SPH-L720 sprint s4 4.4 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Does anyone know of a possible way to root if running the new nae 4.4 update?

Read and search. People have reported thy they have rooted after taking the OTA.

Above post is right. Latest samsung mobile drivers, CF Auto root, done.

I just used CF-autoroot and it worked a dream. I can also confirm that the NAE hotspot mod works beautifully.

Ok, I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2291827
I'm seeing a lot of people having issues, losing wifi, etc., and having to revert to previous updates. Will I have to do that even though I've not rooted yet?

rooted my mk2 2 days ago. and the best flawless way to do it is. push philz recovery thru odin. and flash superuser.zip reboot and your done (i did have to go into the playstore and update super user to get it to work)

If you're not rooted, you should be able to just take the update. IMO, most of the issues are coming from rooted devices that may not have been totally clean (stock rom, stock recovery, total factory reset) when the update was taken. That's not a worry for a stock phone.
If you want to root afterwards, the CF Auto Root is the way to go for sure.

Two ways. Go to the Download screen and see if there's a line for Knox. It will be either 0x0 or 0x1.
The other way is to go to About Device and see if your at 4.3

One thing to keep in mind. If you take the MK2 OTA, some stuff has not been updated for it yet. Like the free wifi hotspot/tether mod.

I have searched, read, searched, read and search and read and there seems to not be a hotspot mod for rooted mk2 stock rom
Regarding Hotspot on MK2, I found this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48516106
And this individual was able to get hotspot working on MK2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48516106&postcount=88
BUT I can't figure out if this person had the OTA 4.3 MJA/Knox Bootloader beforehand or not because I can't post in the dev forum.
I don't even think I'm able to send PM's, I tried to PM him but don't see the message in my sent items folder. If anyone can figure out if rawintellect 's post is accurate, I'll flash my phone immediately, to hell with the Knox bit.
I probably wouldn't keep the stock rom anyway, so I don't think this would affect me.

ive found one root option that seems to work but you cant install a custom recovery.
my phone came with the mk2 update from sprint so is there any way to root it and have a custom recovery? im not worried about tripping knox if that matters. also does the cf-auto root method work with the full mk2 update?

You've probably already found a solution, but this is how I rooted the Sprint MK2 4.3

This worked fine, and I was able to install custom recovery. Just been having and issue getting a proper backup, but everything else worked just fine.
Hope this helps

The method is for Verizon GS4, can you reconfirm that its working for Spring L720 too?
Thanks
I can confirm that it worked for my Sprint MK2 4.3. I should mention that when I started the instal bat and the command prompt screen popped up telling me to hit any key to continue, nothing happened. I "x'd" out of command prompt and started the install bat again and it worked no problem. I have done this a total of 3 times now. All on Sprint MK2 4.3 and all successful. I checked each time with root checker to ensure root access.
I can also confirm that Safe Root tool was able to root my Sprint L720 MK2-based 4.3 Galaxy S4. I had Odin'ed back to stock MK2 days ago. I haven't tried the SafeTrap Recovery yet so I can back-up/install custom ROMs.
can anyone confirm that SafeRoot does not trip KNOX?

Thanks for the confirmation as it assured me enough to go ahead and root... and as confirmation on my end that it worked!!
One question though... as I'm now rooted, it's been mentioned that when you boot the device up you should see a "Custom" banner during boot because things have been changed. On my device I never see this and was wondering if that's the case on yours as well.
I can also confirm that QBKING&&s root method works for mk2 build..so does goomanager for installing twrp and disabling knox. Jut dont try the MJA native hotspot mod...i followed the video to the t and am now stuck in a boot loop

Why would you use the MJA native hotspot mod for a MK2 build? I believe in that same thread they released an MK2 hotspot mod as well, which I have installed successfully as I now have FoxFi WiFi hotspot availability!

This is not 100% accurate. You flash a ROOTED kitkat in SafeStrap and then flash the proper kernels and such in Odin. You are not flashing the full firmware using Odin.

The file you are flashing is 76MB. No Note 3 firmware is 76MB. You are flashing a kernel, modem and bootloader that are not included with the SafeStrap flash.

People have done it successfully, but the OTA only installs if your system files weren't modified at all. I couldn't the OTA to install - probably due to changes I made in Xposed. I'm going down the leak KK route for now.

OTA failed for me as well. I have removed or frozen just about anything Verizon. Waiting for the MD5 firmware from Sammobile to download so I can try to Odin the file

Well, I took the leap.. downloaded the md5 file from sammobile and flashed via Odin.

Does anyone have any tips or what to look for if the update keeps failing?
I had Xposed Framework installed...and I think that's the only thing that I had installed that modifies system files...but I uninstalled it's modifications from within the framework app itself, then unistalled the framework apk, then all of the module apk's, then I disabled SU, but the update still won't take...
Anyone have any ideas without losing all my stuff?

But if I follow this thread:

I just wanted to report back and say everything went great and I am now on NC4 with root! Yay!
Just for the record, in SuperSU I had set SuperSU to DISABLED, then set the Survival Mode to ON, then set default action to DENY. Not sure if that matters, but that's what I had and it worked.
Thanks for the tips everyone!

To clarify, how did you finally get the OTA to take in the first place? I did the same as you - uninstalled Xposed modules and framework, reverted framework-res, disabled SU, unfroze any applications, but OTA failed.
EDIT: Or did you Odin back, then disable SU, then OTA? Just confirming before I do it
Thanks!
If you really want to keep root I would not flash NC4 at all, you're risking the possibility of never getting it back. No one has found any major changes from NC2 to NC4 so you really won't be gaining much but could lose a lot.

Yeah, I hear ya. I generally like to just stay stock+root, though, so staying with the official OTA is generally my preferred route. Might just wait and see what comes out in the next few days.
