I flashed the 4.4 update and everything was working pretty good except that sprint zone was saying that I had a software update available, but it wouldn't let me update. So i tried to ODIN back to MK2 and it is failing every time. What do I have to do to go back to MK2 so that my phone can get the OTA update properly?
I ran into the same problem trying to downgrade after taking the ota. There is a problem with the updated bootloader preventing us from installing anything older. I was pretty much SOL until Unknownforce posted a flashable version of NAE here. I got back up and running by flashing philz recovery, then the NAE modem from here, then flashing the rom from recovery. Until a complete stock NAE tar is released, or someone figures out how to downgrade the bootloader, this is the only way I know how to resolve our situation.
As mentioned you can't go back to an earlier version of android. Example 4.3 to 4.2.2 and now 4.4.2 to 4.3

Thanks for this info. Makes sense, though I haven't read that anywhere else. That would have saved me hours as I've tried to flash the stock firmware.
Perhaps someone can help. I'm rooted on MJA update, 4.3 stock ROM, TWRP recovery. I've been trying to get to a clean MK2 as the OTA didn't work properly (broke wi-fi, etc.). I flashed back to MJA using Odin to regain wi fi.
I've read I will need to go back to stock recovery in order receive OTAs (like 4.4.2 and beyond). I have read, downloaded and read, and read. No luck.
How can I get to NAE? Will i need to get to MK2 first? Perhaps someone can clear up my confusion. I've flashed a good bit on my old Evo 4G, but am new to Odin, though I had no issues rooting or flashing hotspot tar file.
Thanks!
I fixed mine by flashing the MK2 update.zip in recovery. It didn't go back to MK2 but it booted up. When I looked on KIES it said the phone was MK2 but the other two parts were NAE.

In order to take on OTA or install an upgrade zip in recovery, you have to be on the latest version. In your case, MK2. Your easiest option would be to odin the MK2 tar and then either wait for the OTA or download the upgrade zip and install with recovery.

Thanks Cruise 350, for your suggestion. I have downloaded the MK2 zip thinking I might need to use it.
So, if I can get the MK2 tar to "take" in Odin, will it break root? I've tried so many steps in Odin where I read my actions would break root, but I haven't lost root any of the times. I don't mind losing root if I can grab the OTAs and re-root after.
Yes, if you odin mk2 you will lose root. You would lose for with the nae update also. Not to worry, it is very easy to reroot this phone.

Thanks, cruise350.
I Odin'd the MK2, and it didn't break root, left me with a broken wi fi though! I checked in the settings that I did indeed go to MK2. I Odin'd a file named MK2- ModemOnly.tar.md5.
Perhaps I'm not flashing the correct tar file. My MK2 download was around 1.36G zipped. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks. Until then, I'm back to MJA.
You odined the modem tar not the whole ROM. You can find the proper file that you need in the development section. It's by random45. Download it, and that should bring you to unrooted MK2.

Got it. I had downloaded this file yesterday, but somehow it got corrupted, so downloading once more. Thanks so much for the prompt, excellent help!
If you are still having problems, what version of Odin are you using. While some people report success using the older odins with MK2 I found that using odin 3.09 never fails me with the newer software versions.

cruise350, I was successful! I used 1.85, though I have downloaded 3.07 and 3.09, and tried those along the way (with the wrong files).
Yeah, I tripped Knox but not concerned as I hope to keep this S4 for a long time. I have read about Triangle Away, and did not go there- yet. Should I?
I'll wait for the NAE OTA and seek to root it again after that. Will it still root using CF-Auto Root in Odin?

Raidel00 has a thread opened up for mf3 to mj9. I don't know how successful his thread has been since I used the other method (link) you posted and it worked fine for me. But don't you just have to side load it through adb or through SD card? Since your on mf3 you dont have to download the mf3 partial file that I had to download since I was on mj6 correct?

This is correct. Just download the update file, rename to a zip and side load through adb or use recovery to install.

About to try this with my ATT S4 with MF3 and report.
If you do have troubles still when your phone boots and you are rooted use a file explorer to look at the log files in /cache/recovery to see where it failed.

Choose only one. ... If u use 4 files then u need to place it according to image on post #2...... Each file goes to each Odin slot. ...... but if u choose all in one file then only place it on PDA slot from Odin. The others separate files from post#3 use it only if you soft bricked and want to replace certain file ( recovery, boot or modem). Both 4 files and all in one files would wipe your data and apps..... It would take you straight to stock MK2 firmware.

MK2 being 4.3? it seems to me, the easiest riute is the all in one, although it is huge..i can always delete it after use of course.
from what i understand, even after a wipe, i can reinstall titanium backup and get all my data and apps back or is there a better way? member, dumber here...
and, stock MK2... is there a link to rooting this after i do the upgrade ? i like a rooted phone..i unlocked the bootloader on my atrix , i guess more as an act of defiance than knowing wtf i was doing...
so now with my S4, i hope to resolve the freeze and wi-fi issues...i had no such problems with my S3..and of course i want to attain root.
thanks!

You have to make sure busybox gets uninstalled also. Sometimes it is left there and that trips the custom status.

Hi everyone,
My phone was acing kind of wonky after the 4.4.2 update so I wanted to start fresh from MK2 and OTA to 4.4.2 like I did before. I tried to odin back to MK2 via Odin and the stock MK2 tar but it immediately failed and now it states Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select Recovery Mode in Kies and try again. If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. I'm pretty sure the stock 4.4.2 tar would fix it right up but I dont see it on Samsung Firmware website yet. Thanks.
I don't think you can Odin back to a previous firmware, in this case from 4.4.2 to 4.3. I believe this was the same issue with going from 4.3 to 4.2. You will need the 4.4.2 NAE tar file to recover your phone.

kevin is correct there is no way I think it is due to keys of going back ( not sure if its keys but think it is heh ) anyways what you need to due is install the newest update before kitkat threw odin then you can update to kitkat now that the ota file is available for download.

3.07 works for mk2, he's on nae and screwed up trying to odin backwards. If he uses the newest odin he might have better luck.

That might be true. Was just trying to say you don't always need the latest to get it to work. Ex. I've used MK2 on 3.07 and 1.85 I believe. But yes he might have luck with the newest.

I was in this situation yesterday. Here's how I got out of it:
1) I downloaded the (unofficial) NAE tar from here: https://mega.co.nz/#!55cWBB6a!v1L7J2MfLMe-gjybYpNSbnDapIVaKtbEJngRQmBcsKU
2) I used Odin to flash it. It failed at the end of the system partition, but it appears to have succeeded for all of the other partitions.
3) I then used Heimdall to flash just the system partition again, and it succeeded. I rebooted, and all was well. You may try Odin a couple times to see if it succeeds, but I didn't have the patience.
Hopefully that will get you up and running again.
Hi everyone,
Thank you for all your responses. I was able to recover after finding muniz_ri post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50345826&postcount=224 I used his Tar file and easily recovered from there. It rebooted twice while setting up but everything has been smooth sailing after that. Hopefully others can benefit from this information as it was kind of lost in that thread. Again, thank you to everyone for your help.
i tried the NB1 to MK2 method. the odin failed for no reason, saying that "Completion(write) failed". i tried several times and tried again after rebooting the computer and it worked. but the problem is that my phone wont boot. it's stuck on the samsung screen. how do i fix this? i did everything right! i double checked before initiating the odin. the phone wont even go to the downloadmode. Can JTAG fix this? JTAG worked last time when my MF3 got bricked.
also it wont even get to the stock recovery

If you can't get to download mode or anything, then yes you'll need JTAG.

Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545 and get the NB1 tars and flash in Odin. Then you'll find how to Safestrap and root.

Ijust saw that there isnt a root method yet for NB1. If you haven't upgraded to 4.4 yet then you should try to get flashed back to MK2 and root it until there is a reliable rooting method for 4.4

Did you end up staying on NB1 or doing the downgrade trick to get back to MK2?

i'm now on NB1, and i heard that the root method for NB1 should probably come out before verizon's NB1 release, so i'm just gonna wait until the NB1 root comes out. Because i seriously messed up my phone twice, so i'm not trying to do complicated things now.

You can have a stock, rooted NB1 phone now thanks to muniz_ri. Here is the link.

I bricked my phone by that method. but since there is NB1 full tar, i'm gonna give it another try if the root method doesn't come out. I don't know what the problem was, but anytime i do something, i screw up my phone. I was a dev for Galaxy A in Korea, but now things have changed too much and now i barely install a rom.

Yeah, rooting was so much easier back in the day of unlocked boot loaders. My Galaxy Skyrocket just demands to wear a new rom every chance it gets. The Galaxy S4 on At&t is more difficult & the instructions must be followed exactly when flashing custom roms or it's Odin tar file party time. All in all, it's so worth it. The Kit Kat roms that are out thus far are just amazing. Thanks XDA!
But still i cant install AOSP roms. I like AOSP better
