[Q] troubleshooting. rooting nexus 4 with a broken volume rocker - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys ! I wanted to know if you had any ideas or solutions for my issue. I had previously rooted my Nexus and I wanted to flash a new ROM. I downloaded clockwork recovery touch and I downloaded the ROM I wanted, plus the gapps. When I went to flash the new ROM the gapps zip wasn't installed. When the phone booted I tried to download a play store apk but it wouldn't open. When I tried to go back to stock my phone was caught in a bootloop. I managed to get it back to stock but I don't know how to root it again without my power button. Any help would be appreciated

So you can't get into the bootloader and recovery? That's going to be a problem

Exactly how is the volume rocker broken? Snapped in two or what?

You can use adb commands when phone is booted to put it in fastboot, then flash a touch recovery. Bear in mind if you ever softbrick your phone you're gonna struggle to restore it.

No Market

Just tried to flash a rom and the phone rebooted and when it came back I have no market at all. I press on the market icon and I get a note saying to send a message and report it. I am freaking out.

Did you flash a gapps (Google apps) package?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yeah, you need to flash a Google Apps zip. Roms don't come with them, or well, some do, but technically that isn't legal and Google doesn't like it.
did you do a nandroid?
And here, not sure how these work on a non cm7 rom, but you can give it a go.
http://goo-inside.me/google-apps/
The universal dpi for cm7 might work. You would probably need to wipe your phone
cm6 hdpi might be your best bet
I did a back up and my rom never flashed due to the new recovery I used on rom manager. My original rom (stock with root obviously) came back with al my google apps but the market. I DL the market thru my browser but my phone will not allow the download. Tried going into recovery but the new recovery I dl thru rom manager will not allow me to use my back up or the other roms I have on my sd card. When I go into recovery I get the triangle and the little guy, I hit the power button and volume up and go into this weird looking recovery that doesn't allow what I need.
Help me I'm screwed I think. I think the new recovery I dl screwed me all up.
Vinny
Put the old recovery on it then, and restore your nandroid.
If you ended up with stock, you may have lost your root. So root again and install the recovery that you made the nandroid with.

I'm a bit confused.
It looks like you're using the stock recovery. Somehow you corrupted flashing a recovery.
You're far from screwed. If you can flash clockwork 3.0 from ROM manager. If that doesn't work, try this.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
I would advise using clockwork, as it has tight integration with ROM manager. Here's the download for that.

IF you lost root, you're going to have to go through a lengthy process. Let me know if you need help.

[Q] can't clockwork CWR after odin

Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy s t-mobile)
rooted, ran a version of Trigger for awhile. Tried a MIUI rom yesterday. it barely worked for me. Had to ODIN back to stock. (Thanks XDA gang for helping me figure that one out). Anyway, back to stock. Re-rooted but cannot get clockwork recovery to flash. I try using ROM manager but when I go into recovery it is stock samsung recovery.
FYI, I also tried the second update.zip that is suppose to flash CWR option from NOOB GUIDE.. No luck
Help appreciated, I am a noob but I did make it this far w/o asking for help.
thanks in advance.
Did you reinstall packages 2 times in a row?.....that's generally how it works
re-install packages with odin twice? No I did not. I'll try it. Can you explain why to me? Seems like a strange fix.
Thanks for the help.
No not from Odin.... hold the volume rocker down turn power on get into recovery thru phone
Once you have your phone in blue recovery reinstall packages 2 times in a row then you will be in green recovery(cwr). Then flash whatever Rom you wish
Worked! Thnx.
Your welcome.

You also need to install the Google Apps package.
That won't help. It is not required to install for a working ROM. You only need Gapps if you want the Google apps like the play store. It sounds like a bad flash or a bad download. Try to reflash through recovery, if that doesn't work, boot into recovery and mount your tablet. I don't know what recovery you are on, so i can't give you info on how to do that.

I don't use CyanogenMod but sometimes flashing a patch is also need afterwards. Nonetheless, before continuing with experimenting different ROMs, it would be wise to flash back to stock then make a Nandroid backup on your device, one on your PC and one in the cloud. Installing MultiRom is also highly recommended.
My guess is that someone didn't factory reset in recovery before flashing.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Manually boot into recovery by holding power and volume up and volume down at same time. Then when you see the around laying down select recovery with volume key. Try restoring a backup or flashing another rom in recovery.

[Q] Baffled, Confused, Stuck... sniffing KitKats

Hello guys
For some reason I decided to test out the CM and Slim 4.4 roms, but did not see that there were issues flashing with TWRP... so flashing failed with both these ROMS. I did not read the ops on Slim and did not see any warning about TWRP on the CM, so began wiping stuff to try make the flash happen, eventually wiped too much, and now I cannot boot the tablet. Worse is I have also wiped the zip files from the tablet so now I have PhilZ Touch CMW recovery but nothing to flash and this Recovery does not suppot OTG memory, so I have nothing to flash.
SO, tried my full version of Nexus 10 Toolkit to sideload the zip, but Toolkit never gets past "Toolkit Waiting for ADB mode".
I don't know the manual commands to try flash one of these roms, but at this point, I would be happy to just go back to stock, and cant figure how to get to Download mode, there is no home button on an N10.
It seems my safest bet, if possible, would be to get to download and flash a rom there.
Any ideas, much appreciated,
Mark.

From recovery power down your tablet and get into fastboot by holding volume buttons and power buttons at the same time. If this works then you'll be fine because from there you can get back to stock. Download wugfreshs nexus toolkit. Use the option to return to stock and check the one that says stuck in bootloop but can access fastboot (or something like that) then plug your tablet in while its in fastboot mode and go through the steps. It'll have to download stock factory image unless you already have it and browse to it but the toolkit will do everything and get your tablet working again. Don't worry too much its usually not as bad as it seems. The same thing happened to me and I panicked and it turned out to be an easy fix. If you need any more help or more detail on what to do just ask

Thanks Abdel, that worked fine... though I did spend about an hour on Wugfresh last night, it kept on starting to do stuff, then got to recovery mode and it stopped with wufgresh saying waiting for device or something... maybe shutting computer helped too... anyway, thanks for the advice, somehow it worked!
Cheers

[Q] Stuck on LG logo

I recently purchased a lg g2, the korean variant f320s, it was running kitkat with a lot of bloatware on top. I successfully rooted the phone and after that i found a cwm recovery installer for this version of the phone and i hooked up the phone and ran the installer on my pc, it finished installing and the phone rebooted into the custom recovery which was in chinese i went into a menu option and then pressed the back button on the screen and the phone instantly rebooted and got stuck at lg boot logo. Is there anyway to fix this? i have tried wiping cache, dalvik and factory reset from the recovery that i can access(chinese or something) but to no avail. I can access the download mode but my pc does'nt recognize the phone and this step is crucial for i guess installing the stock rom through lg flash tools. The phone however is recognized when im in recovery and i plug it in but it only shows as a drive that is faded out and entering it shows nothing. please help me i just got it two days ago
Have you tried to use adb to sideload a rom?

Yeah you just need to flash a different rom through the sd card i tried cloudy rom but it didnt work then a i tried Lamhoang rom and it did the trick im on jellybean now though and i'll try flashing something else in a month or so
ALL FIXED
You are a legend!! Device back up and running.
Okay so I installed that same rom you did but the home/back/menu buttons weren't working so not wanting to muck around, I did some quick searching (which I should have done before >.<) and worked out how to get the Cloudy roms working on a korean device.
You need "Philz cloudy f320 recovery", the kitkat baseband and the rom. LINK
1 - Install the new recovery from zip and then boot back into recovery after this. You will now be greeted with philz recovery which is awesome.
2 - From here, proceed to install the rom as noted on the rom page.
This process worked for me for the Cloudy G3 V1.3 rom.
Thanks a lot for your help!! happy to return the favour! But i am hoping the above info already does that. :victory:

Good to know you got it working again i still cant figure out why this problem occurred in the first place why did the phone brick from the recovery when the recovery was working fiblne after? Also i can just get the new recovery over the one already on the phone without removing the previous one right? Thanks for the info im gonna try out the cloudy roms soon
I have no idea.. something to do with that chinese recovery I am guessing.. There are still a few issues I am going to address but for now my phone is 95% working.
The only issue is that if I try go into download mode, it still doesn't go to the second screen (All i get is the small blue dots). Bit of a pain because that's something nice to fall back on if you ever need to.
I'll search around and try and figure these out in the next week or two, but I am happy with what I have for the moment.
Yep, you literally install the new recovery over your current one and then you can restart phone back into your rom and then reboot back into recovery using an app or the button method.
