So I got this S4 shortly after it came out running 4.2. I flashed CM 10.2 shortly afterwards, and ran that until the first milestone of CM11 was released. I switched to that for about 2 months, but decided I wanted to return to stock this evening.
I followed Qbking77's guide on unrooting to MDC, and all seemed well until I got to the restart stage and the phone started hanging at the yellow Sprint logo until switching to a bootloop. I've since tried reflashing the image multiple times and no dice.
I have a nandroid backup from 1-18-14 that I took after installing CM11. At this point I'd take anything functional, CM or stock.
After flashing mdc in odin just turn off the phone. Boot into stock recovery and do a factory reset. Reboot. Profit.

Maybe I'm confused but... Isn't that when you hold volume up + power? If I understand what I'm doing, I think I'm only able to get download mode and not recovery.

I see.
So I'm tried those on the phone and I can get download mode, but not recovery mode. It will flash with the text in the top left corner, but then go right back into the boot loop like before.

So... I couldn't get recovery mode to work and I assumed that somehow I had erased it.
I went searching for tutorials on how to restore a stock recovery + rom and found an application that acts as an Odin All In One.
I'm not allowed to link yet, but something tells me that the author Rwilco12 is known around here because it's a pretty helpful piece of work he's done. I used the tool and suddenly I was able to boot into recovery per leaderbuilder's instructions.
The good news is: ITS ALIVE!
Thanks everyone for your help!
If you have an SD card and are stuck at the yellow sprint screen take it out and reboot the phone and it'll boot. After that first boot you shouldn't have a problem anymore

It can be a real pain to get the timing right sometimes.

After holding down the volume up and power you can let go of power and hold the volume down. This will make sure it boots into recovery.

If wipe data doesn't work, look for a stock rom compatible with your device and carrier, and flash it using odin.

Friend, I had the same problem like you. The difference is that my phone could connect through Odin. I revive it as showed in my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41195930#post41195930
I dont know if that procedure could help you, but, if yes, I'll be happy to help you!!!
Good luck!

simply go to download mode and flash stock firmware for ur phone using odin
I seem to have bricked my S4.. Here's what I did... I was flashing the KT kernel, and accidentally downloaded the wrong version. After flashing, my phone will do nothing more than sit on a black screen and vibrate every 2 seconds. I used Odin to return to stock, and it completed successfully. It still does nothing more than sit on a black screen and vibrate. Can anyone help? Sorry for the new thread, but I'm desperate. Thanks for any help.
Have you tried using kies?
Pull your battery and wait a few seconds. Reinsert the battery and press the recovery combo (vol up + home + power. Release just the power button when the device vibrates and you see the blue script in the top left corner of the screen). If this gets you into stock recovery, wipe data, cache and reboot.

I've been having the same problem and have tried this method numerous times with no results. The phone simply will not boot into recovery, even after restoring to factory using Odin. It's incredibly frustrating. I'm at my wit's end.
Another person had a very similar problem last night. He was able to use kies to get the phone working. Give that a try.
Edit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45207338
It won't go into recovery at all. I'll be trying to restore with kies tonight, and I'll post results. Thanks guys.

So kies didn't go so well. It will not connect to my phone at all. I've tried in download mode, and it just will not connect. Any other ideas?

I had the same exact problem. Someone told me to rewrite the partition table and flash but I don't know what that means and the person who suggested this failed to elucidate. It's crazy that there's no info on this situation ANYWHERE.
I've been digging, and digging, AND DIGGING, and I haven't found a solution other than JTAG and RIFFBOX. I've read good and bad things. Looks like this phone is now a paperweight. Maybe one day there'll be a not-so-ridiculous solution.
Can someone help me out? I just installed Clean Rom with a dirty flash over OSE Rom. ( I know I should have done it clean). After trying to reboot I got stuck on black screen with this: [810] Fastbootboot mode started
[860] udc_start()
I have TWRP 2.6.3.2 installed as my recovery. I tried pressing power/volume down at same time; takes me back to same screen. Any thing you guys suggest trying?
That happened to me once. I also could not get back into recovery mode. The only option I could think of is to put the phone in download mode and restore the phone to stock. There are threads posted on how to do this

I found an easier way. When powered off hold volume down and power. When you see LG logo release buttons and press them again. when you are in the factory reset screen just press the power button 2 times and it should take you to recovery. This works for me in the T-mobile variant running TWRP.
I wiped system and it took forever in the middle of it it just turned off and now there is no system and no recovery. . Just the lg screen no adb nothing. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I finally got into recovery and fixed it. Rom selection is horrible for this phone as far as sprint goes, I see you said carbon rom I use that on my nexus where is it for the g2?
I am trying to install the leaked soak test of 4.4 and I cannot for the life of me get a stock recovery menu to come up. I've held Power, vol up and vol down and gotten the menu where you can select recovery or AP Fastboot, etc. But when I select recovery all I can ever get is the dead Android. I've tried pumping the power button, the volume up , seperately, together, etc. No dice. Does anyone know any tricks to this? Would it be possible to just install the file with RSDLite? It's making me CRAZY!! Thanks!:cyclops:
Holding volume up and down for around 5-10 seconds using does it for me. You might nerd to pump it, but those two buttons together do it.

I've managed to get into it once, and tried flashing the soak test file. It rebooted and then hung, so I had to go back into the recovery menu which was actually the new 4.4.2 recovery. However, Every time I tried to get it to flash the update from the sdcard again, it said it was complete. When I tried rebooting the system, it just hangs on the "Unlocked Bootloader" screen. SO I started over and I can't even get back to that point. SO FRUSTRATING !! I WILL beat this darn thing into submission... GRRR

From what I can interpret through all the various threads out there, you kind of need to let it install twice. The first install will flash the new KK recovery. Then, you boot into the updated recovery and flash the updated system files. Oh, if you're at the screen with the dead droid, you should be able to hold volume down and tap volume up to get into recovery. Well, that's worked previously, anyway.
Ironically, once I gave up and went back to stock, I received the OTA.

If you hold volume down for around 5 seconds and then while releasing it hit volume up, the menu shows up.
I don't know why they made it so difficult.
