[Q] Galaxy S5 or keep G2 - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i am curious what my fellow g2 users think about the gs5 unveiling today? will you keep your g2 since honestly the gs5 didnt bring much of anything that is better than what our g2 already has, or will you be trying out the gs5 anyway to make sure you like or dont like it?

Only thing I'd say is that the S5 seems likely to have a better dev community than the G2. Since having the phone, I've been really disappointed in how poorly the XDA G2 forums are run and organized (all variants under one forum; poor responsiveness from the community for questions). From sheer volume of S5 sales, I'd say it's more likely that you'll get a better dev community with that phone.

i'm gonna keep g2 since s5 is not a game changer for me

im keeping my g2...only phones i would upgrade to would be either the g3 or the htc m8 (htc one two)

I'm waiting on the next LG phone, next G2 or G3, or whatever they call it, have had Samsung phones and as long as they insist on using hardware buttons I will avoid them

+1 that. Samsung has been acting like Apple. Once they have the market share they become complacent. I will always support an underdog as long as they are innovative and take chances. The G3 will be mine...although the M8 by hTc looks interesting.

Neither the s5 or the g2. Go with the upcoming htc one m8, its got some serious development. If the htc m8 comes with 1080p screen that means the oppo find 7 will be the only phone on the.market that has a 2k screen which is going to impressive.

Keeping g2. Samsung is preloaded with too much bloat/excess i do not care about or want in my phone. Yes i can remove that stuff but its just the point. Reminiscent of old moto blur

I wouldn't want the s5 to locked down the HTC m8 looks cool but I will probably stick with the g2 its amazingly fast and does everything I need it to

G2 only because Galaxy S5 has a smaller screen with a larger body size ... And Samoled. And Touchwiz. ...Maybe Xperia Z2?

I personally owned the original Note, the Galaxy S3, and the S4.....Samsung/ATT really pissed me off with the recent updates to the S4 and locking it down pretty good. (I know its ATT, but there is still knox) but still I switched from Apple to Android because IF I wanted to test the new firmware or CM or AOKP's I could...the S4 stopped me from doing that. I have been able to with the G2. I don't think I will ever buy another Samsung phone again. I love the G2, plus the S5 has the same processor as the G2. It seems more like a side-grade VS. an actual upgrade. My next phone will be the G3 or the HTC....but so far...LG has my money. Also I like the UI of the G2 much better than touchwiz. Just my 2 cents.

and whats the point in having that?samsung battery are crap my girlfriend charge it 2 times a day on s4 really crappy,no gram. touchwiz is bad too.
all the games on g2 runs smooth.
the only feature that is missing is the sd card slot thats all.

If i'm not mistaken i've read Snapdragon 800 and i've seen 801....so not sure which one it actually is. But yes Im pretty sure 801 is just a higher clocked 800. Also i've seen Krait 400 and Adreno 330 on both CPUs which should be the same GPU power. Llike I said...the S5 is basically catching up to the power of the LG G2 which was released long before S5...

You've read 800 because the places you read it from didn't know at the time what it would have. Now that it's announced and people have looked at its about phone info, it says 801. And I agree with you. In not trading in my g2 for a phone that basically just caught up to it in terms of hardware. I may be intrigued if it had a camera with ois but it doesn't.

I was really disappointed in the s5. I read and was expecting a much more drastic change to design, which I think is greatly needed. None of the specs really seem to beat the G2 either. I do not really see any reason to switch except the removable battery and the guarantee of a great large dev community.
Surprisingly, the only phone I would consider vs the G2 I'd Song's new Z2. It has great specs, an amazing camera, and a beautiful design. I have never had any experience with a Sony smartphone though. But the same could have been said for LG and I love the g2.
The days of extreme yearly improvements are understandably over I think.

i agree. i would add the g3 to the mix of my interest also. i am betting it will have a 1440p display with a larger battery. while 1440p on a phone is not needed, it is evolution. the one thing i keep hearing about sony phones when on xda is that they are very easy to dev with. sony is supposedly great for the dev community. that only adds to their device appeal.

I love the G2 as well. I just wish LG would unlock the bootloader for the international version to make it easier for the devs.

I think this will answer all questions of whether we should keep G2 or go for S5:
If after getting used to the bezels of the G2 we can even stomach the S5, then you can. I am sticking to the G2, and will eventually look for a G4/S6.

Is the G2 better? I dont wanna jump ship and be disappointed. I have a red S4 and am fairly bored with it. The whole locked bootloader thing sucks. Dont get me wrong, I like the phone but have simply become bored with it. What would you do?

I have a gs4 on Verizon as well. I switch between that and my dna for some change up. my gs4 is rooted though, so I've been enjoying custom roms... but to be honest, the only thing I like about the phone anymore is it's smaller footprint and it's camera. I hate amoled screens now especially since my gs4 status bar is beginning to burn in already after only having it since the end of may... and i just hate the look of amoled. sure pure black is great but the colors suck.
the camera kills my dna though, and that's why I still like it. but the g2 camera from the review I read on phone arena yesterday, seems to be on par or better than the gs4 so I'm excited.
plus look how snappy the g2 is compared to the laggy s4. my s4, even in custom roms, is still choppy and annoying.
gs4 has amazing battery life tho, and kills my dna, but the g2 should be even better. my gs4 and dna both heat up like crazy so here's hoping the g2 runs cooler!

If you want something different, go for a Windows Phone or iPhone. The GS4 is already the best thing on Android. The LG G2 isn't much better. If you think the GS4 is laggy, then Android will lag no matter what even on a faster Snapdragon 800, which really isn't that much faster than a 600. 400mhz more isn't gonna mean jack for lag, because its not the processor causing it. Everything else is identical. Cheap plastic body. Slightly bigger screen. Same shape. Same UI design and features aside from some color choices. The LG G2 is even more boring than the GS4 when it first came out. LG isn't shy about copying Samsung, so it is basically just their version of the S4.
If you wanna stay with Android, the Xperia Z1 is also coming out this month, with a 20MP camera and a very different design than the plastic Korean phones. The UI is different too, although I don't like Sony's Timescape UI. IF you wanna be a rebel, Oppo is announcing the N1 later this month and probably releasing it next month. It should have a big camera sensor and big screen. Seems to be very easy to customize and install ROMs on if you don't like the gaudy colors of their COLOR ROM.

If windows didnt suck so bad I might. I'm just saying ive never gotten too bored with any phone except this one. It's weird. The screen is starting to degrade a bit as well. If I don't get the G2 I'll get the 5S. Maybe the note 3 even it drops.

dude, your lag argument is irrelevant. the gs4 doesn't lag on stock android. it lags because of touchwiz. the g2 ui is much more streamlined than touchwiz. there's no hiccups from what I've seen.

Not really, Krait 400 is much faster, as is Adreno 330. The clock speed isn't everything. I believe it has a larger L2 cache.

Lol LG is nowhere near the level of significance of Samsung. Samsung doesn't care what phone or tablet LG comes out with, because they will continue to dominate the mobile industry along with Apple. Like it or not, that's just how it is.

yes that's how it is, however the one on top isn't always the best... i. e., apple and samsung. it's a popularity contest. don't get me wrong, I do like my gs4 and I liked my gs3, but i love my dna more.. except for the awful battery... and that's by htc, a failing company that's nowhere near as popular as the two. I'm not the type of person who goes omfgz i need that brand bc im a typical American statuswhore. I get what's good. LG is a big name and big company and has been for years, and just bc they're not on the top doesn't mean they don't make a good product.

Samsung really wasn't relevant until fairly recently. The Galaxy S was a great phone, but not popular, same goes for the S2. The S3 however was huge and launched Samsung into dominance and made HTC fall. However, the same could easily happen to LG, HTC, or Motorola at any time. All it takes is a couple great phones in a row. Apple had a great first couple iPhones, which made them prominent. Same goes for Samsung, who continues to make great phones, but really aren't exponentially better than the other manufacturers. Both companies also have huge, genius advertising campaigns, so that certainly helps them a lot and appeals to people particularly who aren't as knowledgeable as we, on XDA, are about phones.

The S4 and G2 lag...I have both and a Nexus 4. Now the N4 never lagged. The G2 animations suck! But the phone is sick. My Fav so far. Plenty of features, great screen, camera and call quality. Speakers suck tho....not loud enough.

Nexus 4 doesn't lag. Its a great choice if you like to tinker around in the android world. It heats up a lot though. The CPU may soon to be slightly outdated, but since it houses an adreno 320 paired with a 1280x768 resolution, its not gonna have problems running games since its pushing far less pixels than phones such as the GS4, Xperia Z etc. Camera isn't bad, not that good either, although HDR makes up for it and looks really good. iPhones and Windows phones will surely bore this guy. Also GS4 is not the best android phone whatsoever, it may come close, but no. Another great choice would be HTC one Google play edition if you're willing to spend a ton. FYI: Nexus 4 price is lowered if it's in consideration.

Strange, you managed to misspell "advertizing and marketing" and instead got word "significance". Samsung wouldn't even catch Apple lest it flood internet advertising with money and Apple digged own grave by issuing "patent suites" against Samsung. It better not.
If Sony tomorrow would spend 15 B in advertising the day after tomorrow everybody will buy himself a Sony Honamy and forget of Samsung, rest assured
I don't care for some significance for somebody as long as my phone flies and works w/o a hitch and doesn't crack in jeans pocket as S4 does and etc

Correct, that's the main and only reason of Samsung became significant.
unfortunately, some of us are stuck on crappy verizon, so a nexus device isn't in our future. the n4 looks sick, yeah and nexus devices hardly ever lag, but honestly, the videos I've seen on the g2 don't look choppy at all like the s4 did when it came out.

Why you think so? No. It has shrinked 2600mAh instead of 3000mAh in international, but pair of batteries instead of 1, removable back cover and microsd slot. It's international version w/o microSD is dumbed down in fact, and Korean contrary is full-featured

well said. I'm so tired of hearing about how Samsung dominates and everyone's comparing every phone to the s4. honestly the physical button is enough to turn me off to the whole phone. the lgog was good and I'm definitely considering it. I might go the s4 way if I was gonna leave it stock, but like you said about huge advertising divisions and whatnot.. alot of people don't even know you can switch things up with something like a rom. so, baked-in features usually wind up selling a phone.

Well it is only one generation up from the G4. The screen is arguably not an upgrade unless you dislike amoled. The phone is faster but doubt you'd notice that much IRL. It is a bare incremental upgrade and definitely not a big one. I would not upgrade unless it cost nothing.

Not a huge upgrade, no. Screen is slightly bigger, camera is about the same, speed is slightly faster. I sold my GS4 to go to a G2, but that was more frustration about the AMOLED screen. I prefer the camera on the GS4 but pretty much prefer everything else on the G2.

I say its big because the s4 is just so bad, but that's my opinion based off my experience owning one for two months. But the reason I'm responding to your comment is because you reminded me how I made a hundred dollars the day I got my g2 because I was able to sell my s4 for 330 (literally a few hours after getting the g2) and used an upgrade to get the g2 which cost 230 total Was a good day to be done with that phone, get a better one, and have an extra hundred cash in my pocket.
perhaps the OP could do something similar. I'm sure some sucker...I mean samsung fanboy would give you 300 or more for the s4.
Not having to worry about screen burn in is the biggest advantage imo.

If you own an exynos S4 dont,if its the snapdragon 600,for only 110 go for it.
Do it and yes everything about the g2 is an upgrade the fact that it doesn't have 500 add-ons that you will never use and you need to turn off to save battery life is the biggest thing
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Do it, I couldn't get througvery full day on the S4 but on my G2 it's a breeze even on heavy use. I was astounded at the slight upgrade in screen size which feels like so much bigger but without the bulk of a Note device. I love the edge to edge display and how my fingers roll off the sides (in a good way, like futuristic).
OK u guys talked me into it. Just bought one on swappable for 490 and sold my for 390. I can live with that. And if the battery is as good as u dak says I will be very happy. Today I'm 6 hours in and have 10% battery left, so I will have to swap to my spare in a minute. Thanks yall

I agree 100% with this statement. I came the G2 from the S4 and this is the best phone that "I" have had. It's also the first phone that I have preferred using a stock based ROM. In the end though, it's all personal opinion.
I came from a S4 as well and my G2 Running CM is blazing fast.
The battery life is allot better as well, even when the screen brightness is 100%.
I'm also coming from s4, no big difference on performance (both running cm 10.2). Moving to g2 mainly due to larger capacity battery
Everything is an upgrade specially the battery. I notice though that the G2 takes a bit more time launching apps but not really by a big margin. Maybe flashing ROMs like stock would improve the G2 but that's not my cup of tea now due to lack of time. I loved my S4 but I love my G2 even more.

I have them side by side right now just swapped my stuff over from my Verizon S4 to a Vzw G2 running clean rom on both and I have to say the G2 is quite a bit speedier. I moved over mainly because I was one of the dumb ones who took the first me7 ota and couldn't install any aosp roms which killed it for me.
Love the G2 so far!

I have both right and still deciding which one to keep.
Have S4 since May and have G2 since yesterday (the new gadget factor is still working in my mind), having 6 days left to return it to the shop.
So far, I think it is a small upgrade and with compromises, and not a few...
Pros - G2
- Slightly bigger screen (only if you root and hide soft keys, otherwise it is actually smaller on real usable space).
- Better Processor.
- Better GPU.
- Much better whites than S4.
- Have a better overall look.
Pros - S4
- Better Amoled screen viewing angles. I'm 4 years on Amoled and just now, looking at a top of line LCD I understood how good its (Amoled) viewing angles are.
- Much better screen blacks than G2.
- SD Card.
- Removable battery.
- Lighter.
- Smaller.
- Slightly Better camera.
- 100% flat screen (great for applying screen protectors).
- Better accessories.
The S4 pros list is longer but for me Screen, CPU and GPU tops anything else and those are better on G2.
The G2 upgrade is that small that in January S5 will be a much bigger upgrade from G2 than G2 is from S4.

[Q] why did you go with the G2?

So, I have a Samsung S2 (Sprint)
it's time to upgrade.
It's probably the S4 or the G2 at this point
seems like the S4 has more developers at this point.
but, all I really need is root and wifi tether.
thoughts?

If you like to flash Roms and experiment go with the s4. But if you want top of the line specs with incredible battery life get the g2.
The display on the G2 IMO is superior to that of the s4. It's my view that the G2 display coupled with the thinnest bezels on any international device makes it the 2nd best display after the one on the HTC One X (I really miss that display sorely). The processor on board is also the higher snapdragon model and it shows. Both the S4 and the G2 exhibit SOME frame drops/lag but the G2 is overall a much smoother and less laggy device as compared to the S4. There seems to be consensus regarding this matter by all who reviewed both devices. The camera on both are comparable, one better in some areas than the other in other areas. The battery is reported to be easily better on the G2. My experience has been VERY good and I can get 5 hours+ of screen on time with very heavy use on mobile data. Finally, the G2 would feel like a 'new' device simply because it isn't another Samsung similar to the one you own. Makes the upgrade worth it.
thanks
thank you for both for your opinions. Very helpful.

In a similiar boat. The S3 just wasn't enough of an upgrade to get me out of my Skyrocket, and by the time the S4 came out the styling just got plain ugly (it didn't age well IMO). Was looking hard at the S4 Active, as I liked the uniqueness of the physical buttons and the waterprooffedness, but I'm fan of the pink unicorn and didn't want to get locked into a carrier specific phone with no dev support.
Ultimately what did it for me was that it was on sale for $99, Skyrockets still bring $150 or so on fleabay, so I wanted to get out before it was totally worthless. And that glorious screen, oh, that glorious screen (HTC one was too damn heavy and the lower case htc logo looked childish to me).
Came from the S2 to the G2 on Monday. The G2 rocks. Processor and battery are unbelievable compared to a S2. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Anyone considering a Galaxy S5 upgrade?

I know it's not too much of an upgrade.. but I'm considering it because I like Samoled displays.. especially if they improved the whites on the GS5's screen like I've read. Also the camera looks pretty great .. super fast action and real time preview HDR. also.I kinda miss the hardware'ish buttons versus our software on screen buttons. I however don't enjoy Touchwiz.. but a good launcher will help that. Also the phone looks a little tacky on the back as well as looks like the gs2 from the front. Any other pro's/con's? I guess it's pretty subjective. Kudos for Lg though on a device that will last at least 2 upgrade life-cycles at least and still be relevant.
umm not exactly, G2 is a neat device.
Potential ways are -> htc m8 or LG G3 when it comes out
Will not because Sam$hit will shove Exynos down our throats in India.
I just switch from S4 to G2. I saw the S5. Not tad interested with it. That's why I switch to G2 immediately. It's about the same in specs. I like the G2 designs much better. Hope LG keeps up with the Android version though..
The s5 has Knox.. If you love both flashing and and warranty, screw Samsung and their **** hahaha

No.
I had all the Galaxy S devices up to the S4, I really don't see the need to switch from my G2 to the S5. Nothing new or revolutionary there.
Had an S3, S4, and then switched to the G2. I love this phone so much more than either of the Galaxies I had. I was very disappointed with the S5 announcement and am definitely looking forward to learning more about the G3. The OnePlus One is also a very interesting contender.
Will be moving from the g2 to the m8. Development on the htc is in a different league. The g2 has too many variants which is a headache for developers and users. My biggest concern with the htc was the battery life, and so far most reviews have been showing very good results. As far as the s5 i think its the biggest disappointment of the year.
Anyone considering an iPhone 6 so that there would be no more whining about OS update, this provider vs that provider vs international vs ......

Nope!
God no. I felt sorry for Samsung back when Apple fought them, but now they're just complete trash.
How is the s5 an "Upgrade" that would be a lateral move at best. But considering g2 was released last year, and the s5 isn't even out ...... that's a bad sign lol
I had all Galaxy S devices and I enjoyed developing for them but I trade my S4 for the following reasons.
1. Knox bootloader, 2. Camera on my S3 was better in zooming than my S4, 3, same **** like Iphone I wanted something different.
So my only choices was either the G2 or the HTC ONE and I got the G2 because Camera was a big issue for me and that Htc one had a ****ty camera, 4MP will always be 4MP so at cropping and zooming was not good and specially that hardware issue with purple ink pictures at low light.
Now then I dropped my G2 and cracked the screen. I was giving it a big thought about getting another phone instead of fixing mine but there were no other phones that satisfy me as the G2 so I fixed.
Now to your question..... Yes the S5 have a good camera specks and the new HTC ONE does too but LG still havent released the G3 and I'm sure it will be a killer. That new M8 sure looks good but still a 4MP so not for me.

If you could, would you use the Moto G for a year and wait for the LG G4?

I've been following this phone for a while, and while I think it'll be the best flagship out this cycle for me, I'm still not too happy with the fact that it's an 801 processor trying to push a 1440p screen.
I'm still split between waiting out about a year for the G4 while using the Moto G or just taking the plunge and getting this phone. Hopefully an 810 processor (or 808 at the worst) should be able to handle the screen without battery/heat/staggering issues.
For people who've used this phone for a while, if you could return your G3 for a full refund and wait for the G4 with a Moto G, would you?

As mentioned by someone else, the screen resolution hardly impacts performance, the 801 chip can handle a 4k screen pretty easily, the problem lies with optimisations, the G2 was the same when it came out, but software updates made it the phone we know for speed today.
, I personally have no heating issues on software 10H, lag does exist but its just a few frame rates, its as fast as any other 801 at opening apps. The moto G is a nice phone, your best bet is holding out until LG fix issues with a software update.
I have both a Verizon prepaid MotoG and just recently a Verizon LG G3. Both are very nice phones. I use the G3 though.
Yup.. on initial my firmware 10b alot of people were quick to judge the capability of the 801 due to the micro-stutters.
Right now I'm on 10j and all seems well. You'll be surprised how well the 801 handles the 1440p display.
And for your question.. personally, no. The G4 will bring in more unknown issues and satisfaction will never be there. If budget is an issue, then wait and save up. If not, I rather just get the latest and greatest right now.
I sense alot of people are eagerly waiting for a 805 device but the fact is it's aint leaps better. The nVidia K1 is a better beast. So I'm sensing if the G4 may not be alot better than the G3 depending on the chip they use. And if they go beyond 5.5", I'm totally out. Smartphone technology seemed to be saturated at this moment.
One can always wait for the next greatest product. We don't know anything about the G4 so how can anyone advise you to wait for it - or not?
When do you think the g4 will come out? That seems like a long wait..

I think that issues you mention is software maturity problem. Mostly solved in 10j firmware. It play games smoothly so i dont see any problem with 801 on 1440p, maybe in benchmark but i dont play bench.
Im not gonna trade G3 with any other phone at the moment.
If Xiaomi Redmi 1s arrived earlier in my country, I'd bought it first then wait for Nexus 6...
But I'm satisfied with my G3 now.
The phone (G3) is great but if you feel no reason to upgrade, I'd say wait.
There's always going to be something better around the corner.
If anything, wait until you're so intrigued by a phone that you don't have to ask yourself that question and you'll just go along and buy it.
New Tegras on the way, those should be nice.
So the G4 won't have any issues? Once any flagship device drops you can be assured that there will be issues associated with that device.
i wouldnt have the moto g in the first place..i would have gotten the n5 instead
I would, rite the way. I regret buying this phone and i am thinking about selling it and going back to my nexus 4 and wait for the next nexus.

Really? I've got the nexus 4 now and have had it since it came out and I'm looking for an upgrade. I want a bigger screen, better battery and camera.
Why do you regret the purchase?
My nexus 4 is in mint condition, rooted bit stock and never overclocked. This one is only a few months old as I did a warranty replacement. Let me know if you are interested in selling and swapping.
The problem with waiting for new models is that there are always new models coming out. It is a tough call especially when not knowing about certain models and what they will offer.

I have my nexus 4 that's why I'm thinking about switching back but thanks for the offer only thing I would miss is the big screen and the camera but overall the nexus 4 feels snappier than my G3 a lot of times...
My nexus4 developed the same dead area in the center of the touchscreen that most of them do eventually. I still have it, but my Nexus5 and now my G3 are a lot more fun. I also have a MotoG and it fits really nicely in my hand - the G3 is really just a bit too big for complete comfort, particularly with any kind of case on it (necessary).
That little MotoG is really a remarkable device.
Thanks, still love my nexus 4 but really getting itchy for something new.
Is your main reason for not wanting the lg g3 just the lag? I'm hoping that stuff will be fixed with updates..
I may end up waiting for the note 4.. Not sure yet but really looking for a larger screen now.

Well, basically yes, the phone is not fluid, and I also started to have the shutdown/reboot bug. All of these I believe to be a hardware issue, and I think LG should recall and replace all these units. It's not nice having a meltdown on a phone. I also think is behind with software, Sony devices are already on 4.4.4 while we are on 4.4.2 (at least me). Also the UI is fugly and unoptimized imo, after having Sony and Nexus devices, I would say Song's UI is the sexiest, if I can't get that, I'd go aosp. But I do like how sexy the phone looks like, I like the camera but the options are limited - there I think again, Sony leads the way -, and I like the remote control. The screen would be awesome if it wouldn't be the reason of the overheating - with the other hardware elements together of course.

Then just get a Note 4.
The 801 has more than enough balls for the qhd display. I can play games smoothly with my cpu and gpu downclocked.
