AT&T S4 Shuts off after 3 seconds - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello All,
My S4 constantly shuts off after 3 seconds. Lets say the phone is off, and I just plug the usb cable into, the battery icon comes on, but then it shuts off after 3 seconds. If I try to go into download mode, its get there, but then shuts off.
I had the MDL Firmware on it with Loki and it was working fine. Now I just want to flash back to stock, but the phone wont stay on long enough. I also tried different batteries.
Any idea on whats wrong or how I can successfully flash back to stock

First thing I would check is to see if your power button is stuck......

I actually charge my batteries in a standalone charger and I my gf has an S4, so the batteries are confirmed to be at 100%.

Have you found a solution? I experience something similar: phone shuts down after the Galaxy S4 logo, or 3 sec after it enters download mode using a jig connector.

A way to repair

I suppose I have found what the problem is: after I have slightly hit the phone over my hand palm, I've realized it returned to function normally. But after a couple of hours the problem has return. So I tried to do that again and suddenly the vibrator stopped working. I make it short: several more attempts gave me a combination of improper functioning with or w/o the vibrator. So I had removed it completely and the phone started working OK. I have put it back and now the phone works OK. I believe the problem was in a bad contact with the vibrator. I'll keep playing with the phone for several days, and if it's OK I declare repair is 100% succeed.

[A] Your Galaxy Tab acts dead suddenly.

Hi,
Yesterday my Galaxy Tab suddenly went dead ... disconnecting/reconnecting
the charger ... removing/putting back SIM ... removing/putting sdhc ....
trying all possible button combinations while pressing the power on button ...
it didnt work ... My Tab was dead ...
I was looking up service centers adresses till i found by accident this mail :
www_mygalaxytab_net/samsung-galaxy-tab-how-to/a-dead-gt/
I followed his tip :
Keep power on pressed while touching the screen
The battery indicator pops up.
The Tablet reboots.
Everything goes back to normal.
I just wanted to share this information in case the same happens to one of you.
A great year to you all.

Dead Tab
This morning it happened to me: a dead Tab.
To bad, your tip didn't work for me so I am going to the Samsung service center which is (lucky for me) near to my house.
Hope to learn more there because it seems I am not the only one with this problem.
Problem solved. Press the on button and count to ten.
My Tab is working again.

U r a lifesaver kvanlier ! It happened to me just now and ur tip solved my dead tab. I nearly wanted to open up the tab to remove the battery and reset it. Thanks again.
If the were karma point here you would be a God , Thanks for saving me a trip to the Service center.
That happened to me two days ago. Got up in the morning and the tab would not turn on. Nothing I did worked so I took it back to TMO and they gave me a new one. Lucky for me I was still with in the 30 day buyers remorse bracket. But now I am wondering! If it happens I will at least give your remedy a try.
Just to make an update on this topic, I notice that when you got absoluted zero charge, my Tab only came back to life while using Samsungs own charger. USB port of my computer alone was not able to charge it back.

I can confirm this. My Tab appeared completely dead.
It had been running a CPU intensive test app while plugged into USB and was obviously using power quicker than it was charging.
There was no low battery warning - presumably because it was plugged in and therefore thought it was charging.
Plugging it into the mains brought up the charging screen. USB alone was not enough to get it to begin charging from completely flat.
Had me panicked for a few minutes
Thanks all for the useful tips.
I have also experienced some weird phenomena when the tab is solely plugged into a USB port. It will on occasion "play dead". Charging the Tab using the wall wart solves this issue. Unfortunately, I've yet been able to determine the root cause.

FANTASTIC!!! Thanks a bunch!
I was away from home when my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Running Galaxy Task 14) started acting like it was bogged down or in a program loop. So I decided to re-boot and, I'll be damned if there wasn't ANYTHING I could get to work. No CWM, No Download state, Nothing, Nada. Just a Black Screen.
I new the battery was freshly charged, so I didn't figure that was the problem.... Never-the-less, I was without my Tablet for the rest of the day.
Once I got home and had internet service from my computer I found your post and VOILA! Fixed in about 15 seconds.
THANKS AGAIN!!!
I bricked my GTab two weeks ago (I flashed wrong ROM from other phone). It was totally dead. No power on, download mode or recovery. The trick with charging and press power button for 10 seconds or more didn't work.
Then I tried UltimateUnBrickRessurector and flash the JPI ROM. Nothing happened. Out of frustration I ran UltimateUnBrickRessurector again until it put GTab in download mode and flashed JQ1 ROM. Suddenly the camera LED flashed brightly. However power on was still not possible. I flashed JQ1 again and it worked!
I don't know whether this affects only my GTab, but I could only resurrect it after I flashed older ROM than I had. I hope this helps anybody.
exactly what happened to me yesterday, u saved me money and time thanks
thank you so much!

My Epic came unplugged, now its bricked.

If this is asked else were I apologies as I did a search but could not find anything. Short story, my Epic came unplugged before Odin3 finished. Now I cannot get the phone to power on. It will not go into download mode or recovery. I pulled the battery and hit vol. up and power, but nothing happens. I am just about sure there is no hope for the phone, but it is worth a shot. Does anyone know if it is possibly to fix a bricked phone that will not turn on?
Thanks
Will it go into download mode again? do a battery pull and try to go back to download mode. does the samsung logo show when you boot the phone?
I pulled the battery, and still nothing. When I try to power it never comes to life, no logo nothing its like I do not have a battery in it when I hit the power button, but the battery is fully charged.

Download mode: Slide out the kbd, hold the 1 key, press and hold the power button on the side until you get the download screen with the yellow caution triangle and the ditch digger guy...
Holding power and 1 also does nothing.
I think pulling the plug while ODIN is running is literally the only way you can brick this phone, other than running it over with a car.
Did you have full batterywhen you started? Does odin recognize the com port when you plug the phone in?

I did have full batterywhen I did it, but I was using my laptop and went to move causing my phone to fall and become unplugged before it was finished. I just tried plugging in the phone again and nothing came up Odin did not recognize it.
I have had to unplug the phone while odin was running several times because it stopped progressing with the flash. I have been lucky enough to never have a total brick. I would suggest pulling the battery and hitting keys on the keyboard to ensure the power is completely drained, the putting in the battery while holding the 1 key and power.... Always does the trick for me.
You are making sure the phone its in download mode and odin is running before plugging your phone in, right?

Oh my; that sucks. I hope you can get it replaced without any issues.
Good luck, with the next one. Tie it to the desk during the Odin process.
You said you pulled the battery then hit Vol. Up and power...
To get into recovery you need to hit Vol. Down + Camera + Power (hope you had a Backup)
Even after pulling the battery it still will not come back to life. I was at the sprint store and told them that I was doing the over the air update and this is what happened. The tech told me that he has seen a few Epics turn into bricks because of the update went wrong. I will have a new one on Monday but it was worth a try to see if there was a fix since the phone they let me use sucks. Now I will be a little scared putting roms on my phone once I get my new one. Thanks for the help anyway.

Don't be. What happened to you is next to impossible. If you don't chuck your phone around while Odining, it won't happen again.

Yes... ODIN + ADHD is not a good combination
Your phone is not bricked. I had this scenario happen to me. The way I got the phone working again is to take the battery out and then plug the USB cable in. At that point I was able to have the keyboard open, hold down the 1 key+power and the phone went in to dload mode. It worked for me, I am betting it would work for you.
I forgot to mention, leave the battery out of the phone while doing this.
Socos25 I have to say I had hope for this, but I still have the same problem…… however, still nothing but a blank screen that is darker then the bottom of the ocean.
I feel your pain, buddy.
I hate to admit it, but I did the same thing when my phone was 29 days old. In my case I think I started by using the wrong PID file and the process hung. I got worried and unplugged the phone after about 2 minutes. I tried every combination possible to get the phone to wake up but each time it got worse. There was no way to get it back into download mode.
I ended up taking it to a Sprint service center. The tech was sure he could reflash it, but after 20 minutes he came back and said it was dead. Since it was under 30 days they gave me a new phone. Thank you Sprint.
Anyway, I'm pretty nervous these days when using Odin. It IS possible to brick this phone using Odin (as we both know). When I use Odin now I triple check every step, do it on a laptop with a full battery, put the phone down and step away from it until it's finished.
It's likely that if you take it to a Sprint service center they will replace it for a $35 fee. That may be your only option at this point.
Thinking back.. Pull the battery, hold down the power button for like 10 seconds. Then with the battery out of the phone plug in the USB cable. try the 1+power button.
I am pretty sure tha is how I got mine back after I accidently dropped the phone when odin'ing. Does the LED light up when you plug in the usb cable?
I've pulled my phone over 20 times turing an ODIN process to try and brick it. It just doesn't happen with these Samsung phones. You may get stuck at the Samsung screen, but chances are if that you battery is either dead or you keyboard is broken. Cause through 5 phones with trading I can't seem to brick one.

my device has just quit workin all together

my att g2 4.2 rooted stock rom worked normally last night, this morning I plugged it into the car charger and it displayed it was charging with 2% charge present. I pressed the power button the boot animation began I set it down and when I picked it back up a few minutes later to use it...well nothing...the charging indicator led wasn't lit and when I pressed the power button LG appeared for only a split second then went black. when I plug it in same thing, LG logo for a brief second then disappears. I haven't done anything recently except xposed modules, no flashing of anything. any ideas? thank you guys
It happened to me (on other devices) when I let them discharged too far. Just allow it to charge awhile then try to hold the power button
for 10-20secs ... The NookHD+ were the worst in this situation (it won't charge sometimes, I had to plug/unplug a few times to initiate a charge, I was almost about to RMA one of them).
something else that's odd
when I plugged my device into my laptop the laptop acted like I just plugged in 12 different things that all needed to have their disk formatted. what is going on? wierd

try charging the device in offline mode ( turn it off and let it charrge for a while) and then turn it on . mind wouldnt turn on because of very low charge yesterday. doing this helped
update
I let it charge for several hours, nothing...it appears to be in some kind of boot loop. I can't turn it off all the way, I hold the powwer button for tensec or so and the LG will appear for a second then disapear and then the back light stays on. oh ya, when I plugged it in a few hours ago it wouldn't turn on but the red LED was flashing. I'm not sure how long it stayed on, but it was off when i got back to it several hours later. thank you for your time fellas!
If you can get to recovery at all, leaving it on charge in there. Has saved me in a similar situation.

Could have been the power switch that makes the phone short circuit and goes off anytime.

Thank you sirs, unfortunately still no good
it sounds like you had the same thing as everyone else yesterday that had twrp installed and the carrier automatically updated the system.
I could not get my phone recognized by the laptop and had to use pdanet drivers, which finally worked, but I still had to dig for the device. then had to flash back to stock. There is a pretty good thread on this topic, already. Search for it in the developer section. Do not skip any steps, such as setting the date back to jan2012 and turning off the internet. go slow and methodically, or you will miss a step and get frustrated.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Bricked?!?!? HELP!!!

So this is my first post because I can normally find what I'm looking for, except for in this case.
First off my phone, Galaxy S4 Model SGH-I337 running Android 4.2.2 rooted. No custom rom installed, i.e. Cyanogenmod. I recently bought some new batteries and a new charger which I had been using for about two weeks before my problem arose.
I came home one night plugged my phone in to charge and woke up to find it unresponsive. I tried a battery pull and found my phone turns on for about 3 seconds showing the samsung custom screen with the padlock only to shut off again. Same thing happens not matter how many times I perform a battery pull. I tried plugging into my computer but the phone is not detected.
I tried a battery pull and booting into safe mode and debugging mode but the phone just shuts off after 3 seconds no matter what.
I'm not sure if this is a true hard brick since when I perform a battery pull the phone starts and the buttons seem to work, at least enough to enter safe or debugging mode.
I have not seen any threads where the phone momentarily turns on after battery pull only to shut off quickly.
Has anyone run into this problem before and is there anyway to fix it???

The phone didn't brick itself. So, if you didn't do anything to it and just found it that way (as you said), I would think it is a hardware problem either with the phone or the battery. Have you tried a different battery? If you rule out a defective battery, I would say it is a hardware problem with the phone.

This right here ^
My friend has a T-Mobile GS4 and same thing happened to him. It would only turn on when he would pull the battery and put it back in, but it would turn off soon after. Turns out his power button was jammed. He went and go it replaced.
Try this: Pull your battery and put it back in. If your phone turns on momentarily without you pressing anything then the power button is the problem.

There's disassembly guides/videos if you want to try, you could search that and just take a look at the mechanism.

S7 Bricked? Won't boot, doesn't appear to charge

As title states, have a sm-g935f running stock firmware that won't boot.
Had issues with it freezing and rebooting so re-flashed stock firmware, has run fine for approximately 3 weeks now when suddenly, whilst installing swiftkey it froze, then turned off. Had roughly 50% charge at this point. Have googled for hours now, tried different button combinations for varying lengths of time to try to boot. Have left it to charge for 2 hours and have just had another crack at it. Charge indicator does not appear on screen when plugged in, led at top of display does nothing at any point.
I'm out of ideas at this point, really could use the expertise of the greater xda community now, this is my only phone and its unusable right now leaving me connectivity-ly stranded.
Thanks in advanced for the help guys :cyclops:
Can u boot into Recovery mode?
No, it does nothing at all. It won't even attempt to turn on
So brick it is.
Boot it into Download mode by pressing Vol Down + Home key and Power Key. Then open Smartswitch app click preferences and click emergency recovery follow the steps then
I also had this problem. Basically you need to follow SjDU. If you cannot get into download mode. Try and leave the phone uncharged for 24 hours. Then charge for about 30 min and try to get into download mode.

Why thank you, so helpful
Thanks guys, ill leave for 24 hours, i just have no way of knowing whether its uncharged or not, it really gives nothing at all regardless of what i do. Not even a slight vibrate when i plug it into a charger or pc.
regardless, ill leave it and report back
Thanks
Hi,
It seems to me that it's really dead, give a try at leaving it uncharged for a few hours and then trying again.
However I wouldn't hold my expectations up, I had a similar problem with the Galaxy S4, phone was constant freezing after a Stock flash (I was using custom ROM before), then tried to restart the phone, phone got stuck and removed battery. Turned out bootloader died and I had to flash it again using JTAG (S4 was pretty easy to open up).
I hope that you won't need to use a JTAG Flash, since it needs to open the device and obviously S7 is pretty hard to get to the circuit. An easy option is trying an USB JIG to get to download mode (that is, if your phone has charge - hence you will need to try first the option others suggested - and a working bootloader), you can easily find this device for less than 5 dollars on eBay.
Hope you get your beloved device working again.
All the best,
~Lord
