Galaxy S5 just announced. And I have to say, the Z2 kicks it's ass. Heck, the Z1 might even have a thing or two to say to it. Never thought I'd see the day. But some features Samsung omitted are odd. Especially when u consider 3GB RAM and 4K recording can be gotten on the note 3.
No QHD screen and 'only' a 16MP camera, albeit with faster AF fix times and improved HDR. Even Samsung is running out of things to wow people with.
The fingerprint detection isn't meant to be that hot either, and waterproofing? Yeah, that's unique.
But Sony has been a bit lucky as it could have been a lot more, leaving the Z2 looking like a poor show.
The only 2 things that got me excited about Galaxy S5 are the ultra power saving mode, which is putting an Amoled screen to a good use and the 10hr LTE web browsing. I won't believe it until I test that in person though. That sound's nuts, taking into account that I usually get about 3hrs on screen time with Z1 and when testing Z1 Compact I managed to get around 5hrs.
S5 is like:
Samsung S5 is old people phone Private mode, kids mode for your grandchildren Camera sticking out OLD, but not for huge Nokia camera + backside looks like old case, that was attracting to the eyes and a HEART MONITOR? Why? Old people will really like that, phone + heart monitor, 2 in 1

Samsung S5 looks like ****
Specwise it's about the same as Z2 probably. But Z2 looks 100 times better
Why should this even be a surprise? The Galaxy series have never been great phones for people in the techie crowd. They're more for the average John Q Public.
Could anyone post some pictures so let the mocking begin

Umm, op... Could you please change title to "Galaxy S5 announced. Z1 kicks it's ass" xD . Cause that is what's true already. No need for Z2 in comparison with disappointing S5!!
Honestly even the Z1 looks better than the S5. Considering the amount of hype Samsung generated with their 'overhauled' UI and new metal frame, the end product is complete crap. Just look at it...it looks like a cheap chinese ripoff. Somehow I think it looks even worse than the S4. Even the 'all new' UI is the same crap with new icons. No innovation either, they blatantly ripped off the fingerprint scanner and waterproofing from Apple and Sony. Samsung make the most uninspired, overpriced crap I have ever come across. Touchwiz is sh*t and their design is sh*t. I really wish Sony or HTC had the marketing budget of Samsung so that their phones can become popular and represent Android instead of Samsung. Why anyone would buy this over the LG G2, new HTC One or Z2 is beyond me.

lol, Samsung do to pump out clones of their own before chinese knock off flood the market with galaxy clones. Yeah, really wish Sony got the same kind of backing from the Japanese government like Samsung does for mega marketing campaign. And they also need to get their stuffs out quick, heard Z2 won't be available in NA for at least 2 months after other regions, by then all competitors would have sold millions already.

Awesome... I had one of those in 1998
Really, I though guys are overreacting but it really looks plastic and cheap...
But, as I said many times before, I never liked Samsung, it always look kinda cheap to me...
But there's many great friends (mine) who are loving it - so I'm happy because they got a new toy (this time it's a real toy .)
BTW, if it's powered by KitKat, how come Samsung are allowed to use that kind of battery icon?
I thought Google was clear about KitKat icon philosophy...hmm....

I cannot wait for the Z2. Haven't been this excited about a phone since I got my first android phone (desire) about 4 years ago. The specs seem perfect, but the only thing I'm wary of is the size of the phone. Will it be too bulky?

You guys are forgetting the rumor about a premium version of the S5, i doubt Samsung will remain with that piece of crap(still high end flagship hardware) as their flagship for a whole year
They must be planning to release that premium metal version we've all heard about
Sent from my C6906 using Tapatalk
And why do they keep insisting on trying to make phones that have removable batteries waterproof? Best case scenario users become paranoid and worry about the casing staying attached (and it's gonna wear eventually), worst case scenario a whole bunch of phones ruined due to "user manufacturer error".

If the S4 is their flagship, we can assume it will sell for around $800. How much are they going to charge for the so-called 'premium' line? $1000+? You'd have to be a fool to buy that with phones like the Z2 and HTC One already having the premium status for much less.

XDA Members & I9300 Owners:
Here we are... at the end of yet another long statistics and promises-laden tech event. The devices were many; the showstoppers few. Yet here we are... flipping through XDA as usual. What devices caught your eye? What devices surprised you, and what devices did not? Will any of you be jumping ship from the I9300; and if you will, are any of you valued developers? How have the events of the past 24 hours changed your foreseeable future? More importantly, how do you think the past day has changed XDA's foreseeable future? Do you see high-traffic camera threads in XDA's future? Do you see Windows Phone 8's clean build usurping the DIY appeal of Android? What are your thoughts?

I agree with most of that. The Note always attracts attention. However, even with as much of a hit as it was, I don't see myself buying one. I already have an N7000, and I'm not too fond of the switch from 1280x800 to 1280x720 or the lower DPI. The N7000 was already right on the border between visible pixels and retina-size pixels.
On another note, did anybody notice the 7" gaming tablet from Archos? They always make the crappiest stuff. Then, out of nowhere, they announce this kick-ass beast. I'll be getting one of those for sure!

Nokia must be panicking now after the specs of the windows phone were released. It's an awesome package. Did you see the back of the device? It's beautiful (the front not so much, as already mentioned). Why the GSIII doesn't have that quality is beyond me. Metal over plastic every time. It's a no brainer. It oozes quality.
In the end though, it's a windows phone. That in itself will mean the development of the device (from here and professional developers) will be limited.
Still love the back though.

its poor to admit such things publicly , each phone has their own advantage.
s3- fast and cutting edge features
iphone - reliable
nexus - google experience
sony - best looking phones
Off course it can't compete right now without a single handset 100% Sony.
What we have available is Sony Ericsson's devices with Sony brand.
Next year will be the year.
I really need a decent display with a lot of power under the hood.

You spelt "totally locked up and uncustomisable" wrongly.
They might not compete with iphone5 or Galaxy S3 but not all people are looking for these high-end phones. Not everybody are flashaolic nerds like me. I know a lot of people who still use their phone as a.... PHONE!!! In this category Sony is still a good choice for a phone.(Even I never owned one)
I agree Sony is by far the best looking and best screen android phone, but the miss some points like locked bootloaders and not so good cameras.
I had a xperia s and the device from specs was very nice, from specs I would prefer it as the S3 processor beast. But then with the use you miss important things like USB on the go (not workink but promised) and the 12 mp cam was a piece of SH....
If that happens, maybe Sony will take Samsung's place. Sony devices are in fact, powerful with great support (Also AOSP)
And the system is 200% cleaner than TouchWiz.

it's nonsense to rival iphone. Android doesn't rival, Android beats.
If I am not wrong (stopped stalking for latest releases after buying the S3), Sony still doesn't have a quad core flagship, so if you were indeed a Sony lover you would have already accepted the fact that right now they don't aim for specs (like Samsung does obviously) and like to provide a nice quality phone with decent price, specs and software (updates + aosp release). This is not at all a bad thing and I like where Sony are headed in the Android world.
Sony has cut back a lot, austerity for them due to a loose wallet subsidising blueray with the PS3. Imagine SGS3 costing 20% of its production costs
They hardly make anything themselves now. It's like Honda giving up and rebranding Kia's instead. Karma me thinks, for Sony Music being fascist psychopathic murdering scum

Why does everyone use iphone and reliable in the same sentence? What's not reliable with an android phone? If anything, an iphone is much more unreliable (not hardware-wise, more like software-wise. Have you ever actually owned an iDevice in real life? If you did, you'd notice there are a lot more freezes and app crashes than with android.
Also, how can it be reliable if it doesn't even have proper multitasking?
Sony's 2013 top devices will have S4 PRO,5" 1080p screens,2gb RAM,water resistance, dragontrail glass,Exmor RS 16.2 mpx and 13mpx with third generation dual LED and the sexy look that only Sony know how to do...
But we just can wait with the best device in our hands right now.
If Sony really puts some weight behind these words, and they use the ST-Ericsson NovaThor SoCs next year, they will blow everything out of the water. The STE processors will be manufactured by Samsung, so they will have arguably the best mobile manufacturing process out there for the moment, while having the ImgTech G6xx0's GPUs which seem to look pretty unchallenged in performance.
Up until now all of Sony's devices were just outdated by a good more than half a year. In the mobile space where we basically have 1 year long product cycles, that's half of a product lifetime. The Xperia T is a nice phone, but at this point in time it's basically the same internal hardware as the One XL/S and NA S3's, which are 6+ months old. Don't get me started on the previous "flagships".
Let's hope they can deliver. They have the hardware available to do it.

I currently have the SIII but below that Sony does better than Samnsung, in price/quality, at least in my country.

thats another part of the story
I tried so hard analyzing but now at last I know their reasoning behind releasing Xperia S, Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia Acro S, Xperia T, and whatever Xperia (ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ) phone they released this year. All along and all this time, those phones were meant to challenge Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation, iPhone4s and other phones from last year! What kind of mindset is that for a company? What have you become Sony? Argh!
The iPhone's implementation of panorama is a great example on why Apple are so good at creating user experiences for the lowest common denominator.
Yes, that's a nice way of saying it's made for stupid people. But making things for stupid people requires very smart ideas.

Yeah, but alot of the CM devs seem to like Xperia phones since Sony actually works closely with them so they have functional source drops, blobs and documentation... Which means that Sony is good enough for people who are interested in their designs.

I love Sony and I hope they can see success in the future. I'm a Sony loyalist to the bitter end. I would love to see them make a Nexus device in the future. I would consider buying one of their products if they made devices that mattered. Sony used to "wow" the world with their innovation and design. I find it sad to see them make marginalized products. Even Steve Jobs tried copying their design and that says something. With that said, this phone looks like a step in the right direction. The physical design is stunning and I’m sure the screen tech will blow people away, however I really think they needed to bring their A-game, but this looks like another phone that will get lost in the shuffle. In terms of specs, it would have been awesome if they stuffed a newly announced Tegra 4 and some new battery tech (keep in mind Sony is a major manufacture of high-tech batteries). Sony really needs a game changing device to blow away companies like Samsung & Apple and I don’t see this being that type of a device.
Why is this on the Nexus 4 forum?

Just as the Engadget Podcast said.... when was the last time you could remember a hit phone by Sony? Android? Nope sorry. Yes they have tried, but their company is more PS3 and other things focused. Yes maybe they are now realizing that Mobile is THE place to be( a little late there) and hopefully they can get their sh*t together. I love my PS3 and other Sony products but their presence is not felt in the mobile industry, regardless of how good their hardware is. My first Samsung phone, OEM wise. I had a Gnex before. This is, however, my very last Samsung device. EVER. I will never buy another Faildung device again. Deciding which phone will be my bext is hard, though, because I'm considering either the Xperia Z, HTC One or the next Nexus. Maybe not the HTC after all because I don't feel like messing with locked down bootloaders (unless they're nexii because it's a simple fastboot command to lock/unlock at your will)

Clearly not the case with iPhones, ^^
Inspired by nature, yeah right.
Two words: dog poo.
Its natural

The Inspired by Nature thing was a huge marketing fail in my view.

I'm quite happy with my samsung. Had the S II before this S III and I guess I like the multitude of roms available. Sure, Samsung needs to get their Exynos sources out in the wild but even without them AOSP, Cyanogenmod and AOKP aren't that bad. Used those type of Roms for a while and never thought I would flash a Samsung based rom again... Until a few weeks ago. You could say there's alot of bloatware in the stock rom and you're absolutely right. On the other hand, some bloat is really "useful". For me personally I really like showing photos and videos directly on my TV without having to open a third party DLNA app. I like how easy it is to root and unroot everything back to stock. I like my external SD card, removable battery. I like how their phones feel in my hand. My girlfriend has an Xperia S and although I kinda like the design, it just doesn't feel right in the hand nor are the menu and back button easy to touch. I think the S4 with a Snapdragon or Exynos with sources will be the perfect phone. Gonna hold on to my S III for the time being or till I have one of my impulsive buying sprees.
Personally, I don't really "get" the Nature bit. Bit of a Marketing thing, differentiation and all that USP stuff.
I'm actually quite happy with the S3. I've a later one, mind. I've never had any funny reboots whatever firmware I used, never had any marks or cracks and the battery life on a Stock or Stock based ROM is rather good.
My primary likes are:
Good sound, great FM radio (I use this a lot due to a serious walking regime - I'm probably of a similar age to one of you other guys). The call quality and general signal sensitivity (GPS/FM/Cell/WiFi/BT) are really good. The notification LED is a real boon too - not having to wake the phone to see missed activity or see something come in during a meeting is fantastic.
The screen is truly oleophobic AND scratch-resistant - I hate screen protectors - they're hard to fit properly and look sh1t quickly.
They hold their value well if looked after cosmetically.
In a word then it is reliable - and eminently modifiable.
The things I dislike are:
The screen is just not bright enough outside even without direct sunlight. Hopelessly dim. This is the biggy for me - walking whilst outside and trying to read anything is just a joke.
The Samsung software is cobbled together, and feels so. Fortunately I remove most of it, but the core is still there... and their non-open source approach and lack of engagement with their development community is a "shame".
A soft gel case is a necessity or you will drop it. I never have. Touch wood.
The accessories supplied are 2nd rate. Belies the cost of the phone.
Replacing the screen and digitizer as a unit (the only real way to do it) is f.expensive (I did a mate's - £150)
I would buy another Samsung, I had the SGS2 and that was good for its time too. My wife's 2 yo Omnia 7 is also reliable and she has had no issues with that either. My eldest daughter's Xperia S has started losing pixels. My youngest daughter's HTC ONE S is totally stock and has randomly rebooted from new for no obvious reason. And this is the 4th Amazon BNIB replacement. It looks like crap too after a few weeks as the black finish is brittle.
Problem is, what else is there?
S4 - unknown quantity (might not have an FM Radio, might be Snapdragon or not), £600 and being an early adopter means beta tester.
HTC ONE - even if you can get hold of one, too early to tell if they are reliable or durable and the modding potential is not great.
Nexus 4 - No FM radio and LG not the world's best phone designer
Sony Z - good but odd in the hand and screen dim - massive development potential though thanks to Sony.
LG Optimus G - not readily available, too expensive, no FM radio and no development community and Billy Bland.
Note 2 - get real. S3 on acid with a silly stick, has its own identity crisis.
I would like the OPPO Find 5 - but not available and may not have an FM Radio or LED notification. Or development potential. I have an OPPO Blu-Ray player that is utterly fantastic. For those that remember, like a Nakamichi tape deck style quality.

With the current discussions going on in the general thread (eels, lube, etc.) I don't think many dare entering, or even stay after they've entered so I thought I'd liven the place up a bit.

Your location reminds me of my favorite Orbital song!
So it has arrived, with it's super thin bezel, 5.2inch True HD IPS LCD, Snapdragon 800 CPU, 3000mAh battery and new LG UI:

With all the GS4 complaints I see around here, some seem fed up with it, so, who of you will be getting this new beast?
Me, I'm very happy with my GS4, yeah it's got its flaws but the pros far outweigh them, and I'm still loving my Octa beast!

And you think the LG G2 won't have any? I haven't seen an "issue free" phone launched in the past eighteen months by any manufacturer and that includes the Nexi. Some flaws/issues push individual's buttons more than others so going to another phone may be right for them. But they're just trading one set of issues/flaws/compromises for another.

Errm...where did I say it wouldn't have any flaws?
It's simply a thread to see who's leaving and what people feel about the closest competition to the GS4. It's like some of you are reading way too much into it.

Apparently that is Market Dependant, major letdown if the major markets don't get it. Don't know why they don't just release them all with SD slot.

Because some carriers want to force people to use the cloud so that they can sell them more data allowance.

Looks like a pretty cool phone! That button is an interesting idea. Don't know why we have to make it a pissing contest with the sgs4. They are just phones, not gods. Wish phone mfgs would stop leaving out the expandable memory. Wish Google would treat sd like a real memory expansion. All this cloud stuff is for the birds!
Nice to see LG competing. Nice phone!

Nice internals ... to me the back button as i saw it seems atrocious ... the idea is really cool ... the implementation as it seems in the photo is bad for my taste ... i'll stick with gs4 anyway .. i find it pointless to replace phones that early anyway ...
LG G2 is an amazing phone but, I'm gonna wait for the note 3. To be honest I'm disappointed with the amoled screen on s4. My s2 screen was so much more brighter and vibrant.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
im happy with the s4 and LG is known to have crap support and non-existant updates, but the G2 looks like a great phone phone hardware wise and the flip cover idea is what samsung should have done with the s-view cover
if im going to trade my samsung it will definetly be for a Sony

If every time a new high(ish)-end phone was released a thread seeking people's "feelings" toward it was started those threads would cannibalize the front page. In the past few weeks we've seen the XZ Ultra, One Mini, One Max, Moto X, Note 3, S-800 SGS4's, Sony Honami, and a S-800 One+ rumor in addition to the LG G2. I'd guess some percentage of people that own a SGS4 would be interested in some of those phones for various individual reasons. Finding those reasons out becomes more a market research study than a discussion about the specific device whose forum the question is posted on. That's why most mods aren't really keen on comparison threads; no matter what their title says.

+1!!!!
This whole 'in the cloud' thing just doesn't work for me, not at all! That's why I like Samsung, they give us both plenty local and cloud storage, so we can choose. I hate what Google has done with the SD card treatment in Android, one of the main reasons why many of us chose Android was iOS limited us in storage, now Google are doing the same, just look at the Nexus 4, 16GB the highest you get, pretty pathetic really.
Keeping my s4. Lg twice. lg never again.
Crappy support, updates what is that. And whit one lg i had hardware issus so 3 times send it in to repair, the same lg did to 3 of my frinds.

Finding a case will be fun for the G2 i'd imagine
Thread closed, I fail to see what the LG G2 has to do with the Galaxy S 4.
