Yes there is:
Root
Install Xposed Framework
Install Gravity Box module
Configure Gravity Box's:
- Navigation key actions
- Statusbar tweaks
There are additional modules that add double tap functionality. Search XDA, the Xposed repository or Google.

I dont see any that offer the Double Tap to wake function, i see many posts looking for it though.

Not sure if you ever found an answer to this since it's been about a month. Gravity Box does have a "double tap to sleep" function, but it doesn't have a "double tap to wake" one. In order for dt2w to work, you need to flash a kernel that supports that feature. I know there are kernels for the Nexus 5 with this feature, but not sure about the Nexus 10. Plus, I've heard having dt2w enabled eats battery like no other, since the digitizer always has to be on.

I'm using next launcher instead of stock

[MOD][REQUEST] Disable Capacitive Buttons

I am currently running AOKP on my Tmobile version and enabled the onscreen navigation bar. Id like to know if we have a script that disables the capacitive buttons yet on this device, and if not, a request for a dev to make one. Thank you.
I haven't been able to disable them, but if you just want to have the capacitive buttons not light up snag "Screen Filter" as it lets you turn off the button lights (set it to 100% if you don't want to dim your screen). I also used "Auto Start (no root)" to have it start at boot.

What do you mean disable those buttons? Disable actions when pressing them?
So you have a huge useless bezel at the bottom of your screen?

Well mostly disable the light. I want to use the on screen navigation keys in AOKP as a substitute.

LOL i bet a lot of people didn't know that (including me).... i mean i've been to that setting before to see how long the lights could be "on" for. but never noticed there was a "always off" option

Please don't be rude, especially because you are wrong. This option is only available in the stock touchwiz based rom. I am on AOKP.

Sry. Reading comprehension was subpar on my part.
This is actually a very useful tool if available. On my Asus Transformer Prime, there is a lock setting that disables the capacitive buttons while you watch a movie or play a game. I know the OP wants to disable the capacitive buttons for the purpose of replacing it with the AOKP onscreen buttons, but I would like to have that ability just to disable it so that I don't accidentally press on those buttons while playing game or watching video. Like a quick setting from the notification bar to lock it would be perfect!
Ill be subscribing to this thread for when we get a daily driver AOSP rom on Verizon. I too would like to disable the capacitive buttons and have on-screen navigation buttons instead. I find the capacitive buttons are too hard to press when I want to and too easy to accidentally press when I don't want to.

So, I don't know how to actually disable the button function (I'm running task's AOKP rom) and I didn't like using that Screen Filter app to keep the backlight off since it keeps it in the notification bar.
However, it is pretty easy to keep just the backlight off. Go into Settings>Display>Custom Backlight Settings. Check the "Use custom" option and go into "Edit other levels...".
Change the value for all the different levels from 1 to 0. Reboot and enjoy!

[Q] Hide Screen Buttons

Hey, i just saw that the Huawei Ascend D2 has on-screen buttons that you can hide easy and pop it up again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH4Zt9lP23c(it's from 0:55) and just wondering if anybody could make something like that for the nexus 4?
There are a few ways to do it i believe. If you have a root a few apps will let you do it. Also AOKP has options to change it, as far as without root I'm not sure as I didn't try before i rooted my device. One of the things I have set is using Gesture Control I made swiping gestures from the area where the buttons would have been instead of having the buttons. I think it looks a lot better and for me works just as well.
download a custom rom such as cm10.1 to get this feature.
AOKP CM10.1 and PA all support this in the power menu.
Yes i know about the extended desktop, and i use it all the time. But i were thinking about a button on the soft-keys and a gesture to enable and disable it.

pa has per app expand. meaning you define app you like to jump into this and that mode and they will. if they have a quit button your bars will come back automatically.
there are apps out there can can do that with gestures. three finger gesture or whatever - not sure if they can hide the navigationbar because that would need framework changes afaik. we're working on something like that actually, its not yet 100% ready though.

Got nexus 4. Few questions

I bought my nexus 4 yesterday. I rooted it and now after 2 days using it I have some questions:
1. Is it possibile to personalize the notifications center by adding buttons. I miss so much the silent mode switch button from my galaxy s 2 with android 4.1.2
2. Is it possible to automatically search for contacts from the phone screen typing the letters of the contact we are searching for. In nexus 4 you can search for contacts only by the search screen
3. It seems that the only way to make lock screen appear is by pressing the lock phisic button. Is there an althernative method?
thank you guys
1. Download POWER TOGGLES from play store and you can have Data, Wifi, BT, Screen rotation, Torch, Volume changer to hi-lo etc.
2. Not exactly that but you cn download exDialer and search contact by clicking alphabets which are on numeric keys.
3. I NEVER use power button to turn screen on and off. Rather I use Screen ON & OFF app from play store.
And I am not rooted.

1. Many customs roms allow this. I recommend cyanogenmod or paranoidandroid (link in sig).
2. You can do this from the built in contacts/People app.
3. Touch Control: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.paranoid.touchcontrol

Thank you very much guys. filthykid, I can't find Screen ON & OFF app in the play store. I just found some apps that lock the screen. For unlocking I think is required root and touch control, isn't it?
I'm on CM 10.1 and it has the feature you are looking for.

Does it have the unlock screen with swype option? I mean, as touch control does with slide2wake

The touch control features are not ROM related. You will need a compatible kernel. The touch control app offers you a stock kernel with module support to enable the slide2wake features. Or you can flash another custom kernel like francokernel or trinity, they also support touch control. The stock CM10.1 kernel does not support touch control.

can u tell us a app that doesn't use proximity sensor for locking and unlocking phone and DOES NOT require root. In short app that have features like tap to wake, slide to wake but without needing root?
To avoid using power button for screen off (I Hate using power button) there are couple of options.
1. Touch control - But I think requires root and specific kernel
2. Lots of apps which give shortcut on screen to sleep
3. I dont know about stock but some ROM provides go to sleep option in toggle shortcut
4. There are apps (Intellicover, tap tap app, smart screen off, smart cover) which uses proximity sensor to do that. Either Tap or hide etc in option to do that.
Recently I bout flip cover for my N4 and using smart cover app which works great. Wakes up and sleep with cover open and close. I removed lock screen too.

I use the app attached in the SC. It has tap to wake or wave.. BUT that too on proximity sensor. But trust me it works absolutely perfect. Been using it since Jan 2013.

There was one of this name.. I used it initially but it didn't work so I deleted it. Then I started using Screen OFF and Lock (Donate). However you can use its free version Here.
And for waking up the phone without using Power button, I use Smart Screen ON.
Screenshots attached for reference. I am also attaching an extra SC to show Power Toggles.
Hit Thanks, if this helped ppl
Hi guys. I tried the "non rooted" version using Smart Screen ON for waking up and "the rooted" version with Touch Control. I can conclude Touch Control is a way better because Smart Screen ON makes the phone wake up and unlock when it is in the poket. How is you experience?

Never happened with me. I "sometimes" vibrant when i am holding it in my hands and just moving it here and there but that has no effect on my battery. I easily get 4 hours OST. Which i used to get even when the device was new and empty.

Double tap screen off like g3 with nova.

Not sure if anyone using nova knows this or anyone interested or anyone wants to get nova or whatever reason just likes to have this feature.
First step is install nova and prime (I think it requires this because we need the gesture)
Go to app store and download Screen off and lock by katecca. (You might wanna activate the app first) .
Once downloaded go to nova setting. Go under gesture and buttons. Select double tap. On the top tab select app. Scroll down to screen off (under s). When you first select it. It will have to activate the app first and just hit yes/activate it. (Unless you activated it first)
Once done..
You can now double tap anywhere to get screen off instead of the status bar.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! Good find till a dev can get the wake/sleep working without issues!
Now if only the back button was on the right hand side so when I use the phone in my right hand I can reach it.
If you have greenify you can link doubletap to that also.
That's what I've been doing for a while myself... Double tap will Hibernate + Lock phone aka Sleep.
Works very well
how about the other way?

G3 allows you to open and unlock phone? with tap patterns. Would loveā¤ to see that on this phone?.
Works but really does lock the phone so Smart Lock doesn't function when you're in a trusted location.. anyone know of a workaround or an app similar that will work with Lollipop?
Validus ROM has double table status bar to sleep. You can download it on their google + page.
I know this thread is a little old. Is this still the best double tap to sleep method through Nova?

Double tap for ambient display?

Is it possible to double tap the device's screen when it's off for the ambient display?
The pick up gesture doesn't always work, and I would rather have it be a action I can do to make it ALWAYS work.
Thanks in advance.
My understanding is that double tap to wake is a hardware requirement (that the 6p doesn't meet). But if you use your first to 'tap it' hard enough you should trigger the gyroscope to wake it

Nexus 6p has double tap to wake feature build in but you have to have root go activate it. I use it all the time and always works so I think it's not a hardware feature, someone just has to port it over or something

I'm using it too, but I did think it would be great if it worked like double-tap-to-ambient-display. That is, doesn't wake it fully just do the same like when lifting it. But didn't have the time to look through the kernel source yet.

Yep that would be great, I hope someone figures it out if it's possible to do
You can get tap to wake with a custom kernel like the one I'm using on my stock rooted N6p. Try EX Kernel it's awesome!

But that wakes the phone fully, not in ambient mode.
I would like the ability to turn on screen saver on double tap or to have the ambient display on all the time. I like how my Wife's S7 shows the clock all the time.
Just slide it a little on the table it will turn on. Mine always does that... sometimes piss me off...lol
