Unable to Root Note 3 900W8 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
I have a Canadian Note 3 model 900W8
Yesterday I had to flash back to the stock firmware due to a bootloop issue I had...
Today I tried to re-root my Note 3...and when I press start in Odin, it fails.
I'm doing the exact same method I did the first time I rooted it, and it fails. In dowlnoad mode, the tiniest bit of progress is made and it just stops.
I believe it says recovery failed in download mode.
I've tried to do this on two different computers using various USB ports.
I have developer mode enabled, and usb debugger is also enabled.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Were you able to root using the same setup before?

What firmware are you on 4.3 or 4.4?
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using xda app-developers app

I'm currently on 4.3
and yes it worked the exact same way last time...I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong this time...
I'm not able to post the url to the site that I used last time to root my phone....maybe if I space it out lol
www . android . gs / root-install-twrp-recovery-canada-galaxy-note-3-n900w8/
but yeah it worked perfectly fine when I did it last month

Try using cf auto root which you can find in the original android Dev section ( make sure you download the one for 4.3 ). If you're not successful in using Twrp, try Cwm as custom recovery ( although I'm using Twrp on 4.4 right now ).

alright so I tried again
in ODIN mode this is what I see
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-N900W8
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
SYSTEM STATUS: OFFICIAL
REACTIVATION LOCK: ON
KNOX KERNEL LOCK: 0X0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0X1
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE (CSB)
AP SWERV: S2, T2, R2, A2, P2
WRITE PROTECTION: ENABLE
and this appears after the flash fails
SECURE CHECK FAIL: recovery

Ouch, you tripped your KNOX. Okay no worries. You're currently on 4.3 bootloader, and if you're trying to flash the 4.4.2 firmware - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2614772
I suggest you do that first.

Yeah I rooted my phone a month ago and tripped knox
I'm not upset about it or anything...
Thanks for the help, I'll give what you suggested a shot right now and will reply with the results

You have to turn off reactivation lock then flash again. It can be found in the security settings.

I have to turn off reactivation lock and flash again?
I already did step 1 of what nicholaschum suggested I do, and I have 4.4.2 installed now.
Before going through the setup process of setting up my phone, I went to root it immediately, but I got hte same failure I've been getting...
I assumed it's because I have to enable USB debugging...so I setup my phone...has me enter my login/password for my phone becuase of reactivation lock...confirm 4.4.2 is installed....enable dev mode.....check usb debugging....
So before I do anything further I just want to get confirmation....after checking reactivation lock in security settings (for some reason it wasn't checked just now when I looked even though I had to login with the info when I first booted the phone after flashing to 4.4.2)
do I flash 4.4.2 again and continue with what nicholaschum said to do?

You can continue what you are doing just make sure it says off when you are in download mode.

I think as long as reactivation lock is on in download mode you won't get root or flash custom recovery.

Hey guys
I now have a rooted Note 3 running Kitkat 4.4.2
Huge thank you to you both of you who helped me this evening.
Now my biggest problem is trying to figure out what rom I want to install.
What would you guys recommend? The only ones I know are Jedi......xnote and wicked.
Basically don't want an bloatware that comes stock with Samsung devices lol

I personally use vision x n3 from the tmobile section as it comes stock and just add my own customization courtesy of xposed installer. Having said that, each of us has their own preferences so read the features that appeal to you and take that rim for a spin. Some roms though need a fix for bt, wifi and nfc along with a kernel that supports them in order to function especially those based on n9005.

So the roms that are compatible for our N900W8 are for the n9005?

I think every rom made for a note 3 snapdragon ( N9005, N900T, N900A, etc..) will work on our N900W8 except as i mentioned, the wifi,bt and nfc which will need a fix. I found that only AT&T and Tmobile roms don't need a fix for wifi,bt and nfc, They work right off the bat. Problem is there's not many 4.4 based rom from them because of their locked bootloader. If you're still looking for a good rom to try, give Knoxraid 3.5 a spin.

Check out the Canadian Galaxy Note 3 Users thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2464292
I personally use X-Note 10. But you can use ANY N9005 ROM provided you DON'T INSTALL KERNEL AND BOOT WITH IT. Follow this guide here to run custom ROMs on 4.4.2. Skip to Part Three. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2614772

[Q] Knox and Custom Roms

Hi Folks,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask...
I would like to Custom ROM my S4 and have been reading through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832 about Knox. It would appear Knox hasn't been activated on my phone yet as there's no mention of it in Download mode, here are the details gained from Settings and Download mode:
Android 4.2.2
Baseband: I9505XXUBMF8
Build: JDQ39.I9505XXUBMF8
SELinux: Permissive
Secure Boot Status: Type: Samsung
Device Status: Custom
Odin Mode:
Product Name: GT-I9505
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
CSB-CONFIG-LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable
I am rooted but have used TriangleAway to set status back to official without any problems, my question is am I safe to install Custom ROMS/Kernels without triggering Knox warranty void? If so and I wanted to install a modded Samsung ROM will this still be safe or will it trip Knox?
Thanks for any suggestions, I'm never normally this cautios about flashing, but I really don't want to screw up my warranty.
Many thanks,
R.
If theres nothing about knox warranty 0/0 in download then u are on old bootloader and safe. Dont know about the custom roms I guess stay away from any mh8 mh5 mgg fw. Im pretty sure they are they fw with new bootloader. But just keep searching round.

I've just bought a new S4 and it will arrive to my home in this week.... I hope it will arrive without Knox feature so I'd like to understand too what to do and what to not do in order to prevent Knox problems.
I think I'll flash the Google Edition ROM... any suggestions?
Thanks Buddy

[Q] What's next on my rooted N900V/build MJE

Good morning, all,
First off, thanks to all the hard-working devs out there who let me make my new wonderful Note 3 an even more enjoyable product. I'm now asking for some assistance, after not concretely finding answers to my questions here on XDA. Hopefully the kindness will be extended!
- Have a new Verizon SM-N900V with build MJE on it.
- Rooted with Kingo
- Disabled KNOX with SuperSU
When the Note 3 boots, I get an unlock icon with the word "Custom" on it. From my Galaxy Nexus 7/Nexus 7 experience, this usually means the bootloader is unlocked. So to check, I boot into download mode and see:
Current binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
Knox kernel lock 0x0
Knox warranty void: 0x0
Qualcomm secureboot: enable (CSB)
RP SWREV: S1, T1, R1, A2, P1
Write protection: Enable
Essentially, my question is this: do I just safestrap now and flash away ROMs? I'm assuming I'd use these instructions to do safestrap: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
Or is there another course of action I can take, such as directly flashing a recovery? I'm just a little confused about what my next best course of action would be.
Again, thanks in advance for any insight!

Welcome to world of a rooted phone. Since you're on MJE you'd need Safestrap 3.65. Most roms have updated to the NC2 KK leak. It's been advised by Beans and Hashcode to update to it as any further updates may lock us down completely. Safestrap is alittle more than flashing roms in Amonra or Clockwork Mod. It's kind of like dual booting on a computer but it's your phone. The only problem is Hashcode hasn't fully updated the new KK Safestrap for multipe rom slots yet so it will be one at a time for now. Read thru the Safestrap thread and look at a few youtube videos to get a feel for it then once you have the Jellybean version working and you know your way around go here for the KK NC2 leak upgrade.
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2740466
Video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KibHLs0l9hs
Don't worry about upgrading as the best part about the leak is if anything goes wrong with your phone we can downgrade back to unrooted MJE for warranty returns, etc. Just take your time, read and follow any videos that may be listed. If my dumb ass can do it anyone can...

Our bootloader is locked. That just appears once you have root, some ppl have gotten rid of it with wanam and xposed if that doesnt work you can use triangle away "Reset Flash Counter" to get rid of the icon
If you are going to upgrade to kitkat DONT take the OTA follow a link on here and get NC2
Thanks everyone! I followed your links, and also used the following videos to:
Safestrap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C7OKDsfM-Y
Then,
Install Kitkat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KibHLs0l9hs
The videos do a fantastic job explaining what Safestrap was...that was confusing initially for me.
THANKS buttons hit appropriately.

[Q] About kernel and ChainFire auto root

Hello
i have the SM-N910C running the official lollipop firmware,
days ago i've rooted it using CF auto root through the odin,
And it was successful, but the question is the CF auto root
replacing the stock Kernel to another one while flashing ?
cause when i reset flash counter using triangle away even without restarting the phone it still shows in triangle away:
counter: 1
Binary: custom
system: official
but in bootloader it says:
current binary: samsung official
system status: official
secure download : enabled
knox warranty void: 1
rp swrev: 1
and the reactivation lock is off in the settings and the bootloader
i just need the software updates after root
and resetting the flash counter to Zero
and to know the kernel is it stock or custom
anyone could help ?
and sorry for any bad english, thanks.

Hi, cf autoroot doesnt replace your kernel, so u should still have stock kernel.
and also as far as i know, triangle away doesnt work on note 4 ... so right now there is no way to reset the counter to zero.
and 1 more thing is you may have posted this question in the wrong thread, you should have posted it in the Q&A thread. ^^

Good luck trying to figure out how to reset that counter permanently - so far no one managed to find a way to do that since the introduction of KNOX back in 2013.

N9005 Cannot Flash Stock ROM

HI,
Im trying to load a stock firmware onto my 32GB N9005 Note 3, but its failing when the flash starts.
I downloaded a HK version of 5.0 ([247616]»˝–«_N9005_N9005ZSUGOL1_÷–π˙œ„∏€(TGY)_5.0.20160317183141.tar) , and it fails at some security check at the start ( Fail(Auth).
Id like to do one of 2 things:
1) Figure out how to fix the security problem so i can load the stock 5.0 on to it
or
2) I also downloaded the stock 4.4.2 , but its not in a tar.... its come in a folder with 6 files.
AP_xxxxxx.tar
BL_xxxxxxx.tar
CP_xxxxxxxx.tar
CSC_xxxxxxxx.tar
HLTE_HKTW_OPEN_16GB.pit
HLTE_HKTW_OPEN_32GB.pit
Can i use odin to flash the 4 files in 1 go to update to the stock version?
The phone was bought from China about a while ago, and its currently running a version of 4.4.4. It looks to me like its running a custom ROM, which was preinstalled from the dodgy place i bought it from, details are below:
Baseband: N9005XXUGNG1
Build Number: DONGCHAO.A429
Kernel Version:
3.4.0-2593013
[email protected] #1
Friday Nov 28 14:31:10 KST 2014
Hardware 1.06
Philz Touch also installed.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Im not sure how to tell.

ODIN MODE

KNOW WARRANTY VOID: 0x1 (2)
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE )CSB_
RP SWREV: S1, T1, R1, A3, P1
SECURE DOWNLOAD: ENABLE
UDC START
Its interesting the product name is not matching my expectation. do all sm-n9005 show sm-n900p in download mode?
G
I guess the mb has been changed. It's not n9005 anymore.

It's not an N9005. It's an N900P therefore download an N900P version of the firmware.
In case anyone wonders in the future what happened with this.... I basically gave up. Something has obviously been reworked on the phone, into a state that i'm pretty unhappy with messing with. I don't need to update it enough to push on, seems like the chances to kill it, or find myself with a phone that no longer supports lte, are too high.
Top tip: When you're buying from China.... you never get what you expect.

If lock is on, there is no chance to flash new recovery? I stuck with one phone, buddy of mine gave me some old note3, with samsung account and reactivation on, so I wonder if this is new shiny door holder or I can actually install something?
Did you try installing a stock ROM from sammobile.com? Not sure if flashing an older or newer ROM will make a difference.
Apparently, there are methods to bypass the lock.
