Same problem here, I flashed 4.4 to my phone via ODEN, then did an autoroot. Installing / updating apps works fine. After doing the hotspot mod, any apps that are updated or downloaded will crash when you try to open them.
Hope there is a fix soon
Yeah I know I still haven't figured it out other than I just have to pull the files out n repush the stock files to update apps
Hopefully soon

I had this same issue with NAE hotspot files. CFautoroot worked fine... phone is cool until I installed the hotspot mod files. Every app that updated would become inop with the unfortunately this POS app has crashed and now I going to give you the middle finger etc..etc.... All the apps had the same details in the error report. Had to Reflash NAE because it got so bad I couldn't get to file explore to replace the modded service files. I was applying the hot spot mod by replacing the files using a file explore app.
I installed TWRP to try the recommended method of installing by flashing the .zip through recovery and havn't had a single issue since
Stock 4.4.2 (NAE)
rooted with CFautoroot
TWRP installed through goomanager

you have to download goomanager in the play store first and watch this video how to install TWRP
video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBQTx8FmTtk
Hotspot mod files - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2653666
and then get the zip file for the hotspot mod and put it onto your external sd and go to recovery mode and hit install and then find
your file on your sdcard and swip to install.
Remember to always create a nandriod backup first before flashing the mod!
Hope that helps!

Ok, my apologies, but were the past couple posts directed to the main issue? I got a lil thrown off, but assuming liek everyone else, I am no longer able to open newly installed apps. I can get as far as installing them. But when i try to open them, it force closes " Unfortunately, BlahBlah has stopped ". This be resolved or still a wondering issue?
Resolved by flashing the mod thru twrp recovery basically use Odin and put the twrp tar in pda n flash that and after that is done put the hot spot zip file on your sdcard Then go into recovery n hit install find the zip file and let it install

HotSpot won't activate
I have used root explorer to copy hotspot hack file to framework, then I was getting app crash so flashed stock firmware L720VPUFNAE. Now I am rooted again when I try to turn on hotspot it turns on without notification that "hotspot is activated" and nothing can connect to hotspot. Any suggestion?
Hi s4 users.
I would like to add support for sph-l720 to my app. I can enable hotspot if a user with root can give me file from
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Please be from stock rom fresh after a profile update.
Also indicate exact model from getprop or a look in build.prop
pm me link or come post it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../app-one-click-hotspot-enabler-menus-t2816159
Thanks in advance for anyone who takes a moment of their time for me.

The NAE hotspot has problems if you try to copy the hack in with a file explorer. If you want it to work with no problems you need to flash it with a custom recovery.

If you did did the GPS Fix (assuming you're on stock BML EI22), then you will need to replace the system/vendor/bin/gpsd file or else you will get an Error Status 7 when you try to do the update. You can extract the file from the EI22.zip (If someone can post the file and host it, even better).
I haven't tested the GPS after updating so I don't know if the new gpsd file fixes anything or reverts things back to what they were (ie locking on only 3 or 4 sats). If it has reverted it back, then you will probably have to re-run the GPS Fix again.
i got an error "verifying the script(?)" i forgot the complete error message when i tried to install it from stock ei22 and stock recovery.
Do you think it has to do with the fact that I downloaded within the phone's webbrowser, and renamed it in ES explorer within the phone?
I have trouble mounting my phone to my computer, so i either have to download files to my phone directly from within its own webbrowser, or take the sd card out and mount that seperatly.
@qbking77: you don't need to rename the update file to update.zip since the GB roms the stock reccovery allows you to choose what zip to use.
For me I copied both updates to my card as update.zip, EI22 and update-EL30.zip then I:
1- ODIN'd to EC05
2- shutdown
3- 3 finger salute
4- flashed update.zip (EI22)
5- shutdown
6- 3 finger salute
7- flashed update-EL30.zip
After that I:
A- copied the su.zip that removes the reinstall of stock recovery,
B- ODIN'd cwm 3 but unchecked reboot.
C- pulled battery
D- 3 finger salute
E- flashed the aboved mentioned su.zip
F- flashed cwm5
G- rebooted
That left me with a stock kernel with root and custom recovery. Made a NANDROID and have been tinkering with it.
Right now I'm tring to get CRT-OFF to work.

Even if you're using a stock rom I don't see much benefit in upgrading. GPS was still broken for me and they changed/removed things I liked in the older stock roms (ie: incoming call screen, the alarm screen [took me a while to figure out how to snooze this morning which meant I got to work on time ;-)], the scrolling wallpaper). All minor things but I didn't have any issues with EI22 so...

Sounds like it was an outdated hotspot mod.. restore a nanoid if possible.. If not flash the stock rom that's floating around it someone's repository and start over..
Sorry i cant dig it up for you I'm on my mobile
Side note: if you have a root browser in recovery you could see if the mod backed up the originals and just reinstate them.

Not quite true. You CAN install an OTA if you are rooted, though you WILL lose root and so have to re-root afterwards. Yes, the OTA MAY fail, that's true, but that's usually only the case if you're running an older version of SuperSU that had an issue that's since been fixed.
The trick that messes people up and will cause a failure (though almost definitely not a bricked phone) is you can't have actually made any changes to system files in any way. That obviously means you can't have edited any system files, used any tweaks or mods, etc. It ALSO means you can't have disabled apps using something like Titantium... if you can't disable an app via the standard system app manager but you do through Titantium then that will cause the OTA to fail.
I know this all because I've installed the last three OTAs with root with no issues, but I'm very careful about all of the above because I was burned a few times in the past until I learned

Well I unrooted through supersu n then updated n I put the nae hotspot mod into the framework n backed up the old file by .bak n restarted n the wifi nor the hotshot work ?? N I undid the mod n put the stock back n they still don't work so I unrooted again n they both still don't work

I've been on NAE for quite awhile now. I did a very clean install including wiping the whole internal card using Philz recovery and then using odin to install the TAR file from sammobile.com. I also modified the permissions.xml file to get sdcard access, rooted with CFAutoroot , odin'd Philz latest recovery back in, and flashed fgr's hotspot mod.
Having said that, I keep getting this intermittent notification of a file being downloaded, usually right after a reboot. It's 15.2MB, and unfortunately the only file name I can see is "Samsung..". It has never finished downloading. Today it's at 10.16MB, and then it has paused again. Has anyone else seen this and knows what it is?
Thanks in advance,

UPDATE: 3/30/14
The same method has been confirmed by @Budrweber but instead of using adb, just flash from your ext sd card.
NOTE: ADB SIDELOAD WILL NOT CAUSE A WIPE, BUT PUSHING THE UPDATE FROM EXTERNAL SD WILL WIPE ALL DATA.
Few users have reported unrooting on NB4 after changing files and downloading the OTA and updating normally.
USB DEBUGGING MUST BE ENABLED, if you are this far there is no need for me to explain how to turn it on. If your phone is unresponsive to your computer even though you have installed, re-install via Kies 3. Turn Kies 3 off before running ADB.
First of all, you are going to need an ADB Sideloader and it can be found here.
Install to directory C:\Mini-SDK
We'll come back to ADB later.
Now you're going to need the update file found here.
Rename the file to update. (DO NOT NAME UPDATE.ZIP, JUST "UPDATE".)
Place "UPDATE" into the same directory as your ADB C:\Mini-SDK
Now lets leave ADB and the Update file alone and start replacing the files on your phone!
You'll need the following files.
system/xbin/dexdump (if deleted you can find the file here or you can copy/paste & replace)
system/csc/feature.xml (If deleted find it here.
Delete the original "feature.xml" and rename "feature.xml.bak" to "feature.xml")
Download the fix.zip from this page.
You do not have to reset permissions, I did not how ever do as you feel and works for you.
Step 1 copy the mobicore-presetup.sh to /system/bin
Step 2 copy all the APK files to /system/app.
Now navigate to system/bin
You should have a "ddexe" file, if it is named "ddexe_real", rename it to 'ddexe".
This should fix all the known errors in the process of adb side loading.
If you continue to get more errors use the file dump located here.
UPDATE: app_process is another recurring error, please grab this file from the dump uploaded from @smokeystack76
Now to the fun and most anticipated part of the day...
Volume + button up, power and home button all at the same time. Release once you see Recovery mode.
Navigate to Update from ADB.
Plug up to USB.
Now, when you start windows cmd prompt, you can either start from the ADB folder is located in by control, shift + right clicking or manual cmd.exe in "run" or "search"
Once command prompt is loaded,
Type in the following command.
"CD /D C:/MINI-SDK"
Then if you are in the right directory and you placed the "update" file accordingly... type...
ADB SIDELOAD UPDATE.ZIP(the file name should not have .zip or you will get a "can not read" message.)
and now you should be on your way to 4.4.2 Kit Kat.
Not bad. The system dump is here.
Now you need to post links to this thread in the other thread
Thanks for the step by step. I'll try this tomorrow.
You were on a rooted NB4, correct? You restored to MJ5, updated to NB4, rooted, and then did this?

Correct.
For anyone trying to find an easy way around this whole update mess. Just go to your local best buy store and talk to one of the Samsung reps. They don't have the kit kat update yet but however they can reflash 4.3 on your phone wiping out all your data (make sure you do a back up from home) and this will let you get the OTA update with no problems. My note 3 has been rooted twice one being last night and it worked. Just make sure your not rooted when you take your phone.

So did you root with Kingo too when you were on NB4? I didn't want to use Kingo, but I thought what the heck, and used it for quick rooting. Then after the Kitkat update, I realize I have SuperSU as a system app even after factory reset. Apps like CPU-Z reports my devices is rooted when it's not.
Is this the only thing that's not same as pure stock NC2?

So did you root with Kingo too when you were on NB4? I didn't want to use Kingo, but I thought what the heck, and used it for quick rooting. Then after the Kitkat update, I realize I have SuperSU as a system app even after factory reset. Apps like CPU-Z reports my devices is rooted when it's not.

you can re-run and use kingo to remove the root
Also if you are weary of the update, back up your files and apps then factory reset. Once you are factory reset, download the OTA but just hit "remind me later".
Do the instructions in the OP and after it installs it tells you that you have an update pending, install the update and it covers any files that may have went missing in the update.zip.
If you wanted to be 200% sure.
I am set at official and with no custom lock and Knox is 0x0.
