I've already apologized for coming off an iphone, but these little things are mounting and I feel the need to share. The input of this cable is a constant struggle. I find myself trying 3 and 4 times to actually get it in the bottom of the phone, and then.....nothing happens. At least the iphone jack had a press in on the side to get it in and out. So no charge, or it shows it charging and 5 mins. later nothing again. So that's coming from the outlet, but if I plug it in my pc it goes crazy with the sounds and asks what i want to do. So, you think ok some loose pins on either end? NO! I've checked and both ends look secure and neither simulate the problem when shaken or tugged or moved around. I have read all about soldering, but I am not able to do that yet, and with no ability to buy new wires in the US I am living on a dying charge. Are these wires so tempermental for everyone?
Ive had no issues charging but I know how you feel about getting the charger in in the first place, takes a couple of goes thats for sure!

Yes it could be a bit easier to get it home but no problems once it is connected
getting it in can be fiddly. hold it steady, line it up then shove it in!

Put some hair around it!!
It's official!!!
After the whole day of wiggling and changing connection from usb to wall and even car usb the phone said battery error. Either your charger of battery is malfunctioning. Please check immediately. So the battery registered full, but then said 89% and then only 81%. I'm hoping to get a new charger and battery when the dell USA comes online.
I have 2 cables. 1 works correctly but the other charges when it feels like it. I have a support request in with Dell have yet to hear anything. The sooner cheaper 3rd party cables become available the better as I would keep more spares then.
that sucks. I've been considering the streak, well really wanted it and now that they've finally announced it, not sure i want it anymore cuz of its proprietary port. Why couldn't they have just used micro or mini USB like everybody else?
Everyone's house i go to has a micro/mini usb cable laying around so i never have to take a charger with me anywhere. And since my past 3 phones all used micro or mini usb, i have a bunch of those cables and chargers all over my house. Now with this crap i'm gonna have to buy several cables, 1 for the office, living room, car, etc. that is if i do get the device.
I've had my vibrant since August and lately I've noticed the charger is extremely loose. It wiggles left and right a lot and falls off very easily, has anyone else noticed this or is it just me??
I also have it with the charger that comes with the phone, good thing is i have another OEM charger.
I had this happen to my motorola cliq. hopefully its the charger cord and not the charge port on your phone...that would suck. Try a diff cord to see if that helps you out. Not to be a downer, but it was the port on my cliq...
A very small port (like our microUSB port) with a not so small cable lends itself to experiencing excess strain if you're not careful. This is the nature of small ports and the laws of physics.
I bought my Vibrant on craigslist so I can't vouch for the OEM cable, only have blackberry branded micro USB cables, and they work fine, very snug. So try a different cable, if its still just as bad it may be your port.
I just had to buy a new charger cause I had the same issue
I had this issue after about a month I went to a local discount electronic store and got a micro usb cord for 5 bucks works great
Op, exact same thing as of 3 days ago.
It's the cable. My nexus one charger fits the Vibrant perfect, no wiggle.

To be honest, tonight I woke up, my phone was lighting up telling me less than 15% left and I noticed the charger tilted downwards and didn't charge... Hmmmmm
You could go on amazon and find an external oem charger,it comes with an extra oem battery and i think it was like 30 bucks.
I never charge by phone anymore
$3 if you have the wall plug:

I have an old nokia micro usb charger that my brother jacked to use in his car hopefully it's not loose otherwise I'm gonna get a warranty replacement =/
wiggles left and right? Yes falls off very easily? NO
Ebay after market charger they work fine for me and very cheap
i really thought it was me i . i also notice that its not charging my phone as fast as it used to im talking about 30 min and only brings it up to 20%. and its charging while off!!
i find myself taking my moms charger a lot now a days lol
I too have had this issue. At first it was just the cable, as other MicroUSB cables had a more solid connection, but now it doesn't matter which cable I use, indicating the port in in the phone is at fault. I'm going to be asking T-Mo for a RMA because of it.
Hi,
can my acer iconia be charged via the usb?
No it cannot be charged via USB.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Most of the tablets can't be charged over USB - the A/C charger for the Acer is a 12v and I think (don't have mine with me at the moment) over 1 amp; even USB 3.0 only puts out 5v and maxes at 1a.
Having said that, it'd be nice if they could take a trickle charge over the USB input to reduce the battery drain, even if it can't fully charge the battery.
If anyone here also owns a Nook Color you may have noticed that it won't charge over USB either, and in fact even requires a custom "USB" cable attached to their power adapter for charging. Their cable looks like a regular USB cable but it is not.
The screens and batteries are just too big to support the tiny amount of power USB is designed to provide.
Nope, no charging over USB. It has to do with the amount of charge needed to charge the device and USB is unable go generate the needed power.

The Nook Color does in fact charge over USB. I do it all the time. The only time it needs the AC power adapter is if it next to dead, and you get the "Battery too low to power on". Also, the AC adapter, even though it outputs via MicroUSB, will NOT charge other devices as it doesn't fit exactly for some reason.

My (retired) 1st gen Sony eReader was like that also, USB charge didn't work once the batt level got too low
NO
Like stated before almost no tablet charges over usb. and like one poster pointed out not even the nook color charges over usb I have one as well.
One poster says the nook does charge but you have to define chargeing. on wall power it charges full in like less then an hour. plugged into usb and only if its off or in sleep with no wifi running it will chrge but it will take all night. so for all purposes it dosent usb charge.
I dont know about other tablets but the iconia has TWO internal batteries(read your box see the little x2 next to the batteries) and most likely why it wont charge over usb.
To tell the truth I have not really understood the hang up on the usb charging or the short cord for the iconia. usually I charge mine when im done with it or not using it so cord length means nothing. and as far as usb charging, usb charging on anything is harder on the battieres. and most likely why alot of companies dont do it.
The whole idea is to be prtable who wants to be teathered to the wall with a charger 4 foot or 6 foot really whats the difference?
side note: the person who said the nook color cord was special? its just a standard mini usb just like on portable hard drives nothing special about it. i lost mine and just used the one from my hard drive worked just fine.

I think the point with USB charging is it one less adapter you have to carry... if everyting supported the same port type it would make life much easier the the micro USB has been a nice solution for phones

That would be great. Maybe someday they will design a transport port and technology allowing a single port to both be intelligent enough to transport files to/from a computer as well as charge these devices.
For now, as others have said - the batteries in the A500 take too much juice to be charged through the USB port. Imagine having to charge your tablet for 48 hrs? Or worse, while it's charging you pick it up to check a website and even while charging it just starts draining because the batteries are juicing out faster than they can be charged?
It just wouldn't work.

I'm traveling to Germany in a few weeks. I have an adapter for my Dell Laptop to deal with the Power over there. The ability to charge my tablet, phone, and any other devices from my laptop would be awesome. If I wish to take my tablet, I'll need to buy another adapter / power converter that I'll hardly ever use. I often travel within the US for business, and carrying one less power adapter would be nice.
Sometimes My kids steal my tablet and use up all the battery, or I simply forget to plug it in... then I go to use it, and it's near dead. With the ridiculously short cord I cant use it while it charges unless I want to sit on the floor next to an electrical outlet or use an extension cord. And of course of the 50 or so power bricks I have.. none match..
While these things are slightly inconvenient.. It's not a show stopper. I love my Iconia.
I think people are used to their android phones, where (for me at least), my habit is to sit down and plug in the usb. It's just easy to keep it charged that way.
I found this neat device though, I think someone called it an extension cord or something? It really solved my problems of the short cord. I bet the guy who invented that is a millionaire.
(Seriously, they could have made the cord longer, just so you could sit the tab on a table and not be stretching, but $2 at Home Depot fixed the issue real quick).

Extending the cable isn't really all that difficult, just cut the cable in two, rip the insulating layer from both ends, add some extra cable in-between and voila! You've got yourself a longer charging cable

Yep, that would definitely do the job but what about electrical resistance or conductance may be depending on the material, diameter of the wire, legth, temperature ... sorry, I'm not an electrician or an engineer but I think one shouldn't do such "grafting" with such sensitive electronic equipment...
Solution
What you ought to make is a 5V to 12V little box that you plug into TWO (or more) USB ports and draw power off both. It would be pretty small, you could probably put it inline. I have a hard drive case that draws power from two USB ports. One is power only, other is power and data. It Y's into a mini USB from two full size USB.
THAT'S what tablet makers ought to use. 1A at 5V is 5 watts, which is about 420mA @ 12 Volts which would probably let you charge when off at least on a tablet. Assuming no loss of course, but I bet you could still get 400mA effective.

i dont know if you've already made your trip to Germany or not, but as far as your Acer is concerned, all you need is a $0.30 US to German plug adapter. the brick from the iconia can already handle 110-240v. actually, most laptops and such's (even desktops) power supplies handle up to 240v due to people traveling with them. you dont need to worry about getting a special converter. this is coming from someone who's lived in Germany for 2 years, Bosnia for 7 months, and Iraq for 12 months. just look at the power supply and find the voltage on there and if it says 110-240v you're good. if its like 110-120v then you will need the power converter. lost a PlayStation 1 back in 1999 that way because I didnt check.

I like your thinking! (As oppose to all the nay-sayers who accepts defeat so readily...)
Another thing we should consider: many USB ports (even USB 2.0) will provide more power than the specification calls for - my motherboard puts out 1,500mAh on multiple ports, and my laptop has a dedicated "phone charging port" that puts out 1,000 mAh. Some travel adapter also has a USB charging port that puts out more than 500mAh. I know this is not the norm but is becoming a trend. So, for the lucky few who has a high-power USB port, charging the tablet via USB is entirely feasible. In fact, even with standard USB port, it can be done, just not "well".
If you don't believe me, do the math yourself - the Iconia has 2x 3.26Ah battery. At 3.7v, that is about 24 watt. For 2x USB at 500mAh, you get about 5 W/hr of juice. At no-loss, the tablet would be charged in less than 5 hours. Even if we assume 30% loss (typical), it will still be less than 7 hour to fully charge the tablet - aka one night of sleep. And it only gets better if your laptop puts out more power on the USB ports.
I would much rather have 1 power adapter for my laptop, and then plug all my phone/tablet/wifi-hotspot into the laptop... as oppose to lugging around 4 different power bricks. Plus, for those of you who travel a lot, you will know this... hotels never have enough power outlets! I have to start bringing my own powerstrip these days because if there are two of us sharing a room, we'd frequently have to pull out the TV cabinet and unplug the TV, or charge the phones in the bathroom...
So, any chance we can put this in action? And instead of waiting for tablet manufacturers to get their acts together, how many of you would actually pay for a "2x-USB-to-12v" adapter cable that is smaller/lighter than the Iconia wall brick but can charge your tablet overnight via laptop? If there is enough interest, I wonder if we could get a Kickstarter project going for this...
W.
Jumping in here a little late, but it's not true that no tablets can be charged via USB. My Samsung Galaxy Tab can be charged over USB. Mine is the 7" model, no idea about its 10" big brother.
HP TouchPad 16GB also takes charge from USB slow but still charges.
on the other hand my Acer A500 does not!
Just comparing my S3 with my sisters S3, i realised that the bundled usb cable is actually thicker on more recently sold phones.
I noticed this after trying different chargers to try getting her phone charging properly again, and found that her thinner cable was providing less power then say a completely hard wired travel mate charger, In result, her usb cable was providing enough juice to maintain a level of charge but not providing the power necessary to charge it.
I'm used to LION battery circuits being on a switch setup, so that the device is powered completely from the external source during the charge, however the charging on these phones (and possibly other samsung phones) passes through the battery itself, so it does seem that inferior cables can and do affect charging times, atleast while the device is operating.
So to those complaining about slow/no charge, check the quality of your bundled cable, the thicker cables are certainly harder to bend and feel more durable than those sold with the phones earlier in the year.
I found that a good way to check this is when the battery is at 80%, a good quality cable or travelmate charger will increase the current voltage value in battery stats (*#0228#) from 4000xish to 4250+ upon plugin. The inferior cable (or maybe it was damaged even?) may increase it to 41xxish and the battery will appear to take forever to charge, or not at all.

The 4th (or second, depending on which way you're looking at it) pin does not exist on any USB to micro or micro USB adapter cables.
see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174919
standard usb plugs only have 4 pins, 2 for data data, 1 for ground and the last voltage, so this extra pin is never available on any adapter cables, including phone charge cables - its not even present in my travel mate charger, so that pin missing has nothing to do with the slow charge.
I am very sure that my wife charger have 5 pin and working fine, and mine lost 1 pin very slow in charging. We both using the same phone. Btw, I am referring to the pin that's connected to the phone. Not the one to the plug.

Has any one any experience with wireless charging on the Yotaphone 2? It supports the Qi standard but I've not ever had any device that can be charged wireless so I don't know what to expect.
There are some cheap chargers on ebay so I may get one to experiment with but wonder what others are using, how long a charge takes? is there a tiny sweet spot to get it to work? does it get hot? Any compatability issues?
Thanks

Hi there,
Yeah actually I got one for my YotaPhone 2, it's ADATA Elite CE700.
First I have to say I was very disappointed because apparently you can only wireless charging the YotaPhone2 with the main screen facing up! Also you should know that the spot where Qi located is a bit small (3cm in height in the middle of the EPD Screen), but that also depends on the type of wireless charger you would use. Something like Tylt Vu would Support more area thus its more hassle free.
It's also good to know that with wireless charging you won't get Quick Charging anymore. Because In order to do that you must use the MicroUSB port. But again how long a single charge takes depends the type of the Wireless Charger and the amount of output current it has which most of them are 1~1.5A.
For your last concern, any Qi Wireless Charger will do but try to get one of the Tylt Vu. It has the best reviews. And the phone won't get hot during wireless charging if you must know.
And something which I'm not sure whether its my wireless charger or it's general, is when the battery is 100% the charging won't stop, unlike the normal charging with dedicated adapter which cut the current when the charging is complete.

Hi, thanks for your detailed reply, I've now ordered two different generic chargers off amazon to experiment with, they are coming from China I think but were less than a tenner, I'll report back on these after ive used them for a bit.
It seems less than ideal for me to have to charge with the EPD facing down but I guess this is an engineering limitation. I'm sure there would be advantages and disadvantages of each side facing up during wireless charging.
I recently bought the Nokia DT903 wireless charging plate.
It works effortlessly with the Nexus 5. I can pick it up and place it back for charging with no connection worries.
With the Yotaphone 2 it does work, but it has to be in EXACTLY the right spot.... I'm talking millimetre precision here.... it becomes really frustrating to use and spoils one of the key benefits of wireless charging.
That's what is worrying me about Qi charging, I like the idea of wireless charging for the convenience, I work shifts and fiddling with the usb cable when I get in can disturb my partner, just being able to lay it on my night stand would be great, but sometimes I check the time on my phone in the middle of the night, or get up for the loo and nudge the charging cable and move the phone and if its really fussy about how it sits on the charger then I could end up with the phone not being charged overnight.
The ADATA Elite CE700 mentioned by Parisabs4 above looks like a good solution as it is adjustable and with the phone sitting on the cradle it is hopefully easier to hit the sweet spot.
QI charging experience
Okay so I've now tried 3 different Qi wireless charging plates and I have found that all of them exhibit the same problems whilst attempting to charge my Yotaphone 2
In the picture there are 2 single coil chargers and one triple coil charger (the one that is not flat) they are budget models, costing between £4 and £7 on Amazon.
I can get the Yotaphone to begin charging correctly on all three chargers, the phone says it is charging and the qi devices LED blinks to confirm charging. After 10 - 15 seconds the Yotaphone & chargers will stop charging, the indicators on the phone and charges indicate that charging has stopped. After a couple of seconds charging will recommence for about 15 seconds and the stop again, this cycle repeats for a few times then charging stops all together. Lifting the Yotaphone off and then returning to the charger will recommence charging.
My conclusions are that
My device has a faulty wireless charging receiver. (This is unlikely as im on my second device with the same symptoms after an RMA for a previous fault)
The charging software in the Yotaphone is buggy.
The Yotaphone is not fully compatible with the QI standard.
The Qi chargers I am using are not powerful enough for the Yotaphone. (Unlikely as I've now tried 3 different chargers but they were cheap!)
Has anyone else experienced this problem or is using a charger that is proving reliable?
I'm tempted to try the official wireless charging block as it ought to be compatible with the Yotaphone but its £40 wasted if not (although it can charge via a usb port too)
WHY IS NOTHONG EVER EASY IN THE TECH WORLD!!!!

I bought a cheap nameless one, have yet to receive it, I hope it will work in combination with a powerful adapter. Anyone got these cheap (5 USD) chargers working with their phone?
Another good QI charger for YP2 is/are the ones that IKEA sells. They have several models, but all seem based on the same platform powered by a 19V DC adapter.
I couldn't get any cheap QI chargers to work reliably with my YP2, but the IKEA chargers work great. They have some margin in positioning the phone on it, and prices start at around $30/EUR 25, so not to bad. I cannibalized the electronics from a JYSSEN to transplant them into a custom 3D printed charger case.
Does anyone have any experience using this Samsung 2A charger with the Yotaphone 2?

UPDATE: Never mind, I ended up buying the Nokia DT-900 since it's on the official list of supported chargers.
I bought my first wireless charger , a cheapo one from China just to see how they are. Cheap as in 4 USD. It does work but exhibits behaviour like described above. All night only charges it a little and the on light is not on much. I thought it was a problem with a cheap charger, but maybe not, it sounds like Yotaphone firmware. I don't have any problem finding the sweet spot.
I was reading about new LG fast charger that is coming out soon, first ever fast 15w wireless charger. But of course it will be expensive .

I bought an 3-coil-qi-charger-stand from China (eBay article 381639407985) about 10€. It works perfekt.
Cheap Single coil charger work also, but only if you place the Yotaphone at the exactly right position ( only 2mm tolerance). As the coil inside the 2,80€ single-chip-computers charger from China is often not places correctly inside the housing, you first have to correct that.
So tripple-coil is to be prefered.
One nice thing: Charging via QI and USB-OTG works fine at the same time on Yotaphone. You can put the Yotaphone 90 degree rotated on the 3-coil-charger-stand and watching Videos from a USB-Stick.
I even think about building an own small OTG-Adapter, using a extreme small micro-usb-connector (like used in universal QI reciver-plates), a very small USB-Micro-SD-Reader, some wire and epoxy. The SD-Reader will be placed on the lower frame of the ePaper. I use a bumper and would cut the neccassary space out of it. So I could build an nearly invissible (with bumper) SD-Card-slot. 64GB extra space is nice...
I'm using a Nokia DT-910 that I originally bought for my Nexus 5 a few years back.. works just fine with the YotaPhone 2..
No need to be careful with positioning or anything like that.. just put the phone on it and that's it.
The benefit of a charger like this is that you can actually see the screen while charging instead of it being flat on the table like some other models.

Never thought about it but they do seem quite common https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=qi+wireless+powerbank
Or you can easily make one yourself by taping a wireless charger to a powerbank
In that case there is a wire, between PB and Wireless charger. so NOT wireLESS, lol
Can I use a QI Wireless power bank to charge the Yotaphone in my pocket?
Sometimes my phone runs out of juice. Is it possible to buy a power bank with wireless charging capabilities and use it to tirelessly charge my phone, by placing the power bank in my pocket next to my phone?
