that thread. I must be blind. I can't see where I would get the latest CWM. I also don't know what to do with it when I do find it.

I found this in that thread. cwm-6.0.4.7-encore-signed Is that the right one? It says it's EMMC recovery. Can it be put on the sd card and installed through existing CWM?
I found this patched one: cwm-6.0.4.7-Jan31-encore-signed
Yes it can be put on sd and flashed to emmc with your existing cwm.

Install zip from sd. After you flash go to advanced and reboot to recovery so you are in the new recovery and then flash the rom and gapps zips and do a factory rest.

I flashed the rom and the gapps, and it looked like it was doing it, but as it was saying uninstaling old apks and installing new ones etc, it was taking a while. I left the room to find it rebooting back in to CM7. Should I go back in and reflash again and stay put this time?

Sorry it took so long to answer. I'm on the east coast, I was sleeping when you sent your last message. It says CWM-based Recovery v6.0.4.7 at the top. I don't know if the word "based" means anything.
I had checked the MD5 Checksum with a utility I found for the CM-11 nightlies I found off of Download.CyanogenMod.org, and they matched.
I thought that maybe that the Nook was having trouble with my external card so I put the rom and the gapps on the internal card and tried it, and it still gives me the errors.
This is what I have been doing, and this is according to instructions I found in another thread:
1. I wipe data. on the nook screen it says:
CWM-based Recovery v6.0.4.7
--Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
E:unknown vulume for path [/sd-ext.]
formatting /storage/sdcard0/.android_secure...
Data wipe complete.
I then wipe cache partition:
--Wiping cache...
Formatting /cache...
Cache wipe complete
I then wipe Dalvik cache under advanced:
It says Dalvik Cached wiped.
then I go to choose zip from /storage/sdcard1 and pick cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-encore.zip (also tried with 20150607) that's where I get:
--Installing : /storage/sdcard1/cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-encore.zip
Finding update package...
Installing update package...
Installing update...
E:Error in /storage/sdcard1 and pick cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-encore.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted
Then it shows the Android guy keeled over. I then do a restore and he pops back up. on the screen it says:
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 mismatch!
I boot back into system, and it loads CM-7 as if it was it's first day. It wants me to sign in to Google account etc.
I thought that when you do all those wipes, that at least the internal card wasn't supposed to have much left on it. It appears like mine has everything that it always had, not that I kept much in there. It does show files for ADW Launcher. Unless maybe they were restored through Google when I signed in.
Sorry this post is so long, but if you are helping me, I wanted to be detailed.
Everything is as it should be except for that error 0 and your backup md5 mismatch.
Just some things to point out. A factory reset wipes data and cache. So no need to wipe cache and dalvik cache, those are both wiped with the factory reset. And a factory reset does not wipe system, that is usually done by the new rom installer. Since that failed, system was not wiped and still had cm 7 still on it, but not set up since you wiped data.
And a data wipe does not wipe your files on the internal sdcard, which is why you still had some files from your prior installation.
And you need a newer CWM, version 6.0.4.8, for roms after 5/16/14:

Yes, it certainly would have made it easier. That newer cwm allowed me to install the rom and gapps.
The only problem I am seeing now is that I don't see the Play Store icon. I see Play Books, Play Games, Play Movies & TV, Play Music, and Play Newsstand, but no Play Store. I am going to assume that I didn't have the correct gapps.
If that is the case, do you know where I can find them, and would I just flash it, and do I need to wipe anything afterwards?
Incidentally, even after flashing this rom I still have files left from things that I had installed before that I don't want. Are those just to be deleted manually?

Yes you must manually delete any sdcard files you don't want.
And I have a version of gapps for KitKat here:

If flashing that does not fix it, go to cwm and format /system, reflash the rom and new gapps zips.

Are you sure that's the right gapps? I have 4.4.4 now and that file says 4.4.2 You're the expert, but I just want to double check.
By the way....how is a person supposed to know what the right gapps file is for the rom used? I know that roms are device specific, but I don't know about gapps. I put CM-11 on my wife's Kindle Fire. Can I use the gapps file that I used for hers?
By the way, if I don't like CM-11, can I put CM-10, or CM-12 on my Nook using the same CMW that I now have? It seems like this is a little slow, and for some reason the lock screen is always in landscape mode.

I was able to answer my own question. I actually did the wipes, and reinstalled the rom (just in case), and I flashed the gapps that I used on my wife's Kindle. Now I know that gapps are are not specific to the device. I don't know why there are so many different versions of gapps for a rom though. I also don't know how you are supposed to know which is the best to use. It seems like it's always buried in a thread somewhere, but where do you go to find the information out otherwise? Also, it seems like if you are going to flash a rom, you have to have the correct version of cwm, and that the most recent updated one isn't always best. How are you supposed to know which version for which rom? Also, do you know if they have stopped making nightlies for cm-11? The last one was on 6/14, and it seems a little buggy. If they do make one, and I want to flash it, do I just flash it, or would I have to do the wipes again and would that make me have to reinstall all my apps? As you can tell, I am trying to learn all about this.

As an end user, you do not really want to use nightlies, they are usually buggy and experimental. You want to use the latest snapshot which for the most part have their bugs worked out. Usually you can flash new nightlies over older nightlies without wiping. But if you go backwards, like from a newer nightly to an older one or an older snapshot, you should wipe. You can try it without wiping, but if you experience problems, go back and wipe, no need to reflash.

I downloaded and installed the M12 snapshot. Well, for one thing, the lockscreen is always in landscape mode. For another, it is now running just as slow as slow can be. Do you have any idea why that might be? I put the rom in my external sd card and installed from there. That's what I should have done correct? Is there another build that I should have put on here instead? I also noticed, that even after doing all the wipes, and installing new roms, I still had files from before I started all of this. Did it not wipe correctly?

Well, I am having some issues with this rom. For example, the wifi isn't as strong as it used to be, and some apps don't want to connect. When I reboot, app folders that I put on the desktop end up missing as well as some icons and I have to put them on again. I did go in to cwm and wiped the caches, but that didn't help, not to mention the continued landscape mode with the lockscreen. Any ideas? What rom do you think is best?

I never liked cm11. I liked cm10.1.3 the best. It is very stable and everything works. If you go to that you must downgrade your cwm. I have versions on my NC tips thread linked in my signature.
