Vibrate when silent for SMS/MMS? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to the Note 3 and can't seem to figure this out.
I don't need the phone to vibrate when the sound is on for notifications. However, when I set the phone to vibrate I want SMS/MMS to cause the phone to vibrate. I can't figure this out...
If I uncheck "Also vibrate when notified" under SMS/MMS settings, then that stops the vibrations when the phone sound is on. But when I put the phone to Vibrate mode.... messages won't vibrate the phone.
I need "Vibrate when silent" or something to that affect.
Am I missing something here?

I, too, was frustrated by the vibration behavior on this device with regard to notifications.
My suggestion is to try an app called Vybe in the market that solved all my problems.

Everything you should need is Under the sound settings. And then the vibrate settings. Most apps, including messages, and gmail, have a check box to vibrate as a notification. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure where you are looking but I don't have check boxes anywhere in sound settings for messages, gmail, etc.
This is what I see and there are no check boxes for different apps in any of these areas.

Yea I knew that... The problem is if you check that Vibrate box under Message settings.. it will vibrate even when the sound is on, which I don't need. But if I uncheck it, text messages will not vibrate when the phone is set to vibrate. Kind of aggravating... I don't need the phone to vibrate when the ringer is on, but I don't have a choice because if I uncheck that box, messages will not vibrate when the phone is set to vibrate.

I dont use vibrate at all...
However... what you may have to do is go under the Vibration Intensity, and slide those all the way down when you dont need vibrate, and slide them all the way up when you do need them.
That way you can keep your vibrate boxes checked at all time, and thats more of a master control for Vibration.

If the Vibration Intensity was unique for each mode: Ringer On and Vibrate... that would work.. Unfortunately turning it all the way down so it doesn't vibrate with ringer on, even with it checked in message settings, doesn't allow it to vibrate when set to vibrate mode.

You just want it to vibrate when the ringer is off correct? I think its going to take some work on your behalf, meaning you will have to use those sliders when the volume is off, raise the vibration up more. When the volume is on, lower the vibration. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Yea no problem... And yes I just want it to vibrate when the ringer is off. Looks like I'd have to adjust the intensity eveytime I went from vibrate to ringer... Which sucks.
Hopefully Kit Kat fixes that

Lock screen silence/vibrate

Not sure if this topic would be in this forum or not...but I've noticed quite a few of the roms I've tried (celb2.1, white widow, kaosfroyo) all have a drag to silent phone feature on the lock screen. The only one I noticed that switches it to VIBRATE instead of just plain silent though is kaos....any idea how to change this function in say...celb2.1?
U have to change ur vibrate options in settings sounds
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
I am interested in trying to get the vibrate function working on Aloysius's lockscreen also instead of the sound off, there is no vibrate option in settings sound however, any ideas?
I just use the volume rockers on the side. One tick above silent is vibrate only.
I would be interested to know if you could change the slide to silent to slide to vibrate as well.
All I did to enable the slide for vibrate feature is make sure phone vibrate is checked in your settings under sounds and display

That didn't work for me, i checked it but nothing changed w the lockscreen. I don't know if its a different lockscreen.apk or a setting.

I think this might be Froyo thing as when I was using Eris Lightning Bolt it would only go to silent mode

Notifications vibrating

Is there a way I can have my notifications only vibrate in silent mode and not while I have ringer volume on? Just like how you can with the ring tone.

Ok, maybe I worded my question wrong. As of right now, I have under the messaging settings to vibrate when notified. And in the general sound settings, I have vibrate only when in silent mode. Now, however, my messages still vibrate when not in silent mode along with playing the sound I have set for notifications where as my ring tone only vibrates while in silent mode and ONLY plays the ring tone when not in silent mode. How can I make it so my messages do not vibrate when not in silent mode and only vibrate when in silent mode.
You are going to have to toggle the messaging settings then. There is no one step solution for what you want. There used to be a vibrate option before silent but that is gone right now.

So there is no simple way to have the ringer and notification volume under the same setting so that they both only play the sound when not in silent mode and only vibrate when in silent mode? like a normal phone would?

Not anymore. Samsung thought it would be more versatile to have seperate settings Then they removed the vibe option just before silence and combined them. I believe there are third party apps that allow you to do a bunch of commands but I cannot remember what they are called. But no easy way other without another app.
Yup. Witnessed this earlier. I was sleeping and someone tore me out my zone when they called so I ignored it (on full volume) and they kept calling interrupting me so I held volume down to put it in silent mode so if they call back I can stay in lala land, but I didn't realize it was onvibate and I got another rude awakening. I then stood there continuously pressing vol up and down to get silent mode but it wasn't there (give me a break my cognitive functions suck when I'm torn out of my dreams lol)
I ended up picking up to get them to stop, but I should've been able to shut them up immediately

Hi,
I really dislike some security apps forcing all kinds of things(virus scanner) into an application which I only want to use to remotely control my phone. So I wrote aeGis.
aeGis allows most of the functionality you'll see with Lookout or Cerebrus, but handles it locally on your phone via SMS with no data connection being required to complete any of the actions.
If your phone ever goes missing or is stolen, simply text the passphrase you chose to your device to activate any of the four options. aeGis will alert you if the action has been successfully completed.
Features:
- Ability to remotely lock your device via SMS
- Ability to remotely enable sound on your device via SMS
- Ability to remotely locate your device via SMS
- Ability to remotely wipe your device via SMS
- Ability to lock application with a password
- Ability to launch application from Dialer(so you can hide it from your app tray)
- Ability to backup call logs/sms logs to either Google Drive or Dropbox
- Ability to silently trigger actions
Support
Supports android device > API 14(Ice Cream Sandwhich)

Gmail SMS appending issue . I'm locked out . I set a number as pin in aeGis, but this is asking for a word. I did try default password "aeGis" but it isn't working either. pull the xml file and password "1234" just what I set. but this isn't working.

So looking at your issue a bit further. Gmail SMS appends: " - [email protected]"
So your password would be: "passcode - [email protected]"
Anyways, I fixed the issue in v1.2.3 with this commit: https://github.com/Decad3nce/Aegis/commit/c116d3e0b2975d37ad0b3dabe0e79c2cb7edd7ec
Code:
password = password.replaceAll("([^[email protected]\\s]+)(\\.[^[email protected]\\s]+)*@([^[email protected]\\s]+\\.)+([^[email protected]\\s]+)", "")
.replaceAll("-+","")
.trim();
Good regex saves lives.

Thanks. I give it a try today.:fingers-crossed:If it had been a pin, the keyboard could have been dial pad. Had to wipe for the 3rd time. :silly:
so In this case it should be "[email protected]". And youremail should be replaced with my email add. Well it is isn't working either. I'm using ver. 1.2.3.
So anyother wipe ?
Any way to add the option to disable persistent notification?

Is there any reason other than lack of using backward compatible API options that this doesn't work on pre ICS devices?
Despite what you may think, there are a lot of not so old devices that do not have working/reliable ICS, such as the G2X. Limiting an app to ICS at this stage is rather..... annoying.

Understandable.... from what I've been playing around with in Eclipse, you can specify a different theme for older API levels. Might be something to look at if the theme is the only limitation

The alarm is meant more of a way to override your sound settings to take the device out of silent mode.
The email sound you explain is just the sound by the messaging app most likely which is your default notification sound.

I've used slimkat's Blacklisting feature and I like how it's built into the rom. I would love to see something like that added as a module to xposed framework. I have been unable to find any other "root" call blockers except for Root call blocker pro. The only thing I think is missing though from most of the call blocking apps is the reverse lookup feature to determine whether an unknown number is in fact a spam caller.
any other alternatives?

I don't want change my ROM, Any app can support it besides SlimKat?
If I had known this prior to going to KK, I wouldn't have gone. Google changed things for messaging in KK. Basically, there is a default messaging setting now (it's under settings -> Wireless and networks -> More -> Default messaging app). And from what I've read, there is currently no way to stop the default messaging app from getting a notification, hence the reason you can't use a 3rd party app like Blocker. I like having the ability to blacklist in the ROM, but when I did that and tried to undo it for a contact, that contact remained blocked for SMS. I had to go into blocked messages and restore their messages in order to read them, especially if it was an MMS. What a pain in the derriere. Even if you turn off notifications in the SMS app, the SMS / MMS will still be delivered to the SMS app. Before it wouldn't get delivered there. You can read more about it here http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/12/06/non-default-sms-apps-in-kitkat-can-still-write-to-the-sms-database-using-a-switch-in-app-ops-no-root-required/ if you want. BTW, if you do what it says to do in that article, you will lose the ability for the SMS app you are modifying to send or receive messages, even if all you do is turn off the receive. I personally prefer something like Blocker because I can create "blocking profiles". I set up different profiles with different blacklists. If I'm at work late at night I can turn on my night work profile and some people will get an automatic response while others will get blocked all together. If I'm out on the motorcycle I can turn on the "riding" one and people will get an automated response saying that I'm out riding and that they will have to talk to me later (useful for family members that are overprotective and have to know you are alive). The blocking list in the ROM is one list and only one list. You have to remove and add numbers as you need to, probably why 3rd party apps were created where you can use profiles, duh Google. Google fail on this one IMO. I'm going to give this root call blocker pro because I'm willing to try anything at this point. Oh how I wish I could go back to MJ4.
How bout changing MMS.apk (or whatever app you want blocked) permissions? If you remove its permissions it shouldnt be able to send or receive messages. You can do it in AppOps, or with a root explorer.

Starting in 4.4, android handles sms differently. It's a priority thing. Previous versions allowed an app to have a higher sms receive priority, then do something with the message, such as display it, filter it, or stop it from filtering down to sms apps with lower priorities. That's how blockers did their job.
Starting in 4.4 and going forward, the sms app selected as the default is automatically given the highest priority, so blockers can't receive it first, meaning they no longer work.
There is no way to make it work the old way other than going to a previous version of Android or using a custom rom with this built in. (maybe an app with root permission could do it but I haven't checked).
The only work around is to download an sms app that has a block feature built into it

Chomp and handcent are decent freebies but if you don't mind paying, I stick with Vegas sms. It's got the blocker down and also has a hidden blackbook

thank you, but I believe none of these free have filter by word in spam/block settings.
Can you check if Vegas has this? I'm willing to pay for this feature, I receive lots of spam from random numbers and blocking via sender's number wouldn't be very effective.

I just emailed your question to the developer and he said it's not possible as of 4.4. I don't know enough about it to say how right he is so take it with a grain of salt

I faced the same issue. Most SMS get delivered to the SMS App and they Land in Blocker as well.
All has been discussed ....why ... Below.
However, I Started using GO SMS PRO from Google Play (free)
And I am Happy ever since.. NO SPAM !!
It has an OPTION in Settings...
a) Block Particular Numbers/ Contacts
b) Block Non Address Book ( All Unknown Messages )
These Messages Land in a Separate Folder which you can Name as Spam ( Even Submit them for Spam / Abuse)
I tried This After Trying My Most Faithful CALL BLOCKER ...even That failed on My Moto-X Tho it works amazingly Good on ICS/Jellybean But Not on KitKat...
So Try GO SMS PRO and Enable Blocking.
Some people might not like using a Third Party App for Messaging..But then ~

Stock messaging app wake screen?

This is weird one, I'm familiar that the screen doesnt wake when a notification is received. But just now I received a text via the stock messaging app which woke up the screen. Fortunately I had Nice Catch enabled to show this .
I never recalled that the screen would wake from any app based notifications. Is this feature unique for Samsung massaging app?

I believe so. My screen only wakes for the Samsung messages. Kinda annoying. I wish it would just flash the AOD instead

It is annoying that the screen turns on , I agree.
I tried googling this symptom and most results I found were for folks that wanted the screen to wake , which I don't. Its just this app doing it.

I agree, it is very Annoying. Especially when you have chatty friends, family and wife who text you ALL DAY LONG lol. The phone never sleeps during the day because of texts alone. And I wear a Galaxy watch so I get notified of the texts anyway, i definitely don't need the screen waking up too.

I'd be using another messaging app by now. However tmobile RCS messaging only works on the stock Samsung messaging app on my tmobile branded device.

Just turn off the stock messaging notifications to 'Sound Only' for the specific sim and additionally go to Settings - Notifications-"In-app notifications" and turn off 'preview messages'. This should stop from waking the screen.

That didn't work either. I had to set it for the attached notification.
So now I don't get the screen wakes when receiving a text message which is a good thing, however the device no longer vibrates or shows icon on lock screen either.

You should have a 'Vibrate' option in your message app settings. (See attached). Not sure if its carrier dependent.
ASFIK the lock screen settings takes precedence over "preview messages" settings. So even if I turn off preview messages in the 'in-app notifications' but keep 'show content' or 'hide content' in the lock screen settings, the lock screen will show icon/actual message. What you could try is have on-tap AOD enabled and disable preview & lock screen content, that way you can see the icon on AOD screen. Alternatively, have the 'blink light' option turned on in message settings so the led at least notifies you.

These are the options I have for new messages. Which ones shall I change. Bearing in mind I've tried a few variables.

Notification Style - 'Sound' only
Lock Screen - "Dont Show Notifications"
In-App Notifications -> Preview Messages - Turn off.
Am not sure if the icon would appear on lock screen. Try out with AOD On-tap enabled. There is no 'blink light' option for you, but you at least get a sound alert & vibrate without waking up the screen.

Thanks I'll try that. Won't be able to test until tomorrow. Wife locks her s10+. [emoji106] I use her phone to send myself test messages.

Wow, what a coincidence! I tested the whole thing out using my wife's phone before replying to you!

I tried it just now, it doesn't wake up screen like it didn't in silent and minimized mode. However it does give me a audible notification which is good.
But still doesn't show icon on AOD. I use tap screen to show AOD.

Almost forgot about this. Tried multiple settings, so it seems sometimes it works and the icon appears on AOD, but mostly it does not. Seems to be a bug or I'm not able to figure this out??
