[Q] Possible hardware fault help please - Galaxy Note II General

Mistakenly used the omega rom for a S2 on my note 2 by not taking much notice when installing, anyway it went on fine (although I know it prob shouldnt have) and phone crashed as to be expected when i realised.
I then installed official samsung 4.3 firmware via odin however the phone is now really laggy and takes several presses of the power/home button for the screen to respond, also the sound dont quite sound right, i have since put the omega rom on for the note 2 however there is no improvement
Is it possible to have damaged the hardware ny doing this???

There isnt any possibility of damaging your hardware.. make a full wipe.. since a rom flashes everything, your partitions might have got corrupted... do a full wipe using recovery and then proceed with flashing a rom. Format each and everything. I would even format the internal sd, and use adb or recovery to transfer files afterwards...

Thanks for the reply
I have done all what you have mentioned and even removed everything through twrp so no operating system was installed and then formatted before reloading oem firmware via odin but the problem is still present

Use it for a day or two... it should get solved... flashing a wrong rom bricks the phone usually. Which bootloader are u using? Use mj5 on 4.3 for optimum performance...

Got the new bootloader on matey, phone is freezing all the time now too so symptoms going downhill

Is there any other way to fully format the phone apart from through recovery as doing it through there hasnt made any difference????

In Odin with pit file and repartition check.

Could you explain more as my knowledge of odin is limited..where would i get a pit file from

Also would i flash a pit file before or after the original software?

Done the pit file and repartition method but no improvement

[Q] Soft-Brick Assistance

Note: I may not use terms correctly, I have spent the past hour reading threads similar to mine in order to (hopefully) use the correct terms to describe my predicament.
I was using TriForce ROM 3.0 and I wanted to mix things up a bit because it was too much like the stock ROM. I found Negalite S4 and tried my hand at that, with devastating consequences. I booted my phone into TWRP did a wipe and then proceeded to install the Negalite S4.zip onto my phone. It got stuck in a boot loop. After a good 30~ minutes of it continuously rebooting I turned it off and booted back into TWRP. However, now that my phone was wiped, it is not a recognized device by my computer any longer. Since I wiped the phone clean the .zip is no longer on my phone either. So, all I have now is a phone that can boot into recovery (TWRP); which is a soft-brick (correct me if I'm wrong).
I have read other threads and the xda community informs the user to use KIES or ODIN (I have used ODIN once before). However, try as hard as I can to understand their directions... I don't know what to do with ODIN.
My computer does not recognize my device at all. It will only boot into recovery otherwise it's stuck in an infinite boot loop. I am really scared that I have ruined such a valuable phone and so I am not thinking clearly - which is only adding to my "noobishness."
Can anyone please help me out in a way that I can understand? All help is much appreciated!

Okay, download and install Samsung drivers from the Internet if your phone isn't installing them on its own. Download MDL stock. Open ODIN. Put your phone in download mode. ODIN should see your phone. Flash stock MDL. Use goo manager to install TWRP again after your booted on stock MDL. Or use ODIN to do it. Redownload the custom ROM you want and then flash in TWRP. Also wiping the phones dalvik, cache system ect shouldn't have erased your SD card in the first place. You mist have accidentally checked the wipe SD card in advanced wipe options. You never need to do that. So next time also have a nandroid backup on your external SD. I keep one on internal as well in case external card goes bad cause sometimes that happens. And never select that wipe SD card option. Unless of course you really do want to wipe your SD card. Don't do that and keep a full backup of your last working ROM and you'll not have this problem again.

Thank-you for the detailed response, I'll get started now! I did wipe the SD card, you're right. I'm so glad that you posted, thanks again.
If I need help I'll edit this post (no bumping within 24 hours). I'm hoping I have enough smarts to knock this out though. Again, thank you so much.
EDIT: Excuse my ignorance. I'm not sure what MDL stock is, I figured it was the default ROM - I have a nandroid of that. However, even after re-installing the samsung drivers, rebooting both my phone and computer - nothing happens. I don't know how to proceed from here. I can imagine I'm becoming a pain and do apologize.

The link above is the tar file for stock MF9. If you just use the link for the from the first post you just need to download the first file (not the kernel). Once downloaded you need to extraxt that zip and you will get a .tar.md5 file from it. Later open odin and make sure only auto reboot is checked. Click on the PDA slot and find the .tar.md5 file you downloaded click on it. Next put your phone into download mode and connect it to your computer. Wait for it to install drivers and you will see a yellow box with "com:[some number]" once you see that click start and from there let it do its thing and whoola you have your phone back to MF9 stock. Good luck!

Well, you did it! That post is solid, I understood every-bit! My phone (most likely) is downloading the firmware now. I don't know how long it will take to get off the "Downloading... Do not turn off target !!" screen, but I'll edit this post after letting it sit over night! Thank you both so much.

You were right, it was quite snappy. I cannot believe I was so panicked over this! My babies safe ... for now.
So how did Twrp wipe nor SD card? When by boot into recovery and immediately click on Wipe, it'll wipe everything Necessary except the internal and external memory. Did you click the option to choose what you want to wipe? Happens more than ya may think, cause I've done it myself lol. Good to hear it's back up, I still get freaked out by those occurrences

It wasn't human error through TWRP, it was an error while flashing Negalite. It asks if you want to wipe everything, data, or nothing at all. Silly me thought let's wipe EVERYTHING! Heheh

[Q] STRANGEST ROM Flashing Symptoms and Issues. CALLING Flash, Recovery, EXPERTS!!!

Dear Friends,
I just bought a Sprint S4, and despite my half a decade experience of flashing custom ROMs and such, I seem to run into a whole lot of issues with this phone that I cannot solve or get past.
So some background first, on what's happened and been done to the phone:
1. Bought the phone (don't recall the original firmware), but Rooted it via the QBKing method.
2. Flashed TWRP 6.1 something from the GooManager
3. Have a Class 10 SD 64Gig SD Card that I formatted via S4, so I assume it's in the ExFat format?
4. Downloaded Sacs, put the ZIP on the SD
5. Booted into TWRP, Wiped, Data, Dalvik, Cache, and System
6. Tried Flashing Sacs ZIP from SD, Errored out: Something like: Flash failed, unable to read the Zip file. And some verbiage for Partition
7. I can't Mount my SD or INTERNAL via Recovery. Can read them from the Recovery file Manager, but nothing shows up on the computer, unrecognized drivers (worked fine for the same phone, later, when it was on, so I know it was the drivers that was the issue)
8. Ran straight for Odin after that, but after trying SEVERAL TARs and etc, the phone would NOT begin flashing with Odin even :'(! (Could still enter Download Mode)
9. After HOURS of trying VARIOUS Odin versions and TARs, I found a One-Click EXE with Odin Packaged with the MDC Rooted firmware this FINALLY brought the phone back to life!!
Now the issues remaining that I need your expert help and advice on:
1. Since the phone coming back to life, I went STRAIGHT for Sacs ROM again! MD5 checked it, everything looked good. Put it both on SD and Internal.
2. Made Backups of the MDC ROM
3. Tried Flashing and ran into the similar error that you saw in Step 6 from the Backgroun
4. Downloaded Stock, DeOdexed MF9 ZIP, downgraded TWRP to a stable version, and tried Flashing again and Step 6 repeated. Tried VARIOUS ROMs this way, same issue. Error flashing, something about Partition, and Couldn't read Zip. All these Zips were MD5 Sum CHECKED!
5. The lack of mounting issue as USB drives from Recovery continues
6. Then a FREAK discovery was, when the ZIP failure occurred, I opted for Flash Dalvik and Cache and tried Installing right after that, and BOOM! Sacs starts Flashing !!!
7. I broke Sacs quick, restoring things from Titanium Backup, and when I tried restoring my latest MDC Backup, it recovered with a black screen and bootloops, and NO recovery entry AGAIN :'(!! (I think I may have backed up Recovery with that Nandroid and restored)
8. So I repeated the One-Click again, the phone restored again... this time in FACTORY MODE :-/?? I ignored, and restored to an older MDC backup, which worked!
9. I downloaded TriForce MF9, this time, tried flashing and failure again with Failed Flashing, error reading Zip. And on and on it goes :'(! I can't run Odins with MF9, I can't flash ROMs, I can't mount my INTERNAL AND SD in Recovery and am just straight bummed :'(!!
I have a few hunches:
- Format SD Card as Fat32, using this one app. But I think you lose 32 gig space from your card, right? Also, why doesn't Internal storage mount from Recovery :-/?
- Maybe a I just have bad or corrupted sectors in my Internal AND External storage devices?
In either case, please treat me as a NOOB, and chime in with your thoughts and experience on what you think could be happening? I appreciate ALL your help in advance, thanks for your time !
I would try a new recovery, I have always had problems with the newer TWRPs, I recommend 2.5.0.2 or CWM
^ that, and do you have to update to mf9 before flashing an mf9 rom? That might be helpful. Are you just dirty flashing rom over rom in your attempts, that could be an issue. Wiping and factory resetting before flashing the Rom may help.
Just tossing out random ideas.
Edit: just realized I missed #5 in the first half. Sorry, and missed the stock deodexed part lol.

Also a yes, Sir. MF9 kept failing, that is, it wouldn't be read by Recovery. Odin would fire the Tar either . No dirty flashing... almost EVER !

I just ran into a bunch of problems. Man.. You need to be careful what you flash. Not everything is on the up and up. Steer clear of this website and their firmware. ------> http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/ Unless you are intrigued by complex remote spyware. You'll be amazed with the phoney updates that inject things like a note 3 keyboard, Android device manager, and a bogus samsung hub. All of which will show AT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP of your google play "all" list as installed apps.... but not in your installed apps list. They show as installed, but incompatible with your device. Go figure. Somebody had complete control of my device. It took me a minute to figure it out. Then finding a legit source of firmware here. ----->http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SPH-L720 I was able to get legit again. But not after encountering the problems you are having. I had to go in and manually delete a few partitions that did not belong and stayed after flashing anything. Once I did that... I flashed the MF9 firmware from samsung.updates.com (the second site I just listed above) and everything is legit now. No phoney updates. No bogus apps. Everything is perfect just like it came when I took it out of the box. Beware.... MANY of these ROM's have b.s. injected into them, and so do some of the firmwares. Take caution bro. I'd be happy to answer any questions if there are any.

Remapping yhe partitions with PIT files which are also flashed with odin. I wanted to be sure, so I manually deleted partitions, then flashed the good firmware I mentioned above.

Process System crashs and bootloop

Hi,
I've a big problem with my note 3 (SM-9005).
Root and under Foxhound Diamonds ROM 1.2
All worked perfectly during one month and I don't do any modifcation last month.
Just i flashed Faux's recovery 2 days ago.
After that, Note3 works perfectly. But I had needed to do a reboot. But after reboot I had many problems. PIN code was not query after reboot, I have no signal and after several seconds it's show me "system process doesn't respond" wait or close?. Then the phone reboot and reboot until I removed the battery.
I tried to reflash the rom but I had still the same problem. I also tried to reflash a Samsung firmware with ODIN. Flash was OK, but problem is still there. No signal, and reboot after system process crash...
Any idea? My Knox counter is at 0x1...
Sorry for my poor English.

Because you corrupted your EFS partition flashing either a kernel that didn't like the phone or a ROM that had issues, (Samsung Note 3 is prone to EFS issues currently). And it needed rebuilt. Re-Flashing stock in most cases won't rebuild it but sometimes it does, then you have you use this to fix. No need to go back to stock or wipe or anything, just flash it and voila! fixed

Ok, I've not my note 3 with me. I tried to return it to after-sales services. But Samsung said that I had flashed the device and that warranty is broken...
I'm waiting the estimate but I think it will be too expensive. I want try to repair it by myself but they have not brought back the phone yet.
But the last solution :

needs to have a custom recovery. But it seems to me that after i had flashed the stock firmware, I didn't have the custom recovery but only the stock... How I can flash the file? Is it possible with the stock recovery?
Grab TWRP or CWM recoveries and ODIN, boot the phone into download mode - when it is off. Load up one of your custom recoveries in to PDA - hit start and let it install. Once it's done your phone will still bootloop, so take the battery out. Put back in - hold volume up, power button and home button - it'll boot into recovery, then just flash your efs fix zip via the install button

I'm still waiting for the after-service.
Samsung refuse my device. Warranty is broken because I flashed it. They saw Knox's counter of course...
They asked 250€ ~ 340$ to repair it. I refused I prefer to try your solution and i'm waiting. The phone will be back in average the 15th january.

No need to go back to stock or wipe or anything, just flash it and voila! fixed

Some news!
I just recover my phone!
I have immediately flashed the recovery, and flash the file you got me. And.... it's running!!!!:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I'm so happy!!! What a shame for Samsung! They said in the estimate 340$ to repair it with a change of motherboard while just a little flash was enough.
If you have a paypal adress, radicalisto, I buy you a beer!
Glad you got sorted - I cannot take credit for that script I'm afraid.. If you head over to the thread it was posted in you can thank the guy who made it

[Q] Odin Troubles... >_<

So here we go again...
I tried using Odin to get back to stock but, Odin just kept crashing
every time I tried loading the 'MD5' file. I tried multiple versions as well..
Then I realized even though the computer would say Odin was
'Not Responding' I continued to wait, and finally it loaded the MD5!
So I went ahead and tried going back to stock, but when I did
every stock MD5 file causes my device to close
Google Play, Google Location, and SystemUI rapidly...
I was able to get my original Recovery in there and restore a backup,
but I'd really like to try and go back to stock for a bit and start fresh.
What the heck in the world is going on with my phone?!
I thought Odin was my safety net, here to help me, but
instead I'm getting more and more hassle trying to get it workin'...
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!!
Just tried flashing MK6 using Odin
(MK6 came on my phone originally)
and I get the same issue..
Everything I try ends up failing..
Egads!

What firmware are you on? What version of Odin are you using? Perhaps try using a different version. Also use original usb cable not universal one. Seems to make a difference.

So the flash was successful but when booting up u get FC's correct? If that is the case then I would guess it's because u didn't wipe data/factory reset preflash. Doing this from recovery should solve ur problem if I understood u right

So Odin doesn't wipe / factory reset
on its own?
The first time I forgot to wipe but
every other time Im sure I wiped in
recovery before hitting up download
mode.
I did make a ROM using NC1
firmware and added KT kernel to
it. The ROM was a dud and that's
why I wanted a fresh start.

The way I understand it there are 2 types of Odin flashable fws: full wipe and no full wipe. Full wipe fws are the ones that come in separate parts, i.e. BL, AP, CP etc. and no full wipe fws are the complete tar.md5 files. I recently went back to stock to get a fresh start as well and had the same issue with FC's on boot up. Factory reset fixed it

So I was using an .md5 file, therefore Odin
wasn't able to fully wipe my S4?
I could have sworn I tried wiping..
Will give it another go though! :highfive:

They're all .md5's. One comes in 4 parts and the other all bundled in one. The latter, as has been my experience, does not wipe data

Well it sure didn't work last time I tried..
I can get the phone to boot but Wifi remains
locked in the off position and my baseband
remains at MK6 when I was trying to flash
the 4.4.2 NC1 build..
Could this be due to the KT kernel I
flashed before trying to restore?
I flashed the Kernel before all this
happened, then realized the kernel
dropped my wifi, so that's why I tried
restoring to stock, but the wifi still
drops on me after odin'ing back to
stock…

Ya that's what I used too. I just formatted all the individual partitions first using philz to be sure I got a clean start. Also, if u wanna try it, the leaked NC1 firmware that dropped right before the official OTA's came out, I think that was a 'full restore' fw as it came in 4 sections.

There is a boot.img inside the stock fw if I'm not mistaken, and that should overwrite anything you've done to /boot (where the kernel lives).
So if I understand this correctly I have a couple of options one of them being I do the full firmware update using the 4 files provided from the leak. Or somehow install the boot.img and that should fix the wifi drop issues?

Reset S4 with broken LCD

Hi guys, i've broken my Galaxy s4 lcd some day ago, and yesterday i've decided to sell it on ebay.
But now i have to wipe it. The problem is that i am running a custom Touchwiz rom and Philz touch recovery. So i don't think i can use Kies to make a factory reset.
I can use Odin to flash a stock image etc... But i don't know how to solve completely my problems.
Can someone help me? Thx

Thank you for the replay.
However, the Galaxy S4 doesn't have fastboot mode, but only download mode and recovery mode, so I don't know how to use the commands...

Odin will fix it.
Flash the stock ronin Odin. All your user data will be (sort of) removed.
A skilled user could still recover your user data' but most people won't even know its there.
You will not need the phone's screen to work at any point in the Odin process.

I've just finished to flash the stock rom, I hope evrything worked fine. I'll try to install Kies3 to see if I can maybe do another wipe or something else to delete definately all my data inside (including photos etc...). Any suggestions?

Odin will wipe the data as well as Kies will.
But neither really removes the data. Both just remove the directory structure which makes it easy to sort the data.
To really remove the data you need to overwrite it with new data. That is much more difficult to do without access to the screen on the phone.
You could do it in recovery with the device mounted via usb to a computer. But you generally need to select that in recovery using the touch screen.
You can also push data to the device to overwrite using adb, but its more difficult.
All in all though...unless you have evidence of your participation in a crime on the phone, don't be so worried about it. It will be okay.

Since Google implemented Trim in Android 4.3, it's impossible (as of yet) to recover deleted data. I tried several guides here on XDA on data recovery and none of them work anymore.
See for example this article.
http://forensic.belkasoft.com/en/why-ssd-destroy-court-evidence
So basically if you delete a file or format your system, the data is really gone.

From my experience, flashing stock firmware with Kies DOES NOT wipe the user data/files from phones SD card. I have to always do factory reset from stock recovery to wipe it.

It wont ever wipe the external sd card
The internal sd card should depend on the tar file and if it formats that partition or not.
I never really paid attention to it myself because I have never had to flash a full stock restore on my S4 so I have no idea what the standard for S4 firmwares is.
The internal data partition though should be wiped with a full stock firmware in odin every single time.

Well, it's not. Believe me. I used to flash stock rom on S4 number of times and I can confirm that flashing stock rom with Odin DOES NOT WIPE any user data. Your photos and other files stays intact as well as the apss ( you may loose some apps internal data ) until factory reset is performed either from stock recovery or from rom itself.

if your S4 opens, just connect it to the PC and then the internal memory will appear
delete whatever you wants
