[Q] Grey bezel in the screen - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know why it has this grey bezel on the actuall screen? Something to do with the waterproofing? It looks ugly imo...

There's no gray bezel. That's just the image, check some videos on youtube, you'll see there's no gray bezel on any of them.

Yes there is a grey band/bezel on the screen. On any hands-on video! Just hard to see with crappy lights and quality video.

Probably waterproofing where Gorilla Glass meets the sides.

Yeah i think so too... Looks like the white one does not have this band.

Perhaps light bending through the glass making it look grey?
Anyway, is this even something to be worried about? Seriously?

Really weird Screen/Glass problem

OK, so i just noticed something really weird on the screen of my Nexus S. Towards the bottom of the screen, right under those 4 touch buttons where the glass meets the housing, i see these grey stains. The stains are on the inside and i feel like it's the glue that was used to install/paste the glass. I think those grey stains on the inside are all around the glass but i can only see them on the top and bottom.
Anyone noticed something similar?
Any suggestions?

The glass is thicker at the top and bottom. I think that is what you're seeing. I just looked at mine in the light, and to me, it just looks like the edge of the glass. Just the nature of the curved glass imo.
I had a bit of glue around the edges of my screen. I just stuck some Scotch tape around the edges to pull it off.
i took my phone back to best buy. the guy there told me that this is a pretty common problem not only with nexus s but evo 4g also. he let me check about 6 devices (not exagerating) before making an exchange and i was quite surprised to see all those screens with some sort of defect around the top and the bottom. i picked the one that looked the best and went home satisfied.

Aluminum frame?

Is the frame anodized aluminum? and does it peel?
I'm thinking about buying the black SP and changing the frame with the frame from the white model which I assume is pure aluminum? unless they coated it white
So:
1. The frame is just coated aluminum but it doesn't peel, coating holds very well.
2. If you want to change the frame, you must also change the screen (glass), they're connected (glued?) together

i think its not aluminum, umm i use it without any protection and here are some pics of the frame and the screen
[They are in the 7zip file , cuz they were too big and above the upload limit as a jpg file]
It is aluminum, but not anodized. The paint pells off after several months (5-6 months), like in my unit. I used to have a white model and the aluminum was painted too, just like my current black model. However, now that the paint is peeling off, I can confirm that below the painting, the aluminum is still black, but I guess it's just ugly black.

Good to know, maybe I'll buy a 2nd frame and just remove all the paint.
I don't know how great would that go. I personally wouldn't remove it, as we don't know how great the aluminum by itself could stand. Not to mention that removing the paint could damage the aluminum too.
However, the idea of having a black model with white aluminum sounds pretty awesome to me. I wanted to do something like that before. Maybe I'll do so in the future. Anyhow, good luck. Make sure to post results.

I don't care what anybody says, that bezel is straight up purple. Just like the ugly galaxy s3 one.

Couldn't find a smaller knife? Geesh #machete
Well that confirms it.
The midnight blue has a slightly blueish/purpleish tone to it's trim.
Guess im getting white...
The phone is BEAUTIFUL! I myself am more interested in the white ver but the tinted aluminum trim doesn't look bad at all imo. And I'd venture to say that silver trim/frame with the dark blue back might be to contrasty
I still can't tell if the metal part is dark gray or freaky blue
It's beautiful, but it has the slightest blue tint.
To start with, @20degrees, Think you need to remember what a "Bezel" is. You were saying the bezel looks purple, and my first thought was "No.... i'm pretty sure the bezel is black... like on most other phones". What you mean is the metal trim/frame/whathaveyou.
I, personally, would still rather avoid the white like the plague. I've never been a fan of the look of white phones (not to mention just worrying about the color itself, with potential discoloration from the plastic itself or from stuff rubbing against it i.e. pants material, etc...), and i actually quite like the purple-ish look to the metal frame of the Nexus 6. I mean... it's called "Midnight Blue".... not "Blue".
Im getting a white but not because of the purple thing cause I like that actually, but because of the blue back being a fingerprint magnet. But if they only have blue at launch then ill gladly settle for that. But Goodness gracious this phone is so beautiful!
How hard can it be for them to launch a damn Black phone ... Blue nexus Google really ?

I've had four whit phones and none of them have ever showed any signs of discolouring so don't worry about that.

Did he say it doesn't have the soft touch back? Does anyone know the texture of the white or blue?

Whatever. The bezel to me is what's around the screen.
The trim is purple. Who cares really? It's purple....

That's why I prefer the white, hate the blueish bezel, I had the blue S3 and didn't like the blue bezels. What they should have done was to to give options to change the back cover like the moto x to give it even more personalization......just a thought.
I have the Moto X 2014, it has the same trim around the edges & it's a gray/silver color from a distance I guess the black front can give that color look, but in reality it is gray.
Some girls are hot from a distance. I care what they look like up close. Lol

Light bleed on the edge part of the screen?

I'm I the only one noticing there are some pretty obvious light bleed going on if looking at the phone from the side? I never had any edge device before, so I'm not sure if this is normal. I don't really notice it at all if I'm looking at the phone straight, only when I'm actually looking at its edge. The effect is even from the left and right side.
Sorry for the crappy pic, I already returned my JOD note 5 to Tmobile, so I had to dig out a real old LG optimus F6 with its crappy 5MP camera... reminds me of how much smart phone camera have came along..
This is my first EDGE as well, but it looks normal to me. The edges the light has to be pointed upwards and with the glass being curved it cause more light to refract and build up so it looks "worse" than it really is(At least that's how I saw it).
I'd guess that due to the curved glass, the glass would refract the light causing it to look like this.
Afaik an amoled display can't actually leak light since every pixel is actually the light rather than an LCD where it uses a backlight. Instead as others have pointed out, you are just seeing the refraction caused by the curved glass and the way it bends the light being emitted.
Ahh physics gotta love it ?
This is not a bleed
Because the panle is on the edge and you looking at it from the side so tge light will be direct .

great point. I forgot all about that.
Yup that's normal. All previous edges had the same.

I notices this the other day especially on bright white screens the edges between glass/aluminum frame bleed light thru. I have this on my wifes S7 edge as well as mine.

OK cheers good to know it's not just mine. Seems a bit odd how water resistant phone would allow light out in such a way if light can get out surley water can get in.

If I had to guess, this is most likely not light leaking through the crack, but rather just some light thats being manipulated by the curved glass and reflected onto the metal where it meets the glass. At least that's my best theory.

I wish that was the case my friend. I first thought that so I taped the sides of the screen to block the light and still comes beaming through both sides.
If light is bleeding thru the cracks does that necessarily mean its not water proof anymore? If so we have a big problem as both mine and my wifes phone has this issue. Although we aren't dipping our phones in water or going to test it out, its nice to know that they are indeed waterproof.
Take a photo. I'd like to see it.

Well what im referring to wshouldnt be affected by tape. I mean the light essentially uses the glass like fiber optic and shines out onto the top of the metal.
Taping it off wouldn't effect this since the light we would be seeing is essentially in the glass still.

Just go to a white background on max brightness and hold the phone flat and look at where the glass meets the metal at like a 45 degree angle from above. You should be able to see it sort of lit up.

That's light passing through the glass and not any type of gap. Taping off areas isn't going to affect the light reflecting through the glass.

sharp edges?

Hey guys!
Just received this awesome piece of technology, called oneplus 6t!
Now I just have one point that makes me wonder if it is absolutely normal: do you also have sharp edges? I mean the plastic between the display and the metal frame. It has a small sharp border on all 4 edges.

Ive taken off screen protectors that have come with OnePlus devices for the longest time because of the sharp edge feel.
Turns out the 6T has a terribly sharp bumper between the aluminum rail and front glass, so now with the screen protector and the protruding bumper, we have double the sharp edges.
Its the sole reason why i havent removed the screen protector this time lol, why get rid of a sharp edge if im still gonna feel it no matter what.
Its super annoying -_-
If you're feeling that second edge, you're swiping WAY too low on the screen.
