[Q] [HELP] Can't get into CWM - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i recently flashed my defy with MIUI V4 from stock ROM.Now i can't get into CWM by pressing power button and volume + button.Actually i'm getting into Android System Recovery and there's some Error shows up
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/caller
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log.
What should i do?i want to flash Cynogen 7 because in MIUI V4 tether doesn't work.
Can i use the Android system recovery wipe data/factory reset to wipe current ROM and flash new?
Sorry for my bad English

Well, i can't help on that error, maybe someone else can). But with android system recovery you mean the stock recovery!? (the one with an exclamation point in an triangle and droid symbol - probably recovery <3e>) From here you can't flash unofficial roms (see documentation thats widely available) but you can flash the official build and then use famaroot + 2ndinit resp. flash those 2 builds (check at least: guide and wiki) to achieve same result and then you can enter 2ndinitdefy bootloader/recovery menu. Now you can wipe and install your rom (caution: if you fully wipe don't reboot till some recovery is on board, you might use safewipe, and check you meet all requirements for your rom - some need preinstalls)

Thanks dude.I'll try those!

E: Can't open /cache /recovery/command

I rooted my hero using Universal Androot - v1.6.1
I had fun playing around with it but now I want to upgrade the CM6 ROM. When I go to flash the radio in the recovery mode (Home + Power)
I get:
Code:
"Android system recovery <2e>" at the top
restart option
flash via update.zip
Factory wipe
clear cache
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
If I put the update.zip in the root of the SD card and try to upgrade I get an error stating that the signature is not correct.
I am running software 2.27.651.6
Am I having this issue because I am running the updated version.
Do I need to revert to 2.27.651.5 ?
What am I missing here?
Anyone have any ideas?
I have the same problem. Anyone have some ideas?
You have to flash a custom recovery. Easiest way, go to market and download rom manager, in the app there is an option for flashing clockwork recovery.

Did it, works.
Thanks.

Failed an installing ROM / CWM fail ....looking for guidance.

I managed to root correctly but when trying to install a custom rom via CWM I keep getting the following error
E: Cant mount /dev/....
E:/ can mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted
My rom is on my SDcard and I loaded CWM via ODIN because ROManager wasn't working well.
What can I do to get this new ROM installed?
You don't need to root to install a rom.
Are you running stock OTA now I take it?
What ROM are you trying to flash?
The stock kernel reflashes the recovery every boot, so for your intial flash you need to ODIN the correct CWM Recovery, three finger into recovery. (If it boots without going to recovery, you have to start over and re-odin over the recovery). Then flash the rom you are trying to use.
Flash CWM in through Odin, directly after---> before you power up press both vol buttons and power button down to go to CWM.
Once there you go to install zip from sd card.
Actually, you only need to hold Volume Down. At least based on what I've experienced. Save the energy
I always hold all three down and let the Samsung flash once on the screen, never fails to enter recovery mode.

[Q] Please help me, error while flashing

Hi guys, I hope you can help me.
I have just rooted + flashed my motorola defy plus for the first time (on any device for that matter)
I installed 2nd init, version 0.6.... or something.
Put a rom, kernel and google apps on my sd-card
Then I turned usb-debugging off and rebooted my phone.
Now I can get into bootmenu, and this is what I do:
1) go to recovery
2) select custom recovery
3) then it says: Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.1.8
E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
4) I then select wipe data/factory reset
5) then it says this: Formatting DATA
Formatting CACHE
FORMATTING SDEXT
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext
Formatting SDCARD:/.android_secure
Data wipe complete
E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
6) After that i select install zip from sdcard
7) then I select choose zip from sdcard
8) then I select the zip file containing the rom
9) And it says: Finding update package
Opening update package
Installing update
E: Can't make /tmp/update_binary

Now I can't go any further and can't use my phone at all

Thanks to the previously backup I can use may phone as usual.

Does you disabled the usb debugging before flashing?
Yes I do, but nothing change,
Thanks
if I'm not mistaken the last release of 2nd init is not compatible with defy. Try to check this on the development forum. I hope I have been of help.
I'd tried with both 1.0.7 latest and 0.6.1.
With latest, the phone is blocked.
Thanks
I had used this. Try with it
P.S. sorry for my bad english.
Tried, the same errors,
Thanks
I don't know. Sorry. By the time i had used that.
I think you need to go to stable recovery after you wipe your data from custom recovery

I think you need to go to stable recovery after you wipe your data from custom recovery
What do you mean by "stable recovery"? You talk about version 0.6. of 2nd init or something else?
Can you show a step-by step procedure?
Thank you in advance.
However, which is the procedure to un-root a defy+ and to have it with the original, fresh system?
I had flash a new SBF, root with Unlockroot v2.3, anything else doesn't work, 2ndinit v2.0 stable, wipe data/cache/dalvik (same errors), try to install cm9-ics, the same error "Can't make /tmp/update_binary"
What the f.....?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem.. Trying to find a solution but is quite difficult. First I thought it has something to do with the partitioning, as stated in THIS topic. But, in THIS topic, people say that partitioning the SD card is not necessary at all..
@Cretu22: Yes stable recovery is CWM 0.6
Don't install stable recovery! I too faced this issue when I flashed using stable recovery. In snd init install Latest recovery and then try flashing your ROM. That should work..
I did choose the stable version indeed 0.6.7.
Now i did uninstall it and installed the latest 1.0.7, but when I reboot my phone it won't get into the boot menu but just boots into android. Tried it several times, but only with 0.6.7 I seem to be able to get in the menu

Okay!! I hope you were pressing the volume down button when the blue LED came?? Try doing this again all over.. I mean reinstall 2nd init and then latest recovery.. I remember doing this once(instal latest recovery after I installed stable recovery)..

Yes, its working Pressing the volume down button was not necessary with 0.6.7, that was what went wrong. Now the zips installed like a charm
i know the answer and is very simple
the problem is that you cannot create that specific folder.... because it already exist, cmp (connected music player) creates it, just delete it from SD and done!

Dont have stable recovery or restore. Seems ruined recovery partition. Help!

I read this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702
and I was eager to try to have Android 4.1 on Defy. Amazing that this guys put it on the defy.
I read the FAQ where it says;
Your phone has to be roooted.
► If this is the first time that you install custom rom (if you have stock froyo) you'll have to do some other things before this procedure. Please search the forum.
► Download all the files that you need and put them on the sdcard.
► Charge your phone until you have 80-100% battery.
► Make a backup of your apps and a nandroid backup of your rom (everything you have on your phone will be deleted).
It was rooted I have stock froyo, it doesnt say what to do before the procedure. I Imagine that it means that I need a Kernel for 2.3 or above.
I made a backup of apps with Titanium and I installed System recovery apk ( defy-recovery-1218-0326). I think this is Clockworkmod recovery... but not really sure, very nooby.I reboot the phone and back it up.
then I re read the part that says that i have other things before installing 4.1, so I decided to download CM9 kernel and sndinitdefy2.0 apk. I run the apk. After it booted in development mode i change the 2nd init with the recovery menu. then reboot again.
After that the screen only showed the Motorola Logo with a black screen.
I screwed up. So I decided to install RSD lite 5.6 to flash the original Froyo rom again to see if it works.
It did, I flashed it back, then I installed all over again, but when trying to install defy-recovery 1218 it fails.
so I looked for sndinitdefy and found the 2.3 version which i installed.
So now, I have stock froyo working again and sndinitdefy 2.3 installed, but dont know if its ok.
When I boot in developer mode, the screen says:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Android System recovery 3e
Android system recovery utility (which is unreachable with the volume keys.)
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
and then at the botom
e: cant open /cache/recovery/command
e: cant open/cache/recovery/caller.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, I cant even recovery my aplication data because its not on the recovery menu.
Also in the FAQ it says go stable recovery. I dont know how to do that or what to install or to do.
1) Go to Stable Recovery.
2) Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and go to advanced ► Wipe dalvik.
3) Go to Install zip from sdcard ► Choose zip from sd card.
4) Flash CM9 Kernel (JUST FOR DEFY RED LENS USERS).
5) Flash CM10-2012xxxx-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip.
6) Flash Gapps and Battery fix for red lens.
7) Wipe Cache and Dalvik again (recommended).
8) Restart.
2- it doesnt have advanced to wipe dalvik.
3-I have defy but red lens. it says to flash cm9 kernel, i imagine that i have to do it from install zip from sdcard and have the file on the phones root.
Anyway, my recovery screen is not ok and im not sure what to do. Can anybody help!?
narrowing the stuff.
I have Android 2.2 and a red lens defy with a faulty recovery menu sndinitdefy 2.3 and i want to install Android 4.1. Also I want to be able to go back if there is any trouble. please let me know how to go forward from here.
Also it would be great if I have the backup/restore menu in the recovery so I can restore my apps, but dont know how to do that.
Or maybe I should flash the CM9 kernel with RDS lite as i did with 2.2... but then again, i dont know if that is a fixed SBF or what, i dont want to screw my phone...
Thanks!
Ok, problem solved! I had to wait for the blue led to enter sndinitdefy2.3. I was entering elsewhere, To the Normal recovery I think.
installed from Custom Recovery instead of Stable Recovery. Stable Recovery was not available,but it worked perfectly for me, now running Android 4.1 and its AWESOME.

Defy+ Boot Loop after installing 2ndInit !!!

Hi everyone.
This is my first post here.
First of all, I apologize for my bad english.
I have a Defy+ running android 2.3.4 and decided to upgrade android version using CM10 (Jelly Bean), but now I'm stucked in a boot loop...
I did the following steps:
- first rooted the phone using ROOT Genius;
- installed 2ndInit (vs 2.3) from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212);
- put CM10 (zip) and GApps into de SD Card;
- reboot the phone pressing vol - (then vol + too) to access the 2ndInit boot menu. It show four options:
1. reboot system now;
2. apply update from sdcard;
3. wipe data/factory reset;
4. wipe cache partition
- I did the wipe data and cache (3 and 4), whose worked well;
- then I finally tried to install CM10 and got the message:
E: filed to verify whole-file signature;
E: signature verification failed;
Installation aborted.
I couldn't figure out what was doing wrong...
Searched for some help and as a try, I installed 2ndInit (vs 2.0), and turned-off the phone.
Now, I still not able to install CM10 and I'm stucked in a BOOT LOOP!
Wipe data/cache don't fix the problem and I still have the same four options after press VOL - and access the recovery menu...
Don't know what I did wrong nor what to do to solve the problem...
I searched the forum, and it seems the only way is to flash SBF. Is that the case? If so, how can i do?
That's the first time I do things like that on Android and I don't understand what to do based on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
Please, someone might help me?
Thanks in advance!!
