I had no problem using QBKing77's guide to root my S3. I looked for the comparable thread when I got my S4.
I loaded up Odin but got an error saying there was no PIT partition. I put the phone into debug mode (not in the instructions?) and it seemed to work.
But then it failed half-way through. I was plugged into a USB port on the front of the computer.
Now I get the error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
I searched and found other threads for the S3 and other phones but would appreciate some help with the S4. Thanks.
Edit: are these the steps I need to take?
Edit #2: Uh, I guess those steps won't work since they will prompt me for a serial number and there doesn't seem to be a way to get that from a Galaxy S4 if it won't boot.
Help?
Does the phone boot into download mode? Have you tried flashing the stock firmware through ODIN?

When it boots, it goes straight to the error. If I hold volume down + Home, it *will* go into download mode.
I didn't know what to flash with ODIN.
After the fiasco with the attempted rooting, I didn't want to chance flashing the wrong thing.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Can someone post step-by-step directions on how to flash stock firmware through Odin? (Or the link to the thread that probably already exists)
Preferably with a link to the exact ROM/firmware that I need?

Look for CF-Auto-Root for jfltespr. That will get you rooted but will trip your Knox counter.

I have this file already downloaded: CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720
I started Odin 3.07 ("Run as administrator") and loaded the file in the PDA slot. I waited for "<OSM> Leave CS.." to appear in the "Message" box. I hooked up the Galaxy S4 but the COM port will not show up... trying different cables now... (it is plugged into the back of the computer...)

That's it. Make sure it's the current one and flash in PDA slot using Odin.
Will reboot, apply root, reboot back to stock and voila!

I can't get ODIN to recognize the S4 via the USB slot ("ID:COM" port stays blank). I even re-installed the S4 drivers. Any ideas?
I've tried 3 different cables, all plugged into the back.

Not a silly question at all. I've been known to do that
But no, this time I was in "download mode". For some reason, it finally worked with one of the cables using a front USB port. (?)
Thanks for everyone's help. Crisis averted.

I've had dicey situations using download mode just like you've described on 2 different gs4's. I use heimdall, not odin, but same flakey results. The gs4's download mode appears to be very finicky about the quality of the usb cable and port. I never had any issue with download mode with identical hardware when I used to flash my gs2. So it's not you, it's the gs4. I finally got some reasonably reliable and consistent flashing results by using the usb ports on the back, and a high quality blackberry usb cable. In my case, the "bad" ports on the front are usb1.1, while the ports on the back are usb 2.0. So it seems to matter when flashing the gs4. So I would say avoid using usb 1.1 ports if your computer is old enough to have them.
Hello,
I have really big problems with my I9500 basically, everything is not working. From the day I got it, I couldnt do anything (reinstalling firmware), now I can REACH recovery mode - finally. But thing is I have no idea what kind of firmware it is installed there, because If I want to instal SuperSU - I can't, towelroot does not root my phone either, when I enter recovery and try to install from SD card newest official firmware I received Installation Aborted. Odin does not work either, Kies - nope. Please, there must be something that could help me to solve this.

No download mode is something completely different.
You should read this thread first.

I tried that too, but it open only factory mode in chinese
you must reinstall a stock rom with odin.
For this you need to access Download mode by pressing the down+home+power buttons.

Can ROM somehow cause problems with USB recognising of my SGS4 I9505 ?
Charging is fine, but can't be recognized by PC.
Shall i try this damaged SGS4 with other ROMs flashing with custom recovery and SD card, or it can only be hardware problem, so no need to try other ROMS ?
My question is simple and i need simple answer (like yes or no). I won't explain how many threads i've checked- simply i'll tell what i've tried.
1. Dozens of cables
2. Few different laptops with different OS
3. A lot USB ports
4. Cleaning phone USB port
5. Replacing with another 2 USB boards from other SGS4
6. Hard phone cache and factory reset
7. Delete all drivers, reinstall em, also KIES, Error code i receive in device manager is 43. Tried to force Samsung drivers for this device, it accept them, but gives error code 10 - device can not start.
Phone can't be recognized in all modes. Last time it was connecting properly was when i flashed last ROM with Odin. It is STOCK rom. - I9505XXUHOB7_I9505YBTHOB7_DBT-Stock ROM Galaxy s4 and it has received several updates OTA from Samsung.
I have 2 more SGS4 which connects and works fine with all cables. They have never been flashed or rooted.
Shall i try this damaged SGS4 with other ROMs flashing with custom recovery and SD card, or it can only be hardware problem, so no need to try other ROMS ?
THANKS a lot in advance !!!

PLS ! Read 1st post !
Just need to know has ROM anything to do with USB connectivity?
So should i bang my head and search for flashing without custom recovery, root and USB connectivity !? Is there any chances to flash that way another rom, an will it fix usb connectivity ?
If ROM has NOTHING to do with usb connectivity- then i'll just leave it that way! It is simple ! But no simple answer yet

Download mode is separated from the rom. So no, the rom has nothing to do with usb connectivity while in download mode. Another rom will not fix your problems.

Hi everyone, I have a sm-t580 tablet on which I installed twrp and a custom rom, recently I restarted the tablet in twrp and I cleaned all the partitions, I did this by mistakenly restarting the tablet in the operating system via twrp even if there is no there was no rom installed. Once this was done, the tablet restarted in download mode (fastboot), it was a bit in download mode and at that moment I was not there when I returned the tablet had turned off because it had downloaded.
I put the tablet in charge and now I can no longer turn it on even in download mode (fastboot) the screen turns on only when it is charging but in any case I cannot start it in any way in any mode.
Anyone know how I can fix it? Thank you very much who will answer me.
I managed to start it in download mode for a short time, I didn't have time to flash anything and the tablet turned off immediately after.
Maybe it has such a low battery that it cannot start, but since there is no ROM installed it does not even charge.
What can I do?
Ok, I resolve the problem
for future reference download mode is NOT fastboot mode.. theyre two completely different things

Where did you download firmware from?
Which did you take (name it)?
Was it multipart or single part ROM?
(probably single as you only named AP slot)
Which Odin version used?
