Surface Pro 1 vs Note 10.1 2014 Edition - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

Wonder what your thoughts on this is?
I have the 2014 edition, but since the surface 1 is on sale, I was thinking of returning it and getting a surface pro 1? The reason being that it is Windows, has active stylus and is a tablet. That way I don't have to use apps to use Microsoft items.
Also, I don't have a laptop. I use my Note 10.1 for school and taking notes (drawing + typing at same time).

I have both and it would really depend on what you want to do with the device. Note taking is much easier on the 10.1, at least how I take notes in meetings. The pro is just not comfortable to hold and take notes. It may be different if you always have a desk to take notes on. The 10.1 does not compare with productivity in a business setting, the pro owns that category (it should it is an ultrabook in tablet form factor). Remember office is not free with the pro like it is on the RT, so you have to factor that in to your cost.
The other issue with the pro is the battery life, if I am easy on the device I can get around 4.5-5hrs without having to plug it in. The 10.1 lasts an entire day with ease.

I concur with the above. I have both and find myself favoring the note almost exclusively. Comparatively, the surface is heavy and thick, not to mention that it gets pretty hot. The only use case that I even consider for the surface is with the full tactile keyboard kickstanded on a work surface... Which at that rate, just get an ultrabook, maybe one you can install windows 7 on.

I have the Dell Venue 11 5130 with battery keyboard. Best overall device that I have owned. I like my Note 2014 a lot and ditto for the 5130.
I would choose the Note over my iPad 4, but the 5130 actually has over 50% better battery life than either tablet due to the keyboard battery. Best wifi range of any other device I have tested as well.
If just one device period besides a phone, I would choose the 5130 due to versatility. Runs x86 apps and MS store apps fine with no fan and does not get hot.

OPINION: Galaxy Note 10.1 AND Galaxy Note?

Just got a Galaxy SIII as an upgrade and sold it on Amazon (only online for 30 mins) so I've got £450 sitting in the bank waiting for the Galaxy Note 10.1 to ship.
Do I keep my "Baby" note as a phone and run it alongside the 10.1 or downgrade to a Nexus S or similar?
The Note 10.1 has both the features I value most on the baby Note: S-Pen and big screen.
What would you do?
I plan on getting the note 10 next to the note 5
I think that both Notes are different devices. Having both beats the purpose. The original Note fits both phone and tablet worlds. The new 10" Note will not work as good as a phone.
In other words, both devices are for different market niches.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
I'm planning on having both as I use it heavily for work, especially note taking. I will probably use the 10" one in the Office and the 5" for when I travel to different locations.
Any idea when Sammy are going to release the damn thing?

If you have a pc / laptop in the office you won't need a tablet, just my opinion.
Ok, i have a 10" tablet (before the note came) and i have a note. I take a lot of notes and work with plenty of docs. I must say that when i'm on the move i use my note for everything but when i'm at work or home i use my laptop. No need for a tablet... Untill now the tablet is "resting" in the hands of my wife and daughter since i don't need it for now.
Just to make life simpler: when i'm working at home or work i have my note plugged in and use the things i wrote before. No problems here.
Hope that it helps you in making a decision, 450$ in the bank is always welcome for a rainy day..........

That maybe true for some, I tend to make a lot of handwritten notes as I feel more comfortable this way. The note taking is just one of my main uses however, when I am at home I like to use a tablet for browsing etc especially when lying in bed, it's more comfortable than using a laptop and the battery lasts a lot longer.
I also read a lot of PDF documents that I annotate, for this I would prefer the larger display and the s pen. I am currently using the Asus transformer for this but a friend of mine will be buying this off me when I get the 10.1 note so hopefully won't be paying the full whack for it.
The attraction for me is all that space to write notes and see a page full at a glance without scrolling around. I've been using Lecture Notes for a week or so and it's perfect for my needs if only the screen were bigger. I wouldn't type on a laptop in a customer meeting as it would be inappropriate but writing on a screen is unobtrusive and feels natural.

Having purchased 7 different tablets and 3 different phones in the last year, I can say that the note is the perfect device. I do still have a 10 inch tablet but rarely use it now.
The note is a great phone and a great everyday tablet. I tried lugging around a 7 inch tablet, but the reality is that it is still too cumbersome.
You should find a tablet you like and stick with the note imo.
You won't find a device this portable and powerful.
The only other device that makes sense is the padfone.
Good luck.

Both. I love my current Note as a phone.
I often use my Tab 10.1 when I want a tablet - the Note 10.1 is the first device with the potential for making me want to ditch it.
Is a separate cell necessary?
Would it be possible to use a bluetooth-enabled headset with the Note 10.1 to make calls? In other words, do you really have to have a separate cell device? Does any major carrier support cell service on a pad?
I know the Note 10.1 isn't near as portable as a cell phone, but, I rarely go anywhere without a bag, and I really like the idea of having a device like the note easily available. It seems a bit redundant to have both the pad and the phone (especially for the cost).

Can't imagine carrying a 10" tablet everywhere. The idea of the Asus Padfone sounds good but it seems from recent reviews that it's not that good in it's initial offering.

You should see my kids. They carry their laptops everywhere they go.
The Note 10.1 is going to be absolutely brilliant with the pen. Even the 5.3 Note is not bad and some of the new feature like Formula Match are really nifty. Imagine all that on a 10.1 device. I hope Samsung pushes the software hard and makes paid versions of their S-Memo and S-Note apps with more features while still keeping pre-installed free versions. I think there is a huge potential for domain-specific apps with pen-support for maths, photo-editing, diagrams etc.
Despite all this I will probably hold out for Windows 8 convertible tablets. What I really want is something like the Samsung Hybrid, recently announced at Computex, which works as a regular Windows laptop and also a removable tablet with pen support. This could be the machine I have been dreaming about for years.
Depends on your needs. I hate carrying two devices with me so my Note is a phone and a tablet for me. But if you have no problem with carrying 10" device with you, then get a smaller phone, you probably won't need 5,3" screen when you have 10" one right beside.
You shoud be able to do this as long as Note 10.1 enables this function, it's not related to the carrier. Take the HTC Flyer as an example, HTC seals its function as a phone, but developers bring this function back in the custom ROM.

I would probably switch the baby note for an S3, the main reason i got the note was to be able to read ebooks on confortable screen, having 10.1 would cover that aspect, so i could get back to using my smartphone confortably with only one hand
I'm going to wait for the Windows 8 Tablets. Samsung already do the Slate, but with Win 7.
Something similar, but lower cost and maybe 10.1 inch would suite me. Having Office etc. make it better for work and I still have Note for when on the move.
It does depend on how good and how expensive the Windows 8 Tablets are, when they start coming out...

I think a win8 pro tablet with stylus and Onenote is simply too much for the note 10.1, and the possibility of launching desktop programs like ansys and catia is a deal breaker for me ( engineer student)

A bit premature, don't you think?
While the Surface does present an impressive array of features, I reserve final judgement until I see the price.

Do you still need a tablet?

With the Galaxy Note, do you still find yourself neediny a tablet? What devices are you presently using on a daily basis?
I currently use my 5.3 inch Galaxy Note as a phone/tablet but find myself using my 15 inch laptop more merely to save battery life.
I am looking into an Asus Transformer to replace my laptop. The one here looks good...

Alternatively, I could simply buy a Mugen extended battery. It would add some heft but then I would have the battery life of a tablet device - something I find the Note lacks.
So, what doo you think I should do? Buy a larger battery for my Galaxy Note or save up the extra and get that Asus above? Also, I again ask you what devices you find yourself using on a daily basis now you own your Galaxy Note?

The Asus is the best tablet for me, as the keyboard dock would allow me to do my homework on it, and I would want a 10 inch tab if any. 7 inches is not enoughof a step up, in mu opinion, from any high-end smartphone nowadays that has a 4.5+ inch screen. The size difference between the Nexus 7 and Note is especially minimal.
Buying an extended Mugen will costs me almost a hundred dollars - more eveb perhaps thanks to VAT here in the UK . But it will offer me one perfect device and I would then only need a laptop for homework. Also, I couldn't afford two data plans and my unlimited 3 mobile plan does not alow tethering, unless there is a way around thia that anyone knows of?

Of course, the Asus Transformer Pad 300 has some pretty good specifications compared to other tabs and - unlike the Note - it can run tablet apps. The keyboard dock also looks useful. So, what do you all recommend?

I still use my original Transformer quite a lot. I've got the keyboard dock but use it less than I thought I would although I usually pair it up when not in use as it charges the tablet up brilliantly. I am looking to sell it (if anyone is interested) as I want a Note 10.1.
I'm too lazy to even go get my tablet from across the room and turn it on. My phone is always with me an arm reach away. It's so much easier and quicker, and my hand/wrist doesn't get tired from holding that heavy tablet. If I want to watch movies, I have a TV hooked up to my PC for that, with real speakers. I only have a One X right now, but that 4.7" is enough to make me semi-forget about my tablet. What will the 5.3" note that I ordered do?
Lol you know the funny thing is, I don't consider myself to have big hands. I guess my fingers or long, but I don't see it that way. Holding the One X, I have to sort of claw it since it's thin and angular on the side, sloping towards the screen. The Galaxy S III is probably wide enough, but lacks the thickness for comfortable grip too. The note I tried out at the store just engulfs my hand and I can grip it perfectly. It fits so well. I dunno about my pockets... I had a 7" nook color and could manage holding it at the latter half of my fingers without too much trouble. Too bad it doesn't fit in a pocket!
Used my missus iPad a few times to get her out of a pickle when the apps, need killing or updating, other than that I leave it to her, she loves it, it is big compared to my note, but then it is handy for showing friends family photos.

Thanks for all of your responses. As I said, it is a toss up between purchasing either an extended Mugen battery or an Asus Transformer Pad 300 and I'd like to hear what you all think I should purchase. Buying a Transformer would give me more screen real-estate, safe my phone's battery some heavy usage, a truly portable computer-like device and the keyboard would mean I wouldn't need to turn my laptop on to do my homework. However, buying a Mugen battery offers me a sole device capable of almost all my daily technological usage and I'd only have to switch to a laptop for some homework or if I wanted to do some light PC gaming (my laptop can't handle many games naturally).

Well, 10 inches is almost double the size of the Note, so it is a much larger size. I initially wanted a new laptop, as my current one is failing to run the games I recently purchased on the Steam summer sales. But, seeing as we have a main family computer capable of running these, I've begun to think about purchasing a 10 inch tab. The Transformer Pad 300 seems to offer me the functionality of a keyboard for homework at home, but I can take it off and simply carry the tab when I want to do some viewing in bed for example.

I disagree slightly here.
I have a Transformer Prime, a Nexus 7, and a Note.
The Prime is largely unused unless I am going somewhere where there is WiFi and I think that I may need to look at some work related issues - I don't care what anyone says, the Prime can serve quite well as an impromptu Netbook for the most part. It is seldom undocked these days though, and this is especially true now I have the Nexus 7 too.
Prior to getting the Nexus 7, I would mostly use my Note at home, but now I find myself reaching for my Nexus 7 more and more often - whilst 1.7" may not seem like much it makes a world of difference when reading books or comics. I had an original Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I've always been a fan of the 7" form factor.
My Note is still my primary media consumption device though, and if I could only keep one I would keep the Note, not just because it's also a phone (which I would require anyway) but because it can do everything the other devices can and more, even if sometimes it is slightly less convenient. Yesterday, whilst at the gym, I had an urgent call from work regarding something that required my attention, and I used Splashtop on the Note to connect to my PC at home in order to make some coding changes - it would've been a lot easier on the Prime, but given I was on an exercise bike at the time, that wasn't an option!
Regards,
Dave
I see two options really...
Purchase an extended Mugen battery for my Galaxy Note, which will allow me to use the device fairly comfortably as a tablet with around 9 hours of screen time. The problem with this is that the battery turns the Note into a literal brick and, unless I purchased a wireless headset, I doubt I'd be able to comfortably make calls in public (not that I make calls at all on my phone really as I mainly just text). However, having one sole device that is still portable and offers me almost everything I need to do technologically - except homework- has some real appeal.
Purchase an Asus Transformer Pad 300, which will allow me to spare my Galaxy Note some heavy usage throughout the day and, consequently, have a longer lasting battery life. The keyboard will allow me to almost replace my laptop, as the device comes with Polaris Office installed for free. The larger screen would make my hours of YouTube browsing much more comfortable also. However, this option is much more expensive.

Thanks, but to me 7 inches is not enough of an increase - having personally seen my relative who lives with me's Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 also lacks a Micro-SD/SD card slot, which is something I'd have to have in a tablet or any mobile device personally.

Yes, but 5" is still kind of small to use every day!
I used to use my Galaxy note as tablet using Paranoid rom. Due to dpi (213), my eyes was easy to get tired and decided to move back to samsung rom with original setting and now everything seems fine even though I sometimes miss tablet interface.
Now I am using new ipad as tablet and I am very happy now. Bigger screen and feel like I am reading text on paper. I do also have a logitech unltrathin keyboard and I can use it as bluetooth keyboard and front cover as well. It is much sharper than galaxy note screen. I am planning to have a data share plan so I can use my new ipad as LTE tablet !
It is all about preference but I do prefer to have a tablet separately due to size of screen and comport for my eyes.
Hope you can find this useful

There is good Android tablet hardware, but tablet software...not so much. However, with the popularity of the Nexus 7, I suspect that will soon change as developers will produce tablet apps.

Galaxy Note 10.1 Impressions and Weighing against Windows 8

I have had the Galaxy Note 10.1 since August 13th, so more than a month now and I have to say it's one of the best tablets I have ever owned.
Here are my impressions with some minor cons that need to be ironed out:
1) Amazing Screen, approaching Super AMOLED Plus levels (I owned a galaxy tab 7.7 that I sold to buy this one).
Minor Con: It does appear pixelated, especially the home screen folders and apps.
2) Amazing battery life (I have seen screen-on times upto 11.5 hrs and even with wi-fi always on and pulling in email from 4 accounts, it doesn't seem to consume any battery at all when the screen is turned off)
Minor Con: After an update pushed by Samsung it affected battery life slightly, although I am still getting 10 hrs of screen-on time with a lot of web browsing, videos, sometimes both at the same time using pop-up play.
3) Multi-tasking is powerful. Loving the ability to read a PDF/PPT and take notes in S Notes
Minor Con: S-Notes auto brightness increase after the latest update is killing my retina and is seriously annoying. Also, that giant scrolling/panning page makes S-Notes unusable in split screen mode. Hope these issues are addressed promptly through an update.
4) Brilliant S-Pen: I don't use notepads anymore. Seriously. I take notes everywhere, in meetings, jot down ideas, practice sketching. It has made me more productive in general. Coupled with its light weight and long battery life it's a god send. I will never buy any mobile computing device that doesn't have a Wacom pen functionality ever again. Once galaxy note 2 comes out on verizon I am replacing my galaxy nexus on launch day.
Here is the fly in the ointment though. Windows 8 is coming. And for anyone who has ever tried OneNote with a Wacom pen, knows its just unparalleled in terms of inking and makes S-Note, as powerful as it is, look like a hack job. Since Microsoft has had a long time to perfect it, they have taken it to another level that's just hard to touch for any new entrants.
Also, Windows OS will allow me to run my office software (I plan to get the x86 versions and have no interest in the RT version) and do programming (I write software as a hobby) while giving me much of the same multimedia functionality as Android OS. Granted Windows 8 won't nearly have as many apps or games as Android, but it has most of the essential things that I use and need from the get-go.
Currently, I am leaning towards the Samsung ATIV Smart PC as it will have S-Note also (apart from OneNote), so I can port all the notes that I have created on my galaxy note 10.1 to it, although it doesn't look as sleek as the Asus Vivo Tab.
What will I be sacrificing if I get a Windows 8 based convertible tablet like Samsung ATIV Smart PC or Asus Vivo Tab?
Cost is definitely a factor, but the productivity gain offsets that. What else?
Battery life: Not so much with Intel second generation Atom (both devices are rated for 13.5 hrs of battery life, 10 hrs of video)
GPU prowess: Galaxy Note 10.1 will definitely trump integrated Intel HD whatever in the Windows 8 devices. So if playing games are important, note 10.1 is a better choice.
Apps: Android OS has far more number of apps. Not much of an issue if you just want productivity apps, but fun apps are lacking in the Windows 8 store as of now. It might change when it actually releases, but it will definitely take some time to come up to parity.
Anything else?
Discussed ad nauseam here…

Bottom line is that until they’re in people’s hands all debate is rhetorical. And from early pricing reports, especially for non-RT devices, they better be good.

Galaxy Note Pro 12.2

Just read this article. When do you expect the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 be available on sale? I am considering to buy the Galaxy 10.1 2014 this month but if the Pro will be available in two months, perhaps I should wait.

As much as they sell the 10.1 for I'm thinking the 12.2 will cost more than any android tablet should ever sell for.

I'm sure it will be gorgeous, but at 12.2" aren't we moving into laptop territory? I think if I'm going to carry around something that big, it might has well have a real keyboard of sorts, like a 11" macbook air.
I thought I would want this, but using the 10.1 2014 edition, I can't possibly have anything else. It's the perfect size.
Yeah, you also have to wonder what the battery life will be like. I don't think I would gain anything from a 12" tablet that isn't running Windows. Also, it better have some kind of quick charge going on. Charge time on the 2014 is brutal.
Steve
From the info posted on the web, it seems that while the battery is larger (for the larger display), the CPU and RAM are the same as the 10.1 2014. Could this mean there might be more lag? Why doesn't Samsung allow us to change the battery like the Note 1-3?
While samsung don't make 4:3 ratio tablet at all, 12.2 or 13.3 tablet may be better.

Screen size is larger but resolution is the same so it wouldn't make a difference as far as lag is concerned, that's only rumoured spec anyhow.
Theres going to be four new tablets from samsung all rumoured to be out before March at the latest, with the 12.2 being one of the first released.
In that case, perhaps I should hold the purchase for the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and upgrade my Note 2 to Note 3.

Good point. I'd rather see a 4:3 10" Android-powered tablet than a 12.2 or a 12.3 that is 16:10 or (eww) 16:9. It is frustrating that the only decent 4:3 tablet is the iPad (although HP did just come out with the HP Slate Pro 8, but the specs on that are pretty weak).
So if they Samsung is releasing a 12.2'' Note , the prices for Note 10.1 might come down aswell, if so i will just return mine and wait. _P

Highly doubtful. More likely is the price of the 12.2 will be noticeably higher. I use my 10.1 for entertainment when traveling and to get light productivity work done so I don't have to schlep my notebook with me all the time. At least to me, 12.2" is just way too big and defeats the portability benefit of a tablet. You've got to give Samsung credit though for leaving no niche unexploited.

I agree, it'll most likely be more expensive, might as well buy a laptop or surface pro and be more productive.
I want one of these just because it's bigger, but there are just too many drawbacks. With the increase in screen size (which is substantial), there is a significant increase in weight and price with a drop in ppi
It's rumored to be 750g, which is actually only 3 oz heavier than an iPad 4, which actually isn't that bad considering the size.
I use my Note 10.1 while travelling. I take notes at clients sites, and I use t for reading and gaming in the airports. Even the 10" can get a little heavy for holding when reading, so I don't think I would want the additional weight of a larger tablet. For travellers weight is the enemy. I like a decent sized screen, but I have to balance that with weight.
A couple months ago I would have also gravitated toward the 12 - inch tablet. However, seeing the lower sales numbers for this device, due to the high price and how it has suppressed the development of custom ROMs, I have changed my perspective.
Thanks to Scott for Clean ROM, and finally breaking the log jam.
I cannot imagine the weight difference being noticeable in the long run, if you get the big dog.

What's funny is the 7-8" crowd thinks we're all nuts for having a 10" tablet. Different strokes.

I'm sure it will be gorgeous, but at 12.2" aren't we moving into laptop territory? I think if I'm going to carry around something that big, it might has well have a real keyboard of sorts, like a 11" macbook air.

My exact thoughts.
Sent from my freekin huge Note 10.1 ?
I own the Nexus 10 (same screen size and resolution of SGN 10.1 2014) and an HP TM2 12.2 hybrid tablet/notebook. The HP can be used either as a tablet with pen or by rotating the screen it can be used as a touch notebook. Comparing the 10.1" screen to the 12.2" screen; the 12.2" is significantly larger. I use my tablet for web browsing and while the 10.1" does a nice job, the 12.2 is much less fatiguing to use. You wouldn't realize this unless you could switch from one to the other and directly compare them. But since the Nexus 10 is much more convenient to handle, it is my go to tablet right now.
I'm definitely going to pickup the PRO when it is introduced and compare it directly to the Nexus 10 for daily use. I will either go with the PRO or the SGN 10.1 2014. Because of the pretty drastic difference in size, I think it will not take long to develop a clear preference in actual use. The PRO may be to big ... or maybe not.
Many people felt the SG Note was too big to be used as a phone, but I have really enjoyed my Note 2 and now my Note 3. When I switch to smaller phones they seem seriously inconvenient to use.

Replacement question

If you were going to replace your 8, what would you get and why? I ask because I am very disappointed with the 3 whole hours battery time I am now getting and looking to find something better.
I'd probably get the Shield tablet even though the stylus isn't nearly as good. The Shield tablet has pure Android, lots of gaming features (I play plenty of games on my Note 8), SD card slot, front facing speakers, and decent first party accessories. Those things are important to me on a tablet, and I think that's the one I'd get if I was to replace my Note 8.
A Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Because I prefer windows as OS

Funny. I got my girlfriend a Note 10.1 which she uses to draw commissions and requests. She has found herself using the tablet only for drawing and her laptop only for browsing internet. So I suggested she get a surface pro or a similar windows 8 tablet with the stylus option. My only issue with the surface is that it is pricey but it does aim to eliminate the need of both a laptop and a tablet .
I know I will eventually want to replace the Note 8.0 and I almost did with an Asus Windows 8.1 Transformer tablet but I hesitated due to my history with my android transformer tablet being reaaaaallyyyy bad. Also, I prefer to have a full sized laptop on the go when I'm not near my desktop so I will probably keep the android tablet on me and bring a full laptop whenever I need to use one.
So what I'm trying to say is that if I were to upgrade my Note, I'd probably go with a Shield or another android tablet.
Black, if thats the case why not get the new think pad helix 2. Basically it's a surface pro 3 but done right. Something to think about.
Is nvidia shield tablet worth considering?

If anyone coming from a Galaxy Note 8 to a nvidia shield tablet could share its experience... I'd like to know about the pen. I mainly use MyScript stylus keyboard for taking notes. I'm considering the shield tablet 32g/LTE to replace both phone and note 8.0.
Regards
I'd want hands on, but I'd probably consider the LTE Shield or an LTE Note 10.1.
I am in the same boat. I really had high hopes for the Nexus nine to be the best tablet and have a good price but that obviously didn't happen
Good answers. I've been looking around and, frankly, can't find anything as good as the 8. And, of course, it's discontinued, so once mine is shot I'll need to go through this again. I like the stylus, the size is just right, fast, good screen quality, and (now that I have replaced the battery) good life on a charge. I carry mine in the small of my back (lots of things fit there!) so a 10-inch is out. I know something bigger-better-faster-red will come out in the future but, for now, I think I'll stick with my 8. Thanks for the perspective, folks! If you find something comparable, let me know!
I would'be gotten a venue pro 8.0 but could not pass up $200 new for the GT-N5110 over a year ago.
right now the Galaxy S note seems to be a good replacement.

That would be awesome! Do you have a source for that?
