Kingo Root Repeatedly Failing - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried using Kingo to root my Verizon Note 3 multiple times, and nothing I've tried has worked. I've used different cables, different computers (Win 7/8), made sure USB debugging was on, unchecked verify apps via USB, etc etc. Anybody have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it, as this is getting really frustrating.

I'm trying to find a way to root my device as well and from what I've read the latest OTA from Verizon may have thrown quite a stick in the spokes of trying to get this beast rooted. Not sure, still digging for info...but that may be why you are having troubles? If you find a way, let me know eh?

I remember reading something about that too. Maybe the eventual update to KK will bring about new methods. I'll let you know if I find something, and expect the same from you.

So I couldn't get kingo to work and vroot worked fine

Verizon pushed a security policy update out post MJE that I'm investigating. It's pushed silently and disables the option to disable automatic policy updates. It disabled Kingo but vroot still works.

I did recently root my Verizon N3 using Kingo, about 2 weeks ago if that. I did use USB 3.0 so idk if that made a difference or not? It did fail the 1st 2 or 3 times but then went through. I was on MJE before rooting too.

Tried for a week and found the problem. Kingo 1.2 has an error in one of the scripts. You need to download 1.1.8 and it works flawlessly. Had my phone rooted and safestrap recovery up and running in less than 3 min.

Unrootable?

Hello everyone. I just got a Samsung Galaxy S4 on the AT&T network. I want to root it to open up the capabilities and such. I have tried rooting this phone via the motochopper method and the "format micro sd card exFAT/unzip/run command cd /mnt/extSdCard..etc) when i get to the ./pwn I get permission denied. I have tried searching and come up with nothing. I am running Android 4.3 build. SGH-I1337 MK2 platform. I am ready to pull my hair out. I spent all day yesterday trying to resolve this. Please help.
PS: If I missed something I apologize I did try to search.
Thanks,

the only root method is vroot and that is suppose to be pretty questionable as far as security goes.
And if you are okay with that there is still no custom recovery for mk2 so you will not be able to flash custom rome onto it yet

I was able to root my AT&T S4 running MK2 with KingoRoot 1.1.5. It's a very simple 1-click root tool.

Use kingo, it uses vroot method without the virus/trojan and ripping off your emei
I should add i confirmed with them that vroots malicious code was removed from kingo root latest release. Google it for download. I used it, knox safe root even for my i377m

After I do this can I do the custom roms like everyone else? Are there any limitations or is it the same as everyone elses root access?

I dont believe you can run custom recovery, might soft brick. Mk2 is locked i believe, maybe safestrap. Again tho double check. If cant run custom, install xposed framework, can do all rom customization on stock, only does it in memory, without changing apks or system and what not, cool stuff. Anyway install busybox installer from play store. Then xposed is apk you can find with Google, once xposed running, download the modules u want from within xposed and play around. All mods can be turned off in xposed if it causes problems.

I think on 4.3 all you can do is root, its possible there's a recovery script or something. It should be in the general of att s4 forums
mf3 rooted SHOstock
There is no recovery and no custom ROMs that can be installed.
Looks like the lot of you have no idea what is going on. With this device, a maybe can end up with a $600 paperweight.

Thanks alot for the info, I am kind of kicking myself because I had a phone before this one that I rooted no problem but then the phone started dropping calls and such so I returned it and now apparently I got one that is not rootable as of now. I am sure the developers are working on it and a workaround will be out soon.
Again thanks,

I have tried Vroot 1.1.5 about a dozen times and always fails. I have debugging checked and drivers are OK. I can connect adb with no problem. At times adb and root will say device offline. I also got the connect message on my sgh-I337 Att Mk2 and checked always, then OK. Any info or suggestions.

First I made a mistake as it was Kingo root ver 1.1.5. I never got any superuser or supersu message on my i337, I did see the notice on Kingo to allow supersu when it came up. Kingo goes thru connecting, downloading, sending script to device, waiting on device and sometimes I see device offline, then Kingo will connect and do it's thing. At the end alli get is root failed. I will do it again in a couple hours and try to get better information. One question I do have is what state is the I337 to be in booted up and lock screen unlocked, recovery or fast boot? I have only tried in booted up and lock screen unlocked. Oh I have tried root also but it failed also. On Knox, some thread it was mentioned to have Knox disabled to run Kingo. I ask there but was reminded that I wasn't on a Kingo thread... even tho some 8 others had ask questions or input on Kingo. So found this thread. Thanks for any advice.

UPDATE!!!! Do ask me why but after 2 more fails with Kingo, I started a program that I had to use with Hisense Sero pro tablet to root it called Snappea. It doesn't root but needed to be connected to the Sero while rooting. So I brought it up and let I connect to my ATT SG4 I337 and the ran Kingo1.1.5. Kingo ran thru the steps fast, installed supersu, rebooted i337 and checked it, rebooted again and was done. Rooted. Thanks for your help

So now that you are rooted there are still not recovery or custom roms for this particular phone right? One of the main reasons I would be rooting is for the custom roms.
Thanks,

Okay you guys got me. Now for my question what is the difference between MF2 and MF3? Is that a different bootloader or firmware because I understand it, it is not a different android version.
Thanks,

***need help rooting***

What's up everyone, i'm new to the site and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me root my galaxy note 3. I've tried rooting in the past and failed terribly. I tried on a sprint gs3 and a verizon note 2, and i almost bricked both of them. So if someone with a lot of experience would help root my phone and install a custom rom, it would be greatly appreciated. As far as the type of rom, i could careless about appearance...i'm all about performance and battery life. So basically, i want a rom that "overclocks" my processor and removes bloatware and unnecessary apps. I'll take instructions on how to do it but i'd rather someone remotely control my pc [teamviewer] to help. I'll even paypal you like $5 for helping me. Thanks in advance!
I *would* help you, but I'm having issues rooting as well. I'm no where near new to it, been doing it since my HTC Fuze way back when. There are a couple of ways to root, Vroot, will pretty much root anything android and there is Kingo. I would give you links to both, but its not allowed, but you can do a quick google search and find them and info about them. If you're on the MJE build, I was successful with both methods, but I managed to cause a few issues when I was rooted with Kingo and had to Odin back to stock.
You need kingo 1.1.8 and safestrap. Both are one button operations. I rooted and had the safestrap installed and the modified twrp recovery in less than 3 minutes. Kingo 1.2 had a faulty script and causing errors.

Obviously since the bootloader is locked down tight, if you want a custom rom, you need to use safestrap.
You need to download safestrap apk file from hashcode's website, open it, grant root permission, and install recovery.
Once you install recovery you can reboot to recovery right from the safestrap app, then create and activate rom-slot-1
Once active, you can flash/install your ROM.zip file (I would recommend Hyperdrive or Jelly Beans) and reboot...that's pretty much it in a nutshell, its relatively easy

Thanks, finally got the download. All 1.1.8 links were leading to 1.2 download, had to use a mirror download to get 1.1.8.
Starting root now, hope it doesnt brick! Before I start...I guess I should ask, will rooting and going to a custom ROM fix my battery drain issues? Since the 4.3 update I get about 6 hours of battery life while not using my phone at except to turn the screen on for 10 sec to check the battery level.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. I have a note 3 and 1.1.8 worked for me.
Are you sure it's 1.1.8? I tried many times and downloaded 1.2even thoughit said1.1.8 and finally found 1.1.8 from a user on xda. If you need I can upload the correct version. But as previously stated you can find the most up to date safe strap on the note 3 board. Install the app press install recovery and every time your phone boots it will ask continue or recovery. Make a backup of stock and restore to any slot you want If you want to do stock rooted or select any slot and flash any rom (make sure it's for the Verizon note 3 because with a locked bootloader you cannot flash kernels) I'm currently running neon rom and with moderate usage I'm getting almost 3 days on a single charge. I find wifi downloading I can destroy 40 percent battery in about 2 hours though. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

You have to make sure you turn off antivirus. For me that meant turning off avg, Windows Defender and some other stuff I found it. Make sure you have developer options on USB debugging, screen stay on, and for some reason it seems like it helped to turn on unknown sources in your security settings on your phone. Sometimes it took me unplugging the USB and plugging it back in a few times in order for it to work but I just did it myself last week and making sure I did those things allowed me to do this pretty easily and reliably

There's no issues. It works just fine, the only thing is that it will give you a custom flag if you have busybox installed. You could always get an installer from the market to check and remove it an then unroot.

Yeah the above guy is right. Asking before doing is the way to go.
In this case, the exploit was constructed by geohot, the guy who hacked the PS3 and the first iPhone, as well as making -ra1n exploits for most of the iPhones.
Yes, I would say it's 'safe'.
If you meant by geohot releasing the exploit to the public and raising awareness that the kernel on the Samsung devices are bugged, then yeah it wouldn't be safe.
not only that is safe, but also no restart needed, no knox trip( at least on my 4.3 rom), root ok.
After restart all apps work, no reset needed, i just install supersu from gplay and good to go.
My favorite root method of all time, no computer needed. I did everything pc-free... Got root, custom recovery, and everything else you can imagine that usually requires a pc. Towel root, mobile Odin, cwm recovery, xposed modules, all work perfectly for me... Even if I did get stuck in a boot loop or two, was always able to recover without use of a pc.

Use root explorer or the equivalent, go into /data/app and locate eu.chainfire.supersu.apk and if you have the pro version, locate eu.chainfire.supersu.pro.apk (there may be a "-<number>" before the ".apk) and tap on them and you should get asked if you want to install or view. Install each.
That should fix the problem.

Your best bet is to install safestrap and flash a supersu package. Then uninstall ss if u want. Towel root is a temporary fix imo.
Check your /data/data folder and /data/app (/system/app if you've converted) and check for duplicates or what number beside package name (e.g. com.xxx.xxxx-1 or -2 and sometimes even 3 and 4. Rename it to have a -1 and then go to /data/dalvik-cache and find the same package(s), delete them and reboot. If still unsuccessful, reflash from safestrap but manually mount system b4 flashing just for the hell of it and after second boot-up (if required), you should be good. Erase any .txt or the like from sdcard and extsdcard volumes from chainfire or supersu too I almost forgot to add
Got it to finally update binaries....upgrade your SU to Beta version 2.13. Works like a charm and snappier!
Just want to say thank you to everyone who replied with great suggestions, unfortunately none of them worked. I did however stumble on a fix. I downloaded mobogenie , and when it went out to look for app updates, it had an update for superSU that the play store did not show me. I ran the updates and now we're good.
Hope this fix might help others who are stuck in the same boat.
