I've been looking for a while for an app, which can lock folders with password, like Folder Guard does on Windows. No luck after many hours of searching, so I thought I'd ask here.
Note that I'm looking for protecting folders with password functionality only. PLEASE do *NOT* suggest apps that:
- Lock apps, files, pictures or videos
- Hide folders or certain types of files
Folder should be visible via any file browser, but access to it should be denied. User would be required to input password to access it. There are *many* similar functionality apps, which do things I marked in red - that's not what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance
If you're rooted why not just change folder permissions? - block all entries, then change the perms back when you need to enter the folder.

Because not only it's very cumbersome, having to do that many times a day back and forth for several folders, but also kind of pointless because anyone who tries to access those folders will be able to add those permissions back, just like I would. The app I'm looking for would require a password for those folders, password to run the app and change settings, and password would also be required for uninstalling it. That's how it's done on other OS.
Good question i too would like to know if there are any folder locking apps out there.

Is there a way to edit the names of the Shortcuts on Home screen with the default Home Launcher? For example, I'd like to change "Dolphin HD Browser" to just "Dolphin". I don't like seeing the names being cut off.
I'm sure the information is around somewhere and I am also guessing the device would need to be rooted to do the job as well. Wish is was as simple as it was on WinMo 6.5 but it probably isn't.
Nope doesn't need root, simply install Folder Organizer, the app ownz by allowing you to put your apps in folders like iOS and also gives you easy way to rename the icons, uninstall the apps, etc

Nice, Thanks for the tip. Installin now...
I use desktop visualizer to rename shortcuts. Plus it's able to set custom icons too. Somewhat similar to folder organizer but it can't organize apps.
All of us at sometime want or need to keep some of our files secret on our phone.
Quite by accident I found a feature in an app called File Expert (download free from Android Market or attached to this post) which allows you to hide files from media detection.
All you need to do once you have installed File Expert is browse to the folder(s) containing the media files you want to hide, press the folder for 2-3 seconds and select the option 'Hide files from media detection', reboot your phone and thats it done! Unhiding is just as simple; just select unhide from the File Expert menu in exactly the same way.
I can confirm that it works on both picure and video files. I haven't tried it on other media so am unable to comment. The only downside is that you can only do it at folder level so I would suggest that if you have a folder with a mixture of both files you want to hide AND be visible, simply create a sub-folder, move the files you want to hide to that and hide it
Hope you find this useful
I use colournote to hide notes if I need to. Audio manager from the market can be used to hide files as well..

Simply create a new file named .nomedia using any file explorer in the folder you want to hide(aka exclude from media scanning)
Use hide it pro to hide files
It appears that people are missing the point of my thread. Let me explain:
People like us who are experienced Android users may well know how to hide files but this doesn't mean others new to the OS do so it was with this in mind that I started the thread.
I just happened to find an alternative use for a program which is recommended on this site for file management and thought I would share my knowledge (which is what I thought was the point of a tips and tricks thread). I use Audio Manager aka Hide it Pro but my thread wasn't intended to be about that or file hiding programs in general it's about File Explorer and how we can use it to hide files and folders if we want to.
I'm not telling people this is what they should use; if people choose to, great, if not then I'm not going to get upset about it. As I said I'm just offering an alternative method of hiding private folders/files using a program that many people are already using and may not know that the option exists - I certainly didn't.
Hope this clears up any confusion and clarifies my reasons for creating this thread

Thats true!
Actually any file or folder with A dot (.) in front of it will be assumed hidden so don't bother about the the naming.
Well, don't forget that anybody can see your file or folders if he selects "show hidden files" in the file explorer.

Hey all.
After installing 4.2 on my N7, I have noticed two things that annoy me.
1. The notification bar as well as the settings bar can be pulled down infinitely, very ugly.
2. In root folder there are several folders that lead to the sdcard: 'sdcard' and the folders 'storage-emulated' and 'storage-sdcard0'. Why is that, and can I get rid of the storage folder?

1. That's not a question, it's an opinion
2. /storage existed before 4.2, /sdcard is a symlink. Don't remove them. Some changes were made to where user data is stored to support multiple users; each user on a device has his or her own set of accounts, apps, system settings, files, and any other user-associated data..

The primary user is like the Admin of the tablet. Every other user is like a standard user. You DON'T want a standard user to be able to access your files.
If you want files to be shared across multiple accounts, there are folders with sdcard\(folders) In here you will see folders like pictures and media. These folders are public and are shared across accounts.
Folders in sdcard\0\(folders). These folders will have the same thing, pictures and media. These folders are unique to the '0' user, which is you. As a primary user you can view all the other folders of other users, but other users CANNOT and SHOULD NOT be able to view your folders.
Like I said, you have public folders and private folders. The public folders are in sdcard\(folders)
The ones in (parenthesis) isn't an actual folder. I'm just stating how there are folders here. So don't look for a folder called "folders". LoL!!
Sorry but in sdcard/ of primary user are folders only can access from primary user. If switch to secondary user sdcard/ is not the same. Can someone help me?

I also want to know how to have common folders sharing between different users but I think your answer is definitely WRONG.
I have Nexus 7 without rooting, users can ONLY access files created by themselves, no matter in the/storage/emulated folder or /sdcard folder. When plug into computer (I am using Windows), the files displayed in Windows are also determined by which user are you currently login in Nexus 7...
I don't see anyway to have a common folder to share media files now...

Bwahahahahahahaaa!! You all are right. Turns out I had the same picture in both accountS. Sorry. I noticed that the primary has folders in mnt\sdcard and in mnt\sdcard\0 but other users only have mnt\sdcard. Or maybe it's only me with mnt\sdcard\0. I feel bad now. Sorry.
My name confusion is coming from mnt\sdcard how and mnt\sdcard\0
It seemed that the 0 folder was unique to the user and the folders in sdcard were shared.
What if you make a folder in system? Will you be able to share then? *goes try*
Has anyone found a solution to this? I would like our vacation photos accessible in both profiles but don't want to waste storage space. Movies would be nice also.
Verizon GN3, updated, stock ROM, not rooted.
I have a 64gb MicroSD card installed, and put a copy of my photography website on it. I find I am unable to figure out a way to open it in Google Chrome.
I used ES File Explorer's FTP function to begin with, to copy files from my website to the card, and this worked beautifully. When I click on the index.html file on the card, the only options offered are HTML viewer and some text editors. Chrome is not an option (Chrome is the default browser for my phone).
If I long-press the file, and select Properties, I can copy the Path for the file, but when I paste this into Chrome's URL bar, it won't open:
Access to the file was denied
"The file at file:///storage/extSdCard/PhotoWebsite/index.html is not readable. It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access"
I have searched quite a bit, and tried various addresses, including localhost, localhost/mnt, etc., etc., but nothing seems to work.
Ultimately I want to have a Bookmark in Chrome where I can view my website offline when necessary, but this seems to be more complex than would appear necessary.
Any help appreciated.
Bump - came off first page without any replies.
Does anybody here know how to get an html file on your MicroSD Card to open in a browser??
Seriously? Is there no way to accomplish what should be a fairly basic task: for a browser to open up an html file???
If you use My Files to navigate to the file and then select it does it not give you options as to how to open it?

And unfortunately, no. My Files is a more basic app than ES File Explorer, and when I locate the file with it, and select it, 2 options are given:
Complete Action Using ES Note Editor or HTML Viewer.
Chrome or other Browser are not provided as an option.
HTML Viewer is apparently a type of minimalist browser, but fails hopelessly as a way to view webpages. No controls, no resize, etc. And I haven't figured out any way to get HTML Viewer to send anything to Chrome or other Browser.
As I said, this is really quite puzzling. It should be a no-brainer for a browser to open an html file, regardless of its location. Hopefully I'm missing something basic, but I've done quite a bit of searching and experimenting, and can't seem to find the trick, or particular syntax, to get this working.
Hmmmm.... Very weird! like you said, you'd think it'd be a simple task. I may play around now, just because LOL

I had run across one or two like that in my searching, but haven't tried them yet. I like to keep my systems as 'clean' as possible, and so my first choice would be to do it natively. It seems a lot of the problems people develop with their phones, lagginess, various quirks, etc., arise from some odd app or two that doesn't play well with others, or which fix some problem, but create others.
But reading the reviews of the app you linked to, it does seem to fill a pretty major gap that is apparently present in the Android OS, so may be worth a shot.
Thanks.
That was the first thing that came up in my search and I agree with keeping the phone "clean". I'll keep looking

Well, I went ahead and installed 'Open in Browser.' It installed without problem, ran it to select my preferred browser (Chrome), but when I try to open the file, with either Chrome or the stock Browser selected, I still encounter that same dang error message.
I even rebooted the phone, just to make sure, but no joy.
I have emailed the author of the app, to see what the deal is, and will post here if he replies.
Is there some type of Verizon 'protection' or 'security' software running by default that could be getting in the way? Any other ideas?
No responses from anyone else. This seems to be a built-in security "feature" of Chrome for Android, which prevents it from loading an HTML file from an External SD Card. I can't figure out any way around it.
I went ahead and copied the files to the GN3's internal memory:
files:///storage/emulated/0/PhotoWebsite
And I am then able to open the files without any difficulty in Chrome. I have kept the "Open in Browser" App, as it does add the option to open HTML files to a Browser directly from a File Manager, which comes in handy.
I have created a Bookmark for the link for ready access to it within Chrome, but weirdly, I have to long-press and select in Open in New Tab to get it to work. A simple tap, like any other Bookmark, doesn't work.
Fortunately, I have a lot of available Internal Memory, but I should be able to put the files on the External SD Card, and be able to open HTML files from it.
I am still interested in a way to do this, if anybody has any suggestions.
Ignore - duplicate entry. The forum seems to have a glitch here - every time I post, it warns me it can't post another within 20 seconds, even though I've only clicked it once.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the .html file can also be opened in desktop programs like MS Word, right? Have you tried any programs like open office or QuickOffice?

Thanks for the reply.
There's nothing wrong with the file itself (nor any of those from my website), so yes, it can be open in other programs (including HTML Viewer in my Note 3). The problem, as I currently understand it, is that Chrome (and the default browser on the GN3 as well) has some type of security provision that prevents it from loading HTML files that are stored on an external SD card.
When I copied all of the files to the GN3's internal memory, a "pseudo" SD Card, they can be opened without any difficulty.
Why it is this way, I have no idea, nor if there is any way of circumventing it.
Hi DLCPhoto,
I see the last post here was December 22, 2013.
Have you come up with any solutions as of yet?
I am having the same experience even at this late date using Android 5.1.1 Lollypop in a Samsung Core Prime
Standing by . . .
Unfortunately, I never figured out a work-around. I just gave up and put the files I wanted on the Device's memory, where they can be readily accessed.
I'm still using that Note 3, and don't know if anything has changed with more recent versions of Android.
Sorry...

I'm pretty sure that's the only way, you did it right. Maybe Samsung won't allow it because it isn't a system app like "My Files ", which does work in the secure folder. I suspect that's it, just like the secure folder will only let you use the Samsung keyboard, not Gboard...because they're not system apps they're not "secure".
This drove me nuts. Surely it's a bug? Took me ages to resolve. You have to hit deny. Then go into Secure Folder and press and hold the app. (Do this for all of them) Hit APP INFO. Go to PERMISSIONS and manually grant access to them all. Then when you go back into the app it will work.
Now, I can't edit any photos in Secure Folder because it wants to grant access to "Photo Editor" but as this seems to be a component rather than a standalone app - you can't "access" it as such to resolve the issue as above.
Is this just on the S8+ because I expected to see many more issues when I was searching for a fix?
The reason is an application is masking your screen. They do it for your own security to avoid other apps to fool you when you accept a permission. However, it is not clever enough to let you know which app is masking your screen to avoid the problem. Normally it happens when you install an application, which leaves a permanent icon or handle on the screen. In my case, I have Fooview which has a permanent handle on the screen. Also an iphone like control center which has a swipe up activated handle. I also installed round edges for Galaxy S7 edge which puts black pixels at the corners and simulates round edges. All cause trouble for secure folder permissions, and in many cases for normal phone apps permissions. With the later one I had a lot of trouble with all phone permissions which was really frustrating. However, they made it more clever later by turning it off automatically when a permission is requested.
In this case you need to turn off the masking apps one by one manually.
I hope it's helpful for other people suffering from this problem.
