Hey guys,
So once upon a time, actually about a month ago, I had this great idea to root and flash CM on my AT&T GS4 on 4.3. Well I used Kingo Root and it went fine. But then came the flashing part. I went through all of the steps to get CM, until I saw to the "Downloading" Odin Mode screen and quickly realized the tutorial I used, did not take into the account I had a locked bootloader.. (Thanks AT&T..) Well I finally got out of that and quickly unrooted because I was scared of causing more damage.
Then came along the 4.4 KitKat OTA update which I desperately want. 4.3 is a disaster on my GS4. Anyways, after it downloaded and started to install, it restarted to the Odin Screen!! And so I got out of that.. again.. And now I'm back on 4.3 with no current issues. Except that I figured a factory reset would help me. Once again, it took me to the Odin screen and apparently I'm not going to be factory resseting either..
I really want to go to the exact way I got it. So I can start fresh and get the 4.4 update. I had seen where you could go into the recovery screen and select to wipe all data, but I'm not sure and do NOT want to lose my phone because it works right now.
So any thoughts?

The best way to prepare your previously rooted phone for the OTA official update is to Odin back to stock your current firmware.

This has seemingly completely reset my phone to factory settings which is what I wanted. I have not tried the OTA update yet, but I will try to post the results of that after I see how it goes.

Yup. Odin back to stock is the best way to go. Even if you decide not to take the official Kit Kat OTA update, you now have a fresh factory firmware installed. You can root, install Safestrap recovery & back up your stock rom (which I highly recommend) and flash custom roms, of which there is now some 30 + for our beloved MK2 S4. Either path you chose, you are going to be fine.

So here's the deal; I had my phone rooted with ForceROM before the recent OTA update. When the update came out, I couldn't install it because of the root. The constant notification to update was annoying me so I unrooted and installed the update (which may have been my downfall). Today, I tried to re-root using CWM (this method) and install TriForceROM, but my phone will not boot into recovery mode to finish the job. It goes to the Samsung screen with the "Recovery Booting..." in the top left corner, goes blank, and reboots as normal. I tried going completely bare-bones stock (unrooted then did a factory reset) and doing it from there but same results.
Is this something to do with the new update? Did I miss a step? Any help is appreciated. I'm just glad the phone isn't totally bricked.

So you are on MF9 then?
If so, go to the 'how to root video' thread, follow the instructions there on how to use CF Autoroot. Then Download goomanger and use it to install custom recovery.
Then you will have a recovery that you can use to flash what ever it is you are looking for.
However I really suggest you spend some time here, at xda, reading throug the stickies and how tos. Then go through the ROM threads and read some more before you turn you nice pretty phone into a paperweight.
Good luck.

Yes, I'm on MF9 xP I'll try that! Thanks
And I've done rooting and flashing ROM stuff since I've had a smartphone, I just couldn't figure this one out with the update and it being tricky enough to get root on this phone to begin with x_x

Hello all,
I have had my S4 for awhile now and need some help. When I first received it, I did some reading, rooted, did something that removed a triangle or a padlock, can't remember which one and made sure the AT&T software update was unable to run. At the time, custom recovery wasn't possible so I stopped there. So here I am now, rooted with MDL and I have no idea where to go from here to get the latest 4.3, although apparently I have the holy grail of firmware.
I've read as much as I possibly can, subscribed to the forums, GOOGLED, SEARCHED, RTFM and waited for someone else to come along and ask the very same question. Some did but those threads never really gave me the info I need to SAFELY flash my phone up to 4.3. So what do I do? All I need is some guidance, I follow directions well. Teach me! Please and Thank You
Doug
DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE IF YOU STILL HAVE MDL. ....U JUST NEED INSTALL CWM RECOVERY OR TWRP RECOVERY. .... AND THEN INSTALL CUSTOM 4.3 ROM. .... EVEN 4.4 KITKAT ROM. ..... BUT IF U DO UPDATE TO NEWEST MK2 FIRMWARE THEN U WOULD LOSE THE PRIVILEGE OF MDL..... WHICH IS RARE. ..... GOODLUCK

Right! One of the things I have learned is that I want to keep the MDL baseband. What I really want are all the improvements that 4.3 or 4.4 offer. Also, I'm hoping my Pebble and my S4 play better together than they do now.
Do I just pick a recovery? Are they the same? Guess I need to read some more.

As ted said, upgrading is bad. You can change modems and such to the MK2 baseband, it's the bootloader that's the issue. As long as you don't try to take any OTA's and don't ODIN any newer version you'll be fine. If you want to run the official AT&T 4.3, your closest bet is StockUp MK2 and the rebloat addon. Otherwise, you can choose either CWM or TWRP and flash away as long as you remember to use the loki patch for things that aren't patched already.
I've read the info at the link you provided before and wondered if I'm already rooted, what would happen? Is that safe to use if currently rooted?
Also, since I'm currently on MDL, would a factory reset return me to a fresh MDL or would it force me to update to current software?

Ok so I strated with the thread posted. I now have TWRP installed, nandroid backed up and all sorts of zips on my ext card. Also made Kies backups. My first ROM flash, Stockup_MK2 went fine until reboot and I had no mobile data or cell signal. What did i do wrong? I immediately did a restore from the nandroid backup to return to where was before.

Did you wipe before installing the rom? Just use the slider toggle in wipe. If so, check that the apn is setup correctly.

Hello, I don't post much as I read and find my answers but this one is sort of a doozy and don't want to waste time if it is unfixable.
So I tried to update my CynogenMod on my phone. I wanted to start off fresh install. I backed everything I wanted with Titanium. Anyways I seem to have rebooted my phone after being formated. It gave the warning that the root has been removed so I pressed the back button but I guess that means go ahead.
Now the phone won't boot into recovery mode. I see the Blue text show up but it just reboots again and then it just sits at the Samsung logo.
I found forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 but not sure if this just works with AT&T or every carrier. I am currently downloading my stock firmware but taking forever as it is huge. I do have a backup of my phone before I installed CynogenMod but not sure if I can use those with odin or even which file goes where.
Model is SGH-I337m
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!
So after working on this late into the night I got it back up and running. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 worked like a charm. All I had to do was download a stock rom for my carrier I found online. Rstored it to stock form then just started over again. Glad I made backups of all the apps still got Flappy Bird :good:
Finally got CM 11 with PGAPPS working.

Yeah, just be careful. The guide you followed is for the i337, our canadian variants are i377m. Completely different, glad it worked out for you though. And yes, flashing stock fw with odin will fix any boot issue/soft brick provided the device turns on, any lights at all and can always recover. There is also an unbrick creator script for fixing hard bricks on our devices as well.

Thanks for the information. I was pretty desperate last night I even tried adb sideband.
Hello,
I was playing around with my Note 3 LTE and I flashed (obviously) the wrong ZIP file which rendered my Phone function useless. I decided to re-flash the firmware to fix the problem.
I flashed the newest firmware for my phone, and it DID fix the problem. However, all my apps and settings are still here, the phone is still rooted, and my benchmark tests show that my phone is only 50% efficient compared to my pre-tinkering failed experiment.
I need help on how to do a CLEAN start, like when I first bought the phone. Is it doable via Odin? What do I need to do?

I did factory reset. It guided me through the phone settings again etc, but as soon as I booted the phone up it started automatically downloading my missing apps that were previously installed. AND my phone is STILL rooted. As I understood, flashing the firmware again should unroot the phone, and I should root it back again. I can't install busybox, for some reason, etc.
Thanks for your response. But don't be an elitist. I am learning, that's why I'm asking questions.

Hello all, I posted a similar topic a few days back, and cannot seem to find it. I fear it was deleted, but could be wrong. I only looked back a few pages in the history.
My problems have multiplied since that posting. I have nc4, when I bought my phone it was on there. Used towelroot and was able to root, download safestrap 3.75 and was able to add/delete slots, attempted to use hyperdrive, experienced a lot of weird things like my SMS would randomly not send, battery life was not spectacular, and just other misc things. IT seemed like I might have used a rom that could not be used properly for nc4. I then tried bajarom, which completely does not work for my phone, probably because it's nc2 and I didn't realize that?? Tried jellybeanz or whatever the exact name was, my phone won't even boot, says it successfully installed but sticks on the black screen.
Somehow over the past few days I managed to wipe my stock so I do not have the stock, thus I cannot go back.
I am sure I can find or maybe be directed to the stock firmware and reflash it.
I am not sure if it's possible but I'd really love to be able to get nc2, or if someone more knowledgable than myself could point out a solution for me, I would like to have a custom rom if theres one that would work properly on my phone.
Another confusion I have, with the nc4, am I able to use odin to flash a different radio, should I even bother? I would sincerely appreciate someone who would help clear some of this up for me, I'm pretty novice as you can see. Thanks in advance.
update
I guess my question is unclear. I really can use some help if anyone would be so obliged.
I am trying to use ADB to push the file over, it says access denied, I was previously rooted and verified as much. My issue is I need a way to send the roms over to my SD or my regular phone internal mem so I can at least load a rom. Currently my phone is bricked and I am just getting very upset, I really could use someone to give me a bit of guidance.
I opened the cmd with admin and it's still saying access denied. IS there a way to force the phone to open as a media device via cmd? That way I can edit sd card info and push on there what needs to go?
I am currently trying to find a way to get hyperdrive, or another rom over.
I have beanstowns rom on there, it appears as .zip yet when I try to install from safestrap I end up exploring the directory, as opposed to just being an option I can choose.
Baja is the same way, both are still on my sd, yet for whatever reason I cannot select them to install them.
Hope is not lost.
I think your initial problem was that you tried using rom slots. It specifies in the Safestrap OP that rom slots are only supported on NC2 bootloader. Since you are on the NC4 bootloader you cannot go backwards, however you can flash the NC2 kernel if you want to run a custom rom, you simply need to use the stock slot alone.
Since I know very little about ADB & Terminal CMD, I will try to give you directions to get up and running the way I know how.
First you'll need to reflash the stock NC4 tar via odin and reroot. Files can be found here.
Since you've flashed a couple different roms that have probably messed with the system settings I would do a factory reset before rerooting.
After you are up, running and rooted, follow the instructions here to get on the NC2 kernel.
Once you've completed these steps you will be on the NC4 bootloader with the NC2 kernel and be able to flash a custom rom in the stock rom slot. Only a NC2+ rom will function so make sure it is based on NC2/NC4 (i.e. jelly 'beans' will not run on NC2+ firmware as it is based on MJE).

firstly, thank you so much for the reply.
I did flash nc2 kernal, but was confused when I still saw nc4 in the about section. I flashed with odin NC2_modem_kk.tar and nc2kernel.tar.
The issue I was having is with hyperdrive, and baja I had some serious issues, so I assumed it was because I was using them incorrectly, ie didn't install one of the above files correctly, or did something else wrong in the process. Just for example, with hyperdrive, my sms would just stop sending/receiving/ double sending. My sim card was not being recognized. And a whole lot of other issues.. So I kept messing around and now im at a point where nothing boots up, I cannot reflash, and I'm just stuck.
I will follow your link and attempt to do as you said, will wipe, and then will try again.

Alright, I applied to nc4 and did a factory reset, made sure all my slots were deleted (had 2). Then factory reset and rebooted, saw safestrap, pressed continue, and i'm looking at a blank screen now as though there is nothing to boot to. I was under the impression factory reset would undo all and it has not.
Did I do something wrong, or am I missing something?
