[GUIDE] How to: Install CM10.2 on LOCKED bootloader [Xperia SP] - Xperia SP General

Disclaimer:
I am not to be held responsible for any actions that you take by following this guide that result in harm to your device. Sony devices are almost impossible to brick.
pre-requirements:
You're going to need the following things:
Flashtool
CWM Xperia SP Package
.266 4.3 kernel
.257 firmware
DooMLoRD easy rooting toolkit
CyanogenMod 10.2 Package & gapps
Step 1:
extract Flashtool, place the .257 firmware file in the firmwares folder and then run flashtool, flash the .257 firmware. This process could take 5-10 minutes.
To do this, click the electric bolt symbol in FlashTool, and select Flashmode, select .257 and then when the prompt says to connect your device in flashmode, power off your phone and holding volume down, plug your phone into the computer. This will then flash the files.
Turn your phone back on and enable USB debugging in android development settings.
Step 2:
Extract DooMLoRD's easy rooting toolkit and make sure that you have your phone connected and adb is enabled, while the phone is powered on run the script and this will then root your phone, do this by double clicking runme_win.bat, your phone will reboot in this process and it will be rooted.
Step 3:
Time to install a custom recovery, unpack the CWM Xperia SP package listed above. Make sure your phone is still turned on and in adb mode (USB debugging enabled) and then run install.bat from the package. You will need to accept a superuser request prompt on your phone meaning that you will need your phone screen on. Recovery is now installed.
Step 4:
Copy the CyanogenMod 10.2 package & google apps package to your phone, reboot into clockwork recovery by pressing the volume UP button once when you see the blue LED light up and feel a short vibration while your phone is booting. In CWM choose factory reset, and then install the two files we put on your phone using install zip from sd card option. Use volume rockers to navigate and power button to select options. Make sure you install CM zip then Google apps zip
Step 5:
After installing the ROM, power off your device in CWM and then connect your device in FlashMode again (hold vol down while plugging into computer) and then flash the .266 kernel only file. Reboot your phone.
Step 6:
Enjoy! You now have CyanogenMod and CWM installed on your phone, even with a locked bootloader. Recovery is now accessed with volume down.
I appreciate thanks greatly, and any issues I can help with and you can discuss them in this thread. I hope I have helped.

awesome

That. It's one good guide that anybody can follow. Just one question. Will this rom be as stable as normal cm, will it be full cm or just a stripped down version

can this rom be flashed on ROOTED device running 4.3

I don't see why it can't be as stable as normal CM.. The only thing that isn't working at the moment is GPS, everything else to be honest it runs smoother than stock.
I'm going to work on getting AOKP to work if they have a compilable 4.3 branch. I'm also going to try and encourage ROM devs to add locked bootloader support and I shall show them how

Just follow the steps, if you have CWM installed on your XSP with 4.3 already all you need to do is flash the ROM in CWM nothing else..
I posted method for 4.1.2 because I'm presuming the user does not have root, and this is only rootable firmware.

Awesome job to able get this rom on my lock xperia sp bro. And also am looking forward from you ,that you will bring other roms on my lock xperia sp which is the best phone ever.:good:

To have root on CM I need to flash SuFix as in existenz?

I have never used cm roms before...when the gps. Is fixed I will try rhis out, sadly I use gps alot due to work and driving into towns I don't know etc...
(Q) Due to limited space on sp can we use apps like link2sd and foldermount.
Or does the scripts not run.

Nope, su binary is included and root is already in the ROM.
CyanogenMod also features its own root permissions app (Settings -> Superuser) so you dont even need to install supersu or any equivalent, it works out the box.

Theoretically yeah, these scripts should run. I will look into it soon

I had just posted a thank-you in another thread for the same - outstanding work. A big thank-you from one who prefer not to touch the BL
And thanks for the lucid instructions. Will download the stuff when I am off work.:good:

yeah i did it succesfully ..need to wipe data and factory reset .then install the rom and gapps....... thank you a lot

Note: the link to the 257 firmware is dead.
[not applicable to those who already rooted their phones ]
EDIT:
Just installed the rom. Also 'upgrage' kernel to 266 (had preferred 254 as it was faster, but with this new rom...)
Question:
a. could one just live with 254 kernel instead of flashing 266 at the end?
b. Now that I have flashed 266, could I re-flash to downgrade (just the kernel) to 254 later on?
Fun time - rom is working on my device.
Thanks a million!

If you flashed the .254 kernel your Phone won't boot...you just get a bootloop. You need. 266
don't downgrade kernel without downgrading rom as well.

Great work by @bagyusz and @KeiranFTW for the initial spark idea. I thot all was lost when i got vendorlocked sp.
I would love to have MIUI (4.3 based) using cm10.2 as base. @OP, if you have any experience of using MIUI patchrom, please help me.
The steps i have already done are:
1. make workspace
2. Make firstpatch
3. Make fullota
now i have to diff and patch the smalis, but not sure exactly how many smalis need to be patched for boot, and how do i know when to stop.
Having LB means to test my port, i have to go thru all the hassle of flash ftf, rooting and then check for every failed attempt.
THanks in advance
Yasir
I know there is an MIUI thread already there, but the OP states its for UBL only, plus he uses 4.2.2 as base. so thot this might be the right place.
---------- Post added at 09:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 PM ----------
btw, @ keiran...
I once thot about this... can u confirm im true....
what if we dont format /system partition in updater script of cm.zip... every time, we flash, system wont be formatted so recovery will stay, and if there was something wrong with cm.zip, we can try to fix and flash the new cm.zip and it will overwrite the previous versions of every file hence we know it boots or not.
If it boots, we can do a clean install.
Correct me if im wrong here. Thanks

No need to, I am creating build repository that will be able to build CyanogenMod using the cyanogenmod build system, basically I just add the files that are needed for the hack into the repository and then I will be able to build CM and flash it straight off - I'll do this so when the ROM is built it includes recovery and hijack in the /system partition and so when you flash it, it will still be there.
As soon as I get access to a build server I will build AOKP for locked bootloader (jb-mr2)

All work except my wifi. It's grayed out. I got data though...
Just to note: that I was on 4.1.2 (254) rooted when I flashed this rom and GAPPS. After which I flashed the 266 kernel.
Edit:
I did a factory reset under recovery (CWM) and now my wifi has turned on (blue). Unfortunately I am away from my wifi (home) point, so can't test it out fully.
Back to reinstalling of data...

Just preparing for this, I downloaded the kernel from the main thread not the one linked by KeiranFTW do we only need to flash the kernel.sin or do we need other files like fotakernel.sin like when flashing existenz?

The link on both threads only feature the .266 kernel - for use after installing cyanogenmod.
The .257 is the full firmware for rooting purposes.
I have already rooted my SP previously therefore, I merely installed CM and flashed the .266 kernel at the end of the process (actually I used my country's version, unchecked all but kernel only) - worked for me.

[Q] Probs installing Cyanogenmod 7.1 on x8(E15i)

Hey.
I'm having difficulties with new cyanogenmod 7.1
I Followed different tutorials and none of them helped me.
I started with stock 2.1 rom and did all the unlocking bootlader stuff , then installed custom kernel and managed to install cyanogenmod 7.1 but then occurred a funny thing . There was only FreeXperia logo showing up, nothing else, and it rebooted all the time. Then I flashed stock rom again and tried to understand what's wrong and tried to use different kernels and nothing.
So my question is. Is there anything I'm missing here?
Henri.
Full wipe after you install rom.
Dot forget to make backups first.
about that...
i always do full wipe after installing roms, so it has to be something else.
Thnks anyway..
But after browsing several topics in XDA forum I saw that I'm not only one with the problem.
If anybody has had the problems like I do and got the solutions, every kind of tips are welcome.
Thread closed
I got it all working, but I don't know what was the reason, because, I just did the whole thing again about three or four times, and then it just booted and worked.
I never could install Cyanogenmod in my phone... could you?
Hey!!!
I could write a total working tutorial how I managed to get to work everything, but it takes time, so if you want tutorial send me private message , so I create it for you.
Henri
Does wifi and/or 3G work for you longer then 15 minutes?
No, but at the moment I'm using RC1 flawlessly.

umm..why not post it publicly man ? It will be useful for everyone including myself.
Would also like that tutorial
ok,
i'm gonna post it here after finishing it.
So, the wanted tutorial is here!
Firstly it's for xperia x8(E15i) to be superclear.
I'm gonna put that tutorial into steps.
STEP 1
You need to have stock 2.1 rom with baseband XXX015 , if you don't have it, then go to Sony Ericsson's webpage and download the upload service and flash it back into your phone.
STEP 2
You phone has to be rooted. Easieset way is using Superoneclick(sorry, i'm not gonna provide the link, because it's just google-ing thing to you who need rooting program)
STEP 3
Now, everything comes to the unlocking process for bootloader. there is also tutorial how to succeed when using s1tool and msm7227 (if you have problem, then I don't know). Try to undestand the tutorial of doing it.
S1tool is for identifying if your phone is unlocked or not.
and msm7227 is for unlocking
tut is here - LINK
I wish luck, don't brick your phone, but it's not so hard to understand tutorials if you have right phone and right tutorial.
STEP 4
I totally suggest to install stable rom. The reason is that released 7.1 has bugs and incompatibility with some phones and i haven't got wifi and 3g working , but tried different roms and kernels.
I provide links i got from deani77, big thanks to him.
You can try this link for FXP028 ROM - http://www.multiupload.com/IIWIPG1ALH
For FXP030 kernel try this link - http://hotfile.com/dl/132650338/7b17...USTOM.ftf.html
(that release is RC1 of Cyanogenmod 7.1 but I think it's the best at the moment!)
and you download all the files as usual. Rom zip package should be in the SD card's root folder, so you can easily install it after flashing kernel
STEP 5
installing is quite simple actually. You need to use flashtool that is provided with rom(link in step 3)
firstly you flash kernel. Kernel file is the one you downloaded .ftf file. You have to put that file(X8_custom.ftf) into firmware folder which is inside of flashtool folder.
Then you open flash tool and you click FLASH, then appears little window and you click ok and then you need to plug in your phone into usb while holding down back button. Your phone has to be off when you are doing that. Then flashtool identifies your phone and will flash the kernel into your phone. when everything comes smooth then you now have fxp custom kernel. it has clockworkmod recovery and you need to click several times back button when FreeXperia logo appears.
STEP 6
You have to do factory reset and format, also i suggest from advanced menu using format system.
Then you select from the recovery menu install custom zip... and you browse your rom .zip file and if everything is OK then it should display "installing update or smth" if it's done then good for you, you reboot and it should work.
IF YOU WANT GOOGLE APPS , then google the link and install it same way you did with the rom. You can do it any time.
..
So if anything is not understandable then ask. I'm not an expert or anything, I just did things like I described.
Best,
Henri.
i have still had problems with bootloop and passing md5 checksum any idea on how to fix this?
mm.. at the moment I don't know but what that md5 checksum means?
I fixed my bootloop issue when I flashed back to stock rom, then I just did all the steps I describe again (not unlocking bootloader because it was unlocked already) .. but I don't know what's really does the bootlooping thing. I just got lucky. It took me like billion hours until I got it working...

[Guide] {Arc/Arc S} All-in-one: bootloader, rooting, kernel, ROM (4.0.3 firmware)

DELETED!
Don't want to risk anyone getting bricked, because of me giving you the wrong info.
Thanks for this topic, but I've a few questions:
- If I unlock the bootloader, can I still use TrackID or is it completly over?
- Which other Sony apps are effected (except WisePilot)?
- Can I re-lock the bootloader with FlashTool as written in the forums here to use TrackID again?
- Can I flash a new bootloader with FlashTool, too? I didn't read anything about it and I don't want to use any sony page.
- Currently I'm using Xperia CWM (from Google Play) with a stock kernel and different ROMs. It works so far. Is CWM included with every kernel?
1) Download TrackID from the market. That's a better and newer version than the one supplied with the ROM, plus it works even with an unlocked bootloader.
2) FB Like won't work if you've got the bootloader unlocked. But I hardly think that's a deal breaker.
3) Yes, you can relock the bootloader but the original TrackID still wouldn't work as you would have erased the DRM keys. (The newer version still works).
4) You can't flash a bootloader. You can flash kernels and ROMs.
5) Most custom kernels have CWM recovery within.
Cheers! Hope that answered your questions.

This was a typo...
Did I mention that I'll flash a new kernel soon? I'll try it with FlashTool.
1. Can I unlock & root after official ICS update?
2. Can I install custom ROM using this(http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_Xperia_Arc:_Full_Update_Guide) method?
Just to be sure: I can only unlock the bootloader of my Arc S with the Sony-method? Is there another free way to do it?
In FlashTool I've to select "Flash" -> "Fastboot Mode" -> "Reboot into fastboot mode (via ADB)" -> "Select kernel to Flash" and flash the kernel file?
edit: All my questions were answered in the last hours.
hi, can i root my arc s with ICS with DoomLor method?
Hi,
I did steps 1& 2 (unlocking & rooting) but nothing seems to have happened. How can I tell if it worked? I followed everything to the T and got no errors.
Ive just checked and my bootloader is unlocked butthe pphone does not appear to have been rooted (I checked using a root checker app). Can you think of any reason for this? Should I just try again or could that cause me problems?
Thanks
edit:
Do I need to do step 3 & 4 before it is fully rooted? I assumed I could stop after step 2...
anybody? please help. im not sure if i should try to flash the rom if it isn't rooted yet, or is that what i need to do to complete the process?
soooo confused

I'm running Android 2.3.4 and the build number is 4.0.2.A.0.62.
thanks for that
i have arc s and when i tried the way you say
it says already unlocked
is that normal ??
or there is a problem ??
This has only been tested on Arc S with 4.0.3 firmware.

To flash a kernel:
This will wipe all your data
Turn off your device, make sure you have atleast one ROM on your SD card in case anything goes wrong.
Put the kernel boot.img in /fastboot/fastboot_with_Android_USB_file/fastboot folder.
Press and hold SHIFT button while right clicking at an empty space in the /fastboot/fastboot_with_Android_USB_file/fastboot folder, and select "open command window here". (you can now release the SHIFT button )
Now plug your phone's USB cable to your computer.
Press and hold the MENU button on your phone, while connecting the MicroUSB connector to your phone.
When the LED turns blue you can release the button, your phone is now in fastboot mode.
Open the command window and insert the text you got in the Kernel thread, most certainly fastboot flash boot FILENAME.img, and press ENTER.
When the Command Window is finished close it and unplug your phone.
Turn on the phone, and when the button backlights turn on quickly press any button. Your phone will now boot into CWM Recovery.
RECOMMENDED: do a full wipe and flash your ROM.
If you want to keep your ROM and data just wipe cache and dalvik.
(If you're coming from a kernel with WiFi modules (ArcNight, DoomKernel) DO NOT do this, it will only mess up your phone.)

[Guide][CDMA R800x] FXP CM7 to CM9 upgrade. (As of FXP 125)

Hi everybody! I'm Dr...
Nah nm. Anyways well the past 2 days I have been working on switching from FXP CM7 to CM9. Needless to say, the process was abit confusing and did run across some snags along the way. So now that I figured it out with some help. I am returning the favor to the community and putting up this guide. (Also this guide is for users who already have an unlocked bootloader and so. So if you are a new R800x user who JUST unlocked their bootloader using testpoint or so, you too can use this guide)
Keep in mind this guide is based on the changes and tweaks from FXP 125!
So for those who are using a R800x CDMA Xperia play, this is for you.
-= The Prep =-
1: You will need the Flashtool to flash the latest ftf from Verizon. agraceful was nice enough to put it on his cloud storage here. http://www.mediafire.com/?yas7dola6dgd8 (You may wanna disable your AV for this as Kaspersky for me, didnt like the file since it uses exploits to do the stuff to your phone) if the cloud storage is down, this is the thread for the flashtool. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351299
2: The latest Verizon ftf file here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696233
3: The latest FXP CM9 (remember its zeusc that you are downloading for!) AND the gapps for ICS! (Very important you use the right gapps here), http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447542
*OPTIONAL* 4: Mjolnir Kernel (boot.img) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708459 (Rename that img file to boot.img) (This is a diff kernel which may have some different features and abilities compared to fxp 125, so take a look and choose, atm it has zRam support (compcache) )
*OPTIONAL* 5: Cdma Carrier Name Fix - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/21955004/Carrier Fix.zip (This can either let you use a custom carrier name or least fix it from saying T-Cdma 64)
6: Of course, fastboot, drivers, and drivers for the flashtool which come with flashtool for flash drivers. (Not covered in this guide, cause if you already have CM7 on CDMA.. I am assuming you already have an unlocked bootloader, drivers etc already installed)
Now once you have everything. Time to do some EXTRA note prep work:
1: Make note of your MDN/MSID numbers. (The phone number and 2nd set of number incase you need to manually program your phone if OTA programming doesnt work)
2: Titanium Backup of your apps/data
3: Put the CM9 zip, cdma mega fix, and gapps ics into the memory card root folder. You will need this here to flash in a bit.
4: Kiss your phone bye bye and tell it you love it and that it will be back online soon if you dont mess it up!
Now you are ready to get started!
-= The Upgrade Install Process! =-
1: Turn your phone off, hold the back button and plug in the usb, You should be in the flash mode. Load up flashtool. (Your PC will install the drivers now if it needs to or the flashtool will error and tell you where the drivers are located to install and run its exe file to install)
2: With drivers ready, phone ready, you can drag the verizon ftf file to the main screen of flashtool. It should start up, give you some notes, tell you what you need to do if needed and just start flashing. Wait till its done fully, then you can close out of it, reboot your phone, if it boots up to Verizon screen setup, you have done the job correctly! Grats!
3: Unplug USB, Turn off phone, hold the search button, then plug in the usb again. You will see a blue light on the power button to tell you that you are fastboot mode.
4: Make sure the boot.img (Either the boot.img from FXP 125 zip file or the downloaded one) is in the same folder as your fastboot command! From cmd prompt, be in the directory of your fastboot and type fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img this should be a quick process and will put the new kernel you need with its cwm recovery built in needed for CM9. After thats done, type fastboot -i 0xfce reboot
5: During the reboot phase, LOOK at the power button. The MOMENT you see it light up "blue" hold the back button. This will load you into CWM where you can get started!
6: Now you SHOULD have your files on your SD card ready to be flashed! If you dont and you forgot. Just go to "mount" and mount the usb storage and then put your files on the sd card. (Silly person forgetting! Remember, its the cm9 zip, cdma fix, and the gapps ics)
7: Now flash the fxp 125 cm9 zip. Will take a min or 2. Once that is done. Do the 4x wipe. Wipe/Factory reset, Wipe Cache, Then goto Advanced, Wipe Devlik, Wipe Battery Stats.
8: Now flash gapps ics
9: (Optional) Flash the Cdma Carrier name fix.
10: Reboot into your phone.
If you see the cool transwarp sliders style android logo. Go WOOT!
-= The Inital Setup =-
Now that you are staring at the new android setup wizard here are my "personal" tips
1: From the setup wizard. I just did the basic, and SKIPPED the sign in part. Get your wifi running once inside if you want. Then load up "Play Market" and sign into google from there.
Why did I do this? Well.. I did it the other way 1st time signed in during the setup process.. and well.. I left the option "Restore phone from google" enabled.. yea.. not smart, next I know its installing EVERY app I had from Google. (Which I guess it was basing it on the google history or using my G1s installed stuff to restore from) By doing it the way above, it doesnt try to start restoring everything. Which is good.
2: Now to program your phone number and so again. Now I did this using pageplus, which is still verizon. For me, the OTA to get my number back in was *228 send. Wait wait wait, and it should program and be done with. Alt numbers are *22890 and *22891 which some update the roaming towers or just an alt form of OTA. Now if none of that works, then do the manual programming.
3: In the market, get titanium backup (and your pro key) and install.
4: The rest you should be able to do yourself as far as restoring goes using titanium backup.
Congrats you are now running ICS CM9 FXP!
Hope this guide helps people who maybe confused and would like a lil thread with something to look over to help them get it going. =)

Hey,
You can make the update, as of FXP125 you don't need a separate kernel to get CWM. It's baked in again. Volume keys get you into it.

You can make the update, as of FXP125 you don't need a separate kernel to get CWM. It's baked in again. Volume keys get you into it.

Done. I left it optional for now. =) Also the only thing I need to confirm on is if we need that cdma mega fix file still... I forgot my XP at home.. (Go figure) so I wont be able to test the update out till tm. Heh.

I did not have to flash the megafix. All I did was the following (w/ FXP125):
1)Use flashtool to flash new baseband from 2.3.4 FTF (when selecting what to flash, I excluded everything but baseband).
2)Use fastboot to flash the FXP125 kernel.
3)Booted into CWM, wiped data/cache/dalvik cache/battery stats, then flashed FXP125 and the 4/29 Gapps.
Only thing I think needs flashed is the carrier name fix. My phone says T-CDMA 64 again.
Ok thanks. Yea, according to lightningdude the only things in the cdma mega fix was just the gamepad fix (dont know what that is yet) and the cdma carrier name. Gonna try to see about those. While its minor, still good info to have.
Also its being said that we should use V6 Supercharger on the CM9 to improve some games again for XP users.
Ok thanks to lightningdude, I put the cdma carrier name fix in the guide. =)

Ahh OK. That gamepad fix is the patch to the .idc file changing the button map so circle isn't back in some games.
Sounds like the megafix is just all the preferred patches that were applied to paxChristos' CDMA builds.
Yea, just made life easier. Also I excluded the gamepad fix as thats a personal pref.. cause BUTTON_B vs BACK_ALT mapping can break some apps which devs code for one or the other. Normally everyone is using BACK_ALT. Then emulators which can remap it all anyways works fine with it.
Edit: Ok just updated to 125 myself without the CDMA carrier name thing. My Pageplus comes up as Verizon Wireless, so not sure if the patch was needed, but still its in guide as optional, case you want a custom name or you do get that t-cdma 64 issue.

are you saying that steps 3-5 of the install process is not required since its baked in? Sorry, just getting into the more advanced rooting/customization with the r800x. I'm going to unlock the bootloader (put this off for way to long but with the latest "No ICS from Sony/Verizon" i'm just going to move ahead with my own upgrades, then ftf the verizon 2.3.4, and then hopefully be getting ICS.

Looks like the original instructions have been updated. You should follow the instructions as directed in the OP. Steps 3-5 currently are where you flash the boot.img (kernel) you wish to use. It's either FXP's (which would be extracted from the ROM .zip), or Moljnir's or the other one listed. All three have working Clockworkmod recoveries now. At the time these instructions were originally written the recovery in FXP's kernel was busted, the next FXP build fixed it, and that's when I wrote the post you're referring to.

[NOOB FRIENDLY] GENERAL GUIDES for members

NOOB FRIENDLY!
Introduction:
I am not a full-time/professional developer, but i do make roms and apps for my personal use, so do not make any rom or app request! I decided to create this thread because i would like to help members of XDA forum who may not fully understands how somethings work. I have seen many people posting their question in some developers thread and the question is just left there unanswered for months, and that is pretty normal! The developers are very busy making all those roms and kernel for you guys! I personally feel that those problems should be fixed, so i decided to create this thread, just to answer you questions! Too lazy to type now... The end
Common question:
What is "rooting"?
- Well i know most of you might have came across this word before: "rooting." Rooting is actually the process of giving your lovely smartphones, tablets, the ability to gain "privileged control or root access." By giving the device root access users can freely write/replace the system application, and also control the cpu clock rate [OC/UC]. GUIDE OF HOW TO ROOT GALAXY NOTE 2 (N7100): coming soon
What is CWM [clockworkmod recovery]?
-CWM is a custom recovery for android smartphones and tablet. It allows you to do things that are not possible to do in the stock recovery. CWM allows you to do things such as flashing custom kernels and roms, it will also allow you to make a NANDROID backup which can be used to restore if you encounter any problem after flashing new roms or kernel. If you would like to know more about CWM try research in the internet you will find loads of information about it.
What are "custom roms"?
Custom roms are roms that are made by other developers that is not the manufacturer of the device, the roms are customized in the way the developers wants. Some of the famous custom roms are: Cyanogenmod, Miui, etc. Custom roms can be based on the device stock rom, or it can be based on the AOSP [android open source project] source, just like the Cyanogenmod. GUIDE OF HOW TO INSTALL CUSTOM ROMS: coming soon
What are GB/HC/ICS/JB?
These are the version of the Android OS:
GB: Gingerbread v. 2.3-2.3.7
HC: Honey Comb v. 3.1-3.2
ICS: Ice cream sandwich v. 4.0.x
JB: Jelly Bean v. 4.1.x-4.2.x

What should i do after rooting the device?
1. Stay with the boring stock rom that was made by your manufacturer.
or
2. Flash a custom rom and enjoy the smoothness and customization of the rom
Guide on how to flash a custom roms:
1. Download the rom you like: i would now like to breifly explain the difference between Aosp based custom rom and stock based custom rom.
Aosp [android open source project] rom:
-This type of rom are commonly known as "pure google roms" there will be no Touchwiz or SenseUI. The most famous Aosp based rom is the cyanogenmod rom. Aosp roms is most oftenly the lightest rom, but this does not mean that there is less customization. This type of rom will often gives better/faster performance than the stock rom, but however it can be less stable.
Stock based custom rom:
-Stock rom are roms that is made by your manufacturer, it is made specifically for your device. Developer will use this rom as a base and add some customization to the rom. Developer may also take out some things they do not like out of the rom, these are often known as "bloatwares." By using stock based custom roms, user will benefit from its stability, and some of the function made specifically for their device, e.g. S-pen functions.
Some link to the custom roms:

***There are more in the development section***
Aosp based roms:
Cm 10 and 10.1: http://get.cm/?device=n7100 *** if you are a beginner do not use 10.1 for now its still not stable ***
Jellybam: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996038
Paranoid Android: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970335
***There are more in the development section*** ALWAYS DO A MD5 SUM CHECK before flashing!!!
2. The rom you have downloaded should be in a .zip file ready for you to flash. DO NOT extract the file!
3. Connect your device to the PC (you do not need to turn it into download mode)
4. Copy the zip file into your INTERNAL sdcard (your phone storage), place it some where you can access it easily.
5. At this point make sure that your battery level is higher than 30% (i would recommend that it is fully charged or at least higher than half).
6. Reboot into CWM recovery [How? HOLD POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME]
7. If you are coming from stock rom or any other rom that is not the one that you will be flashing, you will need to make a full wipe!
8. DO A NANDROID BACKUP!=> go to backup and restore=>backup
9. Do a factory reset/data wipe
10. Wipe cache partition
11. advanced->wipe dalvik cache
12. Now it's time to flash the rom, to do this just select "install zip from sdcard" and then choose the .zip (your rom that you have downloaded) from you internal sdcard. ***Your rom that you have downloaded might use the aroma installer, just follow what it says and select what you would like to be installed.
13. DONE! *** first boot might take around 3-5 minutes, if you get a bootloop, try booting into recovery and do a full wipe and reflash the rom, if it still does not boot, go into recovery and restore from your NANDROID backup
14. Hit the "thanks" button!!!!!!!!

Q: If I root my device, will it add to the counter? I know it won't but just trying to make sure. From what I know, only flashing ROMs will add to the binary counter.
Also, how to do a MD5 SUM CHECK?
Lastly, I think you forgot to mention to flash GAPPS as well.
I suggest changing the thread title to 'newb friendly'. .lol
Noob is a guy who doesn't want to learn
scribbled from my note 2 (N7100)
You can grab some free md5 generators from the net, some of them can compare two files and tell you weather they are identical or not.
In your case, you need to compare the md5 of the downloaded file to the md5 of the original one on the server.
What's the point of comparing md5, just to make sure that you have EXACTLY the same file on your hard drive, because flashing corrupted files may damage your phone.

Using a Samsung N7100
Hi,
I bought a new Samsung galaxy note 2 GT-N7100.
I want to be able to remove the unecessary applications (such as Flipboard, Talk etc...)
People in XDA recommend me to root my phone but I think that I understood something: rooting a phone will just allow me to flash a CF on my phone (but will not allow me to remove apps that I dont want) am I right?
If I'm right, then it is impossible for me to keep the manufactured Rom and to be able to remove apps that i dont want.
Then, I should install CWM, root the phone AND install a CF for being able to remove what i want.
But the I want to keep the manufactured Rom on my phone and being able to remove what i want but it seems that is impossible.
I 'm...very confused and certain threat in the fora give me contradictory infos. I need to be sure.
You can root the stock rom and use titanium backup (or similar) to uninstall the aps you dont want. This is what I have done. No need to put a custom firmware on your phone. You dont even need CWM.

Rooting your phone is the first step for everything else.
Flashing CF will root your phone.(Some version of CF include a CWM some dont)
So you can, only root or root AND install a recovery(CWM)
To flash custom ROM or mods you need CWM but you don't need CWM if you just want to remove bloatware(unwanted apps).
Once your phone is Rooted you need an app to remove bloatware(Titanium backup is one of them)
Hope it helps
That is a great guide. Thank you.
Now that I have directions for rooting it using my mac, I'm going to try it.
What I want to do more than anything with root is to be able to make in app purchases. I don't understand why they have to make buying from outside the US so hard.
Anyway, I pray all the directions are there and are right as bricking the Note 2 would not be good.

[STOCK-ROM] [LB/UB] [4.4.4] [Pre-Rooted] C6603 10.5.1.A.0.283 GenericDE DualRecovery

Hi folks
To give something back to the community that always helps other users through countless useful roms, tipps and tweaks, I decided to make the ROM available that I just created to update my Xperia Z to the newest firmware version - Android 4.4.4 10.5.1.A.0.283. I was really annoyed from the bugs (laggy settings menu, battery drain, etc.) of the previous official 4.4.2 ROM, but this one - up to what I experienced until now - really runs like a charm again.
The creation of this firmware was no rocket science and probably most of you could have done it on your own. However, providing the ROM to you may save you some time and enables you a hussle-free update process since you don't have to combine all those tools like SuperSU and Dual Recovery on your own.
Here some facts:
Based on: Official 10.5.1.A.0.283_GenericDE for C6603 (obtained from here, thanks @AlexX-DE)
Pre-rooted using latest SuperSU v2.02 (obtained from here, thanks @Chainfire)
Latest Dual Recovery 2.7.154 Beta included (obtained from here, thanks @[NUT])
Flashable firmware file created using PRFCreator v0.5 (obtained from here, thanks @zxz0O0)
For your information: I came from this firmware from @[NUT] when installing this update.
To install this firmware:
Download this ZIP file
Extract it
Open the extracted folder Pre-Rooted_C6603_10.5.1.A.0.283_Generic_DE_DualRecovery
Connect your Xperia Z to your computer
Copy the flashable.zip onto your SD card
Disconnect your Xperia Z from your computer and turn it off (remember to have it charged to at least 50-70% battery power prior to flashing the firmware)
Boot into one of your existent recoveries - CWM or TWRP (I used TWRP)
Install the flashable.zip located on your SD card, wait for it to be successfully finished
(optional Clear cache/dalvik (I did it)
Reboot
IMPORTANT: Now wait! The reboot can take up to 10 minutes and eventually the screen might keep black showing nothing at the first startup.
When I flashed this firmware the first time and rebooted afterwards, it rebooted and vibrated, but the screen did not turn on for at least 5 minutes and I already thought I bricked it. But just when I started to panic and smash my head against the wall, the screen suddenly turned on and everything was perfectly fine again. It seemed that there was just a slight problem initializing the display for the first time after the flash while booting up and optimizing the apps (you know this process can take quite long, depending on how many apps are installed).
I tried to reproduce this error flashing the firmware again but I couldn't. After the next flash the screen worked fine even when starting the newly flashed firmware for the first time.
So remember, please don't panic when the first startup might take long and the display shows nothing as this is most likely only a temporary condition.
Nevertheless, I of course don't take responsibility for any potential damages or bricks that may be caused using this firmware, although I don't see major risks since it is the official release and I did not change anything at this firmware. Everything you do is on your own risk!
I know there is also a similar release by @luala, but he based his firmware on the swedish SG firmware, mine is based on the german generic DE firmware, so probably of special interest for people from Germany.
In case of any problems or questions, please ask here. Even though I'm no professional developer I'm sure we will find a solution.
If this post was useful to you, please show it by clicking Thanks!
Wish you a lot of fun with your lag-free Xperia Z running on 4.4.4!

Haha, hello Belgium, that's very good to hear and thanks a lot for sharing your experience!
And, how's the test going?
I'm not quite sure, but could it be that the battery management is not the best again? It's quite misleading, cause after flashing one always tends to using the phone more extensively than before, but somehow I got the impression that the power usage of "Android System" and "Android OS" is relatively high.
But as I said, my impression might be quite subjective - what do others say?
Hi,
flashed it and Xperia stays in black screen.
Had to flash the original ftf file and root it by myself.
But now I dont know which recovery works with 4.4.4 ^^
Have to find it now ^^
if you are rooted, Than install Flashtool and find Advanced stock kernel and flash it, you have your recovery. or try doomlord cwm recovery.
Thank you very much for this. I needed something like this because my C6616 doesnt have official 4.4.4 so far.
I followed your instructions and had no problems at all.
Thank you very much for the file.
Flashed it through CWM, only wiped cache after and worked perfectly! only issue I had was a missing baseband directly after rebooting but that was fixed after the second reboot (or just some time waiting).
Came from eXistenZ Ultimate 1.5.5
It worked!
Hi,
thanks to celsiusZ !!
I just flashed with TWRP, wiped cache/dalvik cache, rebooted. No black screen, reboot took about 2 minutes. All seems to work!
Greetz!
Danke!
I also flashed it on a pre-rooted phone (with locked bootloader) with t-mobile Austria branding using TWRP without any problems.
The phone is still rooted, SuperSU still works, as does TWRP.
Even after a factory reset everything works fine.
thx!
Nice thanks, perfect found on my Z :good:

Hi, just saw this message late. For me, the best route was to root the bell 4.4.2 I was on using the towelroot.apk and then flash the pre rooted latest rom. I remember 4.4.4 root being more complicated as outline here in the forums so I decided to skip that route.
Hi need help
I flashed your rom, im successful at doing it but, i cant use gplay and i cant hard reset my phone, i just want to ask if u can help me with it? And if i use the companion to repair the software it will be back at bsod state, sorry for the grammar TIA
